IIT Bombay Clarifies Placement Status Amid 36% Unplaced Students Report

In response to reports showing that 36% of graduates at IIT Bombay are yet to secure jobs this placement season, the institute has released data from an exit survey conducted among graduating students in the academic year 2022-23.

According to the survey result shared by the institute, only 6.1% of graduates are looking for jobs, while the majority of students, accounting for 57.1%, secured jobs through IIT Bombay's placement process. Additionally, 12.2% of students opted to pursue higher degrees, while 8.3% chose careers in public service.

Furthermore, a breakdown of employment preferences among students reveals that 10.9% secured jobs outside of IIT Bombay, with 1.6% venturing into startup ventures. A small percentage, 4.3%, remain undecided about their career paths.

The institute has released these statistics to address concerns and clarify job prospects for its students amidst the ongoing economic challenges.

According to a report in the Hindustan Times, approximately 712 out of the 2,000 registered students are still without job offers this session. "It was a struggle to invite companies to the campus compared to last year due to the global economic meltdown," said an officer from IIT Bombay's placement cell, as quoted by HT.

"The majority of companies faced challenges in accepting the salary packages predetermined by the institute, requiring several rounds of negotiation before they agreed to participate," the officer added.

The officer noted that, for the first time, students registered in the Computer Science and Engineering branch, typically highly sought-after, did not achieve full placement among those enrolled. The placement process at IIT Bombay is currently in progress and will continue until May 2024.

This year witnessed a rise in the percentage of students without placements, with 35.8% remaining unplaced, marking a 2.8 percentage point increase compared to the previous session. In 2023, the HT report states that out of the 2,209 students registered at IIT Bombay, 1,485 had secured jobs, leaving 32.8% unplaced.

A significant number of the 380 companies that participated in the placement drive were domestic, contrary to the usual trend of more international firms, it adds.

In January, reports surfaced that 85 students at IIT Bombay received job offers with annual packages worth Rs 1 crore. Later, the institute had issued a clarification stating that only 22 students had received packages worth Rs 1 crore.

"The phase-I placements (December 1-20, 2023) incorrectly reported the number of accepted ₹1 crore plus offers as 85. The correct number of accepted one crore plus offers is 22. All other data reported is confirmed to be correct. The Placement Office of IIT Bombay strongly regrets this mistake," the official statement read.

Hamas Chief Accuses Israel Of Procrastination In Truce Talks

Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh accused Israel on Wednesday of procrastinating in stalled talks to secure a ceasefire in the Gaza war and a hostage release deal.

Recent negotiations have made little progress and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the Palestinian Hamas group has hardened its position.

"The Zionist occupation continues to procrastinate stubbornly, and does not respond to our fair demands for an end to the war and aggression," Haniyeh said in a recorded speech shown at a Hezbollah meeting.

Netanyahu's office said on Tuesday that Israel's negotiating team had returned from another round of discussions in Cairo.

"In the framework of the talks, under useful Egyptian mediation, the mediators formulated an updated proposal for Hamas," the premier's office said.

However, senior Hamas official Bassem Naim said on Tuesday that the group had not been sent any new proposals.

"The movement has not received any proposals from the mediators or the occupation (Israel) regarding a ceasefire and a prisoner exchange deal", he said.

In his speech shown on Wednesday ahead of comments from Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, the Qatar-based Haniyeh reiterated Hamas's conditions for peace.

These include a permanent ceasefire, a full Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, the return of displaced Gazans, unhindered entry of aid, full reconstruction of the war-ravaged territory, and "a respectable prisoner exchange deal."

Haniyeh also denounced what he said was "direct American participation" in the war in Gaza by supplying weapons and ammunition to the Israeli military.

Ex-MLA Debaraj Mohanty Resigns From BJP After Being Denied Party Ticket

Debraj Mohanty, former MLA from Aska in Odisha's Ganjam district, resigned from the BJP after being denied ticket to contest the assembly election.

On Tuesday, the BJP announced 112 candidates, including 12 in Ganjam district out of 13 assembly seats.

Debraj Mohanty, a BJD legislator from Aska in 2000, 2009 and 2014, sent his resignation to party state president Manmohan Samal.

Ahead of the 2019 election, he had resigned from the BJD after being denied a ticket and joined the saffron party. He unsuccessfully contested in the last election.

"Since I joined the BJP, I have been actively involved in all party activities in Aska. But the party did not give me a ticket," said the 71-year-old Debraj Mohanty.

In place of Debraj Mohanty, BJP has fielded Saroj Padhi, also a former MLA. Padhi was elected to the assembly in 2004 as an Independent.

"I will consult my supporters to decide on the future course of action," Debraj Mohanty said.

He has also not ruled out returning to BJD if given a ticket.

