Why Demand Union Territory Now? Manipur's Ceasefire-Linked Kuki Group Explains

The demand for a Union Territory carved out of Manipur by nearly two dozen tribes known as Kukis - a term given by the British in colonial times - who are dominant in some hill areas of Manipur, is due to "necessity" after the Kukis were "ethnically cleansed out of the state capital Imphal", the spokesperson of the Kuki tribes' umbrella organisation of insurgent groups that are under a ceasefire with India told reporters in the hill district Churachandpur.

Over two dozen Kuki-Zo insurgent groups come under two umbrella organisations for the purpose of negotiations with India - the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) led by the Kuki National Army, and the United People's Front (UPF) led by the Zomi Revolutionary Army.

The KNO and the UPF representing all the others have signed the suspension of operations (SoO) agreement, under which the insurgents are to stay at designated camps and their weapons kept in locked storage, to be monitored regularly.

KNO spokesperson Seilen Haokip said the Kuki tribes have changed their demand from an autonomous territorial council within Manipur to a Union Territory after their people were "ethnically cleansed" from Imphal. He said the Kuki tribes had been asking for upgrading the autonomous district councils to an autonomous territorial council within Manipur. But that has changed now.

"A Union Territory is basically a necessity now. We have been in dialogue with the government since 2008. Our demand had been a form of self-governance expressed as an autonomous territorial council within the state of Manipur," Mr Haokip told reporters.

Thousands of people from the Meitei community have also fled from their homes in hill areas after attacks by Kuki armed groups, civil society organisations in the valley say.

"Violence Derailed Talks"

"Before the demand could be concluded by the government during the talks with us, unfortunately on May 3, 2023, as we all know, there was widespread disruption starting from the state capital Imphal, which amounted to ethnic cleansing of our people, where we are a small minority in the valley and living with our neighbours from two other communities in the state. We coexisted and for generations had been living together," Mr Haokip said.

"Accordingly, of course it was right and proper for us to seek our administrative arrangement within the state to improve quality of life. And it's constitutionally appropriate to ask for the provisions in the Constitution to be applied, so that we can uplift our people to the benefit of the entire state," the KNO spokesperson said.

"That was the aim and that was why we asked for the autonomous district council. The provisions of the autonomous district councils under Article 371C [of the Constitution], which has been in place since Manipur gained statehood in 1972... no matter how good they were, they did not filter down or played out in reality to the satisfaction of our people in terms of development and administration," Mr Haokip said.

He said elections to the autonomous district councils were not held for a long time, and whenever these bodies were working, they were felt to be highly inadequate in meeting the administrative aspirations of the people.

"Although the clause in the constitutional provision was part of the state of manipur's creation, for 50 years it fell short of people's expectations. We also found that there can be better provisions under the Constitution within the state of Manipur, and that was by way of our demand for an autonomous territorial council within Manipur," Mr Haokip said.

Autonomous Territorial Council To Union Territory

"Earlier, it was the autonomous district councils, which we wanted elevated to an autonomous territorial council for better provisions that we were aspiring for. It all happened peacefully and was in due process," he said.

Mr Haokip blamed the violence that broke out in May 2023 for derailing what he claimed was peaceful tripartite talks between the Centre, the state government, and the Kuki insurgent groups that had signed the SoO agreement.

Meitei civil society groups, however, allege the Kuki tribes under the pretext of protesting against the Meiteis' demand to be included under the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category started burning Meitei homes in the hill district Churachandpur. They say the violence in Imphal at night on May 3 was a retaliation to the attacks on Meitei villages during the day.

"The tripartite dialogue comprising the Centre, state government and the SoO groups was heading towards an amicable conclusion. But as I mentioned earlier, since we could not arrive at the agreement and settlement because of the disruption that broke out in Imphal valley on May 3, 2023, and we were ethnically cleansed out of Imphal, the capital of the state, it was very obvious by the power involved in the ethnic cleansing, we were not wanted in the land we have been part of for generations. So quite naturally we moved towards the hill districts," the KNO spokesperson alleged.

"If Refugees Were From Valley Community..."

He called the "branding" of refugees from Myanmar as "illegal immigrants" and "narco-terrorists" an attempt to show the Kukis in a bad light.

"It is quite clear they are refugees who have been chased out by the junta and are looking for shelter among their own ethnic groups. Now my question is I don't know how many valley people who are in Myanmar are affected by the junta-led violence, whether they came across the border or not, I don't know. See, there might not be any. It appears the VBIGs (valley-based insurgent groups) are siding with the junta, so it may not be a threat for that community to be there," Mr Haokip said.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

The valley-dominant Meiteis have alleged the Kuki insurgent groups that had signed the SoO agreement have been used as "mercenaries" to fight against the VBIGs hiding in Myanmar, which - except for one group, the UNLF(P) - have not agreed to lay down arms.

"But in our case it is a known fact that our people are in the pro-democracy group and they are fighting the junta's dictatorial rule. And so we are the affected people. And because of our desire for upholding democracy in Myanmar, our people have been tortured, killed, and they have had to flee. They are clearly refugees. But the fact that the people who have come across are not ethnically similar to the ones in the valley, one can say that's why they are being mistreated and misrepresented," Mr Haokip said.

"Why is Mizoram receiving them (Myanmar refugees) so favourably? What I am trying to say is to illustrate the point that had it been the valley community who were fleeing from Myanmar, they would have had the same reception as our people who have gone to Mizoram," Mr Haokip said.

"We are being ridiculed. It seems like intentional, to make us look bad. Illegal immigrants, narco terrorism, poppy cultivation, we are not the only ones who have engaged in this. Only some of our people were engaged in this because they were looking for a livelihood. Clearly, the state government has not given their due, so they have to look for survival... But I am not justifying it," he said.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

"Perpetrators As Victims"

Mr Haokip alleged the media narrative has made the perpetrators of the violence as the victims. "Earlier, when ethnic cleaning began on May 3, the world knew we were the victims and the perpetrators were the others. Now, because of the media, the narrative is changing. The victims have become the perpetrators, and the perpetrators are being projected as victims," Mr Haokip alleged.

"All these come in the realm of narratives, and narratives are all twisted it seems. In our case we want peace, and therefore we establish, demonstrate that stand very clearly by not going on the offensive. We are not in the wrong. We don't want war. If people kill us, we have to defend ourselves. And therefore we cannot be labelled as perpetrators. All these are factual evidence. It is clearly there for the world to see. Some narrative may pull wool over the eyes of people who are downright ignorant. But anybody who has eyes to see and ears to hear cannot be swayed by false narratives," the KNO spokesperson said.

"False narratives cannot bring about any solution, any peaceful coexistence. We respect fellow human beings irrespective of race, religion or ethnicity. We hope the same will be reciprocated. And then peace will come," he added.

The Manipur government has not given any statement on the comments by the KNO spokesperson yet.

"Media Creation": DK Shivakumar On Demand For More Deputy Chief Ministers

Amid voices raised in Congress for making more Deputy Chief Ministers in Karnataka, state Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Saturday said that there is "no demand", adding that some people just wanted to have their names circulated in the news.

"There is no demand. All is this media creation. Some of them just wanted to have their names circulated in the news. That's it," DK Shivakumar said.

Earlier on June 25, Karnataka Minister and Congress leader KN Rajanna on Monday demanded additional Deputy Chief Ministers in Karnataka and asked the party high command to consider the request.

"Because of the parliament elections, it was delayed. I want the party's high command to consider my request. Many ministers think that many communities who are supporting the Congress party should be given representation of Deputy CMs. But I am not the aspirant," KN Rajanna told ANI.

The demand for more Deputy Chief Ministers was also raised before the Lok Sabha elections by the Congress leaders.

DK Shivakumar, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president, serves as the only Deputy Chief Minister of the state.

