Summer Fatigue: Follow These 5 Tips To Boost Energy Levels

It is not uncommon to feel lethargic and sleepy during the summer season. It is often known as summer fatigue. Other than exhaustion, one might also experience dry lips, low blood pressure, muscle cramps and extreme tiredness. Summer fatigue can affect your efficiency in performing day-to-day activities.

Excessive heat and long daytime in summer affect melatonin, the sleep hormone. Poor sleep cycle makes you lethargic and sleepy more often. Additionally, dehydration in summer also triggers lethargy, fatigue, muscle weakness and dizziness. As the ongoing heatwave is affecting several parts of the country, here we have some tips that can help you effectively beat summer fatigue.

Tips to manage summer fatigue

1. Hydrate

Your body needs optimal hydration to function properly. During summer, you are more likely to get dehydrated which can contribute to dizziness and fatigue. Therefore, drinking enough fluids throughout the day is of utmost importance.

2. Eat light

Consumption of heavy meals can also cause fatigue. You are also more likely to feel tired after eating. The digestion process also slows down during the summer season. Therefore, small, light meals are suitable for your overall well-being as well as your digestive system.

3. Fix your sleep cycle

A healthy sleep schedule is also essential to maintain energy levels during the day. Not just your energy levels, sleeplessness also affects your mood, appetite and much more. Ensure good 8 hours of sleep every night.

4. Limit caffeine intake

Caffeine instantly boosts energy levels for a short period. However, it may deplete your energy levels for the rest of the day.

Skip coffee and choose the right beverages to fuel your body such as buttermilk, coconut water, sugarcane juice and more.

5. Exercise

Irrespective of the weather conditions, it is essential to stay physically active. Regular exercise can keep you fit, ensure better sleep and boost energy levels. During the summer season, choose low-intensity workouts.

"Attempt Made To Portray Me As Villain": Swati Maliwal Hits Out At AAP

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Swati Maliwal hit out at the party on Friday alleging that an attempt was made to portray her as a "villain" and Delhi Chief Minister's aide Bibhav Kumar as a "hero" after she made assault allegations against him.

"I am very hurt and saddened by the behaviour of Arvind Kejriwal. I and my entire family are in trauma because I have been working since 2006. I have been working since I had no position or prestige. There were no governments in the two states then. I have been working since then, with passion, selflessness, and honesty," AAP leader Ms Maliwal told ANI.

Ms Maliwal alleged victim-shaming by the party adding that her character was "maligned" and she was left "alone in the entire battle."

"But the truth is that when I was being beaten badly....in Arvind Kejriwal's drawing room, he did not come. No one came to save me. And an out-of-court trial was conducted in which I was declared guilty. To date, he neither rang me nor came to meet me and he has not helped me anywhere. The entire party and he are standing with Bibhav Kumar at this time. So in such a situation, I am very sad because Arvind Kejriwal, who expresses his views on every issue, did not consider it necessary to support me on my issue, to take a stand for me, or to talk about my issue," she said.

"Bibhav Kumar beat me up very badly in Arvind Kejriwal's drawing room, and as soon as I filed a complaint in this matter, the entire party's resources and leadership were used against me. Every day I was victim-shamed, my character was maligned," she told ANI on Friday.

She further pointed out that Bibhav Kumar accompanied Kejriwal during his visit to Lucknow and Amritsar for campaigning in Lok Sabha polls.

"As soon as Delhi Police arrested Bibhav Kumar, Arvind Kejriwal himself and the entire party took to the streets to protest against his arrest. An attempt was made to portray that he is the hero and I am the villain," the AAP MP said.

Ms Maliwal expressed confidence in the judiciary in the matter and said, "Today I have been left alone in this entire battle just because I have filed a complaint against Bibhav Kumar. I am fighting this battle alone and I will continue to fight till the end. Because I know that what I have said is the complete truth. In this entire battle, my only hope is from the court for justice."

Earlier in the day, Delhi's Tiz Hazari court remanded Bibhav Kumar in 14-day judicial custody in connection with the alleged assault on Ms Maliwal.

Mr Kumar was produced before the court after the three-day police custody granted on May 28 ended on Friday. He was arrested by the Delhi Police on May 18, in connection with the case.

Ms Maliwal lodged a complaint with the Delhi police against Bibhav Kumar on May 14, a day after the alleged assault took place. A day later, Bibhav Kumar lodged a counter-complaint with the police, accusing Ms Maliwal of gaining 'unauthorised entry' into the CM's Civil Lines residence and 'verbally abusing' him.

A case was filed against Bibhav Kumar and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to investigate the case based on Ms Maliwal's complaint. Bibhav was arrested by the Delhi Police on May 19.

Juvenile Board Allows Pune Cops To Investigate Minor In Porsche Case

The Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) here on Friday allowed police to investigate the minor allegedly involved in the Porsche crash that left two techies dead, an official said.

The police had written to the JJB seeking permission to probe the 17-year-old, who is currently in an observation home.

"The hearing took place before the JJ board and it allowed our plea," said Shailesh Balkawade, Additional Commissioner of Police (crime).

Police claim the teenager was driving the luxury car in an inebriated state when it hit two IT professionals on a motorbike in the city's Kalyani Nagar area in the early hours of May 19.

Under the Juvenile Justice Act, inquiry of a minor has to be conducted in the parents' presence.

The JJB granted bail to the teenager, son of a prominent real estate developer, a few hours after the May 19 crash and asked him to write a 300-word essay on road safety. Amid a nationwide outcry, police again approached the JJB, which modified the order and sent him to the observation home till June 5.

After the bail was given to the juvenile by a single member of the JJ Board, the Maharashtra government set up a committee to probe the conduct of the JJB members and check if norms were followed while issuing orders in the Pune car crash case.

The committee, headed by a deputy commissioner, will submit its report by next week, said Prashant Narnavare, commissioner of the Women and Child Department.

The JJB comprises a member from the judiciary and two persons appointed by the state government. The current inquiry has been set up to probe the conduct of the state-appointed members, the official said.

The minor's father and grandfather have been arrested for allegedly wrongfully confining the family's driver after the accident, offering him cash and gifts for taking the blame (and shielding the minor), and also threatening him.

The police have also arrested two doctors and a staffer from Sassoon General Hospital here for allegedly manipulating the teenager's blood samples to show that he was not drunk at the time of the accident.

Police on Friday moved an application for custody of the teenager's father in connection with the alleged switching of the blood samples. Earlier in the day, Judicial Magistrate (First Class) AA Pande remanded the real estate developer and his father (the minor's grandfather) in judicial custody for 14 days after their police custody in the driver kidnapping case got over.

As per the police, about a dozen calls were exchanged between the juvenile's father and Dr Ajay Taware, one of the arrested doctors, while samples were being collected for testing for alcohol consumption.

3 Killed, 33 Injured In Firecracker Explosion During Puri's Jagannath Festival: Cops

At least three persons, including a minor, died and 33 others were injured after a stockpile of firecrackers exploded during Lord Jagannath's Chandan Jatra festival in Odisha's Puri, police said on Thursday.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik ordered an administrative-level inquiry into the firecracker explosion that occurred on Wednesday night and announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the family of each victim.

According to a statement issued by the chief minister's office (CMO), the inquiry will be conducted by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department's additional chief secretary, who is also the special relief commissioner.

"One boy succumbed to his injuries at SCB Medical College in Cuttack and two others died while undergoing treatment in private hospitals in Bhubaneswar," a senior officer said.

Hundreds of people had gathered on the banks of Narendra Pushkarinee, a water body, to witness the rituals of Lord Jagannath's Chandan Jatra and some devotees were celebrating the festival by bursting firecrackers. Suddenly, a splinter from the burning crackers struck the stockpile, leading to the explosion, Puri Superintendent of Police Pinak Mishra said.

The chief minister visited a private hospital here to meet the injured persons on Thursday morning.

He talked to doctors of the health facility and advised them to provide the best treatment to the injured persons who are undergoing treatment there.

Later, the chief minister wished speedy recovery of the injured and met their family members.

Odisha Chief Secretary Pradeep Kumar Jena, Khurda Collector Chanchal Rana and Health Secretary Shalini Pandit visited various hospitals late Wednesday night to supervise the treatment of the injured people.

