Man Banned From Airline For 10 Years Because Of His 'Name', Here's What Happened

A 21-year-old man from the UK has claimed that he was mistakenly banned from flying with easyJet because of his name and date of birth, according to a report by Express.co.uk. The man identified as Kieran Harris, from Cheshire, made the shocking discovery when he was all set for a vacation to Spain with his friends. However, the day before his flight was due to take off, he received an email informing him he was unable to board the flight due to ''previous disruptive behaviour''.

He was also told he had been issued a ''10-year no-fly sanction'' with the airline, which only expired in March 2031. 

Mr. Harris claims that the airline had confused him with a man who was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison for behaving aggressively and abusively whilst drunk on an easyJet flight in 2021. To top it all, he also shares his birthday with the abusive flyer.

He said, "My friend got an email at 6 pm the night before the flight, saying they had this ten-year flight ban and I was just removed from the booking. I was gutted. I couldn't quite get my head around it. I wasn't on the booking anymore, I didn't have a seat on the flight, and there was no point in me even going to the airport.''

Thankfully, the issue was resolved after EasyJet requested a picture of his passport to confirm his identity, and eventually lifted the accidental ban, leaving him with just hours to get to his flight.

He claimed, "This has made me less likely to want to fly with easyJet in the future. I definitely don't want to fly with easyJet again."

An easyJet spokesperson apologised for the mix-up and told The Independent: “We are very sorry that Mr. Harris was incorrectly advised he couldn't fly with us. We made this decision in good faith as Mr. Harris shared the same name and date of birth and was flying from the same UK region as a passenger we'd previously banned for a serious offence onboard.

''As soon as Mr Harris contacted us we resolved the matter and while he flew as originally planned we understand the frustration this will have caused so our team are in touch with him and will offer a gesture of goodwill in light of his experience''.

However, he is so frustrated with the entire experience, that he is even thinking of getting a name change if this continues to happen.

This isn't the first time Mr. Harris has been mistaken for the convicted criminal. Previously, the Metropolitan Police stormed his house in bulletproof vests after misidentifying him as the wrong Kieran Harris. The Metropolitan Police also apologised for the mistaken identity issue.

First Train Runs From Accident-Affected Section In Odisha's Balasore

The first train on the section where the accident happened in Balasore started its journey at around 10.40 pm on Sunday, 51 hours after the horrific crash which killed 275 people, officials said.

The goods train was seen off by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw as scores of mediapersons and railway officials looked on.

The train carrying coal is headed towards Rourkela Steel plant from Vizag port and is running on the same track where the ill-fated Bangalore-Howrah train met with the tragedy on Friday.

The Howrah-bound train crashed with the capsized bogies of the Coromandel Express which had collided with a stationary freight train seconds earlier.

"Down-line restoration complete. First train movement in section," tweeted Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Barely two hours after the restoration of the downline, the upline was also restored.

An empty goods train was the first train to run on the up line of the accident affected section. This is the same track on which the Coromandel Express was running before it entered into the loop line to crash into a stationary goods train.

"Three trains have left from the section (two down and one up) and we have planned to run around seven tonight. We have to take this entire section towards normalisation.

"Our objective is to ensure that all the missing persons' family members find them as soon as possible. Our responsibility is not over yet," said a visibly emotional Vaishnaw as he announced the restoration of the accident affected section.

Around 200 bodies have so far remained unclaimed.

3 Killed As Auto-Rickshaw Hits Truck Parked On Roadside In Odisha

Three people were killed and five others injured after their auto-rickshaw hit a truck parked on the roadside in Odisha's Sambalpur district on Sunday, police said.

The accident happened near the Padhanpali toll plaza on the Sambalpur-Rourkela Biju Expressway in the Sason police station area, they said.

The dead were identified as Punam Bag, 13, her sister Nemsika Bag, 8, and their relative Benudhar Bag, 19. They were residents of Bhamarmal village in Kesinga police station area of Kalahandi district.

Police said eight people on the auto-rickshaw were going towards Khetrajpur railway station in Sambalpur from Nua Khurigaon in the Sason police station area.

After the accident, the injured persons were rushed to the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla. However, three persons succumbed to their injuries at the hospital, police said.

The injured persons, including the driver of the auto-rickshaw, were undergoing treatment at VIMSAR.

The truck and the auto-rickshaw were seized, and the driver of the truck was detained, police said.

Further investigation into the incident was underway, they said.

US Woman Arrested After Refusing Tuberculosis Treatment For More Than A Year

A woman in Washington state who refused a judge's order to isolate or have treatment for infectious tuberculosis for over a year was taken into custody on Thursday, New York Times reported. The arrest comes almost three months after a civil arrest warrant was issued for her.

The woman's name has been withheld by health officials and was identified in the court papers by the initials VN. 

