"Hardcore" About Cost Cut, Elon Musk's Tesla To Cut Hundreds More Jobs: Report

Tesla plans hundreds of additional job cuts beyond a recent company-wide layoff as it cracks down on costs in a tough electric vehicle market, according to a US media report.

Elon Musk's EV company, which moved earlier this month to cut more than 10 percent of its 140,000 employes, will disband two departments and lay off most of the employees from the groups, reported the Information late Monday.

The online technology publication quoted from a Musk email in which he vowed to be "absolutely hard core about headcount and cost reduction."

Musk will seek to oust any executive "who retains more than three people who don't obviously pass the excellent, necessary and trustworthy test ... I have been super clear about this," said Musk's email, according to the Information.

The latest cuts mean Rebecca Tinucci, a senior director in EV charging, and Daniel Ho, head of new products, will leave the company.

Also departing will be most of the 500 workers in Tinucci's Supercharger group, plus other staff reporting to Ho. Musk is also dissolving a public policy team, the report said.

Tesla last week reported a 55 percent drop in quarterly earnings to $1.1 billion, reflecting a decline in EV sales in a market with intensifying competition.

Despite the downcast results, Tesla shares were buoyed last week by Musk's pledge to accelerate production of new, more affordable EVs and by Musk's visit to China on Monday that resulted in a key security clearance from the Chinese government for Tesla technology.

No Abnormal Rise In Seasonal Flu Cases In Country So Far: Health Ministry

There has been no abnormal rise in cases of seasonal flu in any part of the country as of now, the Union health ministry said on Monday, underlining that it is keeping a close watch on the situation through its Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme network.

Since the detection of the first case of Influenza-A H1N1 in 2009, India every year witnesses two peaks of this seasonal influenza -- one from January to March and other in the post-monsoon season, the ministry said.

"As of now, there has been no abnormal alarming rise in cases of seasonal flu in any part of the country," it stated in a statement.

A near real-time surveillance of cases of Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI) presenting in outdoor and indoor patient departments of health facilities is undertaken by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) through the Indian Council of Medical Research's network of laboratories across the country.

In view of various media reports regarding detection of avian influenza virus in cattle and milk in the US, a video conference under the chairmanship of the Director General of Health Services was also held on Sunday to review the current situation of seasonal influenza. It was informed by experts that with use of proper hygienic practices such as boiling of milk and proper cooking of meat at adequate temperatures would help prevent the virus transmission from the product (if the virus is present) to the human beings, the statement said.

Seasonal influenza is an acute respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses which circulate in all parts of the world, and the cases are seen to increase during certain months globally.

Young children and the elderly with co-morbidities are the most vulnerable groups in context of seasonal influenza.

The health ministry has provided guidelines on categorisation of patients, treatment protocols and guidelines on ventilatory management to states and Union Territories. The National Centre for Disease Control has also advised state governments for vaccination of healthcare workers dealing with H1N1 cases.

"As of now, the situation is under control and is being monitored by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for seasonal and avian influenza viruses also," the statement said.

White House Urges "Peaceful" Campus Protests After Hundreds Arrested

The White House insisted Sunday that pro-Palestinian protests that have rocked US universities in recent weeks must remain peaceful, after police arrested around 275 people on four separate campuses over the weekend.

"We certainly respect the right of peaceful protests," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told ABC's "This Week."

But, he added, "we absolutely condemn the anti-Semitism language that we've heard of late and certainly condemn all the hate speech and the threats of violence out there."

The wave of demonstrations began at Columbia University in New York but they have since spread rapidly across the country.

While peace has prevailed in many campuses, the number of protesters detained -- at times by police in riot gear using chemical irritants and tasers -- is rising fast.

They include 100 at Northeastern University in Boston, 80 at Washington University in St Louis, 72 at Arizona State University and 23 at Indiana University.

Among those arrested at Washington University was Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein, who faulted police for aggressive tactics she said provoked the sort of trouble they are meant to quell.

"This is about freedom of speech... on a very critical issue," she told CNN shortly before her arrest Saturday. "And there they are, sending in the riot police and basically creating a riot."