The BJD and Congress are yet to declare their candidates for Aska.

BJP Names 112 Candidates For Odisha Assembly Elections

The BJP has re-nominated 17 of its 22 sitting MLAs in Odisha while announcing the list of candidates for 112 of the 147 assembly constituencies in the state. The party dropped one legislator, Lalitendu Bidyadhar Mohapatra, from Brahmagiri constituency in Puri district and fielded his niece Upasana from the seat.

The candidates of three other seats where the party has MLAs in the outgoing assembly, were not announced during the day.

Rairangpur MLA Naba Charan Majhi has been fielded as an MP candidate from the Mayurbhanj Lok Sabha seat.

The party fielded eight women contestants including Sundergarh MLA Kusum Tete till now.

Five BJD turncoats were also named as BJP candidates.

The party also nominated former Income Tax Commissioner Sambit Tripathy in Badamba and actor-turned-politician Akash Das Nayak in Korei.

Kalahandi MP Basant Kumar Panda's son Abhinandan will contest from Nuapada.

According to the list, BJP state president Manmohan Samal will contest from Chandbali in Bhadrak district while sitting MP from Bargarh Suresh Pujari will from Brajarajnagar. Mr Pujari was denied the party ticket for contesting the Lok Sabha polls this time.

The BJP has fielded Sisir Mishra against Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik from the Hinjili Assembly constituency while former BJD MP Pratyusha Rajeswari Singh will contest against former minister and sitting MLA Arun Kumar Sahoo in the Nayagarh assembly seat.

Leader of Opposition in the Odisha Assembly Jaynarayan Mishra will contest from his traditional Sambalpur assembly seat. Former minister and ex-BJP state president KV Singhdeo will contest from Patnagarh assembly seat in Bolangir district. His wife Sangeeta Kumari Singh Deo is BJP candidate for the Bolangir Lok Sabha seat.

Five turncoats from BJD, Arabinda Dhali, Akash Das Nayak, Siddhant Mohapatra, Purna Chandra Sethi and Priyadarshi Mishra, were given BJP tickets.

Arabinda Dhali will fight from the Jayadev assembly segment in Khurda district.

Former MLA Purna Chandra Sethi, who quit BJD and joined the BJP on March 26, will contest from Khallikote assembly seat. He had won two consecutive elections from the constituency in 2009 and 2014 but was denied a ticket in 2019.

While the BJP youth leader Tankadhar Tripathy will fight the Assembly polls from Jharsuguda, MLA Kusum Tete will contest from Sundargarh Assembly seat and Biswaranjan Badajena from Jatni.

Jagannath Pradhan has been fielded from Bhubaneswar Central, Babu Singh from Bhubaneswar Ekamra and Prithiviraj Harichandan from Chilika Assembly seat.

The party also selected sitting MLA Suryabanshi Suraj – son of late leader Bishnu Sethi -- from Dhamnagar Assembly seat, Padmalochan Panda from Simulia, Rajendra Das from Soro, Gobinda Chandra Das from Remuna, Manas Kumar Dutta from Balasore, Braja Pradhan from Jaleswar, Irasis Acharya from Bhatli.

Senior BJP leader Mohan Majhi ridiculed the ruling BJD over its recent statement that the saffron party was unable to find candidates for all the 147 assembly seats.

"Now, the BJP has announced the names of 112 candidates, which is 40 more than the BJD's announced candidates of 72. We have strong candidates in all the assembly and Lok Sabha seats," Mr Majhi told reporters.

S Jaishankar On " Very Clear Instructions From PM" Over Russia-Ukraine War

Heaping praise on the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that India was able to keep a firm stand during the Russia-Ukraine conflict because there were "clear instructions" from the top leadership.

He said that PM Modi had given clear instructions to keep the interest of Indian consumers in priority despite external pressure against purchasing Russian oil.

"The biggest change that has taken place is that the same ministries and bureaucrats are now judged on the basis of their performance. So, it's about leadership and motivation," S Jaishankar said during an interaction in Rajkot, Gujarat.

Recalling the time of conflict, he said PM Modi had asked to put all the efforts in evacuating the Indian students.

"When we sensed that tensions were increasing in Ukraine, we asked the Indian students to evacuate...once the war started, I got very clear instructions that do whatever you want to at whatever cost, put the whole ministry in action, but bring all the Indian students back. That's what happens when you get clear instructions," he said.

He said that India kept the interest of its consumers on priority while purchasing Russian oil, despite external pressure.

"As people know, there was a lot of pressure on us not to buy oil from Ukraine. If we had not purchased oil from Russia, we would had to purchase from Gulf nations. It would have increased the oil prices. What you are getting at Rs 100 would have cost Rs 125," S Jaishankar said.

