Delhi Man Declares Living Son Dead To Claim Rs 2 Crore Insurance, Case Filed

A father falsely declared his son dead and obtained a fake cremation certificate to claim a term insurance amount of Rs 2 crore, DCP Dwarka said on Monday. An FIR has been registered against the accused.

DCP Dwarka Ankit Singh said, "In Najafgarh, on March 5, 2025, we received a PCR call of a man reporting his son's bike accident. Father Satish said that his son Gagan was dead and had been cremated. The case was suspicious. ACP Najafgarh asked for a detailed report. The Investigation Officer inquired thoroughly. It was revealed that there was no accident and there was no CCTV footage of one bike hitting another bike."

He further added that even local informers were unaware of any such accident.

"The caller was interrogated. The father said that his son met with an accident and was taken to a rural health centre. From there, he was taken to a private hospital. After his death, he was cremated in Hapur. He also showed a cremation certificate. During interrogation, it was revealed that the father had got his son's term insurance of Rs 2 crore done before 3 months. He orchestrated a plan with an advocate called Manmohan," he further said.

He revealed that the accused was under financial distress due to outstanding loans and debts.

"His financial condition was not good. The advocate supported him. The advocate suggested him to get false documents from a private hospital," he added.

An FIR has been registered in the case.

PM Modi Announces "Yoga For One Earth, One Health" As 2025 Yoga Day Theme

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced "Yoga for One Earth, One Health" as the theme of this year's International Day of Yoga and said the day had taken "the shape of a grand festival".

The United Nations proclaimed June 21 as the International Day of Yoga with an aim to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practising yoga. It was first celebrated in 2015.

Sharing India's vision for a healthier world population in his monthly "Mann ki Baat" radio broadcast, Modi said, "The theme of yoga day, 2025, has been kept as 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health'. That is, we wish to make the whole world healthy through yoga." The prime minister noted that, alongside fitness, keeping a count was also becoming a habit, citing examples of people keeping tabs on the number of steps taken, calories consumed and burnt in a day.

"Amid all these counts, another countdown is about to begin. The countdown to the International Day of Yoga. Now, less than 100 days are left for yoga day. If you have not yet included yoga in your life, do it now. It is not too late yet," he said.

Noting the first International Day of Yoga was celebrated 10 years ago, Modi said, "Now this day has taken the shape of a grand festival of yoga. This is such a priceless gift from India to humanity, which is going to be very useful for future generations." "It is a matter of pride for all of us that, today, the curiosity about our yoga and traditional medicine is rising all over the world. A large number of youngsters are adopting yoga and Ayurveda as excellent mediums for wellness," the prime minister said.

Citing the example of Chile, he said Ayurveda was rapidly becoming popular in the South American country. "Last year, during my visit to Brazil, I met the president of Chile. We had a lot of discussions about the popularity of Ayurveda." Acknowledging the fast-growing popularity of Ayush systems across the globe and the contribution of key stakeholders, he said, "I have come to know about a team named 'Somos India'. In Spanish, it means 'We are India'. This team has been promoting yoga and Ayurveda for almost a decade. Their focus is on treatment as well as educational programmes." They are also getting information related to yoga and Ayurveda translated to Spanish.

"If we talk about last year alone, about 9,000 people participated in their myriad events and courses. I congratulate all the people associated with this team for their efforts," Modi said.

The prime minister also appealed to everyone to incorporate yoga into their routines and take pride in the country's traditional wisdom for overall wellbeing.

Key Accused Involved In Sending Man To US Via 'Dunki' Route Arrested In Delhi

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Sunday arrested a key accused involved in sending a man illegally to the US via the 'dunki' route.

Gagandeep Singh alias Goldie of West Delhi's Tilak Nagar was arrested in Delhi.

The victim, who hails from the Tarn Taran district of Punjab, was deported back to India earlier this month, NIA said in a statement. He was sent to the US via the infamous Dunki route in December 2024, it said.

The term 'dunki,' which is believed to have originated from the word "donkey," refers to an illegal pathway that immigrants take to enter countries like the US without proper documentation. Their risky and arduous travel is usually facilitated by a human trafficking syndicate.

The victim in this case had paid around Rs 45 Lakh to the accused agent for the illegal immigration, as per his complaint.

The victim was deported to India by the US authorities on February 15. He filed a complaint against the agent after the deportation.

The case was originally registered by the Punjab Police and taken over by the NIA on March 13.

NIA investigations revealed that Goldy, who did not possess any licence or legal permit or registration for sending people abroad, had used the "donkey route" and sent the victim to the US via Spain, Salvador, Guatemala and Mexico.

"Donkers/associates of Goldie had even beaten up and exploited the victim, besides snatching the dollars he was carrying, during the arduous journey, NIA investigations further revealed," the statement read.

'Saw NRI Man Hitting Saif Ali Khan': Actor Amrita Ladak On Hotel Brawl Case

Bollywood actor Amrita Arora Ladak on Saturday deposed as a witness before a court here in the case concerning Saif Ali Khan, who was accused of attacking an NRI businessman and his father-in-law at a five-star hotel in 2012.

The actor was part of the group that had gone for dinner with Khan at the hotel when the alleged incident took place on February 22, 2012.

She told the court that the hotel had allotted a separate enclosure to them, and they were dining there and having a good time.

In the meantime, the complainant came there and began shouting and abusing them, she said.

"We saw someone barging into our enclosure and, in a very loud, aggressive voice, told us to shut up and keep quiet. We all got shocked at what was happening," she said, adding that actor Khan immediately stood up and apologised.

The man then left and they continued with their dinner, she said.

After a while, when Khan excused himself to go to the washroom, they heard loud voices, one of them being that of the Bollywood actor, Ladak told the court.

Moments later, they saw the man barging into their enclosure and hitting Khan, Ladak deposed.

Everyone then intervened and separated the two. That's when the man started abusing them and threatening them with "dire consequences", she added.

Khan was with Kareena Kapoor, her sister Karishma, Malaika Arora Khan, Amrita Arora Ladak and a few male friends at the hotel when the brawl broke out with NRI businessman Iqbal Sharma.