"Of 36 patients admitted to various hospitals, six have been discharged after treatment, three declared dead and 27 under treatment," Jena said on X.

The injured people were admitted to nine private and government hospitals in Puri, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, the health secretary said.

"Several teams of doctors are trying their best to save the lives of the injured people. As the first 48-hour period is critical for such cases, we are monitoring their health condition," Pandit told reporters this morning.

She said the state government is bearing the treatment cost of all those injured in the accident.

"We have received eight patients from Puri. Of them, one was brought dead, two others had 100 per cent burn injuries and another was admitted with 65 per cent burn injuries. They are under treatment at the plastic surgery department. The four other patients have minor burn injuries and are admitted to the general surgery ward," SCB Medical College and Hospital Superintendent Sudhansu Sekhar Mishra said.

The Puri superintendent of police said, "We have registered a suo-motu criminal case and an investigation is underway. We have collected scientific and physical evidence from the spot." During Lord Jagannath's Chandan Jatra festival, the firecrackers were burst without any permission from the authorities, he said.

"Whoever is found guilty, legal action will be taken against him," the Puri SP said.

Puri collector Siddharth Shankar Swain said that the person, who was bursting the firecrackers at the festival, was also seriously injured and undergoing treatment in the ICU of a hospital.

3 Dead, 17 Injured As Heavy Rain, Storms Pound Assam

Three persons, including a woman, were killed and 17 others injured in separate incidents in Assam on Tuesday as heavy rain accompanied by strong winds lashed the state in the aftermath of cyclone Remal, officials said.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the inclement weather is likely to continue.

A 60-year-old woman, identified as Labanya Kumari, was injured when a tree fell on her in Kamrup district. She later died in Gauhati Medical College Hospital.

Another person, Putul Gogoi, died in a landslide caused by incessant rain at the under-construction NHPC's Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power project at Gerukamukh in Lakhimpur district, officials said.

Kausik Bordoloi Amphi, a 17-year-old college student, was killed when a tree fell on an auto-rickshaw in which he was travelling at Dighalbori in Morigaon district. Four other people in the vehicle were injured.

In Sonitpur district's Dhekiajuli, a tree fell on a school bus injuring 12 children. They were admitted to a local hospital.

The chief minister, who is campaigning in Odisha, asked Chief Secretary Ravi Kota to assess the situation.

He also directed that relief and rehabilitation mechanisms be closely monitored and precautionary measures be taken, an official release said.

"I have instructed officials to be alert to respond to exigencies at the earliest. Request citizens not to venture out unless there is an emergency and be safe. We are constantly monitoring the situation," Sarma posted on X.

Reports of uprooted trees and damaged houses and power infrastructure came from across the state with the disaster response force, fire service, police, health and forest officials being engaged in restorative efforts.

Flash floods have been reported in parts of Karimganj district, prompting the district administration to remain on high alert.

An orange alert (implying 'be prepared for action') has been issued in Dhubri, South Salmara, Bajali, Barpeta, and Nalbari, while a red alert is in effect for Chirang, Goalpara, Baksa, Tamulpur, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Karimganj with schools and educational institutions remaining closed till May 29.

A yellow alert ('watch and be updated') has been issued for the remaining districts for May 28 and 29.

Sarma has expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and directed the chief secretary to ensure all assistance to the affected families and timely treatment for the injured.

The chief secretary instructed the District Commissioners to personally inspect busy passenger ferry ghats across the state to ensure that all precautionary measures are taken.

Ferry services were stopped in Guwahati, Jorhat, Tezpur, Morigaon, Dhubri, Goalpara, South Salmara, Barpeta, Cachar and Karimganj districts.

In the last 24 hours, 14 districts have reported storm and heavy rainfall, according to a report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

Details of the population affected and damages caused by storms and rains were under assessment.

In the severely affected Dima Hasao district, road communication between Haflong and Cachar was affected with restrictions imposed on traffic in the Jatinga-Harangajao stretch. All heavy vehicles on the way to Barak Valley were asked to go through Meghalaya, officials added.

''Incessant rains and stormy winds have caused landslides in Kapircherrra (NH-27, Haflong to Silchar) and ThereBasati (Umrangso-Dehangi Road). Traffic is disrupted and restricted. A BSNL tower in Haflong is badly damaged, and evacuation efforts are underway. We are closely monitoring the situation,'' Sarma posted on X.

Trees were uprooted in several places across the state, including Guwahati, because of the strong winds.

Power supply was disrupted in lower Assam as electric poles fell, and water-logging was reported from different towns, officials said.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned of extremely heavy rainfall across the state as an impact of the cyclone.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority asked people to avoid staying in vulnerable structures and going to water-logged areas. It also urged people to stock on essential items and contact authorities in case of an emergency. PTI DG NN

In A First, Indian Haj Pilgrims Travel From Jeddah To Mecca By High-Speed Train

In a historic first, Indian Haj pilgrims, who arrived at the Jeddah airport on Sunday, travelled to Mecca by high-speed Haramain Train instead of buses.

The arrangement, which will make the journey of the pilgrims more comfortable, has been facilitated by India's Consulate General in Jeddah in coordination with the concerned Saudi authorities.

The Ambassador of India to Saudi Arabia Suhel Ajaz Khan and Consul General Shahid Alam accompanied by the Vice President of Saudi Arabian Railways, Al Harbi and other officials from the Ministry of Haj and Ministry of Transport, escorted the Indian Haj pilgrims from Jeddah Airport to Mecca on first such journey on the High-Speed Train on Sunday.

With the highest speed of the train being 300 km per hour, the journey will also reduce the travel time from Jeddah to Mecca considerably.

It is estimated that about 32,000 Indian Haj pilgrims will use the exclusive service this year.

The Indian Haj Mission - the biggest operation of its kind handled by the Indian government outside the country's borders, has closely coordinated logistics with the concerned Saudi authorities to make the new initiative a success.

"Not Preventing Us From...": Israel On Top UN Court's Order On Rafah

Israel considers that an order by the World Court to halt its military offensive on Rafah in southern Gaza allows room for some military action there, Israeli officials said.

In an emergency ruling in South Africa's case accusing Israel of genocide, judges at the International Court of Justice ordered Israel on Friday to immediately halt its assault on Rafah, where Israel says it is rooting out Hamas fighters.

"What they are asking us, is not to commit genocide in Rafah. We did not commit genocide and we will not commit genocide," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's national security adviser, Tzachi Hanegbi, told Israel's N12 TV on Saturday.

Asked whether the Rafah offensive would continue, Hanegbi said: "According to international law, we have the right to defend ourselves and the evidence is that the court is not preventing us from continuing to defend ourselves."

The ICJ, which is based in The Hague, did not immediately comment on Hanegbi's remarks. Hamas also did not immediately comment.

Another Israeli official pointed to the phrasing of the ruling by the ICJ, or World Court, depicting it as conditional.

"The order in regard to the Rafah operation is not a general order," the official said on condition of anonymity.

Reading out the ruling, the ICJ's president, Nawaf Salam, said the situation in Gaza had deteriorated since the court last ordered Israel to take steps to improve it, and conditions had been met for a new emergency order.

"The state of Israel shall (...) immediately halt its military offensive, and any other action in the Rafah governorate, which may inflict on the Palestinian group in Gaza conditions of life that could bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part," Salam said.

That wording does not rule out all military action, the Israeli official said.

"We have never, and we will not, conduct any military action in Rafah or elsewhere which may inflict any conditions of life to bring about the destruction of the civilian population in Gaza, not in whole and not in part," the official said.

While the court has no means to enforce its orders, the case is a sign of Israel's growing diplomatic isolation over its campaign against Palestinian armed group Hamas in Gaza.

Israel began its offensive in Gaza to try to eliminate Hamas after the group stormed into southern Israeli communities on Oct. 7 last year. It has pressed on with its offensive since the ICJ ruling.

Nearly 36,000 Palestinians have been killed in the offensive, Gaza's health ministry says, and much of Gaza has been devastated. About 1,200 people were killed and more than 250 taken hostage on Oct. 7, according to Israeli tallies.