"I was asked how was I able to keep such a clear position despite so much pressure. I was able to because I had very clear instructions from the Prime Minister. I was told that to keep the interest of Indian consumers a priority," he added.

Recalling another serious issue during the conflict, the EAM said how the officials went to Ukraine to evacuate the students.

"During the war in Ukraine, firing was so intense in an area, that the stranded students said that they wouldn't leave their hostels unless someone from our side came there. I called my officers and two of them were sent to evacuate the students. Both of them were very brave, but I can say everyone in the room was ready to go. This is the change today," S Jaishankar further said.

"National Security Is Our Topmost Priority", Says Sonam Wangchuk

Statehood and constitutional protection under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution will not impact defence and national security-related projects in Ladakh, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk said on Tuesday. Sonam Wangchuk said this during an online meeting with climate groups and civil society organisations, convened to review preparations for the planned march to Changthang (in the east of Leh along the border with China) on April 7.

He recently went on a 21-day fast, surviving only on salt and water, to demand that Ladakh be given statehood and included under the Sixth Schedule, which will help protect the ecologically fragile region from "greedy" industries.

When a participant asked if the campaign to demand Ladakh's inclusion in the Sixth Schedule will impact defence and national security-related projects in border areas, Sonam Wangchuk said, "National security is our topmost priority. It's paramount. We are seeking protection from mindless exploitation by industries." In an online press conference last week, Sonam Wangchuk had said: "While industries exploit the riches of the Himalayas, the local people bear the brunt of disasters. The government uses taxpayers' money for rehabilitation efforts. So, those who reap the benefits are not held accountable." "Bureaucrats from places like Chandigarh or Lucknow may not fully understand its fragility. The best of all could make mistakes and the worst of all would sell it off to industries," he had said.

Post the repeal of Article 370, Ladakh became a separate Union Territory "without legislature". The Buddhist-dominated Leh district had long demanded UT status because it felt neglected by the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir government.

However, with the administration of the region now completely in the hands of bureaucrats, many in Ladakh demand that the UT be included in the Sixth Schedule, which provides for the formation of Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) with legislative, judicial, and administrative autonomy within a state.

These councils administer areas under their jurisdiction, making laws on specific matters with the governor's assent. They can establish village councils or courts for dispute resolution and can manage facilities and services within their areas, including education and healthcare. They also have the authority to impose taxes and regulate certain activities.

Ladakh's only MP, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal of the BJP, had previously demanded that the region be included in the Sixth Schedule to safeguard land, employment, and cultural identity of the local population.

Union Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda had in 2019 promised to do "whatever is required from a constitutional perspective to protect them".

In September 2019, the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) wrote to Home Minister Amit Shah and Munda, recommending that Ladakh be declared a tribal area under the Sixth Schedule.

Not only has the government failed to deliver on its promise, but it is also not providing a reason for not doing so, Sonam Wangchuk said.

"After four years of avoiding our demands, in a meeting on March 4, they clearly said no," he said, adding that the people of Ladakh would now hold them accountable for the promises they made during the last general elections. On the lines of Mahatma Gandhi's Dandi March, Sonam Wangchuk has planned the 'border march' on April 7 to show "destruction in the name of development".

Israel Approves Bill To Allow Al Jazeera Broadcast Ban Amid Hamas War

The Israeli parliament passed a bill Monday giving top ministers the authority to bar from Israel the broadcasts of news channel Al Jazeera -- a step Premier Benjamin Netanyahu is poised to take.

This law, which passed by 70 votes to 10, carries the authority to ban the broadcast of content from foreign channels but also allows the closing of their offices in Israel.

Netanyahu has vowed to take "immediate action" to shut down Al Jazeera in Israel once the law passes.

Israel had claimed in January that an Al Jazeera staff journalist and a freelancer killed in an air strike in Gaza were "terror operatives".

The following month it said another journalist for the channel, wounded in a separate strike, was a "deputy company commander" with Hamas.

Israeli troops have been fighting against Hamas in Gaza since October.

Al Jazeera has fiercely denied the accusations and accused Israel of systematically targeting Al Jazeera employees in the Gaza Strip.

The bill permitting officials to stop foreign media deemed to harm national security had already passed its first parliamentary hurdle last month.

Netanyahu's Likud party said he asked "to make sure that the law to close Al Jazeera will be approved this evening" in Israel's parliament, the Knesset.

Al Jazeera's bureau chief in the Palestinian territory, Wael al-Dahdouh, was also wounded, in an Israeli strike in December that killed the network's cameraman.

The war between Israel and Hamas began with the militant group's October 7 attack that resulted in about 1,160 deaths in Israel, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

Israel's retaliatory campaign has killed at least 32,845 people, mostly women and children, according to the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza.