According to police, when Sharma protested the raucous chatter of the actor and his friends, Saif allegedly threatened him and subsequently punched Sharma in the nose, fracturing it.

The NRI businessman also accused Saif and his friends of hitting his father-in-law Raman Patel.

However, Saif had maintained that Sharma made provocative statements or rather used abusive language against women with him and this led to the ruckus.

Saif and his two friends - Shakeel Ladak and Bilal Amrohi - have been charge-sheeted under section 325 (assault) of the Indian Penal Code.

"We're Going To Have It": Trump On Greenland Ahead Of Visit By JD Vance

US President Donald Trump ramped up his claims to Greenland on Wednesday, saying ahead of a visit by Vice President JD Vance that the United States needed to take control of the Danish island.

"We need Greenland for international safety and security. We need it. We have to have it," Trump told podcaster Vince Coglianese. "I hate to put it that way, but we're going to have to have it."

Vance is to accompany his wife Usha on Friday to the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland.

Since returning to power in January, Trump has insisted he wants to take over Greenland for national security purposes, refusing to rule out the use of force to do so.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland's outgoing Prime Minister Mute Egede harshly criticized plans by a US delegation to visit the Arctic island uninvited.

A self-governing territory that is seeking to emancipate itself from Copenhagen, Greenland holds massive untapped mineral and oil reserves, though oil and uranium exploration are banned.

It is also strategically located between North America and Europe at a time of rising US, Chinese and Russian interest in the Arctic, where sea lanes have opened up because of climate change.

UK's Royal Society Decides Not To Take Action Against Elon Musk

Britain's Royal Society has decided the scientific academy will not take any action against a famous member, U.S. tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, after fellows met to discuss potential disciplinary measures, British media reported on Wednesday.

The Royal Society, which began in 1660 and is the oldest national scientific academy in continuous existence, said last month that it would hold a meeting to discuss "principles around the public pronouncements and behaviours of fellows" after thousands of scientists expressed their concerns about Musk's membership.

Musk, who owns X and has been a close aide to Donald Trump since the US president took office in January, was elected as a fellow in 2018 for his technological achievements in space travel and electric vehicles.

The Guardian newspaper said Adrian Smith, the Royal Society's president, had written to members to rule out disciplinary proceedings. Past fellows of the Society have included Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking.

In a statement, The Royal Society said any issues about the behaviour of its fellows were dealt with in strict confidence.

But it added that the view of its governing council was "that making judgements on the acceptability of the views and actions of fellows, particularly those that might be regarded as political, could do more harm than good to the Society and the cause of science in general".

Almost 3,500 scientists had signed an open letter expressing dismay at what they described as "continued silence and apparent inaction" from the Royal Society over Musk's fellowship.

They said Musk's behaviour, including what they said was embracing conspiracy theories, breached the Royal Society's code of conduct, while the situation had become more serious because of his position in Trump's administration, which they said had engaged in "an assault on scientific research".

Musk has not commented on X, his usual place for public remarks, on the scientists' letter.

Simultaneous Polls Do Not Trample Constitution: Attorney General To Joint Panel

Attorney General R Venkatramani told a parliamentary panel on Tuesday that the bills for simultaneous elections do not trample on any feature of the Constitution and are good in law, sources said.

With a few of the legal experts who have appeared before the Joint Committee of Parliament sharing concerns of some members over certain aspects of the constitution amendment bill, R Venkatramani asserted that the proposed laws do not require any amendment, the sources said.

Opposition parties have slammed the bills as violative of the Constitution.

However, former Delhi High Court chief justice D N Patel, who is currently serving as Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal chairman, in his presentation dwelt on the positives as well as challenges facing the "One Nation One Election" proposal, noting the concept is good for the nation but adding any proposed law can always be improved on.

Justice Patel cited policy continuity, enhanced governance with a focus on long-term policies, informed voting with people in a position for better assessment of the performance of political parties and cost reductions as positives.

He, however, noted "federalism concerns with potential impact on state autonomy", a risk of national issues overshadowing regional ones besides the constitutional hurdles of the need to amend some of the Articles as among the challenges facing the proposals.

He said the tenures of some of the assemblies could be extended in a step towards synchronization of state polls with the Lok Sabha elections, an idea not part of the current bills.

The sources said Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra questioned if countries like Sweden and Belgium can be compared with a country like India when Patel cited them as examples of the global practice of simultaneous polls.

She also said all the claims about the benefits of simultaneous elections are mostly conjectures, as no study has been done.

R Venkatramani, the sources said, told the members that he is the Attorney General for India and not the government, in an apparent attempt to dispel any impression that he will side with the government's opinion on the matter.

He told the members of the committee headed by BJP MP P P Chaudhary that he would submit replies to their further questions sent to him.

Mr Chaudhary later told reporters that simultaneous elections are in the interest of the country, and the committee is deliberating on the best ways to carry it out.

The views received by legal luminaries will help the panel form its recommendations, he said.

"Will The Law Equally Deployed Against...": Kunal Kamra On Studio Vandalism

Comedian Kunal Kamra condemned the demolition of a studio in Mumbai where supporters of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde barged in and protested against his jokes on Mr Shinde.

Mr Kamra in a post on X said an entertainment venue is merely a platform and has no power or control over what he says or does, so attacking a venue is "senseless".

"An entertainment venue is merely a platform. A space for all sorts of shows. Habitat (or any other venue) is not responsible for my comedy, nor does it have any power or control over what I say or do. Neither does any political party. Attacking a venue for a comedian's words is as senseless as overturning a lorry carrying tomatoes, because you didn't like the butter chicken you were served," Mr Kamra said.

Referring to what he called "political leaders threatening to teach" him a lesson, Mr Kamra said the right to freedom of speech and expression is "not only to be used to fawn over the powerful and rich even though today's media would have us believe otherwise".

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

"Your inability to take a joke at the expense of a powerful public figure does not change the nature of my right. As far as I know, it is not against the law to poke fun at our leaders and the circus that is our political system," the comedian said.