Woman's Unique Protest To Flag Poor Condition Of Roads In Hyderabad

In a unique protest to highlight the poor condition of roads in the city, a woman in Hyderabad sat in a pothole filled with muddy water on Thursday.

The woman, a resident of Anandnagar Colony in Nagole, staged the protest on Thursday to draw the attention of the municipal authorities to the problems faced by the people due to potholes on the road.

Vexed with the failure of the municipal authorities to respond to her pleas to fill the potholes, the woman sat in a pothole filled with muddy water.

The woman claimed that her children suffered injuries after falling into potholes, adding that the stretch from Nagole to Uppal has as many as 30 potholes.

"Where is our road tax and municipal tax," read a placard she was holding.

A couple of residents from the area also joined her in highlighting the problem.

She said instead of silently suffering, people should join her in the protest.

She also said that her repeated requests to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to fill the potholes failed to yield any response.

Later, a couple of traffic police officers persuaded the woman to end her protest.

She told mediapersons later that the local corporator facilitated a telephonic conversation between her and the municipal commissioner, who told her that a budget has been allocated (to resolve the issue).

She, however, said that no deadline was given to solve the problem.

Trump Says FBI Warrant Shows Biden Wanted Armed Agents To Shoot Him

Donald Trump drew disbelief -- and some support -- Wednesday after suggesting that standard language from an FBI search warrant executed in 2022 on his Florida mansion showed that President Joe Biden wanted armed agents to shoot him.

Trump's latest incendiary claim was in response to a court filing outlining plans for the FBI search at the Mar-a-Lago club, where he kept classified national security documents after leaving the White House.

The filing included standard FBI wording stating that agents are allowed to use deadly force if someone is in imminent danger.

But Trump, who is running to unseat Biden in November's election, distorted the statement to say that it showed the Justice Department was ready to shoot him and harm his family.

"It's just been revealed that Biden's DOJ was authorized to use DEADLY FORCE for their DESPICABLE raid in Mar-a-Lago. You know they're just itching to do the unthinkable," Trump said Tuesday in a fundraising email shared by US media.

"Joe Biden was locked & loaded ready to take me out & put my family in danger. He thinks he can frighten me, intimidate me, and KNOCK ME DOWN!"

The wild remarks add to the pile of false claims made by Trump against Biden, whom he has repeatedly accused without evidence of weaponizing the justice system to target him.

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called for all lawmakers to condemn Trump's "outlandish and dangerous" remarks in a speech in the upper chamber of Congress.

"We cannot let this man, Donald Trump, or anybody else, throw these kinds of matches to light flames that could burn our democracy," he said.

David Axelrod, a White House aide under Barack Obama, called Trump's comments "patently nuts...and dangerously provocative" in a post on X.

But several of Trump's staunchest allies joined Trump in misrepresenting the court filing.

Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene posted on X that the Justice Department and the FBI "gave the green light" to assassinate Trump.

On the day of the raid, Trump was not on Florida but at his Bedminster golf club in New Jersey.

The FBI issued a rare statement, saying "there was no departure from the norm in this matter."

The bureau -- which recovered more than 100 classified documents, including some marked top secret -- got the go-ahead for the raid from a federal judge after the government tried for months to get the records back.

The billionaire is accused of willfully retaining national defense information and obstructing government efforts to recover it.

He denies 40 felony charges, but the trial has been indefinitely postponed.

In a statement to AFP, the Trump campaign said reporting of the fundraising email was "a sickening attempt to run cover for Joe Biden who is the most corrupt president in history and a threat to our democracy."

CCTV Shows Man Writing Graffiti In Metro Targeting Arvind Kejriwal: Cops

The Delhi Police probing the graffiti incident targeting Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday said a man has been captured in CCTV cameras scribbling the messages.

The police on Monday registered an FIR and started a probe after graffiti bearing the AAP national convenor's name was found scribbled inside metro trains and at stations.

"A young man is caught writing on the signboards and coaches in the CCTV footage. He is suspected to be the same man who had shared the photographs of the graffiti on his Instagram account," an officer said.

He said the police collected the footage from the Patel Nagar, Ramesh Nagar and Rajiv Chowk metro stations on Tuesday.

The police officer said pictures of certain messages scribbled inside metro trains and at stations were shared through the Instagram account "ankit.goel_91".

One of the graffiti inside a metro train read, "Kejriwal Dilli Chhor Dijiye (Kejriwal, leave Delhi). Please. Otherwise, you will have to remember three slaps, which you planted (sic) before the election. Now the real and actual punch/slap will be there soon. Today's meeting at Jhandewalan.... Ankit.Goel_91" The officer said the person, Ankit Goel, whose Instagram account has been used for sharing the pictures of the graffiti, is being searched.

It is suspected Goel scribbled the graffiti and posted pictures of those on his account for fame but the actual reason will be known once he is interrogated, the officer added.

The Aam Aadmi Party on Monday accused the BJP of being behind the graffiti and sought time from the Election Commission for a meeting on the issue.

UK's Infected Blood Scandal That Killed 3,000 Was Covered Up: Report

A decades-long UK scandal in which thousands of people died after being treated with infected blood was covered up and largely could have been avoided, according to a bombshell report published Monday.

More than 30,000 people were infected with viruses such as HIV and hepatitis after being given contaminated blood in Britain between the 1970s and early 1990s, the Infected Blood Inquiry concluded.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday said he was "truly sorry" for the decades-long institutional cover-up that saw thousands of people receive infected blood products. "I want to make a wholehearted and unequivocal apology for this terrible injustice," he told MPs, promising to pay "whatever it costs" to compensate those affected and the families of victims who died.

Victims included those needing blood transfusions for accidents and in surgery, and those suffering from blood disorders such as haemophilia who were treated with donated blood plasma products.

Some 3,000 of them died, and more will follow, in what has been described as the biggest treatment disaster in the eight-decade history of the state-run National Health Service (NHS).

In some instances, children with bleeding disorders were treated as "objects for research". Many went on to develop and die from HIV and hepatitis.

The long-awaited report, running to more than 2,500 pages, laid bare a "catalogue of failures" with "catastrophic" consequences for victims and their loved ones.

"I have to report that it could largely, though not entirely, have been avoided," concluded its author, judge Brian Langstaff.

His team found that successive governments and health professionals failed to mitigate risks despite it being apparent by the early 1980s that the cause of AIDS could be transmitted by blood.

Blood donors were not screened properly and blood products were imported from abroad, including from the United States where drug users and prisoners were used for donations.

Too many transfusions were also given when they were not necessarily needed, the report added.

There were even attempts to conceal the scandal, including evidence that officials in the health department destroyed documents in 1993.

"Viewing the response of the NHS and of government overall, the answer to the question, 'Was there a cover-up?' is that there has been," the report stated.

"Not in the sense of a handful of people plotting in an orchestrated conspiracy to mislead, but in a way that was more subtle, more pervasive and more chilling in its implications.

- 'Vindicated' -

"In this way there has been a hiding of much of the truth," it added.

On top of the 3,000 who died, many more were left with lifelong health problems.

Langstaff said that "the scale of what happened is horrifying" and said people's suffering had been compounded by repeated denials and false assurances that they had received good treatment.

When victims were told the truth, sometimes years later, this was sometimes done in "insensitive" and "inappropriate" ways.

"What I have found is that disaster was no accident. People put their trust in doctors and the government to keep them safe and that trust was betrayed," Langstaff told reporters.

He recommended that victims now received compensation. The government is expected to announced a package worth about 10 billion pounds (12 billion dollars) on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is expected to express regret when he speaks in parliament later on Monday.

Speaking ahead of the inquiry, a government spokesman said: "This was an appalling tragedy that never should have happened. We are clear that justice needs to be done and swiftly."

Former prime minister Theresa May launched the inquiry -- one of the country's largest -- in 2017.

Campaigners hailed the report as the culmination of a decades-long struggle but noted that it came too late for many of the victims who will never see justice.

Andy Evans, chairman of the Tainted Blood campaign group, described the report as "momentous" and that he felt "validated and vindicated".

"We have been gaslit for generations... Sometimes we felt like we were shouting into the wind during the last 40 years," he told reporters.

