On CCTV, Cops Seen Planting Drugs On Man In Mumbai, Suspended After Probe

Four cops were suspended today in Mumbai, police said, after a video showed them allegedly planting drugs on a man went viral on social media. In the video, two officers can be seen frisking a man as two others can be seen standing a few steps away.

Moments later, one of the them slips something into the suspect's hip pocket, the video shows. The four men then take him into custody for possessing 20 grams of mephedrone.

After an investigation was launched, it was confirmed that all the four men seen in the video are police personnel posted at Khar Police Station in Mumbai.

Those suspended included a police sub-inspector and three constables, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone XI) Rajtilak Roshan told news agency PTI.

According to sources, the man searched by the officers and in whose pocket the drugs were planted was identified as Daniel. The four policemen, attached to the Anti-Terror Cell of the Khar police station, raided an open plot of land in Kalina area of the city on Friday evening and detained him.

While speaking to a local news channel, Daniel claimed that the cops initially threatened to frame him in a drugs case but when they realised that their act was caught on a CCTV camera, he was allowed to go.

DCP Rajtilak Roshan told news agency PTI that disciplinary action was initiated against the four cops for not following set procedure and after their suspected actions were seen in the video, they were suspended pending inquiry.

"They reached the spot after getting information about drugs, but everything (they did) is seen in the CCTV," he said.

An associate of Daniel alleged that he was targeted at the behest of a builder over a dispute regarding the plot where the incident took place.

Cheers Or Tears? How Beer And Cider Could Trigger Gout, Says New Research

A recent study has found that certain alcoholic beverages may increase the risk of developing gout, a painful form of arthritis. The research, conducted by a team from China, analyzed the drinking habits of over 400,000 people in the UK.

According to the study, men who consume alcohol at least five times a week have twice the risk of developing gout compared to those who drink less than once a week. For women, the study indicates that more frequent alcohol consumption is associated with a moderately elevated risk of gout. The findings were published on Wednesday in the medical journal JAMA Network Open.

According to the study, higher consumption of several specific alcoholic beverages was associated with a higher risk of gout among both sexes. The sex-specific associations for total alcohol consumption may be associated with differences between men and women in the types of alcohol consumed.

"There are quite a few risk factors for gout. Some risk factors are genetic. There are some people who have high uric acid, and despite whatever they do, they have a higher risk for gout," Dr. Diane Horowitz, director of the Northwell Health Rheumatoid Arthritis Center, explained to The New York Post.

"Men have a higher risk for gout than women do. Women who are postmenopausal have a higher risk than women who are premenopausal," added Horowitz, who was not involved in the new research. "Certain dietary factors and alcohol consumption and genetics and gender are all associated with gout."

What is Gout?

According to NIH, Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis that causes pain and swelling in your joints, usually as flares that last for a week or two, and then resolve. Gout flares often begin in your big toe or a lower limb. Gout happens when high levels of urate build up in your body over a long period of time, which can then form needle-shaped crystals in and around the joint. This leads to inflammation and arthritis of the joint. When the body makes too much urate, or removes too little, urate levels build up in the body. However, many people with high levels of serum urate will not develop gout.

Boy Shatters 3,500-Year-Old Bronze Age Jar At Israel Museum

A four year old boy accidentally shattered a rare bronze age jar that was on display at an archaeological museum in Haifa, Israel.

The 3,500-year-old ancient artefact had been on display near the entrance of the Hecht Museum without a glass case.

The child's father told the BBC his son "pulled the jar slightly" because he was "curious about what was inside". The man added that he was "in shock" to see his son beside the broken pieces and thought "it wasn't my child that did it".

"Despite the rare incident" the museum said it intends to continue displaying items "without barriers or glass walls" as it believes there is a "special charm" in showing archaeological finds "without obstructions".

"There are instances where display items are intentionally damaged, and such cases are treated with great severity, including involving the police," Lihi Laszlo from the museum told the BBC.

"In this case, however, this was not the situation. The jar was accidentally damaged by a young child visiting the museum, and the response will be accordingly."

The jar, which the museum believes dates between 2200 and 1500 BC, was most likely intended to be used to carry local supplies such as wine and olive oil. It was discovered during excavations in Samaria, in central Israel, and has been in the museum for 35 years.

The museum said the artefact was "an impressive find" because similar archaeological items unearthed during excavations are usually broken or incomplete.

An expert has been appointed to restore the jar and it will be displayed again "in a short time", the museum said.

The boy's father said they feel "relieved" to know the jar will be restored but they were apologetic as "it will no longer be the same item".

However, the museum's head Inbal Rivlin told Israeli news outlet Ynet that the boy and his mother have been invited back to the museum for a private tour.

"The museum is not a mausoleum but a living place, open to families (and) accessible. We are appealing to parents: Don't be afraid. Things like this happen. We will fix (the jar) and put it back," the museum head told Ynet.

Maldives Police Investigate Alleged Coup Plot To Overthrow Government

Police in the Maldives are investigating an alleged attempt to topple President Mohamed Muizzu by stirring anger over the Indian Ocean archipelago's worsening financial conditions.

Last week, the main commercial bank in the upmarket tourist destination drastically reduced the foreign exchange spending allowed for Maldivians, sparking widespread anger.

Muizzu has slammed the move as an "illegal attempt" to overthrow his government, by making him unpopular and encouraging street protests.

"An investigation has been launched into the alleged coup attempt," the police said in a statement late Monday.

There have been no demonstrations in the capital Male, but scathing criticism of the government has erupted online.

"Hundreds of 'bot' accounts have been used on social media to encourage people to take to the streets to overthrow the government and incite public unrest," police said.

The bank said the changes, which they have since rescinded, came "in response to the escalating usage of foreign currency spent on cards and the static sale of foreign currency to the Bank".

The international credit rating agency Fitch downgraded the Maldives in June and warned it could be headed for a sovereign default after its foreign currency reserves dropped to $492 million in May.

The downgrade came weeks after the IMF warned the Maldives against a looming "debt distress", as the small but strategically placed country eyes further borrowing from main creditor China.

Pivot to China

Official data showed the Maldives' foreign debt reaching $4.038 billion last year, about 118 percent of gross domestic product, an increase of nearly $250 million from 2022.

Fitch had noted the government's debt servicing obligations, amounting to $409 million this year, would add to severe stress.

The crisis escalated over the weekend, when the Bank of Maldives Limited (BML) stopped debit card transactions and allowed a maximum monthly credit card spend of $100 for online transactions.

Maldivians use their cards to pay for tuition and medical treatment abroad apart from online purchases.

Muizzu told supporters late Monday the bank decision was a plot to discredit him, and accused some BML directors of being loyal to the former government.

"There is room to believe that this (cap on spending) was an illegal attempt to overthrow a legitimate government," Muizzu said.