College administrators have struggled to find the best response, caught between the need to respect free-speech rights and the imperative of containing inflammatory and sometimes violently anti-Semitic calls by protesters.

At the University of Southern California, school officials late Saturday closed the main campus to the public after pro-Palestinian groups again set up an encampment that had been cleared earlier, the school announced on X.

With final exams coming in the next few weeks, some campuses -- including the Humboldt campus of California State Polytechnic University, have closed and instructed students to complete their classes online.

The activists behind the campus protests -- not all of them students -- are calling for a ceasefire in Israel's war with Hamas, and want colleges to sever ties with Israel.

Hamas operatives staged an unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7 that left around 1,170 people dead, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

Palestinian operatives also took roughly 250 people hostage. Israel estimates 129 remain in Gaza, including 34 the military says are dead.

Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed at least 34,454 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to the Hamas-run territory's health ministry.

"Will Leave No Stone Unturned": Manipur Security Adviser After Militants Kill 2 CRPF Soldiers

Manipur security adviser Kuldiep Singh today warned the group responsible for the attack on a camp of security forces in Bishnupur district, which led to the deaths of two CRPF personnel and injuries to two others.

"Whoever has committed this act will face severe consequences. We are mobilising all necessary resources and agencies to identify and apprehend the perpetrators," Mr Singh told reporters.

"The militants came and fired at the IRB (India Reserve Battalion) camp at Naranseina in Moirang police station area in the early hours of Saturday. Though it was dark, the forces retaliated. Out of the four injured, two succumbed to injuries," Mr Singh said.

"These forces have come from distant places to maintain peace in this region," Mr Singh said.

"Starting today, we have instructed all security forces, including Assam Rifles and the army, to intensify operations. We are formulating strategies for day-to-day operations. We will leave no stone unturned in our investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice," he said.

Reacting to a recent IED (improvised explosive device) explosion that damaged a bridge in Kangpokpi district, Mr Singh expressed concern over attacks on national infrastructure and central forces.

"I have seen that groups are now targeting national infrastructure such as roads and bridges. They are also attacking central forces. This cannot be tolerated. We will probe everything and take action against the culprits," he said.

Expressing surprise at the attack on security forces, Mr Singh said, "We did not anticipate such assaults, especially considering that both Meitei and Kuki militants have historically refrained from targeting forces engaged in maintaining peace."

"We have always strived to maintain neutrality between both communities. In the past, both communities have welcomed the presence of central forces, so why attack neutral forces now?" he added.

The CRPF soldiers who died in action were identified as sub-inspector N Sarkar, a resident of Assam's Kokrajhar district, and head constable Arup Saini, a resident of Bankura district in West Bengal.

The injured are inspector Jadav Das and constable Aftab Das, police said, adding they have splinter wounds.

India's First Multi-Purpose Green Hydrogen Pilot Project Inaugurated In Himachal Pradesh

India's first multi-purpose green hydrogen pilot project at the 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS) in Himachal Pradesh's Jhakri was inaugurated on Wednesday, according to Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) officials.

SJVN Chairman and Managing Director Geeta Kapur inaugurated a 20Nm3/hr electrolyzer and 25kW fuel cell capacity-based green hydrogen pilot project, a statement issued here said.

The project is the nation's first multi-purpose (combined heat and power) green hydrogen generation plant with the capability to cater to the high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) coating facility of NJHPS to meet its combustion fuel requirements, in addition to generating electricity through its 25 kW capacity fuel cell.

It will produce hydrogen gas by splitting hydrogen and oxygen from water with the help of an alkaline electrolyzer of 20 Nm3/hr capacity by utilising renewable energy supplied from the 1.31 MW solar power plant of SJVN located in Wadhal, Himachal Pradesh.

The pilot project is set to produce 14 kg of green hydrogen daily during eight hours of operation, which will be stored in six storage tanks. The green hydrogen will be used for HVOF coating of turbine underwater parts in addition to generating electricity through its 25 kW fuel cell, officials said.

"Aligned with the National Green Hydrogen Mission of the Government of India, SJVN's Green Hydrogen Pilot Project is poised to accelerate the development of green hydrogen production infrastructure in the power sector, establishing green hydrogen as a clean energy source," said Kapur.