The Karnataka Assembly elections were held last year in which Congress won 135 seats pushing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) out of power in the only southern state it ruled.

BJP managed to win 66 seats. Janata Dal-Secular (JDS) bagged 19 seats. Independents have won two seats while Kalyana Rajya Pragathi Paksha and Sarvodaya Karnataka Paksha won one seat each.

146 Indian Students Get Europe's Erasmus Mundus Scholarships

New Delhi: Continuing their outstanding performance, 146 Indian students, including 75 women and 71 men, have been awarded Erasmus Mundus scholarships to pursue a two-year Masters programme in Europe for the 2024 academic year, making India one of the top recipients of the scholarship.
According to the Delegation of the European Union to India and Bhutan, "Worldwide, 2603 students from 137 countries have been awarded scholarships this year for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's degree, which offers a study programme jointly delivered by an international consortium of higher education institutions."

The Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Programme marks its 20th anniversary in 2024, a milestone that underscores the programme's positive impact on students, higher education institutions, and countries beyond the European Union.

"India has been the largest beneficiary of the programme, with over 2000 students receiving the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship since its inception in 2004. Overall, more than 6,000 Erasmus+ short- and long-term scholarships have been awarded to Indian students since the programme opened to international students in 2004, providing access to state-of-the-art education and research facilities, international exposure, and valuable professional networks and thus opening up wider professional opportunities," the statement read.

The Delegation of the European Union to India hosted an event for the grantees, celebrating the growing people-to-people links and mobility between the EU and India. These scholars are set to embark on their international degree programme in Europe starting this September.
The selected students will have the opportunity to study and conduct research at a minimum of two universities in different European countries, earning joint or double degrees in diverse fields such as sustainability, pharmaceuticals, engineering, quantum, data and various STEM and social science disciplines. The fully funded scholarship covers the recipient's tuition fees, travel costs and living allowance.

While congratulating the winners, Herve Delphin, Ambassador of the European Union to India, said: "Over 80,000 Indian students are studying in Europe, reflecting a growing appreciation for the continent's diverse academic offerings, rich cultural heritage, and unparalleled opportunities for personal and professional growth. The fact that India has been a top recipient of Erasmus+ scholarships since their inception, despite their competitive nature, speaks volumes about the calibre of Indian students. This is the start of an enriching and transformative experience for them. As they are about to study and live a unique experience in an EU country, they will also become ambassadors of the partnership between the EU and India. I wish them every success."

Bringing together Indian students, Erasmus and Research Alumni, and representatives of EU Member States (Czech Republic, Germany, France, Italy, and Belgium), the event provided an interactive platform to share information on travel, living and studying in Europe.

Erasmus, meaning European Region Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students, is a programme established in 1987 by the European Union to support not only education for students from across the globe but also to encourage partnerships between universities and countries.

Assam Cabinet Okays Witness Protection Scheme, Tweaks Road Fines

The Assam Cabinet on Thursday approved the Assam Witness Protection Scheme 2024 to ensure adherence to Section 398 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, protecting witnesses against imminent threats during investigations and trials.

The meeting, presided over by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, approved the scheme, which will require witnesses to submit a Witness Protection Application in a prescribed form to a competent authority through its member secretary to obtain a protection order.

The competent authority will be the standing committee in each district, chaired by the District and Sessions Judge, with witnesses categorized as A, B, and C based on threat perception.

A State Witness Protection Authority and a witness protection fund will also be constituted for the purpose, the Chief Minister told reporters after the meeting.

The protection measures under the scheme will include holding of in-camera trials, installation of security devices in the homes of the witness, close protection and patrolling near their home, temporary change of residence, escort to and from the court, provision of government vehicles on the date of hearing, among others, Mr Sarma said.

Regarding traffic regulations, the Cabinet decided to waive fines for document-related violations for two and three-wheelers, although fines will still apply for not wearing helmets.

The Transport Department will not levy fines for lacking documents such as licences, registrations, or pollution certificates, opting instead for legal actions as necessary. Three-wheelers will receive four warnings before fines are imposed for rule violations.

In educational reforms, the Cabinet approved a special recruitment drive to regularise contractual teachers under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and state pool teachers, benefiting approximately 35,133 teachers. This move aims to stabilise the teaching workforce and improve educational outcomes in the state.

Other decisions included the approval of the Assam Private Placement Agencies for Recruitment of Workers' (Regulation) Rules, 2024, aimed at ensuring worker safety and maintaining a comprehensive database of workers and private placement agencies in the state.

The Cabinet also cancelled tenders for markets, bazaars, and haats previously floated by Zilla Parishads and Panchayats due to concerns over high bidding prices, opting to reissue tenders.

Infrastructure development projects were also greenlit, including water supply schemes worth Rs 81.38 crore for Karimganj and Rs 72.74 crore for Hailakandi to enhance clean drinking water access in urban areas.

In Nalbari, several initiatives were approved, including the establishment of a convention centre, a circuit house, construction of embankments along Mora Pagladiya and Burhadia rivers, a flyover to Nalbari Medical College, a new degree college in Barkhetri, financial grants for temples, a state-of-the-art sports complex, and a skill centre in Dhamdhama.

Australian Envoy Says Eager To Be Part Of India's Space Journey

India is a top-tier strategic partner and Australia is now eager to be part of the fast-developing South Asian nation's space journey, Australian High Commissioner to India Philip Green OAM said on Wednesday. Space Machines, an Australian firm, entered into a $18 million pact with NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

This partnership will involve deploying a satellite inspection and observation payload aboard ISRO's Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) in 2026.

Rajat Kulshrestha, co-founder of Space Machines, said this will be the largest satellite launched by Australia to date.

"We now describe India as a top-tier strategic partner, along with the US, the UK, and Japan. For us, India is now in that very elite group. We have a specific partnership with India, to which we are devoting $18 million to support collaborations between Australian and Indian space firms," Green said during the inaugural session of India Space Congress 2024 in New Delhi.

This mission will mark a defining moment for both nations in the area of space collaboration, the Australian High Commissioner said.

"We all have come here with a hunger to be part of India's space journey. India is a large subcontinent, but it is only a third of the size of Australia. You are the most populous nation on Earth, with 50 times the number of people in Australia. That difference drives complementarity.

"Because of our large landmass and small population, we have some of the darkest skies in the world, which is a significant advantage in space. Our tracking stations, particularly in Perth and Canberra, were privileged to be the first to receive signals from Chandrayan's successful moon landing last year," he said.

Green said Australia's geographic location allows it to host launch sites, including one near the equatorial sweet spot.

In addition to our unique territory, we possess skills and competencies built on deep scientific capability in areas such as robotics, composite materials, and earth observation, he said.

Charity Group That "Diverted" Funds Of Poor Students Raided By Probe Agency

Searches against a Telangana-based charity group have found that about Rs 300 crore worth of foreign funds raised partly from domestic donations in the name of providing free education and meals to downtrodden children were diverted for "unauthorized" purposes, the Enforcement Directorate said on Tuesday.

The raids were undertaken at 11 locations of the Operation Mobilisation (OM) group of charities and its key office-bearers in and around Hyderabad on June 21-22, the federal agency said in a statement.

The money laundering case stems from a state police CID FIR that alleged that the charity group and others raised "substantial" funds of around Rs 300 crore from foreign donors based in the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, Argentina, Denmark, Germany, Finland, Ireland, Malaysia, Norway, Brazil, Czech Republic Republic, France, Romania, Singapore, Sweden and Switzerland in the name of providing free education and meals to Dalit and downtrodden children.

These children, according to the CID FIR, were studying in more than 100 Good Shepherd schools run by the group that is alleged to have "diverted" the said funds for asset creation and other "unauthorised" purposes.