The bank on Sunday raised forex spending limits after the Maldives Monetary Authority intervened.

Political parties have called on the government to tax hotels in foreign currency.

Since winning office last year, Muizzu has reoriented his nation from traditional benefactor India and towards China.

As of June 2023, the Export-Import Bank of China owned 25.2 percent of the Maldives' external debt and was the country's biggest single lender, Male's finance ministry figures showed.

Telegram Boss To Stay In French Custody As Russia Alleges US Interference

Telegram boss Pavel Durov could be held in police custody until Wednesday after French prosecutors said they had granted extra time for questioning, while a senior ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin alleged Washington was behind his arrest.

Durov, a Russian-born billionaire, was arrested in France over the weekend as part of an investigation into crimes related to images of child sex abuse, drug trafficking and fraudulent transactions on the platform, French prosecutors said on Monday.

On Tuesday, a spokesperson for the public prosecutor said Durov's detention had been extended by up to 48 hours late on Monday.

The messaging platform, which analysts have described as a virtual battlefield, has been heavily used by both sides of the war in Ukraine and war-related news and propaganda channels around the globe.

Without providing evidence, Vyacheslav Volodin, the chairman of Russia's State Duma, the lower house of parliament, said the United States, through France, was attempting to exert control over Telegram.

"Telegram is one of the few and at the same time the largest Internet platform over which the United States has no influence," Volodin said in a post.

"On the eve of the U.S. presidential election, it is important for (President Joe) Biden to take Telegram under control."

The White House did not immediately comment on Durov's arrest.

With nearly 1 billion users, Telegram, which presents itself as a haven for free speech and political dissidents, is particularly prominent in Russia, Ukraine and the republics of the former Soviet Union.

While millions of ordinary users like the app for its easy use and range of functions, it is also widely used by far-right, anti-vax and conspiracist movements.

French President Emmanuel Macron, who is known to be an avid user of the app, has said that the arrest was "in no way a political decision".

After Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Telegram has become the main source of unfiltered - and sometimes graphic and misleading - content from both sides about the war and the politics surrounding the conflict.

13-Year-Old Schoolgirl Kidnapped, Gang-Raped In Maharashtra, 3 Arrested: Cops

In a shocking incident, a 13-year-old schoolgirl was allegedly kidnapped and repeatedly gang-raped by three people in Risod town in Maharashtra's Washim district, officials said on Monday.

The alleged crime took place on August 20 and the Risod Police lodged an FIR the following day after the girl returned home and informed her parents about her ordeal.

After recording her statement, the police took the girl for a medical examination which confirmed the atrocities committed on her.

The police immediately launched a man-hunt for the accused trio and arrested them last Thursday (August 22).

Washim Superintendent of Police Anul Tare told IANS that based on the minor girl's statement and medical reports, the police have arrested the three accused for the heinous crime.

They have been charged under the relevant sections of the law dealing with kidnap, rape, and other crimes, Mr Tare added.

The accused have been identified as Pandhari Phupate, Suryabhan Phupate, and Ganesh Phupate -- they are not related to each other -- aged between 23 and 25 years.

As per the girl's police statement, on the evening of August 20, she was playing outside her home in the Mungsaji Nagar area of the city when the Phupate trio accosted her.

The trio allegedly took her to a small shanty in a deserted hilly area near Mungsaji Nagar where they took turns to repeatedly violate her throughout the night.

The next day, they allowed her to go and after she reached home and narrated her ordeal, the family lodged a police complaint.

The three accused were produced before a court in Washim which remanded them to judicial remand, Tare added.

In view of the sensitive nature of the case, the Washim Police have appealed to the locals to report any suspicious activity to the police for prompt action.

The Washim case follows a string of incidents against minor girls that have rocked the state in the past fortnight, including the sexual assault on two four-year-old girls by a sanitation worker at a private school in Badlapur in Thane district.

Under fire from the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi, the MahaYuti government has initiated a series of measures to prevent similar gruesome crimes from occurring in the future.

Minor's Rapist, Now Survivor's Husband, Sentenced To 20-Year Jail

A POCSO court in Bundi on Friday convicted a man for raping a minor although he married her when she attained adulthood.

The couple now has a one-year-old child. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 80,000 and ordered the convict to pay Rs 4 lakh for the survivor's livelihood for the time he stays in jail and completes his term.

POCSO Court I of Bundi city convicted Shetan Meena (24), a resident of Mal Ki Jhopndiyan in Lakheri police station in Bundi district, to 20 years imprisonment for kidnapping and raping a 17-year-old girl in June 2022, public prosecutor at POCSO Court I, Rakesh Thakur, said.

The father of the minor survivor lodged a missing report in Lakheri police station on June 2, 2022. He suspected Shetan to be the accused in the matter.

Following this, the police carried out a search operation and rescued the minor girl after around a month. They arrested Shetan who was later released on bail, the public prosecutor said.

Shetan married the survivor in Gurugram a year after the crime in 2023 when she became an adult. The couple now has a child.

However, the court took note of the under-aged status of the girl and held Shetan guilty of abduction and repeated rape under the relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) Act, 2012.

The court awarded 20 years of imprisonment to Shetan. It also imposed a fine of Rs 80,000 upon the convict and ordered him to pay Rs 4 lakh to the survivor for her livelihood for the time his term completes in jail, he added.

Statements of 12 witnesses were recorded during the trial and 29 documents were produced before the court, Mr Thakur added.

Top Employee Of This Bank Accused Of Sexual Harassment, Court Issues Notice

The Delhi High Court on Thursday issued a notice regarding a public interest litigation (PIL) challenging the appointment of Pankaj Dwivedi as the Executive Director of Union Bank of India.

The PIL, filed by a woman who has accused Pankaj Dwivedi of sexual harassment, questions his appointment, which was made on March 27 for a three-year term.

The notice was issued by a division bench consisting of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela.

Advocate Prashant Bhushan, representing the woman, argued that Pankaj Dwivedi's appointment as Executive Director of Union Bank of India violated regulations due to the lack of vigilance clearance.

He emphasised that this contravenes the appointment norms for public sector undertakings like banks. Mr Bhushan also noted that a chargesheet had been filed against Pankaj Dwivedi in a sexual harassment case.

It was also argued by the petitioner that Pankaj Dwivedi was previously a General Manager at Punjab & Sind Bank before joining Union Bank of India. In 2020, the Supreme Court annulled the transfer of the woman who filed the plea against Pankaj Dwivedi. She had reported irregularities and corruption involving Pankaj Dwivedi at her branch and alleged that he sexually harassed her in 2018.

The woman had raised concerns about account maintenance for liquor contractors and corruption allegations against Pankaj Dwivedi.