Kapur also inaugurated the first-of-kind centralised operation of 1,500 MW of NJHPS and 412 MW of Rampur Hydro Power Station (RHPS) by remotely operating Unit-2 of RHPS from the NJHPS control room at Jhakri.

Chinese Woman Diagnosed With 'Love Brain' After Calling Boyfriend 100 Times Daily

An 18-year-old woman in China, identified only as Xiaoyu, has been hospitalised after exhibiting obsessive behaviour towards her boyfriend. Doctors believe she may be suffering from borderline personality disorder, according to The South China Morning Post.

Xiaoyu's behaviour began during her first year of university, according to local reports. She reportedly became overly dependent on her boyfriend, demanding constant communication and updates on his whereabouts. This behaviour caused significant strain on the relationship, leaving the boyfriend feeling stifled.

The situation escalated when Xiaoyu called her boyfriend over 100 times in a single day and he did not answer. She became extremely upset and began damaging household objects. Fearing for her safety, the boyfriend contacted the police.

The officers arrived just as Xiaoyu was threatening to jump from their balcony. She was taken to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, The South China Morning Post reported.

While not a medical term itself, "love brain" is used colloquially to describe this type of obsessive behaviour in romantic relationships. Dr Du Na, a doctor at the hospital where Xiaoyu was treated, explained that borderline personality disorder can sometimes co-occur with other conditions like anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. Dr Du also suggested that such conditions might be linked to unhealthy childhood attachments.

"He was expected to reply to her messages immediately," Du said.

Du did not disclose the cause of Xiaoyu's illness, but said it often occurred in people who had not had a healthy relationship with their parents during childhood.

While some mild cases may improve with emotional management techniques, Dr Du emphasised that severe cases, like Xiaoyu's, require medical intervention.

Himachal Pradesh Village Gets Mobile Network For 1st Time, PM Modi Speaks To Residents

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke to residents of Giu village in Himachal Pradesh's Spiti after the area was connected to the mobile network for the first time.

In a more than 13-minute telephonic conversation with them, PM Modi spoke about his visit to the border region during Diwali and asserted that connecting the village with the mobile network will quicken the 'Digital India' campaign.

The government is now prioritising linking all places with communication technology after meeting success with the electrification exercise, the prime minister said, noting that when he came to power more than 18,000 villages lacked electricity.

A villager told him that they could not believe it for a moment when they were told that the area would be connected to the mobile network and their happiness knew know no bounds when it finally happened.

They had to earlier travel for around eight kilometres to use their mobile-phones, he said.

PM Modi highlighted his government's efforts to boost development in border areas under the 'Vibrant Village Programme (VVP)', saying the earlier dispensations left these regions to their fate.

In his third term, he will focus on people's quality of life after prioritising their ease of living so far and this will immensely benefit remote regions, the poor and the middle class, PM Modi said.

The region will also benefit a lot from the 'One District One Product' programme, he added.

Israel Bombs Gaza As West Sanctions Iran Drones Over Attack

Israel launched more deadly strikes on besieged Gaza on Thursday as Western governments unveiled sweeping sanctions against Iran's military drone programme in response to the country's unprecedented attack on its arch-enemy Israel.

World powers have been watching nervously since Israel vowed to retaliate against Iran for the weekend assault, with fears soaring that escalating tit-for-tat attacks could push the region towards wider war.

Further stoking tensions, Iran warned on Thursday that if Israel struck Iranian atomic sites during its expected retaliation, Tehran would in turn target Israeli "nuclear facilities".

And more than six months into the bloodiest-ever Gaza war, the Israeli army said it had bombed dozens of targets in the territory, as Qatar said efforts to broker a truce have stalled.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has vowed to destroy Hamas over its October 7 attack that started the war, has stressed that Israel "reserves the right to protect itself" against Iran.

The Islamic Republic last weekend carried out its first-ever attack to directly target its regional foe but Israel, backed by its allies, intercepted most of the 300 missiles and drones and suffered no deaths.

Iran's attack was retaliation for an April 1 air strike, widely blamed on Israel, which levelled its consulate in Damascus and killed seven Revolutionary Guards.