"CID investigation found that suppressing the fact of sponsorship of students, tuition and other fees ranging from Rs 1,000-Rs 1,500 per month were collected from the students and substantial funds were put into fixed deposits and/or diverted to other related entities of the OM group.

"Funds were also received from the government under the Right to Education Act but the same were not recorded properly and other incomes were grossly under-reported in the books of accounts," the ED alleged.

It said a probe found that several suspicious transactions indicated "diversion" of the funds of the OM group of charities and multiple immovable properties of the key office-bearers of the group that are spread across Telangana, Goa, Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra.

"FCRA registrations for most of the group entities were not renewed and to bypass the same, foreign funds received in FCRA registered 'OM Books Foundation' were diverted to other group entities as loans which are yet to be repaid," it claimed.

The office-bearers of the group were employed as consultants with shell entities incorporated in Goa and were receiving salaries, the ED said.

The searches led to the seizure of "incriminating" documents, digital devices, records of "clandestine" transactions, properties and benami companies, the agency said.

Jammu Paper Leak "Kingpin" Under Scanner Amid NEET-NET Row: Sources

An alleged kingpin of a paper leak in Jammu and Kashmir is being probed by the Enforcement Directorate to see if he has links to the irregularities in the NEET-UG and UGC-NET exams. Yatin Yadav, the alleged mastermind of the 2022 JKSSB sub-inspector recruitment exam paper leak was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate or ED today as part of a money laundering case.

According to the ED sources, it is being investigated whether Yadav has any connection to the paper leak cases of the key examinations that have hit headlines recently.

The ED probe stems from a CBI First Information Report and chargesheet against Yadav, a suspected tout, and some others. The ED sources claimed that being the "kingpin" of the alleged paper leak gang, Yadav executed a well-crafted plan involving other accused touts based in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir to arrange candidates willing to access the leaked paper against payments ranging from Rs 15 lakh to Rs 30 lakh.

The Jammu and Kashmir Service Selection Board (JKSSB) sub-inspector recruitment exam was held on March 27, 2022.

After the exam, the payments - mainly in cash - collected from the aspirants were routed to Yadav's bank accounts, they said.

The ED had earlier attached Yadav's bank accounts, a company called New Global Fumigation Corporation and assets of some others worth Rs 1 crore under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) as part of its probe.

The arrest comes at a time when allegations of irregularities in the conduct of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) and the University Grants Commission-National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) have rocked the country, leading to the Centre handing over their investigation to the CBI.

The CBI is looking into the allegations of malpractice in both exams conducted by the National Testing Agency.

The Centre on Saturday replaced NTA Director General Subodh Singh and handed over the probe into irregularities in NEET-UG to the CBI, which is now probing a total of six cases in the matter. Pradeep Singh Kharola took the additional charge of NTA on Monday and had meetings with officials of the testing body.

The Education Ministry had also set up a seven-member panel headed by former ISRO chief K Radhakrishnan to review the NTA's functioning.

Poll Body Gets Applications For EVM Verification On 8 Lok Sabha Seats

The Election Commission has received eight applications from aggrieved candidates, including those from the BJP and the Congress, for verification of tampering or modification in micro-controller chips embedded in the EVMs post declaration of Lok Sabha election results on June 4.

Terming the suspicion of manipulation of the electronic voting machines "unfounded", the Supreme Court had on April 26 rejected the demand for reverting to the old paper ballot system.

But at the same time, the top court had opened a window for the aggrieved unsuccessful candidates securing second and third places in the poll results and allowed them to seek verification of micro-controller chips embedded in five per cent EVMs per assembly constituency on a written request upon the payment of a fee to the poll panel.

BJP's Ahmednagar (Maharashtra) candidate Sujay Vikhe-Patil has sought verification of the machines from 40 polling stations.

Vikhe-Patil had lost to Nilesh Lanke of NCP (Sharad Pawar) faction.

A YSRCP and a DMDK candidate too have applied for the verification, according to data shared by the poll panel.

According to the EC, eight parliamentary seats spread across six states are involved. The total number of polling stations for which verification has been sought is 92.

Candidates who come second or third and seek verification of the EVMs will have to pay Rs 47,200 per EVM set, according to the standard operating procedure issued by the EC on June 1.

According to the EC's Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), the cost submitted by manufacturers BEL and ECIL to carry out EVM "check and verification" is Rs 40,000 (plus 18 per cent GST) per set of EVM.

"In addition to the cost incurred by the manufacturers, there are also administrative costs like cost of labour to shift the units, CCTV coverage, electricity charges, videography costs and various other operational costs at the district election officer level," the document said.

It, however, said to make the verification process "more accessible" and inclusive in compliance to the referred mandate of the Supreme Court, it is decided that instead of going purely by the actual economic costs incurred, the administrative expenditure on EVM verification will be treated as "election expenditure and borne by the central or state government, as the case may be".

"Accordingly, the administrative charges will be waived for the applicants -- the same shall not be charged to the applicants," it noted.

The charges for EVM verification to be paid by the applicant candidate is for the current financial year 2024-25 -- till March 31, 2025, it said.

An EVM set has at least one Ballot Unit, one Control Unit and a VVPAT machine.

Separately, YSRCP and BJD candidates from Andhra Pradesh and Odisha respectively have also applied for EVM check following the announcement of assembly results on June 4.

Assembly polls in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh were held along with the Lok Sabha elections.

In the verification exercise for assembly poll results, total assembly constituencies involved are three where verification has been sought in 26 polling stations.

According to the SOP, the concerned state chief electoral officer (CEO) was required to communicate to the manufacturers the consolidated list of applicants within 30 days of the date of declaration of results -- by July 4. The CEOs have already conveyed the same to the manufacturers 15 days ahead of the schedule, the EC said.

The technical SOP enumerating the methodology and steps for checking and verification of burnt memory/ micro-controller of the EVM units will be issued by the EC in due course.

At 35.2 Degrees, Delhi Sees Warmest Night In 14 Years: Weather Office

Delhi recorded its warmest night in at least 14 years, with the minimum temperature settling more than eight notches above normal at 35.2 degrees Celsius, the IMD said on Wednesday.

The maximum temperature was recorded 4.8 notches above the season's average at 43.6 degrees Celsius.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the previous warmest night in Delhi was recorded on June 3, 2010, when the minimum temperature had soared to 34.7 degrees Celsius.

An IMD official said the books of Delhi's benchmark Safdarjung observatory were analysed till 1969 to ascertain this record.

"With this, the minimum temperature in Delhi has reached an all-time high for the month of June. Delhi is on an 'orange' alert due to the prevailing heatwave conditions," the official added.

Temperatures in the city have remained above 40 degrees Celsius since May 12. In these 36 days, the city recorded 16 days when the mercury reached or surpassed 45 degrees Celsius, according to IMD data.

Late on Wednesday, Delhi is likely to experience a duststorm or thunderstorm or lightning with very light rain, accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kilometres per hour, the IMD forecast said.

A fresh western disturbance is expected to bring some relief from the high temperatures. On Thursday, the city may witness light rainfall, induced by a fresh western disturbance.

Hospitals in Delhi are witnessing a spike in heatstroke casualties as the brutal heat wave continues to sweep the national capital.

"Political Football": Woman Suing UK Intel Services Denies China Spy Claims

A woman accused of "political interference activities" in the UK on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party denied the claims on Tuesday as part of her legal claim against intelligence services.

Domestic intelligence service MI5 warned in 2022 that Christine Lee was a Chinese agent who had engaged with members of parliament after she donated £500,000 ($635,000) to Labour MP Barry Gardiner.

Lee is now suing the security services, and on Tuesday told a hearing that she was used as a "political football" and that she "categorically denied" the claims.

She also alleged that she had been discriminated against "on the grounds of my race".

The Security Service submitted to the two-day hearing that the decision was "rational and lawful".