PM Modi Arrives In Warsaw, 1st Visit By Indian Prime Minister In 45 Years

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Poland - the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in 45 years. PM Modi landed in Warsaw this evening on the first leg of his two-nation visit during which he will also travel to Ukraine's capital Kyiv.

Morarji Desai was the last Prime Minister to visit Poland in 1979.

PM Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome in Warsaw. He also received a warm welcome from the members of the Indian community amid "Modi, Modi" chants. The Prime Minister waved to the gathering and also shook hands with some of those present.

He also visited a memorial in Warsaw commemorating the time in the 1940s, during World War II, when more than 6,000 Polish women and children found refuge in two princely states in India, Jamnagar and Kolhapur.

The Prime Minister is expected to meet President Andrzej Sebastian Duda and hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Donald Tusk. He will also address the members of the Indian community - estimated at around 25,000 - select Polish business leaders and prominent Indologists.

PM Modi has met his Polish counterpart on four occasions in the latter's earlier capacity as the President of the European Council. He also had a telephonic conversation with President Duda in March 2022, thanking him for the assistance provided by Poland in the evacuation of Indian citizens from Ukraine and for the special gesture of relaxing visa requirements for Indian citizens crossing over to Poland from the conflict zone. More than 4000 Indian students were evacuated via Poland in 2022.

"My visit to Poland comes as we mark 70 years of our diplomatic relations. Poland is a key economic partner in Central Europe," he said in his departure statement earlier today.

While announcing PM Modi's visit to Poland and Ukraine, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday said, "Our bilateral trade is substantial. And it's of the order of US$6 billion, which makes Poland India's largest trading partner in Central and Eastern Europe. Indian investments in Poland are estimated at around US$3 billion. And the Polish investments into India are around US$1 billion."

"Many Indian companies have an active business presence in Poland. And they are engaged in a range of sectors, from IT to pharmaceuticals to manufacturing to farm vehicles to electronics, steel, metals and chemicals. Nearly 30 Polish companies have a business presence in India. And some of them have manufacturing units. There are direct flights between India and Poland, which commenced in 2019. And this, in a way, is helping the economic and commercial linkages," said MEA Secretary Tanmaya Lal.

The Prime Minister will visit Kyiv on August 23 and hold talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky.

How Ukraine War Has Turned Ex Google CEO Into "Licensed Arms Dealer"

Former Chief Executive Officer of Google, Eric Schmidt, has said that the Ukraine war has turned him into a licensed arms dealer, a career path he "doesn't recommend". Mr Schmidt's new venture aims to  converge AI and defense technology to help Ukraine fight in the ongoing war against Russia.

Mr Schmidt reportedly delivered a lecture in Stanford University in April where he talked about how Russian atrocities in Ukraine affected him. "Watching the Russians use tanks to destroy apartment buildings with little old ladies and kids just drove me crazy," he said.

Mr Schmidt, who was Google's CEO from 2001 to 2011, along with Sebastian Thrun, CEO of Udacity, is working on a new start up called White Stork. "The idea basically is to do two things- use AI in complicated, powerful ways for these essentially robotic wars and the second one is to lower the cost of robots," he said.

The lecture Mr Schmidt delivered at Stanford in April was posted by the university on its YouTube last week, according to a report in Business Insider. The lecture quickly went viral, however, it was later taken down.

In the lecture, Mr Schmidt reportedly informed that White Stork will mass-produce drones equipped with Artificial Intelligence to identify targets to eliminate the need for ground battles with tanks, artillery and mortar.

In a clip of the lecture, now in wide circulation on X, formerly twitter, Mr Schmidt says, "The whole theory of armies is tanks, artilleries and mortar and we can eliminate all of them, and we can make the penalty for invading a country, at least by land, essentially be impossible."

Mr Schmidt said that he is now a licensed arms dealer "because of the way the system works". "A computer scientist, businessman, arms dealer. I do not recommend this in your career path, I'd stick with AI," he said.

"Because of the way the laws work, we're doing this privately and this is all legal with the support of the government, so it goes straight into Ukraine and then they fight the war," he added.

The Russia-Ukraine war, which started in February 2022, has been going on for almost two and a half years now.

In the latest development, Ukrainian forces struck a third bridge in an attack on Russia's Kursk region. According to Ukraine, the ongoing offensive in the Kursk region is aimed at creating a "buffer zone" and to bring war closer to an end.

Ukraine's ongoing offensive in Kursk is said to be the biggest attack on Russia since World War II.

UN Calls For Brief Gaza Truces To Vaccinate Children Against Polio

UN agencies on Friday called for two seven-day breaks in the fighting in Gaza to vaccinate more than 640,000 children against polio, which has been detected in the wastewater.

The UN's health and children's agencies said they had drawn up detailed plans to reach children across the besieged Palestinian territory, starting later this month.

But that would require pauses in the fighting between Israel and Hamas, the World Health Organization and UNICEF said.

They said they were planning two rounds of a vaccination campaign across the Gaza Strip, starting in late August, against type 2 poliovirus (cVDPV2).

Last month, it was announced that type 2 poliovirus had been detected in environmental surveillance samples collected in Gaza on June 23.

"WHO and UNICEF request all parties to the conflict to implement humanitarian pauses in the Gaza Strip for seven days to allow for two rounds of vaccination campaigns to take place," they said.

A WHO spokeswoman said they were asking for seven days during each round.

"These pauses in fighting would allow children and families to safely reach health facilities and community outreach workers to get to children who cannot access health facilities for polio vaccination," the statement said.

"Without the humanitarian pauses, the delivery of the campaign will not be possible."

"The Gaza Strip has been polio-free for the last 25 years," said the WHO and UNICEF.

"Its re-emergence, which the humanitarian community has warned about for the last 10 months, represents yet another threat to the children in the Gaza Strip and neighbouring countries.

"A ceasefire is the only way to ensure public health security in the Gaza Strip and the region."

During each round of the campaign, the health ministry in Gaza, alongside UN agencies, would provide "two drops of novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) to more than 640,000 children under 10 years of age".

More than 1.6 million doses of nOPV2 were expected to transit through Israel's Ben Gurion Airport "by the end of August", the statement added.

Poliovirus, most often spread through sewage and contaminated water, is highly infectious. It can cause deformities and paralysis, and is potentially fatal. It mainly affects children under the age of five.

Hamas's unprecedented October 7 attack on Israel triggered the war that resulted in the deaths of 1,198 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

On Thursday the toll from Israel's retaliatory military campaign in Gaza passed 40,000, according to the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza, which does not provide a breakdown of civilian and militant casualties.

ISRO To Launch Earth Observation Satellite Tomorrow

The countdown for the launch of India's small rocket -- Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) -- carrying earth observation satellite (EOS-08) and SR-0 satellite belonging to the startup Space Rickshaw will begin at around 2.30 am on Friday, senior officials said.