Unrelenting Heatwave Disrupts Daily Life, Severe Warning For Delhi, Bihar

The unrelenting heat turned daily activities into an arduous task in large parts of India on Sunday, with Najafgarh in southwest Delhi reaching a sweltering 47.8 degrees Celsius -- the highest in the country so far this season.

The crippling heat strained low-income households, which often have poor access to water and cooling, and tested the endurance of outdoor workers toiling in the searing sun, forcing them to take frequent breaks.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported a severe heat wave in parts of Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.

Even the hill stations in Himachal Pradesh, safe havens for people escaping the punishing heat in the plains, reeled from the scorching conditions.

Maximum temperatures reached 36 degrees Celsius in Dharamshala, 44.4 degrees in Una, 42.4 degrees in Bilaspur, 36.6 degrees in Solan and 40 degrees in Kangra.

The Met office has issued a red warning for Delhi, Chandigarh, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan, stressing the need for "extreme care for vulnerable people". An orange alert was issued for Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Gujarat, emphasising "high health concern" for vulnerable people, including infants, the elderly, and those with chronic diseases.

The mercury reached or surpassed 47 degrees Celsius in at least eight places across India, with Najafgarh logging a searing 47.8 degrees, making it the warmest place in the country for the second time in the last three days.

In the national capital, Pitampura recorded 47 degrees Celsius and Mungeshpur 47.7 degrees, at least seven notches above the usual temperature for these areas at this time of the year.

According to a new analysis of airport site weather data, Delhi reached or surpassed 40 degrees Celsius on 1,557 days (around 43 per cent) in the last 10 years.

The densely packed city recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius on 1,254 days (around 34 per cent) during 2004-2013 and 1,180 days (around 32 per cent) during 1994-2003, according to the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED).

In Rajasthan, the mercury soared to 46.7 degrees Celsius in Sriganganagar and Anta, 46.6 degrees in Churu, 46.5 degrees in Dholpur and Jalore, 46.2 degrees in Kota, 46.1 degrees in Pilani (Jhunjhunu) and Karauli, 45.9 degrees in Jaipur, 45.8 degrees in Barmer and Phalodi, 45.6 degrees in Jodhpur and 45.5 degrees in Jaisalmer.

Nuh in Haryana recorded a blistering high of 47.2 degrees Celsius on Sunday, while Sirsa sizzled at 47 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature was recorded at 45.6 degrees Celsius in Hisar, 46 degrees Celsius in Mahendragarh, 45.2 degrees Celsius in Rohtak, 45.1 degrees Celsius in Gurugram, 46.1 degrees Celsius in Jhajjar, 43.8 degrees Celsius in Ambala and 44 degrees Celsius in Bhiwani.

Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab and Haryana, recorded a high of 44.2 degrees Celsius.

In Punjab, Amritsar recorded a maximum temperature of 43.9 degrees Celsius while Faridkot recorded a high of 44 degrees Celsius. The mercury settled at 45 degrees Celsius in Patiala and 44.2 degrees Celsius in Ludhiana. Gurdaspur recorded a high of 43.5 degrees while Mohali registered a maximum of 43.4 degrees. Pathankot's maximum settled at 44.6 degrees Celsius, while Bathinda recorded 47.7 degrees.

Madhya Pradesh's Datia saw 47.5 degrees, while in Uttar Pradesh, Agra recorded 47.7 degrees and Jhansi recorded 47.2 degrees.

High heat and humidity also troubled residents in coastal areas of Gujarat.

The IMD, in its bulletin on Sunday, predicted heatwave conditions for the next five days in many parts of north India.

Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are very likely in many pockets of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi from Monday to Thursday.

In west Rajasthan, heatwave to severe heatwave conditions could be seen on May 21-23, while in Rajasthan it will be seen on May 22-23.

In western UP, heatwave conditions could be observed from May 19-21 while in eastern UP, they may be seen on May 19-20.

The threshold for a heatwave is met when the maximum temperature of a weather station reaches at least 40 degrees Celsius in the plains, 37 degrees in the coastal areas, and 30 degrees in the hilly regions, and the departure from normal is at least 4.5 notches.

A severe heatwave is declared if the departure from normal exceeds 6.4 notches.

Anna Walnycki, a principal researcher on IIED's human settlements team, said the alarming rise in extreme heat events in India due to climate change is significantly impacting the health, wellbeing and productivity of everyone, especially those living in low-income and informal communities.

"Low-income households have limited capacity to adapt to extreme heat because of poor access to water and electricity. In addition, the design and construction of informal houses often mean there is poor ventilation and little shelter from extreme heat," she said.

Chandni Singh, senior researcher at the Indian Institute for Human Settlements and IPCC lead author, said state and city-level heat action plans are proving "insufficient to deal with the heat we are now experiencing." In urban areas, Singh noted, the experience of heat depends on factors such as residential location, occupation, and access to cooling.

Explained: How Might A US-Saudi Civil Nuclear Deal Work

White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan will visit Saudi Arabia this weekend for talks expected to touch on a civil nuclear cooperation agreement, one piece of a wider arrangement Washington hopes will lead to normalization of Israeli-Saudi relations.

Below is a description of the key issues involved in a US-Saudi civil nuclear deal, what risks and benefits it may offer the United States and Saudi Arabia, and how it fits within US efforts to broker Israeli-Saudi reconciliation.

What is a civil nuclear coorperation agreement?

Under Section 123 of the US Atomic Energy Act of 1954, the United States may negotiate agreements to engage in significant civil nuclear cooperation with other nations.

It specifies nine nonproliferation criteria those states must meet to keep them from using the technology to develop nuclear arms or transfer sensitive materials to others.

The law stipulates congressional review of such pacts.

Why does Saudi Arabia want a US nuclear cooperation agreement?

As the world's largest oil exporter, Saudi Arabia at first glance is not an obvious candidate for a nuclear pact typically aimed at building power plants to generate electricity.

There are two reasons Riyadh may wish to do so.

The first is that under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's ambitious Vision 2030 reform plan, the kingdom aims to generate substantial renewable energy and reduce emissions. At least some of this is expected to come from nuclear energy.

Critics cite a second potential reason: that Riyadh might wish to develop nuclear expertise in case it someday wished to acquire nuclear weapons despite the safeguards enshrined in any deal with Washington to prevent this.

The Saudi crown prince has long said that if Iran developed a nuclear weapon, Saudi Arabia would follow suit, a stance that has fueled deep concern among arms control advocates and some US lawmakers over a possible US-Saudi civil nuclear deal.

The Sunni Muslim kingdom and Shi'ite revolutionary Iran have been at odds for decades.

How would the US benefit from a civil nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia?

There could be strategic and commercial gains.

The Biden administration has made no secret of its hope to broker a long-shot, multi-part arrangement leading Saudi Arabia and Israel to normalize relations. It believes Saudi support for normalization may hinge partly on striking a civil nuclear deal.

The strategic benefits would be to shore up Israel's security, build a wider coalition against Iran and reinforce US ties to one of the wealthiest Arab nations at a time when China is seeking to extend its influence in the Gulf.

The commercial benefit would be to put US industry in a prime spot to win contracts to build Saudi nuclear power plants, as US atomic companies compete with Russia, China and other countries for global business.

What are the hurdles to a US-Saudi civil nuclear deal?

To start, it is all but inconceivable while the Gaza war rages.

Israel invaded the Gaza Strip after Hamas-led gunmen on Oct. 7 attacked southern Israeli communities, killing about 1,200 people and taking 253 hostages, according to Israeli figures.

The Gaza death count, health officials in the Hamas-run coastal enclave say, has risen to more than 35,000 and malnutrition is widespread.

It is hard to imagine the Saudis being willing to normalize relations while Palestinians are dying in such numbers.

What is the wider pact in which a nuclear deal might figure?

The United States hopes to find a way to give Saudi Arabia several things it wants - a civil nuclear pact, security guarantees and a pathway toward a Palestinian state - in return for Riyadh agreeing to normalize relations with Israel.

Earlier this month, seven people familiar with the matter told Reuters the Biden administration and Saudi Arabia were finalizing an agreement  for US security guarantees and civilian nuclear assistance to Riyadh.