"Ms Lee's race and/or nationality played no part in the decision to issue an interference alert," said Victoria Wakefield, lawyer for the Security Service.

"As noted, the decision was made on grounds of national security in order to counter the threat posed by Ms Lee's links to the CCP," she added.

The hearing is expected to end on Tuesday, with a decision due at a later date.

Philippines Accuses Chinese Ships Of "Ramming", Damaging Boats

The Philippine government on Monday accused Chinese ships of ramming and damaging its boats in the South China Sea during a confrontation in waters off the Second Thomas Shoal, home to a garrison of Filipino troops.

"The People's Liberation Army-Navy, China Coast Guard and Chinese Maritime Militia vessels engaged in dangerous maneuvers, including ramming and towing," Manila's national task force on the West Philippine Sea said in a statement.

"Their actions put at risk the lives of our personnel and damaged our boats."

The Second Thomas Shoal has seen an escalating number of confrontations between Chinese and Philippine ships in recent months.

These have often taken place during Philippine resupply missions to a garrison of Filipino troops on a grounded navy vessel, the Sierra Madre, aimed at asserting Manila's claims to the reef.

The shoal lies about 200 kilometres (120 miles) from the western Philippine island of Palawan and more than 1,000 kilometres from China's nearest major landmass, Hainan island.

The Chinese coast guard said early Monday a Philippine resupply ship in the area had "ignored many solemn warnings from the Chinese side" and that they "took control measures" against it "in accordance with the law."

It "approached the... Chinese vessel in an unprofessional way, resulting in a collision", Beijing said.

Philippine Defence Secretary Gilberto C. Teodoro, vowed to defend his country's sovereignty, saying China's "dangerous and reckless behaviour in the West Philippine Sea shall be resisted".

"It should now be clear to the international community that China's actions are the true obstacles to peace and stability in the South China Sea," he added.

The Philippine government statement did not specify which boats were rammed and the extent of the damage.

Manila's allies voiced concern over China's actions.

The United States ambassador to Philippines, MaryKay Carlson said in a post on social media X that Washington "condemns" China's "aggressive dangerous maneuvers which caused bodily injury, damaged Philippine vessels, and hindered lawful maritime operations."

Japan's ambassador Endo Kazuya expressed his country's "grave concern over the repeated dangerous and aggressive actions" by the China Coast Guard.

"We oppose any threat or use of force contrary to international law," reacted the French ambassador Marie Fontanel in a social media pos

BJP Central Team Reaches Kolkata Amid Allegations Of Post-Poll Violence

A four-member central team of the BJP, including senior leaders Ravi Shankar Prasad and Biplab Kumar Deb, arrived in Kolkata this evening for a two-day visit to take stock of the situation amid allegations of violence against party workers in the state after the Lok Sabha elections.

Mr Prasad claimed that the people of the state along with the party workers were afraid and apprehensive over the alleged post-poll violence.

"Elections were held across the country, but violence happened only in Bengal," he told reporters at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.

"If Mamata ji believes in democracy, she has to reply to this," Mr Prasad, a former Union minister, said.

Biplab Deb, former Chief Minister of Tripura, claimed there has not been any political violence in the northeastern state since BJP came to power there.

"We will speak to the victims and take stock of the situation during our two-day stay in Bengal," he said.

The BJP alleged that its workers and supporters were being subjected to violence and intimidation in different parts of Bengal by supporters of the Trinamool Congress after the Lok Sabha elections ended.

The BJP won 12 of the 42 Lok Sabha constituencies in Bengal, while the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC emerged victorious in 29 seats and the Congress bagged one.

Kate Middleton Says "Making Good Progress" With Cancer Treatment

Kate, Britain's Princess of Wales, has said she is making good progress as she undergoes preventative chemotherapy but is "not out of the woods" ahead of her first public appearance on Saturday since surgery revealed the presence of cancer.

In a personal written message released on Friday, Kate said she had been "blown away" by the thousands of kind messages from across the globe which followed her cancer announcement in March.

She said they had made a world of difference to her and her husband, heir-to-the-throne Prince William.

"I am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days," her statement said.

"On those bad days you feel weak, tired and you have to give in to your body resting. But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well."

Her improved health means she will be able to appear in public for the first time since last December when she joined other senior royals for an annual Christmas Day church service.

Kate, 42, will accompany her three children, Princes George and Louis and Princess Charlotte, in a carriage during Saturday's 'Trooping the Colour', an annual military parade held in central London to mark the monarch's official birthday.

She will also join King Charles, Queen Camilla and the other senior family members on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, the high-profile pinnacle of the event.

While Kate said she was hoping to take part in other events this year, aides cautioned that Saturday did not mark a return to a full schedule of work.

"My treatment is ongoing and will be for a few more months," she said. "I'm looking forward to attending The King's Birthday Parade this weekend with my family and hope to join a few public engagements over the summer, but equally knowing I am not out of the woods yet."

ABDOMINAL SURGERY

Kate spent two weeks in hospital in January after she underwent major abdominal surgery, and two months later she announced in a video message that tests had revealed the presence of cancer, and she would begin preventative chemotherapy.

Her office, Kensington Palace, has declined to give further details about the type of cancer or about her treatment, other than to say the preventative chemotherapy had begun in February.

In her message, Kate said on days when she felt well, it was "a joy to engage with school life, spend personal time on the things that give me energy and positivity". As part of that, she was starting to do work from home, and was able to hold some meetings.

"I am learning how to be patient, especially with uncertainty," said the princess, who is often known by her maiden name Kate Middleton. "Taking each day as it comes, listening to my body, and allowing myself to take this much needed time to heal."

A new photo of the princess was also released to coincide with her message, showing Kate looking well dressed in a jacket and jeans, standing under a tree on the Windsor estate to the west of London, where the family home is located.

Her illness has coincided with that of Charles, 75, who has also been undergoing treatment for cancer. He returned to public duties in April, and has remained busy, although his diary commitments are being limited to minimise risks to his recovery.

The monarch was delighted to hear Kate was attending Saturday's parade, a royal source said. Kensington Palace also said William was pleased to see Kate starting to return to the work and projects that were so important to her.

"He will continue to focus his time on supporting his wife and children, while continuing to undertake his public duties," a spokesperson said.

Kota Teen Sets Herself On Fire After Gang-Rape; 2 Cousins Detained: Cops

An 18-year-old died of self-immolation after she was allegedly gang-raped here, police said on Friday.

The police have detained two of the victim's cousins and are on the lookout for three other accused in the case, they said.

Superintendent of Police Kota (Rural) Karan Sharma said that they received information on Friday morning that a woman was admitted to the hospital with burn injuries.

The victim's father narrated the incident to the police and said that the accused had kidnapped her daughter from their house on Thursday night and taken her to a shop. One of the accused sat outside while the rest raped the woman.

"When her uncle got up to drink water at night, he noticed that his niece was not in the house. He went outside to look for her and heard her screaming from a shop. When he tried to open the door, the other accused sitting outside, beat him up. After the commotion, the shop's door was opened, and the woman came out crying," he said.

After the incident, the woman locked herself in her room and set herself on fire. The family managed to douse the flames and rushed her to the hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries, police said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Shivam Joshi said that based on the complaint lodged by the father, a case has been registered against the accused under sections 376 (D) (gang rape), 366 (kidnapping) and 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code.

UP YouTuber's "Tips" On How To Sexually Abuse Infants Lands Her in Jail

A woman was arrested here on Thursday for allegedly giving "tips on sexually assaulting children" on her social media channel, police said.

The matter surfaced after several people shared the offending video of the woman on X, urging police to initiate proceedings against her.

In a YouTube video clip, the woman is purportedly "advising" viewers on how to sexually exploit infants, they said.

"We have arrested one Shikha Maitreya who made a video on her YouTube channel 'Kunwari Begum', on which she was giving tips on sexually assaulting kids," Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Swatantra Kumar Singh said.

