Andhra Man Drags Mother By Hair, Slaps Father Over Land Given To Brother

A man was seen mercilessly beating up his parents over a property dispute in disturbing footage from Andhra Pradesh. He drags his mother by her hair, repeatedly slaps her as she cries and pleads with him to stop. In one frame, the son can be seen kicking her so hard that she falls to the ground, yet he continues his assault.

As his mother lay on the ground wailing, he turns to his father and slaps him. A little girl was seen standing next to the man, witnessing the scene.

Some bystanders were also seen in the video, none of whom came forward to help the couple.

A case has been registered, and the man - identified as Srinivasulu Reddy - has been detained over the incident that occurred in the Annamayya district on Saturday.

Srinivasulu was reportedly dissatisfied about a three-acre land given to his elder brother, Manohar Reddy, and wanted his parents - Lakshmamma and Venkatramana - to change that. The couple told police even after they agreed to sign wherever he asked, he continued to assault them.

Local police inspector Yuvaraju said, "Anyone ill-treating their parents is liable for punishment. Parents and elders must report any such incident."

Rajasthan Man Gets Life Term For Raping Live-In Partner's Minor Daughter

A court here on Saturday sentenced a 33-year-old man to life imprisonment for repeatedly raping the 13-year-old daughter of his live-in partner here, a government counsel said.

The accused committed the crime after the girl's mother allegedly killed herself and the minor was staying alone with him, he added.

A POCSO court in Jhalawar convicted Pratap Singh Sondhya in the case, awarded him life term and imposing a fine of Rs 3 lakh, said Public Prosecutor Ramhetar Gurjar.

The matter pertains to a complaint lodged at Dug police station in Jhalawar on December 12, 2022, Gurjar said.

The survivor was 5-year-old when her mother moved in with the accused. She was living alone with the man after her mother died by suicide five years later, he said.

In her complaint, the minor alleged that the accused repeatedly raped her for around 3-4 months before she fled the house and went to her maternal grandmother's home who later took her to the police, the public prosecutor said.

Based on the complaint, the police lodged a case of rape against Sondhya under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, and SC/ST Act and arrested him within a day, he said.

The man was lodged in jail under judicial custody since December 13, 2022, he added.

The POCSO court on Saturday held Sondhya guilty of repeated rape and sexual exploitation of the 13-year-old girl based on the statements of 15 witnesses and relevant documents, the prosecutor said.

Navy To Commission INS Jatayu At Lakshadweep's Minicoy Island To Enhance Ops

The Indian Navy will commission Naval Detachment Minicoy as INS Jatayu on March 6, a move that seeks to "incrementally augment" security infrastructure at the strategically important Lakshadweep Islands, according to officials.

The commissioning will take place in the presence of Navy Chief Adm R Hari Kumar, they said on Saturday.

"The event marks an important milestone in the Navy's resolve to incrementally augment security infrastructure at the strategically important Lakshadweep Islands," a senior official said.

Naval Detachment Minicoy was set up in the early 1980s under the operational command of the Naval Officer-in-Charge (Lakshadweep).

Minicoy is the southernmost island of Lakshadweep which straddles the vital Sea Lines of Communications (SLOCs). Basing of an independent naval unit with requisite infrastructure and resources will enhance the overall operational capability of the Indian Navy in the islands, the official said.

The base will enhance operational reach and facilitate the Navy's operational efforts towards anti-piracy and anti-narcotics operations in the Western Arabian Sea, the officials said.

"It will also augment the Indian Navy's capability as the first responder in the region and augment connectivity with the mainland. The establishment of a naval base is in line with the Government of India's focus towards comprehensive development of islands," the official added.

INS Jatayu is the second naval base in Lakshadweep after INS Dweeprakshak in Kavaratti.

"With the commissioning of INS Jatayu, the Indian Navy will strengthen its foothold in the Lakshadweep islands and along with extending operational surveillance, reach and sustenance, it will usher a in new era of capacity building and comprehensive development of the island territories," the official said.