He said he is willing to cooperate with the police and courts for any lawful action taken against him. However, he raised a question, "... Will the law be fairly and equally deployed against those who have decided that vandalism is the appropriate response to being offended by a joke? And against the unelected members of the BMC, who have arrived today at Habitat, without prior notice, and tore the place down with hammers?"

Mr Kamra said he may opt for Elphinstone bridge or any other structure that needs to be demolished as his next show's venue.

The bridge he referred to saw a stampede in September 2017, killing 23 people. Before the tragedy happened, Mumbaikars had been raising concern over the condition of the bridge and asked the authorities to demolish the old bridge and make a new one. One post on X (then Twitter) a year before the incident tagged the Prime Minister and the then Railway Minister and it turned almost prophetic.

Mr Kamra also criticised people who have been constantly calling his number.

"To those who are busy leaking my number or calling me incessantly: I am sure you've realised by now that all unknown calls go to my voicemail, where you will be subjected to the very song that you hate," he said. "To the media faithfully reporting this circus: Remember that press freedom in India ranks at 159. I will not apologise. What I said is exactly what Mr Ajit Pawar (1st deputy CM) said about Mr Eknath Shinde (2nd Deputy CM). I don't fear this mob and I will not be hiding under my bed, waiting for this to die down," the comedian said.

The action against the studio by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) came a day after Habitat Studio and Unicontinental hotel where it is located were ransacked on Sunday night by Shiv Sena workers.

A temporary shed and other structures comprising the studio, which was created in the basement of the hotel, has been razed, a civic official said.

"It was removed as there is no civic permission to create a studio in the basement. The BMC will check the hotel to see if everything is as per the allowed plan," the official said.

Earlier on Monday, Habitat Studio announced they were shutting down after Shiv Sena workers vandalised their premises.

In an Instagram post, the studio said they were "shocked, worried and extremely broken by the recent acts of vandalism targeting us."

Habitat Studio is the same venue where the controversial 'India's Got Latent' show was filmed. It also led to a huge controversy in February.

Developing "Privileged Strategic Partnership" With India: Russian Foreign Minister

Russia is developing "privileged strategic partnership" with India, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Monday.

Lavrov said at an event that Russia is actively expanding ties with countries like China, India, Iran, North Korea and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries, the state-run TASS news agency reported on Monday.

"We prioritize boosting ties with the majority of global states," he said at a meeting of the board of trustees of the Alexander Gorchakov Public Diplomacy Fund.

"The relations of comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation with the People's Republic of China boast an unprecedented level of mutual trust. Particularly privileged strategic partnership is developing with India," the top Russian diplomat said.

Lavrov added that serious progress has been reached in expanding and deepening of friendly ties with such states as Iran and North Korea.

Moscow puts special emphasis on strengthening of all areas of cooperation with allies and partners among CIS member states, including within the framework of the Commonwealth, as well as the Collective Security Treaty Organization and the Eurasian Economic Union, Lavrov said.

In his congratulatory message to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of India's 76th Republic Day in January, Putin said that Russian-Indian relations are based on "special and privileged strategic partnership".

President Putin is expected to travel to India this year as part of the established framework for reciprocal annual engagements between the leaders of the two nations.

Putin and PM Modi maintain regular contact, holding telephone conversations once every couple of months. The two leaders also hold in-person meetings, particularly on the sidelines of international events.

In July last, Prime Minister Modi made a two-day visit to Moscow to attend the 22nd Russia-India summit. In October, he visited the Russian city of Kazan for the BRICS summit.

"Shocks Our Conscience": Supreme Court On Demolition Of Houses In Prayagraj

The Supreme Court on Monday slammed the Uttar Pradesh government over its "high handed" demolition in Prayagraj saying it had shocked its conscience.

A bench comprising Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan also frowned upon the manner which the houses were bulldozed within 24 hours of serving notices without the time to appeal.

"It shocks our conscience how the residential premises were demolished in a high handed manner. The manner in which the whole process has been conducted is shocking. Courts cannot tolerate such process. If we tolerate in one case it will continue," the bench said.

The top court said it would allow the reconstruction of the demolished homes at the cost of the petitioners given their undertakings of filing the appeals before the appellate authority within the specified time and not claiming equities over the plot or creating third-party interests.

If their appeals get dismissed, the court said, the petitioners must demolish the houses at their own cost. The matter was adjourned to enable the petitioners to file the undertaking.

Defending state action, attorney general R Venkataramani assured of following the adequate "due process" in serving the notices.

He pointed out large-scale illegal occupations saying it was difficult for the state government to control unauthorised possession.

The top court had previously slammed the Uttar Pradesh government over the demolition of houses in Prayagraj without following due legal procedure and said the action sends a "shocking and wrong signal".

The counsel for the petitioners had said the state government wrongly demolished the houses thinking the land belonged to gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed, who was killed in 2023 in a police encounter.

The top court was hearing a plea by advocate Zulfiqar Haider, professor Ali Ahmed and others whose houses were demolished.

The Allahabad High Court rejected their plea challenging the demolition.

The petitioners alleged to have been served notice on March 6, 2021 in respect of certain constructions standing over a portion of Nazul Plot No. 19, Lukerganj, police station Khuldabad in Prayagraj district.

K Palaniswami, referring to dumping of sewage and faeces said no one with faith in democracy could tolerate it. In case lawful action was not taken, the former chief minister warned of stern action after his party assumes power. State Assembly election is due in Mar-Apr 2026.

VCK chief Thirumavalavan said the incident was the peak of uncivilised behaviour; one that could bring a bad name to the DMK government. MDMK top leader Vaiko said such despicable incidents by cowards, who could not challenge an opinion by way of counterpoints could never be allowed.

Annamalai said, "we can realise based on whose instigation this is happening," as police allegedly did not act even 3-hours after the intruders had trespassed into Shankar's house. TVK's Anand said legal action was the only recourse if someone's criticism was not acceptable and condemned orchestrating such atrocity.

Asked on action being taken, a senior police official said a probe was on and appropriate action will be taken.