The countdown for this mission is very short. It will begin at 2.30 am on Friday for the launch at 9.17 am the same day, senior officials told IANS.

The mission named SSLV-D3/EOS-08 will be the third and final developmental flight for SSLV after which the rocket will get into full-fledged operational mode.

On Friday at about 9.17 am, the SSLV with a carrying capacity of 500 kg will blast off laden with the 175.5 kg microsatellite EOS-08 with a life expectancy of one year.

According to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the proposed mission will complete the SSLV Development Project and enable operational missions by the Indian industry and public sector player NewSpace India Ltd.

The SSLV rocket is capable of launching Mini, Micro or Nano satellites (10 to 500 kg mass) into a 500 km planar orbit.

The rocket's three stages are powered by solid fuel while the final Velocity Trimming Module (VTM) is powered by liquid fuel.

Just over 13 minutes after the blast off, the rocket will orbit EOS-08 and about three minutes later, the SR-0 will be separated. Both the satellites will separate from the rocket at an altitude of 475 km.

For Chennai-based space sector startup Space Rickshaw, the SR-0 will be its first satellite.

"We will be making six more satellites on a commercial basis," Srimathy Kesan, Co-Founder, Space Rickshaw, and Founder-CEO, Space Kidz India, told IANS.

Meanwhile, the primary objectives of the EOS-08 mission include designing and developing a microsatellite, creating payload instruments compatible with the microsatellite bus, and incorporating new technologies required for future operational satellites, ISRO said.

Built on the Microsat/IMS-1 bus, EOS-08 carries three payloads: Electro Optical Infrared Payload (EOIR), Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry payload (GNSS-R), and SiC UV Dosimeter.

The EOIR payload is designed to capture images in the Mid-Wave IR (MIR) and Long-Wave IR (LWIR) bands, both during day and night, for applications such as satellite-based surveillance, disaster monitoring, environmental monitoring, fire detection, volcanic activity observation, and industrial and power plant disaster monitoring.

The GNSS-R payload demonstrates the capability of using GNSS-R-based remote sensing for applications such as ocean surface wind analysis, soil moisture assessment, cryosphere studies over the Himalayan region, flood detection, and inland water body detection.

ISRO said the SiC UV Dosimeter monitors UV irradiance at the viewport of the Crew Module in the Gaganyaan Mission and serves as a high-dose alarm sensor for gamma radiation.

EOS-08 marks a significant advancement in satellite mainframe systems such as an Integrated Avionics system, known as the Communication, Baseband, Storage, and Positioning (CBSP) Package, which combines multiple functions into a single, efficient unit.

According to ISRO, the satellite employs a miniaturised design in its Antenna Pointing Mechanisms, capable of achieving a rotational speed of 6 degrees per second and maintaining a pointing accuracy of ±1 degree.

Israel Confirms Its Delegation To Attend Gaza Truce Talks In Doha

Israel's spy chiefs will attend talks in Doha on Thursday seeking a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal after more than 10 months of war, the prime minister's office said on Wednesday.

"Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has approved the departure of the Israeli delegation to Doha tomorrow, as well as the mandate for conducting the negotiations," a statement said.

The head of Israel's Mossad spy agency, David Barnea, and Shin Bet security service chief Ronen Bar are part of the team, Netanyahu's spokesman Omer Dostri told AFP.

"The head of the Mossad, the head of the Shin Bet, Nitzan Alon and Ophir Falk" make up the team, Dostri said. Alon coordinates issues related to hostages, and Falk is a political adviser to Netanyahu.

Palestinian militant group Hamas has not said whether it would send negotiators to Doha.

A Hamas official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP that "negotiations with the mediators are continuing and have even intensified in recent hours".

"Hamas wants the Biden plan imposed and doesn't want to negotiate just to negotiate," the official said, referring a ceasefire proposal laid out in late May by US President Joe Biden.

"We have to force the (Israeli) occupation government to stop its policy, which consists of dragging out the negotiations, and force it to stop massacring our people."

Newborn Twins Killed In Gaza While Father Picked Up Birth Certificates

Mohammed Abu Al-Qumsan had just picked up birth certificates for his newly-born twins when he found out they had been killed, along with his wife and her mother, by an Israeli strike on the Gaza apartment where they were sheltering.

He waved the laminated documents, supposed to signify rare joy in the besieged Palestinian enclave, as a man held him while he wept at the morgue where their bodies were brought.

"My wife is gone, my two babies and my mother-in-law. I was told it's a tank shell on the apartment they were in, in a house we were displaced to," said Abu Al-Qumsan, 31, recalling the devastating phone call from people in the neighbourhood.

He and others carried his boy and girl, Asser and Ayssel, who were wrapped in white shrouds - a common sight in Gaza, where Israel's land and air campaign has put hundreds of thousands of people regularly on the move in search of shelter.

A man prayed as the bodies were placed in the back of a car and a crowd gathered and people looked on from the balcony of one of Gaza's overwhelmed emergency rooms, at the Al-Aqsa Maryrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah in the centre of the coastal strip.

Ten months after the Gaza war erupted, air strikes, artillery shells and severe shortages of medicine, food and clean water have brought one of the world's most densely populated places to its knees.

"Today, it was registered in history that the occupation army targets newborn children who are barely four days old, twins along with their mother and grandmother," hospital doctor Khalil al-Daqran said.

Israel says it goes to great lengths to avoid civilian casualties and accuses arch-foe Hamas of using human shields, charges the militants deny.

The Palestinian Iranian-backed militant group started the conflict in an Oct. 7 cross-border raid on Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking over 250 hostage, according to Israeli tallies.

Israel struck back with an offensive that has killed nearly 40,000 people and wounded more than 92,000, according to Gaza health authorities, and reduced much of the enclave to rubble

Mpox Vaccine Likely Months Away As Africa Health Body Declares Emergency

Vaccines to help curb an escalating mpox outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo and neighbouring countries may still not reach the central African country for months even as the World Health Organization considers following Africa's top public health agency in declaring the outbreak an emergency.

On Tuesday, Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention declared a public health emergency of continental concern for the first time ever, and on Wednesday, a WHO-led panel meets to decide if it represents a global threat.

But while experts hoped the meetings would galvanise action worldwide, many obstacles remain, including limited vaccine supply, funding and competing disease outbreaks.

"It is important to declare an emergency because the disease is spreading," said Jean-Jacques Muyembe-Tamfum, head of Congo's Institut National pour la Recherche Biomedicale (INRB). He said he hoped any declaration would help provide more funding for surveillance as well as supporting access to vaccines in Congo.

But he acknowledged the road ahead was not easy in a huge country where health facilities and humanitarian funds are already stretched by conflict and outbreaks of diseases like measles and cholera.