'Middle East on a precipice'

The international community has urged de-escalation since Iran's attack, which came after months of violence involving Israel and Iran-backed groups in Lebanon, Iraq, Syria and Yemen.

"The Middle East is on a precipice," UN chief Antonio Guterres warned on Thursday.

"One miscalculation, one miscommunication, one mistake, could lead to the unthinkable --- a full-scale regional conflict that would be devastating for all involved," he told the UN Security Council.

The United States, Israel's top ally and military supplier, has made clear it won't join any Israeli attack on Iran, instead unveiling new sanctions on Thursday against the country's military drone programme.

"We are holding Iran accountable," US President Joe Biden said, adding that he had discussed ramping up economic pressure on Tehran with other leaders at a G7 meeting in Capri, Italy.

The US sanctions target 16 people and two entities involved in producing the drones used in Iran's attack, as well as companies providing parts to the country's steel industry.

Washington added that the United Kingdom would impose sanctions on Iran's drone and missile programme, which was also the target of promised sanctions announced by the European Union on Wednesday.

Israel has yet to reveal how or when it will carry out its promised retaliation against Iran.

US broadcaster ABC News, citing three unnamed Israeli sources, reported that Israel had "prepared for and then aborted retaliatory strikes against Iran on at least two nights this past week".

Among the range of possible responses considered by Israel were an attack on Iranian proxies in the region or a cyberattack, the sources told ABC.

A high-ranking Iranian general warned Israel against attacking Iran's nuclear sites.

If this did happen, then "the nuclear facilities of the regime will be targeted and operated upon with advanced weaponry," said Ahmad Haghtalab, the head of Iran's Nuclear Protection and Security Corps.

However, Tehran has also sought to calm tensions through indirect diplomatic channels with its other major adversary, the United States.

Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, in New York for a UN meeting, said Iran had "tried to tell the United States clearly" that it is "not looking for the expansion of tension in the region".

Focus turns away from Gaza

Israel has faced growing global opposition to the relentless war that has reduced vast areas of Gaza to rubble, while its 2.4 million people have suffered under an Israeli siege that has blocked most water, food, medicines and other vital supplies.

Guterres said Israel's offensive had created a "humanitarian hellscape" for civilians trapped in Gaza. He said that Israel had made "limited progress" on allowing more aid into the territory, calling for more to be done.

Yet Iran's attack on Israel "is succeeding in taking the focus, particularly the media spotlight, off of the Gaza famine and the Gaza war," Roxane Farmanfarmaian, a Middle East and North Africa specialist at Cambridge University, told AFP.

The war started after Hamas launched their unprecedented attack on October 7 that resulted in the deaths of 1,170 people in southern Israel, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

The militants also took about 250 hostages. Israel estimates 129 remain in Gaza, including 34 who are presumed dead.

Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed at least 33,970 people in Gaza, mostly women and children. according to the Hamas-run territory's health ministry.

UN Security Council vote

Gaza's civil defence said Thursday it had recovered 11 more bodies in the southern city of Khan Yunis during the night.

Also bombed by Israel was the far-southern city of Rafah, where Gaza rescue teams recovered the corpses of eight family members, including five children and two women, from a single house, the civil defence service said.

A separate strike hit Rafah overnight, killing at least 10 people, relatives and neighbours told AFP as they searched for the remains of victims.

"All of a sudden, a missile hit them," said neighbour Abdeljabbar al-Arja, who spoke of finding the arms and feet of women and children.

"This is horrifying, it's not normal," he said. "The entire world is complicit."

Talks toward a ceasefire have stalled, said Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, despite months of effort also involving US and Egyptian mediators.

Qatar is undertaking "a complete re-evaluation of its role" as mediator because the country had been targeted by "point-scoring" by politicians, he said.

The UN Security Council was expected to vote soon on the Palestinians' bid to become a full member state of the United Nations.

However, the veto-wielding United States has repeatedly expressed opposition to such a move.

Man Arrested In Poland Over Suspected Plot To Kill Ukraine's Zelensky

A man suspected of aiding a plot by Russian intelligence services to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been arrested in Poland, Polish and Ukrainian prosecutors said Thursday.