Police action against the woman came after National Commission for Women chairman Rekha Sharma took cognisance of the video on X.

Rekha Sharma highlighted the matter to National Commission for Protection of Child Rights chairperson Priyank Kanoongo on the social media platform, and called for her arrest.

Police are investigating further to know Maitreya's intentions behind what she said on her YouTube channel, the ACP added.

"Pressing Russia To Ensure Release Of Indians In Its Military": India

India on Wednesday said it has been pressing Russia to ensure the safety and repatriation of its nationals employed by the Russian Army.

The comments by Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra came a day after the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said two more Indians serving with the Russian military were killed in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The killing of two Indians has taken the number of such deaths to four.

"Since the first day, we have constantly been discussing this matter with the Russian authorities, the system and the leadership," Mr Kwatra said.

"All of our efforts are aimed at keeping the Indians safe," he said at a media briefing while responding to a question on the matter.

"We have clearly told the Russian officials that all Indians in the war zone, howsoever they got there is another matter, should be returned (to India)," he said.

Confirming the deaths of the two Indians, the MEA on Tuesday said India has strongly taken up the matter with Russia and sought early release and return of all Indian nationals who are with the Russian Army.

In a strongly-worded statement, it said India has demanded that there be a "verified stop to any further recruitment of Indian nationals by the Russian Army and that such activities would not be in "consonance with our partnership".

The foreign secretary said New Delhi has taken the issue very seriously.

The government has taken immediate action on receiving information about "Indians in the war zone".

"We have contacted their families, examined how the individual reached (Russia), and asked Russian authorities to respond and this will continue," he said.

In March, 30-year-old Hyderabad resident Mohammed Asfan succumbed to injuries sustained while serving with Russian troops on the frontlines with Ukraine.

In February, Hemal Ashwinbhai Mangua, a 23-year-old resident of Surat in Gujarat, died in a Ukrainian air strike while serving as a "security helper" in the Donetsk region.

A total of 10 Indians working as support staff with the Russian military have been released and repatriated to India, according to officials.

According to reports, around 200 Indian nationals were recruited as security helpers in the Russian military.

World's Oldest Privately Owned Book Sells For $3.8 Million At UK Auction

The world's oldest book in a private collection, and one of the earliest books in existence, sold at auction in London on Tuesday for more than £3 million.

The Crosby-Schoyen Codex was previously owned by the Norwegian businessman and rare book collector Martin Schoyen, and contains the earliest complete copies of two texts from the Bible -- the book of Jonah and Peter's first epistle.

Bidding for the text at Christie's auction house started at £1.7 million for a mix of enthusiastic online and in-person bidders.

It sold for £3,065,000 ($3,898,000) including taxes to an anonymous phone bidder.

The codex was discovered by Egyptian farmers in the 1950s.

It was originally copied by a monk in what is now Egypt around the fourth century AD, making it at least 1,600 years old and far older than more renowned ancient texts such as the Gutenberg Bible, which dates from the 1450s.

Written in Coptic script on double-sided papyrus leaves now preserved between plexiglass plates, the ancient biblical text represents advances in written technology at a time when single-sided scrolls were more commonplace.

Twelve additional select pieces from the Schoyen Collection also went up for auction alongside the literary jewel.

The entire collection comprises over 20,000 pieces, spanning 5,000 years of history from 3,500 BC to the present day, according to its website.

Although impressive, the sale is far from the highest selling price for a rare text.

Last year, the Codex Sassoon -- a Hebrew Bible more than 1,000 years old -- sold for $38.1 million at Sotheby's in New York in a new record.

That surpassed the $30.8 million that Microsoft founder Bill Gates paid in 1994 for Leonardo da Vinci's Codex Leicester manuscript.

The most expensive historical document remains one of the first prints of the US Constitution, which Sotheby's sold for $43 million in November 2021.

Delhi Man Shot Dead By Terrorists On Jammu Bus Trying To Warn Passengers

Undeterred by gunfire, 21-year-old Saurav Gupta, onboard the bus attacked by terrorists in Jammu, took it upon himself to raise an alarm. But he was killed by a bullet that pierced his neck.

Mr Gupta was among the nine pilgrims killed in the terror attack on a bus in Jammu's Reasi on Sunday.

His body was brought to Delhi in an ambulance by his father Kuldeep Gupta and other family members. He was cremated near his home in northeast Delhi's Mandoli area today.

Saurav had gone to the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu with his wife Shivani to pray for a baby. The couple, married for two years, was scheduled to return home later the same day.

"She saw her husband die in front of her eyes. She was inconsolable," Manoj Gupta, Saurav's uncle, said.

"He was sitting behind the driver next to a window when the terrorists attacked the bus. As soon the firing began, he raised an alarm but was shot," Manoj Gupta said.

The bullet hit him in the back of his neck since he was sitting by the window.

"His wife Shivani Gupta escaped unhurt in the attack but suffered fractures in legs and face when the bus fell into a gorge," he added.

"Shivani had even made a video call to her grandmother-in-law from the bus just before the attack to show her the scenic view," he said. She is currently under treatment at Shanti Niketan Nursing Home near the couple's house.

Saurav, who lost his mother at the age of three, is survived by his wife, father, who works in an export house, and a younger brother, a college student.

Saurav too used to work in an export house in Delhi's Gandhi Nagar area.

His uncle said the couple had gone to the Vaishno Devi shrine last week and on June 9, the two decided to go to the Shiv Khori temple on a bus.

"Indian Army must give a fitting reply to the terrorists responsible for the attack," he said.

Nine people were killed and 41 injured as the terrorists opened fire at a 53-seater bus, which was on its way from the Shiv Khori temple to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra Sunday evening.

The bus veered off the road and fell into a deep gorge near the Teryath village of the Poni area of Reasi.

"Safeguarding India's Border Will Remain Topmost Priority": Rajnath Singh

Safeguarding India's border will remain the topmost priority and efforts will continue to take defence manufacturing and exports to greater heights, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Monday shortly after he was retained to helm the key responsibility in the new government.

Rajnath Singh was among the senior BJP leaders, including Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Nirmala Sitharaman and S Jaishankar, who retained the ministries they handled in the previous government.

"I express my heartfelt gratitude to PM Shri @narendramodi for his continued trust and confidence in me. I shall continue to serve our motherland as India's Defence Minister," Rajnath Singh said on 'X'.

"Safeguarding India's border will remain our topmost priority and we shall continue protecting India's integrity & sovereignty. Under the visionary leadership of PM Modi we shall rededicate ourselves to strengthen 'Make in India' and take defence manufacturing & exports to greater heights," he said.

Rajnath Singh's assertion comes amid an over four-year border row with China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh.

As the defence minister since 2019, Rajnath Singh initiated several path-breaking measures to strengthen India's combat readiness along the border with China as well as to boost the country's defence manufacturing.

Under his leadership, the defence ministry pursued an aggressive policy to enhance infrastructure along the frontier region that significantly helped faster military mobilisation in sensitive sectors.

His tenure as the defence minister also saw India ramping up its maritime prowess in the strategic waterways in the Indian Ocean region.

Rajnath Singh was elected for the third consecutive time from the Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency in the recent general election.

The new government is expected to also focus on further bolstering the country's military preparedness and enhancing key infrastructure in areas along the country's borders.

India's defence exports crossed the Rs 21,000 crore mark for the first time in 2023-24 and the defence ministry has set a target of increasing it to Rs 50,000 crore in the next five-six years.

In the last few years, the government has taken a series of measures to promote domestic defence production.

India is one of the largest importers of arms globally.

According to estimates, the Indian armed forces are projected to spend around USD 130 billion in capital procurement by 2029.

The government now wants to reduce dependence on imported military platforms and has decided to support domestic defence manufacturing.