In a statement on Thursday, the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department said that the woman was taken to the Pierce County Jail where she will be housed in a room ''specially equipped for isolation, testing, and treatment.''

“We are hopeful she will choose to get the lifesaving treatment she needs to treat her tuberculosis,” the statement said.

The health department initially ordered the woman to isolate in January 2022 after being diagnosed with tuberculosis, as per the Independent. The officials worked with her family and community members for more than a year to try to persuade her to get treatment, but she refused to comply. In March 2023, the county was granted a civil arrest warrant to forcibly detain her.

The department said this case marks only the third time in the past 20 years that it needed to seek a court order to detain a potentially contagious patient who refused to see treatment.

It is not clear why the woman refused to isolate or receive treatment, Washington Post said. However, her lawyer Sarah Tofflemire claimed in a filing that the woman refused treatment as she doesn't understand what is happening, as per NBC News.

Under Washington state law, health providers are required to report cases and work with patients to make sure they get treatment to cure active cases of the disease.

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease that spreads to anyone who is in close contact with a patient, like family members or friends. It is considered potentially fatal. Tuberculosis treatment takes three to nine months, according to Centres for Disease Control (CDC).

US Restaurant Employee Arrested After Bag Of Cocaine Found In Customer's Hot Dog

A restaurant employee in New Mexico, US, was arrested after he lost his bag of cocaine that somehow landed up on a customer's hot dog, police said on Sunday. According to New York Post, the man, identified as 54-year-old Jeffrey David Salazar, was working at Sonic Drive-In restaurant. He is now facing a felony charge for possession of a controlled substance, the Espanola Police said. 

As per the cops, illegal narcotics were discovered in a customer's food at the restaurant. The substance was inadvertently placed in the food as Mr Salazar was preparing the order. Police said that a "field test" confirmed that the substance discovered in the food was cocaine. 

In the incident report, the cops said that a woman called the police on Tuesday after she bit into her food only to discover she had bitten into a plastic bag. She believes any of the powered substance went into her mouth. 

According to the arrest warrant, Mr Salazar was observed on video surveillance conducting "what appeared to be a hand-to-hand transaction with a female employee". He was even seen preparing the customer's food before appearing to frantically search the area "as if he lost something".

According to the Post, Mr Salazar admitted to the police that he purchased the cocaine from someone in the restaurant's parking lot.

Meanwhile, in another such incident, earlier this year, a Brazilian drug dealer's usage of readily available cocaine for personal use became harmful for him after police arrested him while he was sleeping on a bed made of cocaine bricks. Police officers conducted a raid in the Sitio Conceicaozinha neighbourhood, in the Vicente de Carvalho district of Guaruja, to bust the local drug ring. 

The dealer was discovered intoxicated and lying over the cannabis bricks when the police arrived at the scene, seizing 105 cocaine bricks.

Special Trains To Run Between Puri And Howrah For Stranded Passengers

East Coast Railway has decided to run three Special trains between Puri and Howrah to facilitate the passengers as after the recent derailment, train services have been affected in Bhadrak-Kharagpur Railway Section on Howrah-Chennai Main Line, an official statement said on Sunday.

Due to the cancellation of trains, passengers from Puri to Howrah are likely to be stranded at Puri.

Puri Howrah Special (02801) from Puri will leave at 1900hrs (07.00 p.m.) and will run via the Jakhapura-Kendujhargarh-Dongoaposi-Kharagpur route. This train will provide stoppages at Sakhigopal, Khurda Road, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Jakhapura, Harichandanpur, Keonjhargarh, Dongoaposi, Tata and Kharagpur between Puri and Howrah having Two Sleeper Class, Six Second Class Chair Car and Two Guard cum Second Class Seating Coaches.

Puri Howrah Special (02803) from Puri will leave at 2100hrs (09.00 p.m.) and will run via the Cuttack-Angul-Sambalpur City-Jharsuguda route. This train will provide stoppages at Sakhigopal, Khurda Road, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul, Rairakhol, Sambalpur City, Jharsuguda, Rourkela, Chakradharpur, Tata and Kharagpur between Puri and Howrah having 11 Second Class Seating, Two AC Chair Car, Two Chair Car and Two Guard cum Second Class Seating Coaches.

Puri Howrah Special (02805) from Puri will leave at 2200hrs (10.00 p.m.) and will run via the Jakhapura-Kendujhargarh-Dongoaposi-Kharagpur route. This train will provide stoppages at Sakhigopal, Khurda Road, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Jakhapura, Harichandanpur, Keonjhargarh, Dongoaposi, Tata and Kharagpur between Puri and Howrah having Two MEMU Motor Car and Six MEMU Coaches.

The tragic train accident in Odisha's Balasore in which 275 people died and 1000 people were injured.