The Polish national, named only as Pawel K., is suspected of supplying information to Russian military intelligence and "helping the Russian special forces to plan a possible assassination attempt" against Zelensky, said a statement from Polish prosecutors.

It said the suspect had stated he was "ready to act on behalf of the military intelligence services of the Russian Federation and established contact with Russian citizens directly involved in the war in Ukraine".

Ukrainian prosecutors had informed Poland about the activities, which had enabled them to gather "essential evidence" against the suspect, the statement added.

Ukraine's chief prosecutor Andriy Kostin said the suspect had been tasked with "gathering and transmitting to the aggressor state information about security at Rzeszow-Jasionka airport" in southeastern Poland.

Zelensky frequently passes through the airport on his trips abroad. It is also used by foreign officials and aid convoys heading to Ukraine.

The suspect is in detention pending judicial procedures, the two countries' prosecutors said.

"This case underscores the persistent threat Russia poses not only to Ukraine and Ukrainians but to the entire free world," Kostin wrote on X, the former Twitter.

"The Kremlin's criminal regime... organises and carries out sabotage operations on the territory of other sovereign states," he added.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski commended the work of his country's special services and prosecutors in the operation as well as cooperation with neighbouring Ukraine.

Warsaw has been one of Kyiv's staunchest backers since the Russian invasion in February 2022, although ties have frayed recently in a dispute over agricultural imports.

Complaining About Spouse To Employer Using Derogatory Terms Cruelty: Delhi High Court

The Delhi High Court ruled that making derogatory complaints to the spouse's employer with intent to harm professional reputation and financial well-being amounts to cruelty.

A bench headed by Justice Suresh Kumar Kait, while dissolving the marriage between a couple, stated that making such complaints demonstrates a lack of mutual respect and goodwill, which is crucial for a healthy marriage.

The appellant husband challenged a family court order refusing to grant him a divorce, saying he endured severe mental torture and anguish in the relationship. He alleged that the wife sent complaints to his employer intending to embarrass and humiliate him in front of his colleagues.

"Whether the complaints were false or true, irrespective of this fact, making derogatory complaints to the employer of a spouse, with intent to harm the professional reputation and financial well-being, is nothing but cruelty," observed the bench, also comprising Justice Neena Bansal Krishna, in an order passed earlier this month.

"Making such complaints demonstrates a lack of mutual respect and goodwill, which is crucial for a healthy marriage, and merely by stating that such complaints were made after the parties have separated, in no manner absolves a spouse from the guilt of committing cruelty," stated the court.

The marriage between the parties was solemnized in January 2011 according to Hindu rites and ceremonies and the two parties have been living separately since September 2011.

In the order, the court considered the husband's allegation that the wife sent a message using defamatory language for her father-in-law and opined that it showed a lack of respect and consideration within the relationship.

It said the wife's conduct leads to the inevitable conclusion that her behaviour caused serious concern in the husband's mind, disturbing his mental peace and making it untenable for the parties to sustain their marital relationship.

"The respondent's admission to sending a message containing derogatory language towards the appellant's father and filing of complaints with his employer can be considered as cruelty. Such incidents create an atmosphere of tension and instability within the marital relationship, causing emotional harm to both parties involved," the court stated.

Further, the prolonged litigations between the spouses undermine the potential for amicable resolution as it exacerbates animosity and impedes their ability to move forward constructively, added the court.

The persistent engagement in litigation - including over guardianship of their son and allegations of domestic violence - over an extended period can be viewed as a form of cruelty, spanning over a decade, can be construed as cruelty, it said.

"The respondent (wife) has lived for a short span of less than even one year with the appellant and has deliberately chosen to stay away with his parents and son of the parties, thereby depriving the appellant of marital bliss and fatherhood," it remarked.

The court also said that filing a petition for the restitution of conjugal rights by the wife and then not pursuing it was a deliberate attempt to delay the divorce proceedings, causing further harassment to the husband.

"The present appeal is accordingly allowed and the appellant is granted a divorce under Sections 13(1)(ia) of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955," the court said.