"If the big declarations remain just words, it won't make any material difference," said Emmanuel Nakoune, an mpox expert at the Institut Pasteur de Bangui in Central African Republic.

Africa CDC said last week it had been granted $10.4 million in emergency funding from the Africa Union for its mpox response, and its director general Jean Kaseya said on Tuesday there was a clear plan to secure 3 million doses of vaccine this year, without elaborating further.

However, sources involved in planning a vaccination roll-out in Congo said only 65,000 doses were likely to be available in the short-term, and campaigns were unlikely to begin before October at the earliest.

There have been more than 15,000 suspected cases of mpox in Africa this year and 461 deaths, mainly among children in Congo, according to Africa CDC. The viral infection is usually mild but can kill, and causes flu-like symptoms and pus-filled lesions.

A new offshoot of the virus has caused outbreaks in refugee camps in the east of Congo this year, and spread to Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda and Kenya for the first time.

Ivory Coast and South Africa are also experiencing outbreaks linked to a different strain of the virus, which spread globally in 2022, largely among men who have sex with men. This outbreak prompted WHO to declare a global emergency before ending it 10 months later.

Then, two vaccines were used - Bavarian Nordic's Jynneos, and LC16, made by KM Biologics. Outside clinical trials, neither has ever been available in Congo or across Africa, where the disease has been endemic for decades. Only LC16 is approved for use in children.

Congo's regulators approved the use of the vaccines domestically in June, but the government is yet to officially request any from either the manufacturers or governments like the United States looking to make donations through the global vaccine group, Gavi.

Single US Woman, 27, Spent 20 Years Collecting Baby Clothes For Her Future Children

A 27-year-old woman is dedicating time and effort to something special for her future children. Nicole, who manages the Instagram account @VillaDeSanti, is a biomedical engineer pursuing her doctorate by day. However, it's her unique hobby, which she's recently started sharing online, that has captured even more attention than her impressive academic achievements.

"I started my baby clothes collection when I was very, very young," she told PEOPLE. "I was maybe 5 or 6 years old when I began collecting the clothes. At first, they were for my baby dolls. My mom encouraged my love for playing with dolls. It started as just that, and over the years, I created a baby clothes collection that I hope will be for my future kids."

Nicole's collection consists of "maybe 100 items total," including both boys' and girls' clothes. "I don't shop that often. Items come and go. Sometimes I'll get something and later decide not to keep it. I'll give it away or sell some things. What I show online is from what I've gathered over the years. The collection is always evolving."

The collection also evolves because Nicole enjoys customizing these clothes to suit her vision.

"Crocheting and embroidery have always been a part of my life. My grandma used to sew and do a lot of embroidery, and my mom did the same, mainly as a hobby, so it was natural for me to pick it up too," she says.

"Lately, I've been applying the skills I've honed over the years to my baby clothes collection. It's fun to explore and learn more about how to use those skills to create a wardrobe for my future kids."

While it's difficult to choose favourites, Nicole has a special appreciation for the items she customizes or, in some cases, makes herself from scratch.

"My favourite personalized items are the ones I've entirely made myself. They're the ones where I have to challenge myself to learn new techniques. There's one particular dress I've shown on my Instagram page, which has embroidered sleeves. That was very challenging. I had to redo the whole thing multiple times, but in the end, I learned so much from it," she says.

"I think that's the beauty of the process learn so much. You put so much time into it and fall in love with the process, and hopefully, fall in love with the product. I spent a lot of time on that dress and put my heart into it."

Regarding thrifting and vintage finds, she adds, "There's a story behind each piece and a reason for obtaining it or something specific that drew me to it. It's just really, really hard to choose."

Nicole recently took her collection to Instagram, hoping to connect with other collectors and build a community.

"Just recently, I started thinking, 'Maybe there are more people with the same dreams, interests, and aspirations as me.' I decided to give it a try and see what others thought and share that happiness," she says.

"It's been interesting. The reason I decided to share it was because I never really saw anyone else talking about it. My friends moved on from dolls around 12 or 13 as their lives became more online, and I never had anyone to really talk about it," Nicole continues.

"It's been really fun. Most of the comments have been very positive. There are a few negative ones, but almost anything you say in this world will get some differing opinions. But it's been very fun. I would say it's brought me a lot of happiness."

Seeing the appreciation for the items she's collected fills Nicole with joy, both for now and the future, when she'll share her outfits with her little ones.

"I really hope that my future kids feel the same love that I felt while gathering all these items for them. Not just in a material sense, but knowing how much they've been on my mind, how much I've anticipated them. I look forward to one day living this dream with them and sharing with them what it means to me."

Germany Sees Bluetongue Virus Outbreak With Over 1,800 Cases This Year

Germany has seen an explosion of cases of bluetongue virus this year, authorities said Tuesday as fears increase across Europe about the disease affecting sheep and cattle.

The country has registered 1,885 outbreaks of bluetongue virus serotype 3 (BTV-3) since the start of 2024, according to the Friedrich Loeffler Institute, Germany's top animal disease research centre.

During the whole of 2023, there were just 23 outbreaks.

"There has been a real wave since the beginning of July in farms with susceptible animals," a spokeswoman for the institute told AFP.

New cases are being added every day and the number of outbreaks could exceed 2,000 by as soon as Thursday, the spokeswoman said.

The institute was unable to provide information on mortality rates.

Bluetongue is a non-contagious, insect-borne viral disease that affects ruminants such as cows and sheep but not pigs or horses. It is difficult to control once it takes hold.

It is not a risk to humans, but in animals it causes high fevers, mouth ulcers and swollen heads.

Support for farmers in tackling the disease through vaccinations is patchy in Germany as the responsibility falls to local authorities in the country's 16 states.

The first outbreak of BTV-3 was registered in Germany on October 12, 2023, according to the institute.

Since then, other outbreaks have been concentrated in the west and centre of the country, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse and Lower Saxony states.

The government has issued an emergency order to temporarily authorise three BTV-3 vaccines, pending official authorisation from the EU.

Since October 2023, cases of bluetongue have also appeared in other countries including the Netherlands and Belgium.

The disease has also recently hit France, causing alarm among farmers.

BTV-3 is particularly deadly for sheep but can also cause a significant drop in milk production in cows, according to the German institute.

Debt-Ridden UP Businessman, Wife Jump Into Canal In Uttarakhand

A debt-ridden businessman from Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur allegedly died by suicide on Monday after jumping into Gangnahar canal along with his wife.

The couple also took a selfie together on Hathi Pul before jumping into the canal and sent it to a person who worked at their jewellery shop in Saharanpur, asking him to share it with their relatives, a police official said.

While the body of Saurabh Babbar (35) has been recovered, a search is still on to find his wife Mona Babbar who also jumped into the canal along with him, Ranipur police station incharge Vijay Singh said.