Haryana Man Strangles Niece, 8, To Death, Buries Body 3 Km Away From Home

Nuh Police on Friday arrested a 27-year-old man for allegedly strangling his eight-year-old niece to death and burying her body in a field 3 km away from his village, said police. The police recovered the body Friday evening and placed it in the mortuary, they said.

The girl had gone missing under suspicious circumstances on Wednesday.

Her father approached police and said his daughter was playing with other children at home and went missing around 12 pm when he and his wife were away in the fields.

He filed a complaint, on the basis of which an FIR of missing person was registered at Ferozepur Jhirka Police Station on Thursday, said police.

The investigation led police to truck driver Abbas, who was arrested. During questioning, Abbas confessed to killing the girl and burying her body in Doha village. He is yet to reveal the motive behind the killing, police said.

At his instance, the girl's body was exhumed and sent to Mandikheda district hospital for post mortem, said police.

"The accused used to work as a truck driver. We are questioning him and a post mortem will be conducted tomorrow by the board of doctors," said Inspector Aman Kumar, SHO of Ferozepur Jhirka Police Station.

Badals Got Rs 108 Crore Waived In Taxes For Luxury Hotel: Bhagwant Mann

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday alleged that the Badal family had taxes worth Rs 108 crore waived for a Mohali-based luxury hotel -- Sukhvilas -- by way of a "tailor-made" eco-tourism policy during the Akali regime.

The state government will take action in the matter, he said.

Addressing the media in Chandigarh, Mr Mann claimed that the Badal family claimed tax exemption worth Rs 108 crore for the luxury hotel project for a period of 10 years from 2007-2017.

He said Sukhvilas is a 7-star hotel and charges Rs 4-5 lakh per night for some rooms.

Metro Ecogreen Resort is the real name of this hotel, which is located in Palanpur village in Majri block of Mohali district, he said.

"It was a conflict of interest and misuse of power," Mr Mann alleged.

The Aam Aadmi Party leader claimed that the Akali government framed Punjab eco-tourism policy, 2009 to "facilitate" the construction of the hotel.

As construction could not take place on this land, which is a forest area, they brought the eco-tourism policy in 2009 and later brought an amendment in the law for the construction of the hotel, he alleged.

Before setting up the hotel, there used to be a poultry farm owned by the Badal family, he claimed.

"Later, the Change of Land Use permission was given to build the hotel. Who would have refused the CLU when they themselves were in power? Even though, under the Punjab Land Preservation Act, 1900, no commercial activity could be undertaken there," Mr Mann said.

Mr Mann said a Badal-owned company, Metro Ecogreen Resort Limited, took approval for nearly 20 acres on March 2, 2009 for the project.

Punjab Heritage and Tourism Promotion Board gave the approval in December 2010 for setting up an ecotourism resort in village Palanpur, he said.

Another Badal family-owned company Taj Travels Private Ltd took approval for ecotourism on a piece of land in Palanpur, he claimed Metro Ecogreen Resort purchased over 23 kanal (about 2.50 acres) land from the Taj Travels. Thus, total land accumulated was 20.8 acres, he said.

Mr Mann claimed that majority of the shares in Metro Ecogreen resort Ltd were held by the Badal family. "Sukhbir Badal holds 1.83 lakh shares of this private limited company, his wife Harsimrat Kaur Badal 81,500 shares, while Dabwali Transport Company holds 5,350 shares." The construction activity for the hotel began in May 2013 and commercial activity started from April 1, 2016.

Under the eco-tourism policy, no other hotel came up, he said. "It was only for their hotel." Mr Mann said the project was given incentives worth Rs 108.73 crore for a period from May 11, 2015 to May 10, 2025.

"State Goods and services tax (SGST) and value added tax (VAT) were waived for the project for a period of 10 years. For 10 years, State GST or VAT will not be applicable on the hotel, which works out to over Rs 85 crore," he claimed.

In addition, electricity duty of Rs 11.44 crore and luxury tax and annual licence fee of Rs 11.44 crore were waived for a period of 10 years, he claimed.

Replying to a question, Mr Mann said, "Action will be taken (in the matter). Which laws were misused. Why was this (eco-tourism) policy framed for themselves only? How CLU was taken," he said.