The defence ministry has set a goal of a turnover of USD 25 billion (Rs 1.75 lakh crore) in defence manufacturing in the next five years.

Sanjay Seth, a member of Parliament from Ranchi, has been given the portfolio of Minister of State in the defence ministry.

Seth became an MP from Ranchi for the first time in 2019 and he was a member of the Standing Committee on Information Technology.

In the recent Lok Sabha polls, he was again elected from Ranchi.

"Grossly Incorrect": Suresh Gopi Denies Buzz Over Resignation From Modi 3.0

Union Minister and actor-politician Suresh Gopi dismissed media reports suggesting that he was seeking an "exit" from the Narendra Modi-led government and called them "grossly incorrect".

In a Facebook post, Mr Gopi said that it is a matter of pride for him to be in the Council of Ministers of the Modi government and to represent the people of Kerala.

His statement came after his remarks to the media on Sunday night, expressing hope that he would soon be relieved of his post as he wants to do more films, sparking speculation about his continued role in the Modi-led government.

"A few media platforms are spreading the incorrect news that I am going to resign from the Council of Ministers of the Modi government. This is grossly incorrect. It is a matter of pride for me to be in the Council of Ministers of the Modi government and to represent the people of Kerala," he said in the post.

Attaching his photo with PM Modi on his FB page, Mr Gopi said, "Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji, we are committed to the development and prosperity of Kerala." Earlier, the Congress's Kerala unit had posted a news channel video on 'X' containing Mr Gopi's remarks.

When reporters asked whether he chose the post of Minister of State (MoS) considering his film commitments, a smiling Mr Gopi said, "Nothing was demanded. I had told (them) that I don't want this. I feel that I will be relieved without delay."

Asked whether this posed a problem for the people of Thrissur who elected him, he replied, "There is no problem for them. They know very well. As an MP for the people of Thrissur, I will perform very well. I desperately want to do films."

During his chat with two Malayalam news channels on Sunday night, he also expressed his desire to establish an AIIMS in Kerala and collaborate with other ministers in fulfilling his duties as an MP.

Reacting to reports suggesting that Gopi, the lone BJP MP from Kerala, was expressing displeasure over not being given a Cabinet or MoS (independent) charge, BJP state chief Surendran said it is fake news.

The state unit of the Congress had slammed Mr Gopi and the BJP over the development.

"@BJP4India @narendramodi why this mockery of voters? Why don't you tell your MP to first decide what he wants to do in life and most importantly stop this show in front of the media after taking oath in the name of God and the constitution," Congress in Kerala said in a post on X.

Over 16,800 Booked In Delhi For Defective Number Plates In 2024

The Delhi Traffic Police has booked over 16,800 people for defective number plates so far this year, up by 286 per cent from the corresponding period of last year, according to official data.

According to a senior officer of the Delhi Traffic Police, 16,859 people were booked for defective number plates between January 1 and June 5 this year.

The officer said the figure was at 4,363 in the corresponding period of 2023.

This represents a notable surge of nearly 286 per cent in prosecutions compared to the previous year, the officer added.

"This surge in prosecution is part of a broader effort to enhance road safety and enforce compliance with traffic regulations," he said.

The traffic police department said it has intensified the crackdown on vehicles with defective number plates and the initiative has led to a significant increase in the number of penalties imposed.

"Defective number plates, which include those that are illegible, improperly formatted or do not conform to the prescribed standards, have been identified as a major issue contributing to traffic violations and security concerns," the officers said.

Special drives and checkpoints have been established across the city, with a particular focus on high-traffic areas and entry-exit points, police said.

The Delhi Traffic Police has also undertaken a thorough analysis of the top 10 traffic circles with the highest number of challans issued for defective number plates in 2024, according to the police officer.

Colombia Says Will Suspend Coal Sales To Israel "Until Gaza Genocide Stops"

Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced Saturday that his government will suspend coal exports to Israel while it continues its war against Hamas in the Gaza strip.

"We are going to suspend coal exports to Israel until the genocide stops," the leftist leader wrote on X.

In May, Petro -- who describes Israel's campaign in Gaza as "genocidal" -- announced Colombia would sever ties with Israel over the conflict and open an embassy in Ramallah in the Palestinian territories.

He also said that Bogota would stop purchasing weapons made by Israel, one of the main suppliers of the South American country's security forces.

According to the Colombian government, the coal export ban will enter into force five days after the decree published in the official gazette and will not affect goods that have already been authorized for shipment.

Kerala Woman Beats Her Baby, Sends Video Of Assault To Husband Who Remarried

A woman has been arrested for allegedly beating up her one-year-old child, filming the brutal assault, and sending the video to her estranged husband in Kerala's Alappuzha district, the police said.

In the purported video, the woman could be seen hitting the child repeatedly and saying, "Watch this and enjoy".

A case has been registered against the woman based on the complaint of her husband, who is from Thiruvananthapuram.

"As per her statement, her husband married another woman recently and she was frustrated over this. She claimed that this made her beat the child and send the video to her husband," a police officer said.

The woman was arrested today under several Sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Juvenile Justice Act, he added.

Further action would be taken after consulting with the local child welfare committee since she was the guardian of two children, including the infant she beat up, the police further said.

There were no visible injury marks on the child, sources added.

No Need To Use Nuclear Weapons For Victory In Ukraine, Says Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday there was no need to use nuclear weapons to deliver victory for Moscow in Ukraine, the strongest signal yet from the Kremlin chief that there will not be a nuclear strike.

Putin, whose forces have been making advances in eastern Ukraine in recent months, said he did not see the conditions for the use of such weapons and requested that people stop discussing the nuclear topic.

However, Putin, who leads the world's biggest nuclear power, said he did not rule out changes to Russia's nuclear doctrine, which sets out the conditions under which such weapons could be used.

He also said that if necessary Russia could test a nuclear weapon, though he saw no need to do so at present.

Putin's response came to a question from Sergei Karaganov, an influential Russian analyst, who asked if Putin should hold a "nuclear pistol to the temple" of the West over Ukraine.

"The use is possible in an exceptional case - in the event of a threat to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country. I don't think that such a case has come. There is no such need," Putin said at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum.

"But this doctrine is a living tool and we are carefully watching what is happening in the world around us and do not exclude making some changes to this doctrine. This is also related to the testing of nuclear weapons."

NUCLEAR DOCTRINE

Russia's published 2020 nuclear doctrine sets out the conditions under which a Russian president would consider using a nuclear weapon: broadly as a response to an attack using nuclear or other weapons of mass destruction, or to the use of conventional weapons against Russia "when the very existence of the state is put under threat".

"If necessary, we will conduct tests. So far, there is no need for this either, since our information and computer capabilities allow us to produce everything in its current form."

Karaganov last year proposed a limited nuclear strike on a NATO member in Europe to force the West to back off in the conflict over Ukraine and thus avert World War Three.

U.S. President Joe Biden last week relaxed some restrictions on Ukraine's use of U.S. weaponry inside Russia, prompting warnings from Moscow of a potentially dangerous escalation in the conflict.

Putin said on Wednesday he could deploy conventional missiles within striking distance of the United States and its European allies if they allowed Ukraine to strike deeper into Russia with long-range Western weapons. He also said the West was wrong to assume Russia would never use nuclear weapons.

Rahul Gandhi Conspiring To Scare Domestic, Foreign Investors: BJP

The BJP on Thursday accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of conspiring to scare domestic and foreign investors, asserting that the stock market has begun rising as the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government is set to return to office for a third consecutive term.

Addressing a press conference after Mr Gandhi alleged a "biggest stock market scam" worth Rs 30 lakh crore and pointed fingers at Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister Piyush Goyal claimed that domestic investors in fact made money while the loss was suffered by foreign investors.