"If Anything Happens To My Wife...": Ex Pak PM Imran Khan Warns Army Chief

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder and jailed former prime minister Imran Khan on Wednesday alleged that Army chief General Asim Munir was directly responsible for the imprisonment of his wife Bushra Bibi.

Bushra Bibi, 49, was convicted in a corruption case as well as in the case of illegal marriage with Mr Khan, 71, and is currently held in detention at their Bani Gala residence in the suburbs of Islamabad.

The PTI leader in a conversation with journalists at Adiala Jail where he is currently incarcerated hurled allegations on the army chief, according to a long post uploaded on Mr Khan's official X account.

"General Asim Munir is directly involved in the sentence awarded to my wife," Mr Khan said, adding that the judge who convicted her said that he was forced to make the decision.

"If anything happens to my wife, I will not leave Asim Munir, I will not leave Asim Munir as long as I am alive. I will expose his unconstitutional and illegal steps," he threatened.

Mr Khan said there was a law of the jungle in the country and all was being done by the "king of the jungle". "If the king of the jungle wants, all the cases of Nawaz Sharif are forgiven, and when he wants, we are punished in three cases in five days," he alleged.

Mr Khan also said that the economy would stabilise not through the International Monetary Fund (IMF) loans but by investment. "Due to the law of the jungle, there will be no investment in the country. It is good that Saudi Arabia is coming but investment will come once there is rule of law in the country," he said.

He also referred to the recent reported clash between police and army in Bahawalnagar area of Punjab and said that the "police were thrashed" by violating the law, but the IG (inspector general police) and Viceroy, who oppressed our people, apologised from those who had thrashed the police.

Mr Khan said the Viceroy said after the incident that "they (police) are our brothers". He went on to say that "such treatment is done to slaves and not to brothers" because those having power thrashed the police and also forced to apologise.

He also said that PTI was being stopped from contesting in the by-elections. "At this time, standing in front of oppression is Jihad. Our workers have to protect each vote, guard the vote," the former premier said.

So far the army has not responded to the serious allegations.

Agitating Groups In Ladakh Call Off Pashmina March To China Border

Activist Sonam Wangchuk, a part of an agitation to press for Sixth Schedule status to Ladakh, today said that the proposed march to the China border for the second time this month due to "non-cooperation" of local administration has been called off.

Leh Apex Body (LAB), an amalgam of social and religious groups, along with the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) had planned to start their march tomorrow.

Mr Wangchuk claimed the motive behind the march was only to know whether pastures in the region were being taken over for setting up projects by big industrialists and if any Indian land was taken away by China.

“We have decided to call off the Pashmina March for the second time due to over-reaction by the administration," he told reporters.

The groups have been agitating to demand statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

Sonam Wangchuk, flanked by LAB leaders, including its co-chairman Chering Dorjay, said the administration did not allow them to undertake the foot march and instead suggested moving to the area in vehicles.

“Going there in vehicles won't serve our purpose as we want to show the truth by meeting our shepherds.

"We were only planning to go there in a small group of 12 persons and were expecting that the government would facilitate our visit to show to the outside world that there is no problem of shepherds being deprived of their pasture lands and not a single inch of our land has gone anywhere,” Mr Wangchuk, who recently observed a 21-day-long hunger strike, said.

On April 7, the LAB withdrew its call for a ‘border (Pashmina) march' after authorities imposed prohibitory orders and announced curtailment of internet speed to 2G besides deploying police and paramilitary forces in large numbers on all entry and exit points on the eve of the proposed march.

“We were of the opinion that this time the small group wouldn't be of any concern to anyone, but the administration spoke about restrictions and the impact on the tourism industry.

"People of Ladakh depend on tourism and having respect and concern for their livelihood, we are suspending the march till the government itself comes forward and facilitates our visit,” he said.

He said they would avoid any confrontation with the administration that could lead to a disturbance of peace.

“By not facilitating our march, all our questions have been answered by the administration,” he said.

The Sixth Schedule of the Constitution for the protection of tribal populations allows the creation of autonomous development councils that administer these areas with powers to make laws on land, forest management, agriculture, etc.

"Good Morning, Mr Trump": Criminal Trial In Hush Money Case Begins

"Good morning, Mr Trump."