A suicide note left behind by the couple said they were putting an end to their lives as they were reeling under heavy debt and could no longer pay the interest on loans to their creditors.

A mobile phone and a purse was retrieved from the man's pocket, he said, adding that Saurabh ran a jewellery shop named Sai Jewellers in Saharanpur and was under huge debt.

The couple has two children whom they left with their maternal grandparents.

Saurabh came along with his wife here on his own motorcycle which he had bought recently.

'Spectacles Shattered, Glass In Eyes': Autopsy Report Of Kolkata Doctor

More chilling details have emerged in the rape and murder of the trainee doctor in Kolkata, with the post-mortem report indicating that the accused had hit her so hard that the glasses of her spectacles shattered, shards piercing her eyes.

The 31-year-old post-graduate trainee, who was working at the city's renowned state government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was raped and murdered inside a seminar hall in the institution and her body was found on Friday morning. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer working with the Kolkata Police, has been arrested for the crime.

The post-mortem report, which was handed over to the family of the trainee doctor by the Kolkata Police on Monday, revealed that she had suffered several injuries. Cuts were found on her hands and face.

The report states that shards of glass from the spectacles likely caused the eye injuries that were found on her body.

"Homicidal injuries are antemortem in nature with indication of sexual penetration," the report stated. This means that the wounds were inflicted on the trainee doctor while she was still alive and injuries on her private parts indicated that she was raped.

After savagely hurting and sexually assaulting her, the accused killed the trainee doctor by throttling and smothering her. The report estimates the time of death to be between 3 and 5 am on Friday.

The police have said that after the murder, Sanjoy Roy - who was not associated with the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, but frequented it - went home and slept in late. Officials told news agency PTI that he washed the clothes he was wearing to destroy evidence and that his shoes, with blood stains on them, were found during a search.

Protests

The horrific crime has sparked widespread protests and doctors in several cities, including Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata, have said all elective services will be halted till the investigation into the case is complete.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday set a deadline for the Kolkata Police to solve the case, warning that the investigation will be handed over to the CBI if other accused, if any, are not arrested by then.

"If there are more accused... and all are not arrested by Sunday... we will hand over the case to the CBI, even though their success rate is low," the chief minister said after meeting the victim's family.

The Kolkata Police had said they are certain any other culprits would be arrested in the next four to five days.

"We are in touch with family members. We will stay in touch and share progress with them. If, even after that, the family is not satisfied then whatever madam (Chief Minister Banerjee) has said will happen," Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal said.

Encounter Breaks Out Between Terrorists, Security Forces In J&K's Udhampur

An encounter broke out between terrorists and security forces in the higher reaches of Basantgarh area in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district on Sunday, officials said.

Officials told IANS that the encounter broke out after contact was re-established with a group of terrorists with whom an exchange of fire had taken place on Tuesday.

The operation started after a joint team of police and security forces received input about the presence of terrorists in the area.

There have been a series of encounters between terrorists and security forces across Jammu and Kashmir in the recent past in which many terrorists and their commanders have been gunned down. Security forces have also taken casualties.

Initially confined to Poonch and Rajouri districts, terrorist activities are now spreading across other areas of Jammu that were relatively free from such incidents until a few years ago like the Chenab valley, that was declared militancy-free, and Udhampur and Kathua.

The highly trained terrorists have been ambushing vehicles and using grenades and armour-piercing bullets, as well as M4 assault rifles.

Sources say the rising militancy and the use of sophisticated weapons by terrorists indicate a significant escalation in the threat level. The frequent attacks have sparked political criticism, calls for stronger security measures, and heightened public concern.

Analysts say that over the last couple of years, the Pir Panjal region dividing Kashmir Valley with Jammu has witnessed a surge in militancy.

The relentless anti-terror operations in Kashmir have pushed terrorists to the mountains where they hide and wait for the right moment to carry out attacks on security forces.

Analysts add that a comprehensive strategy is needed to address the increasing militancy in Jammu involving enhanced intelligence gathering and better coordination among security forces.

The series of terror attacks also goes on to highlight the urgency of reassessing and strengthening the security grid to ensure the safety and stability of the region.

HD Kumaraswamy Questions DK Shivakumar Over CCD Founder's Death

HD Kumaraswamy, Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, asked Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar who is responsible for the Cafe Coffee Day (CCD) founder VG Siddhartha's death.

“Shivakumar was given a political life by SM Krishna at a time when he was a Kotwal (rowdy). He must tell people who is responsible for the death of Siddhartha and he should present the facts before the people,” the Union Minister said while addressing the concluding ceremony of BJP-JD (S) padyatra in Mysuru.

Siddhartha was the son-in-law of former Union Minister of External Affairs SM Krishna. Mr Shivakumar's daughter is married to the son of Siddhartha.

Siddhartha died by suicide after coming under financial strain.

Mr Kumaraswamy said that Mr Shivakumar along with others used to steal the iron chambers fixed for sewerage pipes during the night and sold them to the scrap industry to make money.

He said that Mr Shivakumar often claims that under his leadership, people gave 136 seats in Assembly elections and his (Kumaraswamy) leadership JD-S got only 19 seats.

“Why did the people give you only 8 out of 28 Lok Sabha seats?” he asked.

Reacting to the charges of the Union Minister, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said that Mr Kumaraswamy “needs urgent medical treatment for mental instability”.

“Kumaraswamy knows nothing about my relationship with former Union Minister of External Affairs SM Krishna. He has gone mad. I will tell his party men and well-wishers to get him medical attention for his mental health,” the Deputy Chief Minister said.

On the allegation of usurped properties, the Deputy Chief Minister said, “Let Kumaraswamy bring anyone whose property I have forcibly taken. It is not in my blood to usurp properties by force.”

On the allegation of assuming huge wealth, the Deputy Chief Minister said, “I come from a poor farmer family. My life began when I came to NPS School in Bengaluru.”

Replying to Mr Kumaraswamy's allegation that Shivakumar ditched him when he was the Chief Minister, he said, “Let the leaders of his party tell me how I ditched him when he was the Chief Minister. He clearly needs medical treatment.”

Palestinians Evacuate Khan Yunis In Gaza To Escape Fresh Israeli Operation

Crowds fleeing Khan Yunis after an Israeli evacuation order gave way to empty streets on Friday as Palestinian residents tried to escape a new Israeli military operation in Gaza's main southern area.

"They threw leaflets at us, ordering us to evacuate", Reem Abu Hayya told AFP, referring to the flyers that Israeli forces drop from planes to order the evacuation of areas ahead of a military operation.

The Khan Yunis area had already seen evacuation orders in late July, and heavy fighting that devastated the area earlier this year.