Uzbek National With Medicines Worth Rs 1.3 Crore Arrested At Delhi Airport

An Uzbek national carrying more than 29,000 strips of medicine, worth about Rs 1.3 crore, was arrested by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel at the Delhi airport, officials said on Thursday.

The passenger was intercepted by the security personnel on Wednesday morning at the terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport as his movement was found to be suspicious, a CISF officer said.

A bag stuffed with medicines was found from the passenger, he said. The man was headed for Tashkent in an Uzbekistan Airlines flight.

A total of 29,200 strips of Mesopril kit tablets were found in the bag, the officer said. The medicine is used for medical termination of early pregnancy, controlling excessive blood sugar level and treating gastric ulcers.

"As the passenger could not produce valid authorisation for carrying such a huge quantity of medicines, he was offloaded from the plane and handed over to customs officials," the CISF officer said.

The CISF provides a counter-terrorist and counter-sabotage cover to the Delhi airport.

Prince Harry Loses Case Against UK Over Change In Personal Security Level

Prince Harry will seek to appeal a UK court ruling Wednesday that the government acted lawfully when it downgraded the level of his personal security when he visits Britain.

The youngest son of King Charles III launched the legal action after the British government told him in February 2020 that he would no longer be given the "same degree" of publicly-funded protection when in the UK.

Harry, the Duke of Sussex, sensationally relocated to North America in 2020 with his wife Meghan, eventually settling in California in the United States, and is no longer classified as a working royal.

High Court judge Peter Lane said in a 52-page judgement that the "bespoke process" devised for him by a committee which is under the remit of the interior ministry "was, and is, legally sound".

But a legal spokesman for Harry said he will try to turn to the Court of Appeal "to obtain justice". The court -- England's second highest -- must decide whether there are grounds to hear the case.

"The duke is not asking for preferential treatment, but for a fair and lawful application of... (the) rules, ensuring that he receives the same consideration as others," Harry's spokesman added. 

The interior ministry said it was "pleased" with the judgment and was "carefully considering" its next steps.

"The UK government's protective security system is rigorous and proportionate," a ministry spokesperson added.

- 'Harm's way' -

The prince told a hearing at London's High Court in December that security concerns were preventing visits back to Britain.

"The UK is my home. The UK is central to the heritage of my children," he said in a written statement read out by his lawyers.

"That cannot happen if it's not possible to keep them safe.

"I cannot put my wife in danger like that and, given my experiences in life, I am reluctant to unnecessarily put myself in harm's way too."

Harry's mother Princess Diana was killed in a high-speed car crash in Paris in 1997 as she tried to escape paparazzi photographers.

However, lawyers for the government rejected claims that he was "singled out" and treated "less favourably" or that a proper risk analysis was not carried out.

In May last year, a judge also sided with the government over its refusal to let him pay for specialist British police protection himself.

The interior ministry argued then that it was "not appropriate" for wealthy people to "buy" protective security when it had decided that it was not in the public interest for such taxpayer-funded protection.

London's Metropolitan Police also opposed Harry's offer on the grounds that it would be wrong to "place officers in harm's way upon payment of a fee by a private individual".

- NY car chase -

The latest ruling also revealed new details about a New York car chase last May involving paparazzi that Harry and Meghan described as "near catastrophic".

The New York Police Department (NYPD), the city's mayor and a taxi driver who briefly transported the couple all subsequently downplayed the danger and duration of the pursuit.

However, a December 2023 internal NYPD letter from its intelligence chief disclosed to the High Court said a thorough review of the incident had concluded "that the behaviour in question was reckless". 

Lane's ruling said "the investigation had found reckless disregard of vehicle and traffic laws and persistently dangerous and unacceptable behaviour on the part of paparazzi during the night in question".

It also noted "there was sufficient evidence to arrest two individuals for reckless endangerment".

The legal action over his personal security is one of various lawsuits Harry has pursued in recent years in Britain, primarily concerned with alleged phone hacking by newspapers.

Earlier this month, he settled a long-running legal claim against Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN).

The prince is also bringing legal action against the publisher of the Daily Mail, while he and actor Hugh Grant are also suing News Group Newspapers (NGN), part of Rupert Murdoch's global media empire.