However, the wider Israel-Saudi normalization envisaged as part of a Middle East "grand bargain" remains elusive.

What are some of the key issues to be worked out in a Saudi-US nuclear deal

A key issue is whether Washington might agree to build a uranium enrichment facility on Saudi territory, when it might do so, and whether Saudi personnel might have access to it or it would be run solely by US staff in a "black box" arrangement.

Without safeguards built into an agreement, Saudi Arabia, which has uranium ore, could theoretically use an enrichment facility to produce highly enriched uranium, which, if purified enough, can yield fissile material for bombs.

Another issue is whether Riyadh would agree to make a Saudi investment in a US-based and US-owned uranium enrichment plant and to hire US companies to build Saudi nuclear reactors.

"Stumped": Bengaluru Police's Meme On Man Who Wanted To Breach IPL Security

A content creator on Instagram set a dare for himself that he would run across the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru during an IPL match if he hit 50,00 followers on Instagram.

The challenge caught the attention of Bengaluru cops and was put into preventive detention. Nitin Seqeuria, a content creator, had challenged that on May 18, he would run across the Chinnaswamy Stadium during an IPL match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings.

The content creator's challenge could have resulted in a security breach since access to the ground is out of bounds for visitors except for players and authorised ground staff. The catch was that he'd run across the ground the stadium if he hit 50,000 by April 9, giving him three months for it.

The man said he made several calls and through networking, he got access to the stands from where it would be easy to cross the security barrier and enter the ground. The Bengaluru Police shared his video on social media platform X and said, "Nice try, Buddy! But attempting to breach security during IPL is a guaranteed six straight into our custody. Sorry, mate, you're stumped!"

The failed challenge landed him in prevention detention by the Cubbon Park Police after the video went viral.

RCB is playing CSK at Chinnaswamy today in a do-or-die match to qualify for the knockouts. RCB, which started the tournament with a poor performance, bounced back and has to defeat CSK to secure its place in the top four.

Calcutta High Court Orders Release Of BJP Leader Arrested In Sandeshkhali 'Sting' Case

In a blow to the West Bengal government, the Calcutta High Court on Friday ordered the release of a woman BJP leader from Sandeshkhali, Mampi Das who was arrested after a sting operation video went viral in which a BJP leader stated that the women's protest was plotted and orchestrated by the BJP and Das played a key role in it.

While raising questions on the justification for the arrest, the single-judge Bench of Justice Jay Sengupta also questioned who was behind the police action.

Justice Sengupta ordered that Das be released on a personal bond and put a stay on Section 195A (punishment for threatening to give false evidence) of the Indian Penal Code imposed on her.

The next hearing on the matter will be on June 19.

He also observed how Ms Das was arrested. Stating that there were clear directions of the Supreme Court on the use of Section 195A, a non-bailable offence, he observed that if not the Calcutta High Court, the state government and police should at least go by the directions of the Supreme Court.

He also questioned the order of the Judicial Magistrate who ordered the arrest of Das in the matter. "Who is the Investigating Officer in this case and who is the mastermind?" he questioned.

He also questioned how the lower court ordered police custody for Das without examining the Case Diary.

The BJP's state spokesman Samik Bhattacharya said, "Since the beginning, we had been saying that Mampi's arrest was a part of a bigger conspiracy."

Lok Sabha Polls 2024: Nomination Of Independent Candidate From UP's Gorakhpur Cancelled

The nomination of independent candidate Rajan Yadav alias Arthi Baba has been cancelled from the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat.

During the scrutiny, supervised by Returning Officer Krishna Karunesh, who is also the District Magistrate, 19 nomination papers, including that of Mr Yadav, were cancelled.

Mr Yadav, who arrived on a bier at the collectorate office here on Tuesday to file his nomination, said he will sit on a bier at Jantar Mantar in Delhi to protest against the policies of the Election Commission.

"At the time of filing my nomination on May 14, I asked the officials present there about the rules and they said that all columns should be filled properly. I adhered to their instructions yet my nomination was cancelled," he said.

Mr Yadav added that he has not received any official information about the cancellation yet and only heard about it from some media personnel on Wednesday evening.

He said the filing of nomination papers should be made online as the present process is very tedious.

Mr Yadav also criticised the practice of making the assets of candidates public, saying he finds it intimidating, especially, due to his weak financial background.

He claimed that even in 2014, when he filed his nomination against BJP senior leader and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Lucknow, it was cancelled.

Mr Yadav said that he plans to contest against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the 2025 Delhi assembly elections.

He said he has done an MBA but is now a Buddhist monk and is living on alms. He has unsuccessfully contested elections in the past too.

Mr Yadav said he has opened his election office at a cremation ground and wants to take up issues affecting the common man like vehicle fines under the new Motor Vehicles Act, which he wants revoked.

"Where will an unemployed labourer get the money to pay such hefty fines," he said.

He also said that the facility of lifetime incoming calls "that has been discontinued on mobile phones should be restarted".

Yadav said he decided to remain unmarried as he wanted to devote his life to protecting democracy in the country.

Election to the high-profile Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat, a stronghold of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, will be held in the last phase on June 1.

A Look At Major Cases Keeping Ex Pakistan PM Imran Khan In Jail

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan was granted bail in a land corruption case on Wednesday, but will remain in prison on other charges.

The 71-year-old former cricket star who has been in jail since August last year has been convicted in four cases, of which sentences in two have been suspended.

Details of the convictions and some important cases follow:

State Secrets Case

Mr Khan is serving 10 years in prison on charges of making public a classified cable sent to Islamabad by Pakistan's ambassador in Washington in 2022, in what is commonly known as the cipher case. An appeal seeking to suspend the sentence is being heard by the Islamabad High Court.

Mr Khan has said the cable was proof of a conspiracy by the Pakistan military and U.S. government to topple his government in 2022 after he visited Moscow just before Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Washington and Pakistan's military deny that accusation.

Unlawful Marriage Case

Mr Khan and his wife, Bushra Khan, also known as Bushra Bibi, are serving seven-year jail terms after a trial court ruled that their 2018 marriage broke the law. An appeal against this case is being heard by a sessions court.

They were charged with not completing the waiting period mandated by Islam, called "Iddat", after Bibi divorced her previous husband. They signed their marriage contract, or "Nikkah", in January 2018 in a secret ceremony.

State Gifts Case

Mr Khan was handed jail sentences - one of 14 years and the other three years - in two cases pertaining to illegally acquiring and selling state gifts. Both sentences have been suspended by high courts while his appeals are heard.

Also known as the Toshakhana or state treasury case, Mr Khan and his wife are charged with selling gifts worth more than 140 million rupees ($501,000) in state possession, which he received during his 2018-2022 premiership.

The gifts included diamond jewellery and seven watches, six of them Rolexes - the most expensive being valued at 85 million rupees ($304,000).

Abetting Violence

Mr Khan is facing a trial under anti-terrorism charges in connection with violence against the military and other state installations that erupted following his brief arrest in May last year.

A number of Mr Khan's supporters have been sentenced by military courts, but the case against Mr Khan is ongoing.

Kiran Mazumdar Shaw's Angry Post After Video Shows Trash On Bengaluru Roads: ''Disgusting Sight''

Biocon chief Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw on Tuesday called out Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for not clearing trash from the streets of Bengaluru. Ms Mazumdar-Shaw's sharp comments came in response to a video shared on X that showed a long stretch of the Outer Ring Road lined with garbage. Calling the sight ''disgusting'', the Biocon boss asked the Bengaluru civic body department to swiftly clear up the "ugly mess".

''Disgusting sight. @BBMPSWMSplComm needs to act swiftly to clean up this ugly mess,'' she wrote on X while quite-tweeting the original video.

Watch the video here:

The video is now going viral with many X users calling for immediate action. Several people slammed the authorities and said that such a sight is ''unfortunately common'' in other cities too. However, some said that citizens also should have basic civic sense and should try to keep the streets clean.

One user wrote, ''Yes this is next to the same road.. even more shameful is most of the expats, consulates, ministers, even BBMP top officers stay in this locality and they take this route everyday! We are not only letting our city down we are also letting our nation down by displaying such filthy habits.''