Meanwhile, a city police release, citing a complaint from Shankar's mother said a 20-member group barged into the house, used abusive language and issued threat. "Legal action will be taken on the basis of the complaint," the statement added.

Shankar posted on 'X', a video clip, from CCTV footage, of sewage being poured into his compound and he claimed human faeces was also dumped inside his house.

He alleged that the attack on his house was telecast live by a Tamil Nadu Congress Committee supporter on Facebook and he provided a link to that telecast on his 'X' account. Shankar told reporters that the group took away his 68-year old mother, Kamala's phone, who was alone in the house at that time, and spoke to him on a video call and threatened him.

He alleged the attack was carried out by a group of persons claiming to be sanitary workers and that they gained access by breaking open the backside door of his house. The intruders included some women as well.

Though police was alerted immediately, Shankar claimed they did not arrive at the spot "till 40 minutes." The Youtuber alleged that the intruders issued "death threat," to him. On the trigger to the incident, Shankar claimed that in December 2024 he exposed "corruption" vis-a-vis the use of 230 vehicles, provided under a government scheme, for sewage clearance related tasks and a top Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) leader had a key role in facilitating corruption and receipt of kickbacks.

He said an FIR had been filed against him for allegedly denigrating sanitary workers. It was a false accusation against him, he claimed and asserted he had only spoken in favour of sanitary workers and only in order to protect their interests.

Shankar, a political activist as well alleged that a top police official was also behind the attack. "No one knows that I am here in this house, no one knows this address, I have been living here only for the past 3 months." Shankar alleged that without the top police official's help the attack could not have happened. Only one sub-inspector and a constable were sent to his house. Shankar claimed that all along he had been getting threats, asking him to stop his media related work. "I see this as the final warning since I have been talking against this (DMK regime) government and the police." Also, he said his landlord has now asked him to vacate the house and pressure was being exerted on him to stop his work.

"This government will stoop to such a level and this is what I have been saying for the past 4 years," he told media. In the social media, Savukku Shankar said on Monday night that, "he does not like to run media (YouTube Channel--Savukku Media) by putting at risk the life of his mother." Further, he said, "this channel cannot be run, this is not my failure, but this is the failure of this society." Shankar said the property owner who had provided office space to run the channel has also asked him to vacate.

"Coming To Terms With...": Missing Indian Student's Parents Break Down

The parents of Indian student Sudiksha Konanki, who went missing from a beach in the Dominican Republic on March 6, have said in an emotional announcement that they are coming to terms with the fact that she has drowned.

In a video, Ms Konanki's father Subbarayudu can be seen fighting back tears as he says that authorities "on both sides", presumably from the US and the Dominican Republic, have told them that the waves were very high at the time of the incident and that the person of interest in the case, 22-year-old Joshua Riibe, was not a suspect.

With his wife, Sreedevi, sobbing beside him, Mr Konanki says, "Both sides of the authorities have shown us how high the ocean waves were at the time of the incident and both sides of the authorities have clarified that the person of interest was not a suspect from the beginning."

Wiping away a tear from his eye, he continues speaking but gets only as far as "It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart..." when his wife cups her face with her hands, sobbing louder, and turns away from the camera. Mr Konanki comforts her and pulls her towards him before saying, "...and a heavy heart that we are coming to terms with the fact that our daughter has drowned. This is incredibly difficult for us to process. We kindly ask you to keep our daughters in your prayers."

CNN has reported that the Konankis have asked for their daughter to be declared dead to "seek closure".

Ms Konanki, 20, a citizen of India and a permanent resident of the United States, studied at the University of Pittsburgh. She went to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic with five friends on March 3.

Footage from March 5 shows her drinking at the bar of a hotel called Riu Republica before going to the beach with a group of people, including Riibe.

Ms Konanki was seen entering the beach at 4.15 am and all of her friends had returned by 5 am. Riibe, an Iowa resident and student at St Clou State University in Minnesota, told authorities that he had tried to rescue her after they were dragged in by a wave and she got tired of swimming

Riibe's passport was confiscated by authorities in the Dominican Republic and he was interviewed for six hours, but he is not considered a suspect.

The request for the student being declared dead "supports the wishes of Ms Konanki's grieving parents to seek closure in their request that the Dominican law enforcement authorities acknowledge the death of their daughter by accidental drowning," the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office in Virginia, where Ms Konanki's family lives, told CNN.

Israel Minister Threatens To Annex Parts Of Gaza Unless Hamas Frees Hostages

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz threatened Friday to annex parts of the Gaza Strip unless Hamas militants release the remaining Israeli hostages held in the war-battered Palestinian territory.

The warning came as Israel stepped up the renewed assault it launched on Tuesday, shattering the relative calm that had reigned in the war-battered territory since a January 19 ceasefire.

Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli strikes killed 11 people on Friday -- three in pre-dawn strikes and eight more during the daytime.

On Thursday, it reported a death count of 504 since the bombardment resumed, one of the highest since the war began more than 17 months ago with Hamas's attack on Israel.

"I ordered (the army) to seize more territory in Gaza... The more Hamas refuses to free the hostages, the more territory it will lose, which will be annexed by Israel," Katz said in a statement.

Should Hamas not comply, Katz also threatened "to expand buffer zones around Gaza to protect Israeli civilian population areas and soldiers by implementing a permanent Israeli occupation of the area".

The military urged residents of the Al-Salatin, Al-Karama and Al-Awda areas of southern Gaza to evacuate their homes on Friday ahead of a threatened strike.

"For your safety, head south toward the known shelters immediately," Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee said in a post on X.

AFP images from northern Gaza showed donkey carts piled high with belongings as residents fled their homes along rubble-strewn roads.

- 'Pressure points' -

Israel resumed intensive bombing of Gaza on Tuesday, citing deadlock in indirect negotiations on next steps in the truce after its first stage expired early this month.

Its resumption of large-scale military operations was coordinated with US President Donald Trump's administration but drew widespread condemnation.