The innocuous greeting from a New York judge belied the grim expression on Donald Trump's face as he sat flanked by his lawyers in the Manhattan Criminal Courts Monday.

While his legal team tussled with the prosecution over what evidence could be admitted, the first former US president to face a criminal trial listened intently and -- barring a few words spoken in response to Judge Juan Merchan -- silently.

The case, which could prove enormously consequential for both Trump and the country, is being heard in courtroom 1530 inside an imposing, scaffolding-clad Art Deco courthouse on New York City's Centre Street.

Trump wore his signature red tie with a white shirt, dark blue suit and a US flag lapel pin as Merchan declared the trial open.

The 45th president fixed the magistrate with a defiant look, having accused him of being "corrupt" on his Truth Social platform after Merchan declined repeated calls from the defence to recuse himself.

"We want justice to be done, that's all we want," said the judge.

The case is scheduled to last up to two months and centers on payments made to former adult film star Stormy Daniels as Trump closed in on his 2016 election win.

- 'Political persecution'? -

Trump did not disrupt largely technical proceedings as he has done in other cases.

That includes his civil fraud trial, heard in a nearby courthouse, that resulted in a $355 million civil penalty that he is appealing.

Time may be against Trump, who is campaigning to dislodge President Joe Biden from the White House at November polls, as jury selection alone could take up to two weeks.

More than 100 prospective jurors will be present in court at any one time from a pool of 500.

Trump regularly conferred with the lawyers seated either side of him, shaking his head irritably when prosecutors made comments with which he disagreed.

"It's true," he muttered at one point in response to an audio tape of him boasting about how well he treats women.

However, he did not react when the now-infamous clip of him describing grabbing women by their genitals was played by prosecutors.

Before sitting down and crossing his hands at a brown wooden table where his lawyers spread out their files, the presumptive Republican candidate for the 2024 presidential election set the tone for the trial.

This is an "assault on America" and "political persecution", railed the 77-year-old billionaire who could face prison if convicted.

"It's a country that's failing, it's a country that's run by an incompetent man and is very much involved in this case," Trump said. "This is really an attack on a political opponent, that is all it is, so I'm very honored to be here."

Moments later, five photographers were ushered in to capture the unprecedented scene -- a former president seated at the defendant's table.

Coming Soon, An Online Educational Platform For Poor By Super 30 Founder Anand Kumar

Expanding of his pioneering Super 30 initiative, noted mathematician Anand Kumar has said that he would soon launch a new online platform to take education to the doorsteps of the poor and underprivileged students in India.

Mr Kumar, in his speech at the 2024 Kellogg India Business Conference on the theme "Reimagining India: Shaping the Global Economic Landscape, said that the time has come to tap into the available technology to reach out to more students.

"Time has come to embrace the available technology to reach out to more and more students. Super 30 helped the poor to change their lives and many of the students who were successful did bring about a generational shift due to the power of education," said Mr Kumar at the event organized by the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University.

"A new online educational platform will be launched soon to take education to the doorsteps of the poor," he said.

Maintaining that the disruption caused by the pandemic taught him a lot, Mr Kumar said he was connected through social media with students stuck in home, underlining how one could learn a lot from adversities.

"The world is full of talented people. Even in the present scenario, there are so many children hidden from the eyes of the world due to poverty. They have ability to become Newton and Ramanujan but perhaps their talent gets lost due to a lack of opportunity. My online initiative is aimed at giving them the platform to excel," he added.

Mr Kumar said it has been his dream to see every underprivileged student educated. "The poorest also deserve quality education. Time has come to move out of the labs to get a feel of poverty in nations and villages, where people don't even get electricity, clean water and proper food. Now the time has come and technology is also there to connect with the poor irrespective of region," he said.

The best use of technology, said Mr Kumar, would be to ensure that opportunities must reach the have-nots, as this was the responsibility of the society.

"I am not a big personality, just an ordinary teacher but today, I am telling you from the core of my heart on the basis of my feelings, and my experiences if you have keen desire for certain goal and you continue hard work, you will achieve it. It is possible that it will take a longer time. More time than you thought. But success will come definitely," Mr Kumar said.