Another commented, ''This is the tragic scenario in every tier 1 and tier 2 cities. There are NO public trash bins, so people will throw the garbage wherever they feel like. Unless civic bodies install, insist on using, and maintain the #publictrashbins this will continue.''

A third said, ''Every area in Bengaluru has Roads like these. First, people need to be educated and punished too !!''

A fourth added, ''Hi Maam - It has been similar in few areas now. I have observed people dumping waste near metro stations, dividers and this happens during night. We need to penalize the offenders heavily along with cctv cameras to identify who repeatedly dump in these places.''

Congress Leader Gets Bail In Amit Shah Fake Video Case

A Delhi court on Monday granted bail to a Congress member arrested in connection with a fake video of Union Home Minister Amit Shah's speech, noting that he has cooperated in the probe and his further custodial interrogation is not required.

Arun Reddy, who was arrested on May 3, handles the 'Spirit of Congress' account on 'X', according to officials.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Nabeela Wali noted that the prime allegation against the accused on the basis of which he was arrested was being the 'Admin' of the WhatsApp group on which the alleged fake video was first posted for circulation.

However, there are no allegations of the accused having posted/ circulated the said video on any forum, the judge noted.

He noted that the accused was in custody since May 3 and the investigating agency had already taken his police remand.

"Further, the applicant/ accused, as per reply of the investigating officer (IO) has co-operated with the investigating agency and has disclosed the name of his associates/ other investigation. Also, it is an admitted position that no further police custody is required," the judge said.

The court said that the other suspects in the present case have been granted protection from coercive action by the High Court of Telangana.

"In the opinion of this court, further custodial interrogation of the accused is not required.

"Moreover, it is not the case of the investigating agency that the whereabouts/ details of the other suspects are not known to them.

"It is also submitted that no further recovery is to be effected from the accused and mobile phone of the accused has already been seized and the accused has clean antecedents. Accordingly, the accused Arun Kumar Bereddy is granted bail," the judge said.

The judge directed the accused to join the investigation as and when required by the IO (investigating officer) and to furnish his mobile phone number to the IO which shall be kept operational at all times so that he can be reached out.

"That accused shall not leave the country without the permission from the Court. The accused shall attend the proceedings either before the I0 or before the court," the judge said.

The judge further directed the accused not to directly or indirectly make any inducement, threat or promise to any person acquainted with the facts of the case so as to dissuade him from disclosing such facts to the court or to any police officer or tamper with the evidence.

The court had earlier sent Reddy, 37, to judicial custody after the police told that the accused was not required for further interrogation.

The Delhi Police had arrested Reddy on Friday.

The special cell had registered an FIR after the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), which functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), filed a complaint about the doctored video of Shah where his statements indicating a commitment to abolish quota for Muslims in Telangana were changed to make it seem that he was advocating scrapping of all reservation.

7 Killed In Ukrainian Missile Strike On Russia

At least seven people were killed and 17 injured when a whole section of a Russian apartment block collapsed after it was struck by a Soviet-era missile launched by Ukraine and shot down by Russia, Russian officials said.

In one of the deadliest attacks to date on the region of Belgorod, Ukraine launched what Russian officials said was a massive missile attack with Tochka ballistic missiles and Adler and RM-70 Vampire (MLRS) multiple launch rocket systems.

Footage from the scene showed at least 10 storeys of the building collapsing. Later, as emergency services scoured the rubble for survivors, the roof collapsed and people ran for their lives, dust and rubble falling behind them.

Russia's defence ministry said the attack, which it called a "a terrorist attack on residential areas", took place at 08:40 GMT and involved at least 12 missiles.

"Fragments of one of the downed Tochka-U missiles damaged an apartment building in the city of Belgorod," the ministry said.

Russian news agencies said at least seven people had been killed and 17 injured, including two children. Others were still trapped under the rubble.

Both Ukraine and Russia say they do not target civilians, though many civilians have been killed in the war by both sides.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the strike was a targeted attack on civilians which showed the criminality of both Ukraine and its backers - primarily the United States and its European allies.

There was no immediate comment from Ukraine on the attack.

Kharkiv Front

After heavy shelling of Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region, Russian forces smashed through the border over recent days and say they have pushed Ukrainian forces out of at least nine villages in the area.

The move threatens to open up a new front and has forced Ukraine to dedicate additional troops to the area just as Russian forces advance at key points along the front in the south and the east.

Russian troops on Sunday said they seized another four villages - Hatyshche, Krasne, Morokhovets, Oliinykove - in Kharkiv region in Ukraine.

Russian military bloggers said Russia was taking advantage of its numerical superiority on the battlefield to push hard into relatively undefended areas with highly mobile small units of troops, which then surrounded Ukrainian positions.

Ukraine's military chief said his country's forces were facing a difficult situation in fighting in the Kharkiv region, but that they were doing all they could to hold the line.

"Units of the Defense Forces are fighting fierce defensive battles, the attempts of the Russian invaders to break through our defenses have been stopped," Oleksandr Syrskyi said.

In response to Ukrainian attacks on Belgorod, President Vladimir Putin suggested in March that Moscow could try to establish a buffer zone inside Ukrainian territory due to the attacks on Belgorod.

Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

The conflict in eastern Ukraine began in 2014 after a pro-Russian president was toppled in Ukraine's Maidan Revolution and Russia annexed Crimea, with Russian-backed separatist forces fighting Ukraine's armed forces.

About 14,000 people were killed there between 2014 and the end of 2021, according to United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), including 3,106 civilians.

What Scientists Discovered After 15 Years Of Research On Blue Whale Sound

Scientists have completed a 15-year study on blue whales in the Antarctic, publishing their findings in a comprehensive sonic survey. Utilising passive acoustic devices called sonobuoys, researchers gathered nearly 3,900 hours of sound data, focusing on three distinct types of calls made by these elusive creatures.

The study, led by marine mammal acoustician Brian Miller from the Australian Antarctic Programme, sheds light on the distribution and behaviour of Antarctic blue whales, which were once hunted to near extinction during industrial whaling.

"This analysis represents the most contemporary circumpolar information on the distribution of these rarely sighted and elusive animals, which were hunted to the brink of extinction during industrial whaling," says Brian Miller.

"We can reliably listen for [these whales], sail to them and visually sight them, then photograph and follow them, and even take small biopsies of their skin and blubber for further study."

The analysis revealed three distinct calls, including the Z-call made exclusively by males, the Unit-A call unique to this region, and the 'social' D-call made by both male and female whales. These calls provide valuable insights into whale populations and behaviour.

While the exact meanings of these calls remain unclear, combining acoustic data with other methods such as drone footage and AI algorithms allows researchers to monitor whale movements and assess the potential impacts of climate change on blue whale populations and their main food source, krill.

The study, published in Frontiers in Marine Science, lays the groundwork for future research using passive acoustic monitoring to address knowledge gaps about Antarctic blue whales and their habitat.

Arrest Warrent Issued Against Ex Congress Indore Nominee In 17-Year-Old Case

A sessions court here on Friday issued an arrest warrant against local businessman Akshay Bam and his father in a 17-year-old attempt to murder case.

Akshay Bam was recently in the news for withdrawing his nomination from the Indore Lok Sabha seat as a Congress candidate and later joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Talking to reporters, public prosecutor Abhijit Singh Rathore said Akshay Bam and his father were supposed to appear before the sessions court in the alleged attempt to murder case, but their lawyer moved an application in the court seeking exemption from personal appearance for his clients.

Abhijit Rathore said that as per the application, Akshay Bam was out of the town for "essential work", while doctors advised rest to his father because of poor health.

The session's court rejected the father-son duo's application and issued an arrest warrant against them. It also ordered the police to arrest them and present them before the court by July 8, he said.

According to the public prosecutor, the court noted that both the accused did not appear before it even after being ordered to do so on Friday and they were not currently on bail in the case of section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

On May 3, a sessions court had refused to grant anticipatory bail to Akshay Bam and his father in the alleged attempt to murder case.

On April 24, a Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) from Indore had ordered the addition of section 307 (attempt to murder) of the IPC in the FIR lodged against Akshay Bam and his father for allegedly assaulting a man over a land dispute 17 years ago. The court had also ordered the father-son duo to appear before the session's court on May 10.