The BJP leader also dismissed as baseless Mr Gandhi's demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the matter, saying he keeps making useless comments.

Mr Goyal said the Rs 30 lakh crore figure highlighted by Mr Gandhi was a notional amount and did not pertain to trading.

"He (Gandhi) does not understand. That is why people of India do not trust him," Mr Goyal said, citing the big rise in stock market under the BJP government to assert that retail and domestic investors benefitted the most.

"I think Rahul Gandhi should be concerned about the fear of investors as the market crashed when the Congress was doing better than expected. Now, people are confident that the Modi government is coming back, and the market has stabilised and is reclaiming its previous highs," he said.

The trading value was around Rs 6,840 crore, Mr Goyal said and added that when the Congress was seen gaining in seats on the day of the Lok Sabha poll result on June 4, then it fell.

The minister expressed confidence that the reforms envisioned by the government will continue at a time when the country is poised for a bright future. "We are delighted that our allies are progressive and support reforms," Mr Goyal said.

They know what is good for the people of India and that the Modi government has taken the country to new heights, he added.

Rahul Gandhi said stock markets surged after "fake" exit polls and then crashed the day votes for the Lok Sabha polls were counted on June 4.

"The common people of India lost Rs 30 lakh crore in the stock market on June 4...We demand a JPC investigation into this biggest-ever stock market scam," Mr Gandhi said.

Rebutting the allegations, Mr Goyal said Mr Gandhi was desperate after the opposition alliance failed in its bid for power and Modi is set to start his third term.

He is now hatching a conspiracy to scare domestic and foreign investors from putting their money in India when the prime minister is working to make the country the third largest global economy, Mr Goyal said.

When the exit polls were broadcast, it was foreign investors who bought expensive stocks while domestic investors sold. When the market crashed, it was the other way round, he claimed to assert that domestic investors made money.

It is in the nature of markets to go up and down due to various factors and one has to take a long-term view to see how it has performed, Mr Goyal said, noting that its valuation has crossed USD 5 trillion for the first time.

The market cap has now risen to Rs 415 lakh crore from Rs 67 lakh crore when the Congress-led UPA government demitted office in 2014, he said, adding that the valuation of listed public sector firms has gone up by four times.

The share of domestic investors in the market has gone up to 84 per cent from 79 per cent in 10 years and this shows that they are the ones who have benefitted the most under the BJP-led NDA government, he said.

The size of the mutual fund industry has surged to Rs 56 lakh crore from Rs 10 lakh crore in this period, Mr Goyal added. The Modi government is coming back and investors have trust in India's growth story, he said.

Questioned about the comments of Prime Minister Modi and Shah on the stock market movement, Mr Goyal said every party makes claims about its success and the Congress also did so.

BJP Leader Explains Big Factor Behind Party's Huge Win In Indore

The Congress candidate's decision to withdraw played a major role in the landslide victory of the BJP's Shankar Lalwani from the Indore Lok Sabha constituency, Madhya Pradesh minister Kailash Vijayvargiya on Wednesday.

Mr Lalwani won by 11.75 lakh votes against his nearest BSP rival, though the second-highest votes were bagged by NOTA.

Akshay Kanti Bam, the Congress candidate, pulled out of the fray on the last day of withdrawal of nominations, leaving the opposition party without any candidate in Indore and offering the BJP a near walk-over. Bam joined the BJP soon thereafter.

"I think Lalwani has won by such a big margin that no one can beat his record. The credit for this goes to Bam also. Applaud (for Bam) again," said Vijayvargiya at an official function on the occasion of World Environment Day where Bam was also present on the stage.

The minister launched the renovation of an ancient stepwell as part of the Madhya Pradesh government's 'Namami Gange' campaign here.

"Will Speak To Him Soon": Eknath Shinde As Devendra Fadnavis Offers To Resign

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday said he will speak with Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, who has offered to resign from the post following the BJP's electoral reverses in the state.

Interacting with reporters here, Shinde said electoral defeat was a collective responsibility as the three parties -- BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP -- had contested the Lok Sabha elections as an alliance.

The BJP managed to win nine Lok Sabha seats in the state, as against 22 won in the 2019 elections, while the Shinde-led Shiv Sena emerged victorious on seven seats and Ajit Pawar-led NCP could win one seat. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Shiv Sena-BJP coalition had won 41 of the 48 seats in Maharashtra.

"I will speak to Devendraji soon," Shinde told reporters here when asked about Fadnavis' offer to resign as deputy chief minister and focus on rebuilding the party for the assembly elections later this year.

He said the reasons for the defeat of the MahaYuti will be reviewed.

"We have worked together in the past and we will keep on working in the future. Failures must not discourage us," said Shinde, who ousted Uddhav Thackeray from the Shiv Sena, with the support of most of the party MLAs and MPs in 2022.

Thackeray's faction of the Shiv Sena won nine seats in the Lok Sabha elections.

"If you look at the vote share, Mahayuti got more than two lakh votes in Mumbai," Shinde said.

He said the ruling coalition of BJP-Shiv Sena and NCP collectively failed to counter the opposition's misleading claims during the election campaign. "The false narrative that the constitution will be changed hurt us," he said.

Shinde said the opposition was chanting "Modi hatao" (remove Modi), but the voters kept them away from power.

Bansuri Swaraj, Sushma Swaraj's Daughter, Wins On Lok Sabha Debut

BJP's Bansuri Swaraj, daughter of the late Sushma Swaraj, won the New Delhi constituency on her Lok Sabha debut.

Ms Swaraj, fielded by the BJP in place of outgoing MP and Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi, trounced AAP's Somnath Bharti to win the seat by a margin of 78,370 votes.

The BJP won all seven seats in Delhi in the 2014 and the 2019 general elections, and repeated the feat yet again this time.

Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP, which rules the national capital, was in a 4:3 seat arrangement with the Congress as part of the INDIA bloc taking on the BJP.

The AAP that contested East Delhi, West Delhi, New Delhi and South Delhi seats could not win any seat. Its vote share, however, was 24.14 per cent as compared to 18.2 per cent in 2019 polls. The AAP's vote share was 33.1 per cent in 2014 general elections but it lost all seven seats that it contested.

The Congress that failed to win any seat out of three contested by it in Delhi, lost its vote share by over three per cent as compared to 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Probe Agency Attaches Assets Over Rs 115 Crore Of 2 Approvers In Delhi Liquor Policy Case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached assets worth more than Rs 115 crore of two of its approvers -- TDP's Lok Sabha poll candidate Magunta Sreenivasulu Reddy's businessman son Raghav Magunta and Aurobindo Pharma promoter Sarath Chandra Reddy -- in a money-laundering case linked to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam.

The agency made the disclosure in a chargesheet filed by it on May 10 against former Telangana chief minister and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Chandrashekar Rao's MLC daughter K Kavitha and four others. A special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court took cognisance of this prosecution complaint on May 29.

Both Raghav Magunta and Reddy are stated to be members of the so-called "south group" led by K Kavitha. The ED has charged that the group made a payment of Rs 100 crore to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to tweak the Delhi excise policy for 2021-22 in its favour. The policy was scrapped following charges of illegalities.

The AAP had alleged that the statements recorded by the Maguntas led to the arrest of its supremo and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on March 21 and that Reddy had paid Rs 55 crore to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) through electoral bonds, which proves that the saffron party has connection with the "south lobby".

A provisional order for attaching the assets of Raghav Magunta and Reddy under the PMLA was issued on May 3 and the value of the assets of the two are pegged at Rs 115,06,27,753 in the ED chargesheet accessed by PTI.

The ED has also said in the chargesheet that cash amounting to about Rs 64 crore was pumped in by the AAP for its Goa Assembly election campaign from the around Rs 100 crore "kickbacks" given to the party by the "south group".