"We don't know where we're going, and we have sick and disabled people with us. Where can we go?" Abu Hayya asked AFP as she stood on the street in front of a building reduced to a pile of rebar and broken concrete.

In a besieged territory that has been consistently bombed over the past 10 months and where supplies enter with great difficulty, people carried all they could as they fled on Thursday.

AFP journalists saw one young man carrying planks of wood loosely tied in bundles, to be used as shelter structure or fuel in the near future.

With petrol scarce, only the most fortunate drove, often with mattresses piled high on the car roof. The vast majority walked. They carried their belongings in plastic and garbage bags, on donkey-pulled carts, bikes, strollers or wheelchairs.

By dusk, streets of Khan Yunis stood completely deserted and eerily quiet, AFP journalists reported. Only the ruins of buildings damaged in earlier strikes still stood.

The flyers dropped Thursday ordered residents to leave eastern towns of Khan Yunis governorate including Al-Salqa, Al-Qarara, Bani Suheila, and neighbourhoods in the city of Khan Yunis.

"Hamas and terrorist organisations continue to launch rockets from your areas", read the flyers which echoed past orders and warned that the Israeli army "will act forcefully against these elements".

Late last month Philippe Lazzarini, who heads the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, said on social media site X that only "14 percent of areas in Gaza" were not subject to evacuation orders.

On Friday, the military said it launched a new operation in Khan Yunis following "intelligence indicating the presence of terrorists and terror infrastructure" there.

"The troops are engaging in combat both above and below-ground to eliminate terrorists in the area while locating and dismantling weaponry and terrorist infrastructure," the military said in a statement.

'We are exhausted'

The military has often returned in Gaza to areas where it had previously completed major operations against Palestinian militants, only to find them resurfacing or to act on intelligence about the location of hostages.

"Enough! For both, the Jews and Hamas! Both of them should look at the people of Gaza, have mercy on us for God's sake," Ahmed al-Najjar, angry at the war and the prospect of yet another displacement, told AFP.

War in Gaza began when Hamas Palestinian militants on October 7 attacked southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,198 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.

Israel's retaliatory military offensive has killed at least 39,699 people in Gaza, according to the health ministry of the Hamas-run territory, which does not provide details of civilian and militant deaths.

Mohammad al-Farra, from Sheikh Nasser in the east of Khan Yunis, also expressed frustration at the several displacements his family has lived through.

"We were the first to return to our home... as soon as the military operation in our area ended, to escape the heat, the displacement, and the hardship", the 46-year-old told AFP.

"Then the occupation returned to drive us out again, making us suffer the tragedy multiple times over", he said, referring to Israel.

"We are exhausted. The war must end immediately so that we can feel human again, even just a little."

Bangladeshi Students Oversee Traffic Management As Cops Go On Strike

Bangladeshi students battled police for control of the streets and won, but if their country is to embark on a new journey, someone has to clear the road ahead.

Gridlock is a fact of life in the capital Dhaka, a megacity of 20 million which relies on a corps of police wardens to clear long snarls of cars and pedal rickshaws through intersections.

With officers on strike after the resignation of ex-premier Sheikh Hasina, the students who forced her ouster have stepped up to do the job themselves.

"Our country can't remain in a standstill," Nasrin Akter Koly, 21, told AFP.

"We clashed with the police, that's why the police are not on duty," she added. "So instead of the police, our people must do the work."

Traffic control is a humdrum job at the best of times and many of Dhaka's usual wardens are known for a casual indifference to aggressive drivers zooming by out of turn.

But Koly and her classmates have brought a new enthusiasm to the vocation as they wave through cars at one of the downtown business district's busiest crossroads.

Drivers are in turn treating the volunteers with respect.

Nearly all are stopping on command and heeding polite but firm directions to fasten their seatbelts -- the kind of minor traffic infraction that would have previously been ignored.

"After a revolution, every country faces some difficulties," said Nahid Kalam Nabil, 22, while directing traffic alongside Koly.

"The students are handling the situation now, and they will keep the country safe," he added.

'Teaching the people'

More than 450 people were killed during weeks of clashes between protesters and security forces before Hasina quit and fled to India on Monday.

Protests had been largely peaceful until police attempted to violently disperse them, setting in motion the chain of events that led to the end of Hasina's iron-fisted 15-year tenure.

Dozens of police officers were killed in the unrest, according to police and hospital figures given to AFP.

After her departure, vandalism and arson attacks hit roughly 450 of the country's 600 police stations, according to the force.

Police unions declared a national strike on Tuesday "until the security" of officers was assured, and a new police chief apologised for the conduct of officers under his sacked predecessor.

Unrest has since subsided, thanks in part to students volunteering for neighbourhood watch patrols and guarding houses of worship for minority religions, which were subjected to isolated looting attacks.

"They are safeguarding the houses at night, they are safeguarding the mosques, temples and churches," Nabil said.

"They are teaching the people law and order. They are designing the country in a new way."

Many police officers began returning to work Friday with soldiers -- held in high esteem for not intervening on Hasina's side during the unrest -- standing guard.

Farida Akhter, a member of the interim government tasked with steering democratic reforms, told AFP that restoring law and order was the "first priority" of the new dispensation.

The sudden collapse of Hasina's administration left a gaping vacuum in political administration, with many civil servants staying home waiting for the dust to settle.

The city government in Dhaka has also laid low, prompting other student volunteers to take on its duties.

"With this students' protest, we have made a fascist regime fall," 20-year-old Samanjar Chowdhury Mrittika told AFP while wielding a broom to sweep up garbage from a downtown sidewalk.

"The country is not in a good condition," she added. "Someone must take responsibility."

Jharkhand BJP Leader Files Complaint Against Salman Khurshid Over Bangladesh Remarks

An executive committee member of BJP Jharkhand unit on Friday filed a complaint against former external affairs minister Salman Khurshid for allegedly making inflammatory statements about developments in neighbouring Bangladesh, police said.

Abhay Singh, who was previously in-charge of party affairs in Hazaribag district, expressed concern that the Congress leader's remarks could incite communal hatred in India and demanded action against him.

He claimed that minority Hindus in Bangladesh are being targeted by violent mobs, with reports of property being looted, burned, and damaged, and women being raped and killed following recent unrest in the country.

Mr Singh, a former East Singhbhum district committee president of the BJP, noted that such violence was unprecedented, even surpassing the atrocities witnessed during the 1971 Indo-Pak war.

He criticised Congress leaders, including Manishankar Aiyar, Sajjan Kumar, and Salman Khurshid, for allegedly inciting fears that a similar situation could occur in India while remaining silent about the violence against Hindus in Bangladesh.

He accused these leaders of ignoring the plight of Hindu victims in Bangladesh while fueling discord back home.