Turkey condemned what it said was a "deliberate" attack by Israel on a Turkish-built hospital in Gaza. "We strongly condemn the destruction by Israel of the Turkish-Palestinian Friendship Hospital," its foreign ministry said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed "concern" over the fresh Israeli assault in a telephone call Friday with the ruler of Qatar, one of the mediators of the January ceasefire.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog expressed concern about the government's actions in a video statement on Thursday, saying it was "unthinkable to resume fighting while still pursuing the sacred mission of bringing our hostages home".

Thousands of protesters have rallied in Jerusalem in recent days, accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of resuming military operations without regard for the safety of the hostages.

Of the 251 hostages seized during Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack, 58 are still held by Gaza militants, including 34 the Israeli military says are dead.

The Israeli military said on Thursday that it had closed off the territory's main north-south route as it expanded the ground operations which resumed on Wednesday.

- Projectiles from Gaza -

Israel's military said it intercepted two projectiles fired from northern Gaza on Friday after air raid sirens sounded in the southern city of Ashkelon.

On Thursday, sirens went off in central Israel as Hamas said it fired rockets at Tel Aviv in its first military response to Israel's resumed offensive. The military said it intercepted one rocket, while two hit an uninhabited area.

"We will intensify the fight with aerial, naval and ground shelling as well as by expanding the ground operation until hostages are freed and Hamas is defeated, using all military and civilian pressure points," Katz said.

He said these included implementing Trump's proposal for the United States to redevelop Gaza as a Mediterranean resort after the relocation of its Palestinian inhabitants to other Arab countries.

When asked if Trump was trying to get a Gaza ceasefire back on track Thursday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that the president "fully supports" Israel's renewed Gaza operations.

Israel rejected negotiations for a promised second stage of the truce, calling instead for the return of all of its remaining hostages under an extended first stage.

That would have meant delaying talks on a lasting ceasefire, and was rejected by Hamas as an attempt to renegotiate the original deal.

US Woman, 36, Brutally Beats 14-Year-Old Student For Bullying Her Son

A 36-year-old woman in the US is facing criminal charges for attacking a 14-year-old boy who had allegedly been bullying her son. According to the New York Post, the incident took place on March 6. The woman, identified as Latea Hentz, allegedly barged onto her son's middle school bus with her teen daughter and beat her son's alleged bully so badly that the child suffered a broken nose. A video, captured by the bus' security camera, showed Ms Hentz, her daughter, 17, and her son, 13, attacking the eighth-grade student in Warren Township, a suburb of Indianapolis.

In the clip, as the incident unfolds, the Warren Township School bus driver can be heard telling the woman that no parents are permitted on the bus. However, Ms Hentz allegedly tells the driver she is coming on and to call the police as the three of them make their way over to the student. "Beat his a**, beat his a**," the woman screamed as she and her children punched the student in the mob attack, as per the Post

Ms Hentz and her children stopped beating the eighth-grader only after the police arrived. However, on the way out of the bus, she allegedly made an open threat to other students and said, "I'm going to tear this up" and "I'm tired of you b****h-a** kids".

The 36-year-old told the cops that the victim was bullying her son for several weeks and had even slapped him the day before the attack. She also claimed that her son's school was aware of the bullying but did nothing to stop it.

According to the Post, the police said that the 14-year-old was beaten so badly by the woman and her kids that when he was taken to Riley Children's Hospital for treatment, doctors determined his nose was fractured and his left eye was bruised and swollen.

Initially, Ms Hentz's son gave a different account of what happened leading up to and during the March 6 attack. On the other hand, the victim, who is half Mexican, told investigators that Ms Hentz's son had been picking on him and had been making "racist jokes" and "comments about ICE". He then claimed that "he had been jumped by a mom and her kids."

On Tuesday, the Marion County Prosecutor's Office charged the mother with four felonies: criminal confinement, battery resulting in moderate injury, intimidation, and criminal trespass. According to the outlet, Ms Hentz's two children are also facing possible criminal charges concerning the fight as officials continue to investigate the incident.

Infiltration Attempts Go Up In J&K, Agencies Crackdown On Overground Workers

A surge in infiltration attempts by heavily armed terrorists along the International Border in Jammu sector has become a major cause of concern for New Delhi, prompting a crackdown on overground workers aiding them.

Agencies operating in Jammu and Kashmir say that more than four dozen terrorists have managed to sneak into India and set up their bases in the upper reaches of the Pir Panjal range over the past year.

Inputs shared among intelligence agencies suggest that the number of foreign terrorists affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed has gone up by five times compared to local terrorists.

Figures from the Ministry of Home Affairs reveal that around 120 terrorists are active in J&K, of which only about 20 are locals and the rest are foreign-trained terrorists who have snuck in.

Last month, a heavily armed group of terrorists had opened fire at a Jammu and Kashmir Rifles patrol vehicle in the Sunderbani area of Rajouri district. An investigation has revealed that a group of terrorists that had freshly infiltrated into J&K was responsible for the attack. The group is still being tracked.

Inputs being shared by various agencies with the local police indicate that infiltration attempts will rise in the coming months and this issue was discussed during a review meeting chaired by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan earlier this month. Mr Mohan, who was on his first visit to Jammu, was tasked by Home Minister Amit Shah with reviewing the ongoing audit being done by forces that guard the border in the region.

Following the review, the National Investigating Agency (NIA) conducted raids on Wednesday in 12 locations in Jammu, including the premises of alleged terrorist sympathisers.

"Among the premises which were raided include the homes of overground workers (OGWs) linked to the newly-formed offshoots and affiliates of banned terrorist organisations such as Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM)," the NIA said in a statement.

The agency said it was acting on information regarding the infiltration of LeT and JeM terrorists into India through the International Border and Line of Control. Intel reports suggested that the infiltration was facilitated by OGWs and terror associates living in border areas.

Besides providing logistical support, food, shelter and money, the suspects were involved in guiding the terrorists through the difficult terrain of Jammu province to ensure their safe passage, the NIA said.

The terrorists were then believed to have made their way to the hinterland districts of Kathua, Udhampur, Doda, Kishtwar, Reasi, Rajouri, Poonch, and also to the Kashmir valley, it added.