Just five days after the order, Akshay Bam had taken the step of withdrawing his name as the Congress candidate from Indore.

Akshay Bam was named as the Congress candidate for the Indore Lok Sabha seat on March 23.

Police officials said an FIR was registered against Akshay Bam, his father Kantilal and others for allegedly attacking a person named Yunus Patel over a land dispute on October 4, 2007.

The FIR was filed under sections 294 (abusive speech), 323 (assault), 506 (criminal intimidation) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), he said.

Patel alleged that during the incident, Satvir Singh, who runs a security agency, fired at him with a 12 bore gun at the behest of Akshay's father Kantilal.

The accused Satvir Singh later died while two other accused in the case, Sohan alias Sonu and Manoj, have been on the run.

Xi Jinping Visits Hungary, Hails "Long-Standing Friendship"

Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Hungary Thursday seeking a "new journey" with Beijing's closest European Union ally amid Beijing's divisions with the West over the Ukraine war and global trade.

The state visit to Hungary is the last leg of Xi's European tour, his first to the continent since 2019.

In recent years, the Central European country of 9.6 million people has attracted a flood of major Chinese projects, mostly related to the manufacture of electric vehicles and batteries.

Hungarian President Tamas Sulyok warmly received Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan with military honours in the courtyard of the presidential palace in Budapest on Thursday morning.

The Chinese leader arrived in the Hungarian capital on Wednesday night after wrapping up his visit to Serbia, and later attended a state dinner with Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Budapest was decked out with Chinese flags and placed under tight security, while Tibetan flags were hidden from sight.

In an op-ed published in Hungary's pro-government Magyar Nemzet daily ahead of his arrival, Xi praised a "long-standing friendship" he described "as mellow and rich as Tokaji wine", referring to the renowned Hungarian vineyards region.

"We have gone through hardships together and defied power politics together amid volatile international situations.

"Our bilateral relationship is at its best in history, and has embarked on a golden voyage... On the new journey of the new era, China looks forward to working closely with our Hungarian friends," he wrote.

Deepening ties

Frequently at loggerheads with Brussels, Orban has been pursuing an eastwards foreign policy since his return to power in 2010, seeking closer economic ties with Russia, China and other Asian countries.

The nationalist premier remained committed to his strategy even as tensions between Western nations and Beijing increased over human rights violations, the Covid pandemic, trade and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Xi's three-day visit to Hungary marks 75 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Since Hungary began to promote itself as a global hub for EV manufacturing in 2022, several new Chinese businesses have sprung up all over the country.

According to the Hungarian government, the two countries are expected to sign at least 16 different agreements promoting their cooperation in rail and road infrastructure, nuclear energy and the automotive industry.

Xi will meet Orban for talks later on Thursday before delivering a statement to the press.

The Chinese leader is due to leave Hungary on Friday afternoon.

Message to Europe

Earlier this week, the Chinese leader kicked off his trip in France, a visit that was cordial but also highlighted tensions between Beijing and the EU over the war in Ukraine and global trade.

While French President Emmanuel Macron pressed a message to Beijing not to support Russia's war against Ukraine and to accept fairer trade, Hungary will provide "a friendlier destination for Xi", said political scientist Ja Ian Chong of the University of Singapore.

In Hungary, a country with close ties to both Moscow and Beijing, Xi will be able to "avoid tough conversations and awkward questions", he added.

Both countries have called for a peaceful settlement of Russia's war in Ukraine.

"Hungary provides a diplomatic win for Xi, showing his warm ties with an EU member state that will still roll out the red carpet for Chinese investment," said Xiaoxue Martin, a researcher at the Clingendael China Centre.

"Xi's message to the rest of Europe: this is how China would like to be treated in Europe," she added.

On the streets of Budapest, Hungarians were divided over the visit.

"Money does not smell, as they say, so other countries would welcome the kind of investment that is going to happen here, even in Western Europe I assume," said 52-year-old security manager Laszlo Toth.

But Tibor Hendre, head of the Tibet Support Association, said he was worried that Hungary was "getting into... a debt trap, from which we cannot really escape".

Software engineer Dezso Bereknyei, 46, said that "financial benefits" appeared to be driving the cooperation, and were "coming before environmental protection".

Strategic Forces "Always On Alert", Says Putin During Victory Day Speech

President Vladimir Putin on Thursday warned his nuclear forces were "always" on alert and added that Moscow would not tolerate any Western threats, during an address on the annual Victory Day parade.

In a defiant speech on Red Square before thousands of soldiers dressed in ceremonial attire, Putin heaped praise on his army fighting in Ukraine and accused "Western elites" of fomenting conflicts around the world.

"Russia will do everything to prevent a global clash, but at the same time we will not allow anyone to threaten us. Our strategic forces are always on alert," Putin told the crowd.

"Dear friends, Russia is now going through a difficult, crucial period. The fate of the Motherland, its future depends on each of us," he said.

The May 9 parade marks the Soviet Union's defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II and has become Russia's most important public holiday as Putin puts the country firmly on a combat footing.

Putin has used nuclear rhetoric throughout the conflict but has grown increasingly belligerent since last year, pulling out of a nuclear test ban treaty and a key arms reduction agreement with the United States.

Earlier this week, he ordered the Russian military to hold nuclear drills involving the navy and troops based near Ukraine, raising fears he could use the powerful weapons on the battlefield.

In comments recorded on Tuesday but released by the Kremlin after the parade, Putin vowed to modernise his army's weaponry and said Russia would use whatever foreign parts it could get to make them.

"Modern military technology is changing very fast. If we want to be successful, we always have to be one step ahead," he said in a meeting with army commanders.

'Russia is with you'

Putin has repeatedly framed the current fight against Ukraine as an existential battle against "Nazism", a message he reiterated in his address Thursday.

"We bow our heads before the memory of civilians killed by barbaric shelling and terrorist attacks by neo-Nazis," he said.

"Those on the front line, on the line of contact -- are our heroes. We bow before your steadfastness and self-sacrifice, selflessness. All Russia is with you," he continued.

Russia's border regions including Belgorod have been hit by repeated deadly Ukrainian attacks since the conflict began, including on Thursday when overnight aerial bombardment injured eight people.

Security in the capital was tight ahead of this year's parade, amid repeated Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory and after an Islamic State attack on a concert hall near the capital in March killed dozens.

Other parts of Russia including the western Kursk and Pskov regions cancelled their parades due to security concerns.

The parade featured columns of Russian military equipment, although was notably scaled back compared to past years as Moscow mobilises its resources for the Ukraine front.

"We come to see it every year," said 44-year-old Yelena Melikhova, who watched the procession of military equipment heading to Red Square.

"It's very touching, very exciting."

Svetlana Sycheva, 48, who watched the parade said she was filled with "pride".

"Even in such difficult times we have the opportunity to rejoice, and to feel the emotions that we have just experienced," she told AFP.

'We will win'

Russia often invites representatives from countries it deems "friendly" to the event, though attendance had dwindled even before it sent troops into Ukraine in early 2022 amid a stand-off with the West.

Nine world leaders attended Thursday's parade -- the heads of ex-Soviet republics Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan -- as well as the leaders of Cuba, Laos and Guinea-Bissau.

The 71-year-old Putin has ruled Russia since the turn of the century, securing a fresh six-year mandate in March after winning presidential elections devoid of all opposition.

Russia's army held off a much-hyped Ukrainian counter-offensive last year, and it has since made gains on the front lines as Kyiv struggles with ammunition and manpower shortages.

Thursday's festivities come two days after Putin vowed at a lavish inauguration to deliver "victory" to Russians.

"We are a united and great nation, and together we will overcome all obstacles, realise everything we have planned, and together, we will win," he said.

"Loads Of Opportunities In India": Billionaire Investor Warren Buffett

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett said that the Indian market has "unexplored" opportunities which his conglomerate holding company, Berkshire Hathaway, would like to explore "in the future".

Mr Buffett's remarks came at Berkshire's annual meeting on Friday when Rajeev Agarwal of DoorDarshi Advisors, a US-based hedge fund that invests in Indian equities, asked him about the possibility of Berkshire exploring in India, the world's fifth-largest economy.