The agency has said in the chargesheet that it is yet to send the original complaint of this order to the Adjudicating Authority of the PMLA for the confirmation of the provisional order.

This is the third attachment order issued by the ED in the case. It had earlier attached properties (worth more than Rs 52 crore) of former Delhi deputy chief minister and AAP leader Manish Sisodia and businessman Sameer Mahandru (worth more than Rs 76 crore).

The ED has "prayed for confiscation" of all the assets worth about Rs 244 crore, attached as part of the three orders, from the court and mentioned the same in the chargesheet filed against K Kavitha and four others.

Raghav Magunta and Reddy were arrested by the agency in the case and both were allowed to become approvers by the court last year.

Both are currently out on bail. Businessman Dinesh Arora is the third approver in the ED case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is also probing the case.

Raghav Magunta's father Magunta Sreenivasulu Reddy is the incumbent YSRCP MP from Ongole in Andhra Pradesh. He, however, contested this year's Lok Sabha polls from the seat on a Telugu Desam Party (TDP) ticket.

His fate will be known on Tuesday, when the votes polled for the general election are scheduled to be counted.

Meanwhile, K Kavitha, according to her statement furnished by the ED in the chargesheet, has denied all the allegations of bribery made against her in the excise policy case.

The ED has also charged her with destruction of evidence, alleging that there was "no data" in her FaceTime and WhatsApp apps, despite "her own disclosure that she uses" these utilities.

"When confronted with these facts, K Kavitha evaded the question and did not reply to the question put," the agency has said.

"The activity of generation and transfer were carried out by K Kavitha by being involved in the payment of Rs 100 crore kickbacks to the AAP leaders," it has alleged.

On Monday, Kavitha's judicial custody was extended by the court till July 3.

Raveena Tandon Was Not Drunk, False Complaint Filed: Mumbai Police

Mumbai Police on Sunday clarified that a false complaint was filed against actor Raveena Tandon with the Khar Police, accusing her of being drunk, rash driving and assault.

Ms Tandon shared a screenshot of a post from 'Viral Bhayani' on 'X' saying that the complainant filed a false complaint in the case and after checking the CCTV footage it was found that Raveena's car did not hit anyone and she was not drunk.

The post said that while speaking to a Mumbai-based daily, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Rajtilak Roshan of Zone 9 said that the complaint was false.

"The complainant gave a false complaint in the alleged video. We checked the entire CCTV footage of the society and found that the actress's driver was reversing the car from the road into the society when this family was crossing the same lane. The family stopped the car and told the driver that he should check if people were behind the car before reversing and an argument started between them," the DCP said while speaking to the daily.

When the argument got heated, Raveena came to the spot to check on her driver and tried to protect him from the mob. The duo went to the Khar police station to file complaints but subsequently withdrew them.

"This argument escalated into abusive language, and actress Raveena Tandon arrived at the spot to check what had happened with her driver. The actress tried to protect the driver from the mob; however, the mob started abusing her. Both Raveena Tandon and the family went to the Khar police station and gave written complaints. Later, they both also submitted letters stating they did not want to register any complaints," DCP Rajtilak Roshan explained.

DCP Rajtilak Roshan further stated, "Nobody was injured in this incident. We checked the CCTV footage, and the car did not hit anyone. The actress was not drunk."

In another screenshot shared by Raveena in the same post, the Mumbai Police was quoted in an online portal saying that both parties denied making any complaints.

"Tandon's driver was trying to reverse the car to park it, and three people from a family felt that they would get hit. After the argument, both parties left, and later, police reached the spot and questioned Tandon's staff. The other party was also called to the Police station. Both parties denied making any complaints," Mumbai Police was quoted as saying.

The post mentioned that the police statement came after the video of the incident went viral across social media platforms where Raveena Tandon is requesting people to calm down and can also be heard saying 'don't hit me.'

The video of the incident is doing rounds across social media platforms in which Raveena Tandon can be seen struggling around the people pushing her and wanting to beat her driver, it added.

There were accusations of her and her driver being drunk which were denied by Police as false allegations, it said.

A scuffle was reported outside actor Raveena Tandon's house last night when her driver was parking the car in the building premises.

According to the Mumbai Police, while the driver was reversing the car, a family was passing in front of the building's gate. Thinking that the car would hit them, a scuffle broke out between Raveena Tandon's driver and three women of the family over the issue.

Raveena came out of the house after she heard the arguments between her driver and the family However, after a lot of arguments, both parties left.

Upon getting information, when the police reached the spot, they questioned Raveena's staff and called both parties to Khar Police Station.

No one was injured in the incident nor did any vehicles collide, police said, adding no complaint has been filed by any side.

Meanwhile, on the work front, Raveena recently wowed the audiences with her compelling performance in the Disney Hotstar courtroom drama 'Patna Shuklla', alongside co-stars late Satish Kaushik and Manav Vij.

In the coming months, she will be seen in 'Welcome 3'. The star-studded cast includes Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi, Disha Patani, Lara Dutta, and Paresh Rawal.

Trump Says Sending Him To Prison Would Be "Breaking Point" For Supporters

Donald Trump has suggested that sending him to prison could prove a "breaking point" for his supporters -- a warning that will fuel concerns of political violence around the US presidential election on November 5.

In an interview aired Sunday on Fox News, the former president and current Republican White House hopeful acknowledged the possibility of jail time or house arrest following his historic criminal conviction in a hush money trial.

"I'm ok with it," Trump said, but added he was "not sure the public would stand for it."

"I think it would be tough for the public to take. You know at a certain point there's a breaking point," he said.

The warning will resonate in a country already concerned about the prospect of civil unrest and political harassment in the run-up to the November election.

Trump will now be running as a felon, and he has repeatedly refused to commit to accepting the result should he lose to President Joe Biden.

A New York jury on Thursday convicted Trump on all 34 felony charges of falsifying business records late in the 2016 presidential campaign to cover up a sex scandal involving adult film star Stormy Daniels.

It was the first criminal conviction of a former president in US history, and sentencing has been set for July 11 -- days before the Republican National Convention that will formally anoint Trump as the party's presidential nominee.

"They're turning Donald Trump into a martyr," Trump's son Eric told Fox News.

Although each charge carries a possible four-year jail term, experts say it is extremely unlikely the judge will hand down a custodial sentence.

Nevertheless Trump himself joined the stark call by fellow Republicans, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, for the US Supreme Court to somehow intervene in favor of the ex-president.

A "Local Judge, appointed by the Democrats, who is HIGHLY CONFLICTED, will make a decision which will determine the future of our Nation?" Trump said on his Truth Social media platform. "The United States Supreme Court MUST DECIDE!"

Trump has said his legal team will appeal the hush money verdict. Since it is a New York case, it would have to go through state appellate courts before it reaches the US Supreme Court.

Trump faces three other criminal trials, including one related to efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election he lost to Biden.

The 77-year-old's supporters stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 after he delivered a fiery speech urging the crowd to "fight like hell."

Democratic congressman Adam Schiff, a member of the House of Representatives committee that investigated the Capitol attack, said Trump's strategy was clear.

"This is essentially his threat that, if he gets jail time, that he's going to encourage his supporters to rise up," Schiff said on CNN's "State of the Union" program.

"And we saw the very deadly results of that on January 6."

'Vindicated'

Breaking her silence following Trump's conviction, Stormy Daniels told British media the ex-president should be incarcerated.

The former adult film actor helped bring Trump down in court with her gripping testimony, which included graphic descriptions of what she says was a casual sexual encounter in 2006.

Trump has continued to deny the sexual encounter, which prosecutors at his trial said occurred shortly after his wife Melania had given birth.

In his Fox interview, Trump said the trial had taken a toll on his wife, who was notably absent from the courtroom, unlike other close family members.

"She's fine, but I think it's very hard for her," Trump said. "She has to read all this crap."