Indian Railways In Sound Financial Condition, Covid Losses Recovered: Ashwini Vaishnaw

Indian Railways' financials are in good condition with continuous improvement efforts underway, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

During a debate on the working of the Railways Ministry, Mr Vaishnaw noted that the national transporter has overcome Covid-related challenges and recovered the losses, with passengers returning to train travel and both passenger and cargo traffic showing growth.

During 2023-24, Indian Railways reported a revenue of approximately Rs 2.78 lakh crore against expenses of Rs 2.75 lakh crore. Major expenditure components include staff costs (Rs 1.16 lakh crore), pension payments (Rs 66,000 crore), energy expenses (Rs 32,000 crore), and financing costs (Rs 25,000 crore).

"Railways is fulfilling its expenses from its own income because of good performance. ...Overall, the financial condition is good and we are trying to improve it on constant basis," Mr Vaishnaw stated.

The minister highlighted that Railways subsidises passenger fares while generating revenue from cargo and freight operations.

While the actual cost per kilometer stands at Rs 1.38, passengers are charged only 73 paise, resulting in a total passenger subsidy of approximately Rs 57,000 crore for 2023-24.

Mr Vaishnaw emphasised that Indian train fares remain the lowest compared to neighbouring countries.

"If you look at a journey of 350 km, Rs 121 is the fare of general class in India, Rs 400 in Pakistan, Rs 413 in Sri Lanka. This is the same in almost all categories," he noted, adding that fares have remained unchanged since 2020.

In spite of the rise in fuel prices, wage costs due to implementation of Seventh Pay commission, we have not hiked the fares since 2020 and have tried to offset it with cargo income, he said.

"The financial condition of Railways is more or less recovered since the COVID-19 slump," Mr Vaishnaw said.

Energy costs have "stabilized" at Rs 30,000-32,000 crore, with the railways financially benefiting from electrification initiatives implemented after 2019.

The minister also outlined several achievements, including increased passenger and cargo traffic.

By March 31 this year, Indian Railways is projected to rank among the world's top three countries in cargo carrying capacity at 1.6 billion tonnes, behind only China and the United States.

Other notable accomplishments include replacement of about 50,000 km of tracks, construction of more than 12,000 underpasses and flyovers, rebuilding of 14,000 bridges, and manufacturing of 41,000 Linke-Hofmann-Busch coaches (LHC).

"In the third term, Integral Coach Factory (ICF) coaches will be replaced with LHC coaches," Mr Vaishnaw added.

The minister said that this year 1,400 locomotives are being produced in India, which is more than the combined production of America and Europe. This is a big achievement. Also, about 2 lakh new wagons have been added to the entire fleet of Indian Railways.

Indian railway passenger coaches are being sent to Mozambique, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, while locomotives are being exported to Mozambique, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Bangladesh.

Today, the under-frame of the bogie is being exported to the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, France, Australia and other countries. The important part of the power train, propulsion, is being exported to France, Mexico, Germany, Spain, Romania and Italy.

Mr Vaishnaw said there is a laser-sharp focus on railway safety. Many technical changes have been made. Longer rails, electronic interlocking, level-crossing gates, fog safety devices and 'Kavach' are being rolled out rapidly. Now more work is being done than ever before and the results of which are visible.

In 2025, the railway will also achieve Scope 1 Net Zero. The target of Scope 2 is by 2030, he said, adding that the amount of carbon dioxide emitted and the work done by the railway to benefit the environment will be completely offset.

HAL Loses Rs 55 Lakh After Payment For Fighter Jet Parts To 'Fake' Company

The email was fake, but the money was real. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited or HAL lost $63,000 or Rs 55 lakh to cyber fraud.

HAL Kanpur's Additional General Manager, Ashok Kumar Singh, filed a police complaint on March 13. The police have registered a case under the IT Act as the company fell victim to an online scam.

In May 2024, HAL sought a price quotation for three fighter aircraft parts from a US-based company. The company responded and then they carried the conversation over mail. Somewhere along the way, a fake email entered the conversation.

"HAL got in touch with a US company, PS Engineering Incorporated, to buy aircraft parts. When the talks began there was a legitimate email ID. Somewhere in the middle, the proper email was replaced with a fake one. There was only one difference between the two IDs: the missing letter 'e'," said DCP crime Anjali Vishwakarma.

"Due to this mistake being overlooked, HAL made the payment in a wrong account which was not the account of the proper vendor. When the vendor said that he did not receive any payment, then this fraud came into limelight. In this, HAL has paid approximately $63,000 i.e. Rs 55 lakh in a fraud account," said the police officer.

The police officer further said that it is not clear if another US-based company defrauded HAL or if it was an Indian entity.

"Grateful To PM...": Congress Leader Who Once Contested Against Him

Dinsha Patel, former Union Minister and veteran Congress leader from Gujarat, on Saturday, showered praise on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for conceptualising and building the Statue of Unity in the state, which he said was a momentous tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the first Deputy Prime Minister as well as Home Minister of India.

In an exclusive interaction with IANS, the former Union Minister applauded the efforts and endeavours of PM Modi in bringing to reality the world's tallest statue in honour of the 'Iron Man of India'.

"We respect, we appreciate, and we bow down before him for building the Statue of Unity... He is my friend. We maintain a good relationship. He speaks well and addresses me with respect," he said.

"We acknowledge whatever good PM Narendra Modi has done, and whatever is good should be accepted as good," he added.

Interestingly, Dinsha Patel is the Congress leader who fought an electoral battle against PM Modi in the 2007 Assembly elections when he was the Gujarat Chief Minister. He was pitted against PM Modi from the Maninagar constituency but lost the elections by more than 86,000 votes.

The octogenarian leader was a Union Minister in the Congress-led UPA governments a couple of times and also served as Cabinet Minister in UPA-II.

Dinsha Patel further admitted that it was a 'mistake' on Congress' part to not acknowledge and admire the contributions of Vallabhbhai Patel in upholding India's integrity, as has been done by the BJP.

He also took strong objections to Rahul Gandhi's claims, where the latter said that a large chunk of party workers in the Gujarat Congress were working as the 'B-team' of the BJP and called for purging the party of 'unwanted elements'.