"It is a very good question. I am sure there are loads of opportunities in countries like India," he said.

"The question, however, is whether we have any advantage or insights into those businesses in India or any contacts that will make possible transactions that Berkshire would like to participate in. That is something a more energetic management at Berkshire could pursue," the co-founder, chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway said.

Mr Buffett, 93, said Berkshire has a great reputation around the world. He said, his Japanese experience has been fascinating enough.

"There may be an unexplored or an unattended opportunity...but that may be something in the future," he said about India.

Mr Buffett said the question is if Berkshire has some kind of advantage in pursuing those unattended opportunities, particularly against people who are managing other people's money and getting paid based on assets.

During a Question and Answer session, Mr Buffett answered several questions related to some of the key investment decisions taken by Berkshire Hathway lately.

Decidedly reducing stake in Apple was one of the key topics. Mr Buffett clarified that it had nothing to do with the long-term view on the stock and Apple will probably remain one of their largest holdings despite the recent slowdown.

He also told shareholders that Vice Chairmen Greg Abel and Ajit Jain have proven themselves the right people to lead Berkshire after he departs.

Patna Second Most Polluted City In The Country. First Is...

Patna was the second most polluted city in India on Sunday, recording an air quality index (AQI) of 316, which is classified as 'very poor'.

Other cities in the state that recorded 'poor' AQI are Siwan (282), Muzaffarpur (233), Hajipur (232) and Bettiah (221).

Greater Noida in UP was the most polluted city in the country with an AQI of 346, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) bulletin at 4 pm.

'Very poor' air quality causes respiratory illness on prolonged exposure, according to the CPCB.

AQI is an assessment of air quality that takes into account pollutants, including PM 2.5 -- particulate matter less than 2.5 microns, and PM 10.

Bihar State Pollution Control Board (BSPCB) chairman Devendra Kumar Shukla told PTI, "It is true that the air quality has deteriorated in certain cities of the state. It is because of low wind speed, ongoing construction activities without following pollution control measures and recent fire incidents in Patna and surrounding areas." He said civic bodies will have to start sprinkling water to check the deteriorating AQI in the state capital.

"Rain will certainly bring some immediate relief. The BSPCB will soon intensify its drive to check deteriorating AQI levels in certain cities of the state," he added.

Former Trump Aide Hope Hicks Testifies At Criminal Hush Money Trial

Trump's former campaign press secretary Hope Hicks became the first former member of Donald Trump's inner circle to take the witness stand in his historic criminal trial on Friday.

"I'm really nervous," said Hicks as Trump, sitting just feet away, stared at her intently.

Hicks was intimately involved with the final stages of Trump's successful campaign for the White House when hush money payments to X-rated star Stormy Daniels were allegedly made.

Trump is charged with falsifying business records to reimburse his lawyer, Michael Cohen, for a $130,000 payment to Daniels just days ahead of the 2016 election against Hillary Clinton.

The trial, the first ever of a former US president, and its revelations have sent shockwaves through the legal and political establishment as Trump seeks to re-take the White House from President Joe Biden at November polls.

"I reported to Mr Trump" during the 2016 campaign, Hicks told the court on Friday, describing him as "very involved."

Hicks was asked about the now infamous Access Hollywood recording, released ahead of the 2016 election, of Trump boasting about how he would grab women by their genitalia.

She said Trump's response was that "it didn't sound like something he would say."

Hicks was mentioned in earlier testimony by David Pecker, the former publisher of the National Enquirer tabloid which has been key to the prosecution's case against Trump.

He said Hicks was present at a 2015 meeting at Trump Tower in New York at which he agreed to help Trump's nascent campaign for the Republican nomination the following year.

Hicks said that she did not recall the encounter.

Earlier this week, prosecutors urged Judge Juan Merchan to fine Trump for more violations of a gag order imposed to protect trial participants.

Merchan, who threatened Trump with jail time on Tuesday for further gag order violations, heard arguments from both sides and could issue a ruling Friday.

The judge started Friday's session by unusually addressing Trump directly, saying he wanted to "clear up (any) misunderstanding" on the gag order.

Merchan stressed that Trump had an "absolute right to testify" in court, and that the gag "only applies to extrajudicial statements... outside of court."

Trump, who had claimed that the gag order meant he would not be able to testify freely, responded "thank you."

Merchan has already fined Trump, who wore an electric blue tie and dark suit, $9,000 for violations of his gag order so far.

'Salacious' trial

On Thursday Daniels' former attorney, Keith Davidson, was grilled by the ex-president's lawyers. Davidson also represented another woman, Karen McDougal, who claimed to have had a year-long affair with Trump.

Trump attorney Emil Bove's questioning of Davidson quickly turned heated.

"When you were negotiating on behalf of McDougal and Daniels one of your concerns was staying on the right side of the law with regard to extortion," Bove said.

"I suppose so," Davidson replied. "I did everything I could to make sure my activities were lawful."

The court also heard from a forensic expert, Douglas Daus, who examined Cohen's cell phones and retrieved what appeared to be recordings of Trump, and Cohen's phone calls.

"Merchan is doing everything in his power to make this trial as salacious as possible," Trump posted online ahead of court Friday after a series of withering posts were read into the court record on Thursday.

India Says "Shaksgam Valley Ours" On China Construction Activity Reports

The Shaksgam Valley is a part of the territory of India, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said today amid reports of China building infrastructure in the valley, a strategically located region that is now part of the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that India "never accepted the so-called China-Pakistan Boundary Agreement of 1963 through which Pakistan unlawfully attempted to cede the area to China".

Lodging a strong protest with China for carrying out construction activities, India called it an "illegal" attempt to alter the situation on the ground.

"We have registered our protest with the Chinese side against illegal attempts to alter facts on the ground," said Mr Jaiswal, adding the country reserves "the right to take necessary measures to safeguard our interests".

The reports of Chinese construction activities come amid a row between India and China in eastern Ladakh.

Speaking about the Ladakh border row, the MEA spokesperson said the next round of talks will be held very soon to "take things forward".

"We have ongoing talks between India and China at diplomatic and military levels. These issues are serious and therefore they take time. We will have the next round of engagement very soon to take things forward," he said.

The last round of military talks between the two sides had taken place in February. In the talks, both sides agreed to maintain "peace and tranquillity" on the ground but there was no indication of any breakthrough.

The Indian and Chinese troops are locked in a standoff in certain friction points in eastern Ladakh even as the two sides completed disengagement from several areas following extensive diplomatic and military talks.

Donald Trump Declines Pledge To Accept 2024 Presidential Election Results If He Loses

Donald Trump was facing a backlash Thursday after declining to pledge he will accept the results of the 2024 presidential election if he loses, as he repeated his false claims that he was cheated in the 2020 vote.

"If everything's honest, I'd gladly accept the results," the Republican former president told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Wednesday. "If it's not, you have to fight for the right of the country."

Trump -- who is running for a return to the White House, in what will almost certainly be a re-run of his 2020 face-off with Joe Biden -- made similar remarks ahead of the last two presidential elections.

He told the Sentinel he would "let it be known" if he thought there were problems.

"I'd be doing a disservice to the country if I said otherwise," he said. "But no, I expect an honest election and we expect to win maybe very big."

Trump equivocated when asked recently by Time Magazine if his defeat in November would spark political violence, and his latest remarks prompted a withering response from the Biden camp.

"Bottom line: Trump is a danger to the constitution and a threat to our democracy," campaign spokesman James Singer said in a statement.

"The American people are going to give him another electoral defeat this November because they continue to reject his extremism, his affection for violence, and his thirst for revenge."

Trump is facing dozens of felony charges over an alleged criminal conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election -- culminating in the storming of the US Capitol by his supporters -- that was based on his false claims of voter fraud.

The former president continues to make baseless claims that the White House was stolen from him in 2020, repeatedly and falsely alleging at two rallies as recently as Wednesday that Democrats had committed widespread voter fraud.

"The radical left Democrats rigged the presidential election in 2020 and we're not going to allow them to rig the presidential election in 2024. We won't have a country left," Trump thundered in Waukesha, Wisconsin.

The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