Mr Khurshid on Tuesday said what is happening in Bangladesh can happen in the country though "everything may look normal on the surface".

Inspector Sanjay Kumar, officer-in-charge of Sakchi police station, confirmed that a complaint against Mr Khurshid has been registered.

He added that the police are yet to obtain video evidence of Khurshid's alleged inflammatory statements and that an FIR will be filed following investigation.

IIT Madras Challenges QS World University Rankings 2025, Calls It "Disappointing And Demotivating"

In an exclusive interview with NDTV, IIT Madras Director V Kamakoti expressed disappointment and frustration with the QS World University Rankings 2025, which ranked the India's number one ranked engineering institute at 227th position globally. Despite significant efforts and achievements, IIT Madras saw only a marginal improvement from its previous ranking of 285.

Director Kamakoti termed the rankings as "thoroughly demotivating" and emphasised that the institution had expected a much better position, ideally between 150 and 200. He highlighted IIT Madras's numerous achievements, including: Running the largest sustainability school, unique sports admission program, successful startups like Hyperloop and Agnikul Space Tech that has had successful rocket launch. He also highlighted the Discovery Campus and overseas campus in Zanzibar initiatives and collaborations with the Tamil Nadu government as outreach.

Kamakoti questioned the ranking methodology, feeling that IIT Madras is being judged on criteria that don't align with its strengths and diversity. He emphasised the need to understand the ranking process better, saying, "We feel we are writing an exam out of syllabus."

IIT Bombay which ranks behind IIT Madras and stands No. 3 in India's NIRF ranking has significantly improved it's QS WORLD rankings from 149 to 118.

"Assembly Elections In J&K Scheduled For September": Union Minister G Kishan Reddy

The Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir would be held in September, Union Minister G Kishan Reddy said on Monday, urging people in the Union Territory to vote the BJP to power for maintaining the "development tempo" and rooting out terrorism.

He said the activities of Pakistan and its intelligence agency ISI have been largely curtailed in J&K after the abrogation of Article 370 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government on August 5, five years ago and warned the neighbouring country against supporting terrorism in the Union Territory.

Reddy, who is also election in-charge of the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir, was addressing 'Ekatma Mahotsav' rally organised by his party on the fifth anniversary of Article 370 abrogation at the Bana Singh Stadium here in the outskirts of Jammu. BJP national general secretary in-charge J&K Tarun Chugh and J&K BJP president Ravinder Raina were among the other prominent speakers.

"The Assembly elections will be held in September and we are sure that the people will vote the BJP to power with full majority given the changes which have been brought by the party by revoking Article 370 and extending B R Ambedkar's Constitution to Jammu and Kashmir," the minister said.

Lashing out at opposition parties, especially the Congress and the National Conference, he said they are talking about re-implementing Article 370, which has only brought "death and destruction" to Jammu and Kashmir through Pakistan-sponsored terrorism.

"People have to decide which government they want in J&K, the one which is talking about article 370 or the BJP-led government which wants to take J&K to new heights of development, peace and prosperity," he said.

Terming the abrogation of Article 370 a "proud moment" for the country and the people of J&K, he said nobody had ever thought of such a development even as the foundation for it had been laid by Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mukherjee, who laid down his life while opposing the controversial constitutional provision.

"After a long struggle, the people of J&K finally got freedom from Article 370 which led to granting of rights to the women and other deprived sections of society. A new J&K came into being where terrorism, stone-pelting, hoisting of Pakistani flags and insult to the tricolour have become history," he said.

Asking people not to vote for the Congress and the NC, Reddy said if they return to power there is possibility of revival of terrorism and separatism.

Reddy said the BJP is the only party which can ensure peace by not allowing Pakistan and its sponsored terrorists to target Indian citizens.

In an apparent reference to the recent terror activities in the Jammu region, he said, "We want to warn Pakistan that we will not allow terrorism to grow in J&K despite its continuous efforts. We will completely wipe out the menace of terrorism and protect our people...we are ready to die for the country."

"Did You Make Crores By Growing Onions?" DK Shivakumar Jabs Union Minister

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Sunday termed the opposition BJP and JD(S)' ongoing 'padayatra' against alleged Mysuru Urban Development Authority site allotment scam, seeking to corner the Congress government and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, as a march for "redemption from their sins".

He also questioned JD(S) leader and Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy about the source of his family's wealth and said he could not have made thousands of crores through farming.

"BJP-JD(S) padayatre is a "Paapa Vimochana Padayatre" (a foot march for redemption from their sins)... it is the march of the corrupt, by the corrupt and for the corrupt," Mr Shivakumar said.

Speaking at the 'Janandolana' event, a public meeting by the Congress to counter BJP-JD(S)' padayatra, he accused BJP leaders and their family, Mr Kumaraswamy and his JDS leaders and their families of indulging in corruption.

The week long 'Mysuru Chalo padayatre' by BJP and JD(S) from Bengaluru that began on Saturday is against the alleged fraudulent allotment of sites to land losers by MUDA, including Siddaramaiah's wife Parvathi.

Noting that he runs a business along with farming, Mr Shivakumar said while Mr Kumaraswamy has clearly said he is the son of the soil and does only farming. "Did he make thousands of crores of wealth just by growing potatoes and onions?" He also sought to know about Mr Kumaraswamy's elder brother H D Balakrishna Gowda, a retired KAS officer, and his family's assets.

"Kumaranna (Kumaraswamy), you can discuss my assets. Start from the first, your brother -- Balakrishna Gowda, his wife, her father and family -- in Mysuru, Srirangapatna and Bengaluru. Also their benamis. How much land is in their name, you have to answer it. A government employee, how many thousand crores is he worth?" he asked.

Averring that he hasn't yet spoken about the alleged denotification and mining scams involving Mr Kumaraswamy, the Deputy CM said, "I am yet to release your family's assets, but I will soon...." JD(S) won 136 seats under his presidency, but JD(S) secured only 19 seats inder Kumaraswamy, SMr hivakumar said.

"Now, you (Kumaraswamy) have joined your hands with the BJP to save your party. You are an expert in hit and run and you are a blackmailer... You said you will not attend the padayatra but why are you attending now. You are trying to ruin JD(S) for the sake of power."

Channapatna Assembly segment will be facing the by-polls soon. The date is yet to be announced.

The bypoll in Channapatna is necessitated, following Kumaraswamy's election to the Lok Sabha from Mandya.

Speculations are rife within the Congress circles that either Mr Shivakumar or his brother D K Suresh, a former MP, who unsuccessfully contested from Bangalore Rural Lok Sabha segment, are likely to be Congress candidate from Channapatna.

"Whoever may be the candidate in Channapatna, but your vote goes to Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar. The Congress party symbol is the real candidate. I will work for this constituency like a legislator, give me an opportunity by supporting Congress," he appealed.