"I do not agree with him because representatives from both parties are connected and associated with each other for many social welfare works. For projects like opening a dairy outlet or a bank, they collaborate their efforts towards this," Mr Patel said, rejecting Rahul Gandhi's charge.

Punjab Leader Seen Scaling Gate To Evade Shooters, Was Killed Minutes Later

A Shiv Sena leader was chased and shot dead by the three bike-borne men in Punjab's Moga late Thursday night. A chilling CCTV video shows how he tried to evade the shooters just minutes before he was killed.

Mangat Rai alias Manga, who was the Moga district president of Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, had stepped out of his house on a scooter to buy milk when he was attacked. He dodged several bullets fired at him before ultimately being killed.

The first shot was fired around 10 pm, but it missed him and hit an 11-year-old boy who was crossing the area. Manga immediately fled the area on a two-wheeler.

In the CCTV footage, the Shiv Sena leader was seen trying to climb a locked gate to elude his attackers. The men, however, find him, and one of them fires at him, but the bullet misses him. He was then fired at by another man. The next frame shows the men appearing to flee the scene when they spot an approaching car. Rai was also seen running away. This time, however, the attackers gain on him and shoot him dead.

The attackers, in a video shared on Instagram, have claimed responsibility for the murder. They alleged they were upset with Mangat Rai because he used to threaten them and extort money.

The police, meanwhile, have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against six suspects.

"It is a case of personal rivalry. An FIR for murder has been registered against six suspects named by the family of the victim. They will be arrested soon," said Senior Superintendent of Police Ajay Gandhi.

Some outfits and family members of the victim blocked the Ferozepur National Highway, demanding the arrest of the accused. Slogans were raised against the AAP government, alleging a complete breakdown of the law and order situation in Punjab.

The agitators said the protest would continue until the culprits were arrested and the family was given a government job and financial assistance and that until then, Mangat Rai's last rites would not be performed.

Earlier, Mr Rai's daughter said that her father eft the house at around 8 pm on Thursday to get milk. "At 11 pm, someone informed us that my father was shot dead. We want justice and will do whatever we have to do for that," she said.

In another incident on the same night, three motorcycle riders entered a salon in Bagiana Basti around 9 pm on Thursday for a haircut and fired two shots at the owner, Devender Kumar. One bullet hit Kumar in the leg, and he was taken to Moga Civil Hospital for treatment and later referred to another hospital, police said.

Mangat Rai's shooters claimed this attack as well saying Kumar was targetted due to personal rivalry.

Manipur's 5-Day Yaoshang (Holi) Begins, Celebrations Muted This Year Too

Manipur's Meitei community began their five-day celebration of Yaoshang, or Holi as it is known in the state, with the burning of straw huts built at the Shri Govindaji temple complex and a few other areas. Yaoshang is one of the biggest festivals of Manipur's Meitei community.

Due to the ethnic hostilities, the festival of colours has been restricted to religious and community sports activities associated with the carnival.

A gathering of people marked the occasion in the Mantripukhri area, where festivities kicked off with traditional rituals and music. Due to law and order issues, no amusement and entertainment events, including cultural dances, were not organised by civil society groups.

A Meitei priest said besides the ethnic violence, thousands of people displaced from their homes and villages and staying in relief camps since May 2023 are unable to organise festival-related events.

Manipur is famous for its varied sports and cultural activities. Holi here is not celebrated only by playing with colours, but by organising sporting events across the state.

During Manipur's unique Holi (Yaoshang), local clubs and communities organise sports meets in different parts of the state, setting the stage for an action-packed and joyful festival. But all these are being done in a low key due to the circumstances.

The sports meet feature a wide range of games including full marathons, half marathons, athletics, football matches, and indoor games.

Participants range from young children to senior citizens, creating a lively and competitive atmosphere. During Yaoshang, children walk from door-to-door in their neighbourhood, give blessings to adults, and in return, they receive money.

Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh also made his first public appearance after his resignation on February 9 to greet people on Yaoshang.

"Heartiest greetings to the people of Manipur on the joyous occasion of Yaoshang. This festival of colours and harmony symbolises unity, joy, and the rich cultural heritage of our state. May the celebrations bring happiness, good health, and prosperity to all. Wishing everyone a safe and blessed Yaoshang," he said in a post on X.

Mr Singh took part in the celebrations, lighting the traditional Holi pyre, a significant event that symbolises the onset of the festival in the state.

Tejashwi Yadav Calls Nitish Kumar 'Unfit' To Govern, Demands Resignation

Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, demanding his immediate resignation over alleged insulting behaviour towards women and erratic actions in the Bihar Assembly and Council.

"We now feel pity for Nitish Kumar. His repeated speeches and actions in the House clearly show he is not normal. For the sake of Bihar, he should resign on his own," the RJD leader said.

"We even pray for his health, as his behaviour raises serious concerns. He is unconscious and it is hard to understand how he is running the government," Mr Yadav stated.

He accused Nitish Kumar of insulting women. "He continuously makes inappropriate gestures in the House. We are getting the video footage from the Assembly to prove it. He even pointed towards a woman leader of his own party some time ago," he alleged.

"He should resign and open an ashram to take rest," Mr Yadav said.

The Bihar Legislative Council witnessed high drama on Wednesday as former Chief Minister Rabri Devi, along with opposition leaders, staged a walkout and protest against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Soon after, Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav joined the protest and launched a scathing attack on Nitish Kumar, demanding his resignation.

Reacting to Nitish Kumar's claim that he removed Tejashwi Yadav from the post of Deputy Chief Minister, he stated, "He (Nitish Kumar) repeatedly says he removed people, but the truth is, he himself resigned. He keeps attacking my father, Lalu Prasad Yadav, but Lalu Prasad was an MP and MLA long before Nitish even entered politics. I have also made Nitish sit on the CM's chair twice."

On the ongoing political discourse about Holi and Ramzan celebrations, Tejashwi took a unifying stance: "Everyone should celebrate their festivals together, and no one should have any problem with it."