As per the Ministry of Railways, the restoration work is going in full swing and the officials are closely monitoring the restoration process at the accident site.

A manpower of over 1000 people is engaged in the work. More than seven Poclain Machines, two Accident Relief Trains, and 3-4 Railway and Road Cranes are deployed, the Ministry stated.

"Astounding Success": Nepal PM On India Visit

Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal aka 'Prachanda', on his arrival at Kathmandu, dubbed his four-day visit to India an "astounding success".

Speaking to media persons upon his arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu, PM said, "This four-day visit has basically resulted in the fulfilment of promises I made before setting foot in India. A slew of agreements of long-term importance was signed, which, in itself, is significant. With regard to the long-term power-sharing agreement, the supply of 10,000 MW of electricity over 10 years is something that we have pressed for long, I am happy that we could arrive at a deal during my visit. Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi himself made the announcement and the signing of the power-sharing deal marks an important milestone in our bilateral ties."

He stated further that the agreement will help Nepal draw big-ticket investments in the energy sector. The Nepalese PM also emphasised the potential for significant investments in the country's energy sector in light of this agreement.

During the briefing, the Nepal PM Prachanda also cited ongoing projects such as the 900 MW Arun III being implemented by the Indian company Sutlej in Sankhuwasabha, as well as the Lower Arun project, which has been entrusted to the same company.

Mr Prachanda underscored the newfound trust and foundation established through the power trade agreement, adding that it will enable the landlocked Himalayan country to meet the demands of the private sector.

He stated that this agreement has further enabled Nepal to export 1,200 MW of electricity to India, generated from the Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower Project.

Furthermore, the Nepalese PM also claimed to have eradicated the mistrust in bilateral relations between the two countries.

"Modi-Ji emphasised on Nepal-India relations stating that it should be higher than the Himalayas. He (PM Modi) referred to his visit in 2014 when he addressed the parliament, marking an exciting new chapter in our bilateral ties. He even called the events that he graced during his visit a hit. Now, we should work towards making our relations superhit," the Nepalese PM added.

Nepal, in 2020, amended its constitution to incorporate a new political and administrative map in the preamble. The new map included the tri-junction of Limpiyadhura, Kalapani and Lipulekh, which are seen as disputed areas.

Nepal's updated map incorporating the disputed territories was submitted to the Ministry of Land Management by the Department of Survey, claiming that it was based on accurate scale, projection and coordinate system. It was publicly released on May 20, 2020 after a go-ahead from the Cabinet on May 18 of the same year.

The department cited a map drawn during the Treaty of Sugauli and another brought from London, as well as receipts of land revenues payments and the order issued by the then Prime Minister, Chandra Shumsher, as evidence to claim that the disputed territories belong to Nepal.

The earlier map issued in 2032 BS had left out Gunji, Nabhi and Kuri villages. However, they were included in the revised map, adding 335 square kilometres of land.

Tensions escalated between New Delhi and Kathmandu last year over the issuance of the revised map including the tri-junction, which India earlier had included in its map issued in November 2019.

Invoking the difficult phase in the bilateral ties in 2019, Prachanda stated, "The relationship between Nepal and India back in 2019 was mired in difficulties. However, the trade and transit treaty, which was signed (during his visit to New Delhi) has ensured added benefits for Nepal for over two decades. So, it shouldn't be seen as a small agreement. The trade deficit and smooth cross-border trade were the focus areas during the deliberations, along with the promotion of agricultural goods and facilitation of customs. Hence, it could be said that my visit will help build an environment of trust between the two countries."

The Nepalese PM arrived in India on May 31 and was in the country till June 3. It was the first overseas visit by Prachanda since assuming the PM's office in December 2022. He was accompanied by a high-level delegation.

India's development assistance to Nepal features a broad-based programme focusing on creating infrastructure at the grass-roots level. Various projects have been implemented in areas of infrastructure, health, water resources, education and rural and community development.

Two important integrated checks -- at Birgunj and Biratnagar -- have been built with Indian assistance. India has built several hydroelectric projects in Nepal including Pokhara (1 MW), Trisuli (21 MW), Western Gandak (15 MW), Devighat (14.1 MW) etc. Agreements have been signed between Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) Ltd and the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) for the development and implementation of the 490.2 MW Arun-4 hydropower project.

The project is expected to generate electricity for Nepal, India as well as Bangladesh. The SJVN has a 51 per cent stake in the project while the NEA has a 49 per cent share. Nepal has also extended an invitation to Indian businesses to invest in the West Seti Hydropower Project.

India and Nepal have robust cooperation in the power sector. Three cross-border transmission lines were completed recently with India's assistance -- 400 kV Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar line (2016); 132 kV Kataiya-Kusaha and Raxaul-Parwanipur line (2017).