The JD(U) is yet to officially respond, but party insiders call the opposition's protest a desperate election gimmick. The RJD and its allies are pushing the narrative that Nitish Kumar is incapable of governing Bihar any longer.

All About Baloch Liberation Army Rebels Behind Train Hijacking In Pakistan

Separatist militant group the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) claimed that they had taken hostages during an attack on a train carrying hundreds of people, including paramilitary troops, in southwestern Pakistan on Tuesday and threatened to kill them.

The BLA is the strongest of a number of insurgent groups long operating in the area bordering Afghanistan and Iran, a mineral-rich region that is home to Beijing's investment in Gwadar deep water port and other projects.

In what was previously a low-level insurgency, the militants have in recent months stepped up their activities using new tactics to inflict high death and injury tolls and target Pakistan's military.

Here are facts about the group, which has also targeted Chinese interests.

WHAT ARE THE BLA'S GOALS?

The BLA seeks independence for Balochistan, a province located in Pakistan's southwest and bordering Afghanistan to the north and Iran to the west.

It is the biggest of several ethnic insurgent groups that have battled the federal government for decades, saying it unfairly exploits Balochistan's rich gas and mineral resources.

The insurgents have been fighting to lay a claim to local resources which they say belong to their people.

Balochistan's mountainous border region serves as a safe haven and training ground for the Baloch insurgents and Islamist militants.

HOW HAS IT BECOME MORE LETHAL?

The BLA shocked the country's security establishment when it barged into army and navy bases in 2022.

It has deployed women suicide bombers, including in an attack on Chinese nationals at a university in Karachi and a bombing in southwest Balochistan.

An umbrella group of several Baloch ethnic groups said last week that it had convened all factions in a bid to unite them under a unified military structure.

A dormant BLA splinter group called BLA (AZAD) became active in recent weeks.

WHAT ARE THE BLA'S TARGETS?

The BLA often targets infrastructure and security forces in Balochistan, but has also truck in other areas - most notably the southern port city of Karachi.

The insurgents target Pakistan's army and Chinese interests, in particular the strategic port of Gwadar on the Arabian Sea, accusing Beijing of helping Islamabad to exploit the province.

Militants have killed Chinese citizens working in the region and attacked Beijing's consulate in Karachi.

The BLA, separately, was also at the centre of tit-for-tat strikes last year between Iran and Pakistan over what they called militant bases on each other's territory, which brought the neighbours close to war.

BALOCHISTAN'S SIGNIFICANCE

Balochistan is an important part of China's $65 billion investment in the China Pakistan Economic Corridor, a wing of President Xi Jinping's Belt and Road initiative.

It is home to key mining projects, including Reko Diq, run by mining giant Barrick Gold (ABX.TO), and believed to be one of the world's largest gold and copper mines.

China also operates a gold and copper mine in the province.

The decades-old insurgency has continued to keep the province of some 15 million people unstable and created security concerns around Pakistan's plans to access untapped resources.

It is Pakistan's largest province by area, but smallest by population. Balochistan also has a long Arabian Sea coastline, not far from the Gulf's Strait of Hormuz oil shipping lane.

Hundreds of Baloch activists, many of them women, have protested in Islamabad and Balochistan over alleged abuses by security forces - accusations the government denies.

Islamabad accuses India and Afghanistan of backing the militants to damage Pakistan's relations with China, a charge both countries deny.

Alpha Tocol Delivers 1st Rear Fuselage For Aircraft Mk1A To Hindustan Aeronautics

Private firm Alpha Tocol Engineering Services on Sunday handed over the first rear fuselage for Light Combat Aircraft Mk1A to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the Defence Ministry said.

The rear fuselage was handed over at the HAL's Aircraft Division in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, according to a Defence Ministry statement.

Speaking on the occasion, Singh termed the handing over as a milestone in the historic journey of India's defence manufacturing.

"The ceremony is a testimony to India's progress towards Aatmanirbharta in defence and the Government's commitment towards enhanced public-private partnership," he said.

The defence minister commended HAL and the private sector for constantly strengthening the Armed Forces with latest platforms and technologies.

He stated that the HAL, through its integrated model and strategies, is not only bolstering the strength of soldiers, but is also opening new dimensions of manufacturing and Research and Development (R&D) by collaborating with the private sector.

The statement said a fuselage is the main body section of the aircraft which holds the pilot, passengers and cargo, while the rear fuselage supports the tail section and its associated components.

Singh described HAL as the fuselage of the country's defence and aerospace sector, with private companies such as L&T, Alpha Tocol, Tata Advanced Systems and VEM Technologies playing the role of rear fuselage, supporting HAL.

"Together with these Indian components, the aircraft which is being manufactured in our defence and aerospace sector will reach greater heights in the times to come," he said.

The minister credited the bravery and dedication of the air warriors as well as the equipment being manufactured by Indian public and private sectors for the growing strength of the Indian Air Force (IAF).

"While our courageous air warriors have made an invaluable contribution, the equipment being manufactured indigenously is providing them the added strength, with which they protect our borders," he said.

Singh exuded confidence that HAL and the private sector will continue to overcome every challenge and bolster the Armed Forces in every way.

The statement said the HAL had placed orders on various Indian private companies such as L&T, Alpha Tocol Engineering Services, Tata Advanced Systems Ltd (TASL), VEM Technologies and Lakshmi Mission Works (LMW) for supplying major modules for the 83 LCA Mk1A contract.

HAL has already manufactured 12 LCA MK1A rear fuselages, which are on the aircraft in the manufacturing line. With this supply, a major structure module produced by an Indian private partner will be integrated into the LCA Mk1A aircraft, enabling HAL to meet additional delivery commitments for IAF from 2025-26 onwards.

Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal A P Singh, MP Dr Sudhanshu Trivedi, Chief Managing Director (CMD) of HAL D K Sunil, Chief Executive Officer and Director, Alpha Tocol Engineering Services, Wing Commander Baran Sen (Retd), CMD, VEM Technologies V Venkataraju, Senior VP, Larsen & Toubro, Arun T Ramchandani, were present along with other dignitaries.