Man Smashes Friend's Face With Stone For Sending "Obscene" Pics To Lover

A man allegedly stoned his friend to death here in Dwarka's Sector 21 after he did not cease sending "objectionable" photos to a common female friend, police said on Saturday.

A disfigured body of Ashish Kumar, a native of Uttar Pradesh's Raebareli, was recovered from a jungle behind Dwarka Sector 21 Metro Station on April 9, they said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Ankit Singh said the body was identified with the help of a technical analysis.

During the investigation, police zeroed in on Suresh Gangwar, a native of Uttar Pradesh's Rampur, and a close friend of Ashish, Singh said.

When interrogated in detention, Suresh told police that he and Ashish used to work as security guards in a company in Assam.

While at work, Ashish used to talk to his girlfriend on Suresh's mobile phone.

Later, the two moved to another company in Rajasthan, but Suresh quit the job soon due to some dispute and shifted to Delhi, the officer said.

"In the meantime, Ashish realised that his girlfriend had started distancing herself from him and become close to Suresh," another police officer said.

"This filled Ashish with anger and he sent some objectionable pictures to his former girlfriend," the officer said.

Suresh then called Ashish and asked him to delete the photos but he did not and kept sending them.

Suresh made a plan to eliminate Ashish luring him to the national capital with an offer of plentiful work and the chance of making good money, the officer added.

On April 9, Ashish came to Delhi. Suresh took him to the jungle where he hit him with a heavy stone multiple times and slit his throat with a knife.

He also smashed his face to prevent identification of the body and fled the spot after breaking his phone, police said.

After 5 Years With Congress, Former MP Manvendra Singh Rejoins BJP

Former BJP MP Manvendra Singh, son of former Union minister Jaswant Singh, returned to the party on Friday following a five-year stint with the Congress.

Mr Singh, who had switched to Congress in October 2018, joined the BJP ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally in Barmer. He also shared the stage with other leaders of the BJP during the PM's rally.

"Today I rejoined the BJP family and party workers in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Bhai Modi at Adarsh Stadium in Barmer. We are all committed to realising the public welfare policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the resolution of 'Vikshit Bharat'," he said in a Facebook post.

Mr Singh was elected as the BJP MLA from Barmer's Sheo assembly constituency in December 2013.

When the BJP denied a ticket to Jaswant Singh, who then contested the Lok Sabha election as an independent and lost, Manvendra Singh turned rebel and campaigned against the party's candidate in support of his father.

Manvendra Singh was suspended from the party ahead of the 2018 assembly elections.

He joined the Congress, which gave him a ticket for the Jhalrapatan assembly seat against the then-chief minister Vasundhara Raje. He lost the election.

What PM Modi Said At Meet To Review Preparedness For Heatwave

Amid a forecast for extreme weather conditions in summer months, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday reviewed the preparedness for heatwave conditions and called for all arms of governments at central, state and district levels to work in synergy.

An official statement said PM Modi chaired a meeting where he was briefed about the likelihood of above-normal maximum temperatures over most parts of the country during April-June, with high probability of such conditions in central western peninsular India.

Preparedness in the health sector was reviewed in terms of availability of essential medicines, intravenous fluids, ice packs, ORS and drinking water, the statement said.

The timely dissemination of essential information, education and communication (IEC) awareness material, especially in regional languages, through all platforms such as television, radio and social media was stressed upon at the meeting, it said.

"Since a hotter than normal summer is expected in 2024, which coincides with the General Elections, it was felt that the advisories issued by the Health Ministry and NDMA be translated into regional languages and disseminated widely," it said.

PM Modi stressed upon the whole of government approach and said all arms of the government at central, state and district levels, besides various ministries, need to work on this in synergy.

He also stressed upon awareness creation along with adequate preparation in hospitals, highlighting the need for quick detection and putting out forest fires.

"We Must Have A Fine Balance Of Innovation And Regulation": Union Minister

Generative AI is a relatively new phenomenon, and a fine balance must be struck between innovation and regulation to safeguard social structures and ensure progress, Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Wednesday.

Speaking at a seminar by Women Journalist Welfare Trust, the minister said while technology and AI are making lives easier with transformative powers, if left without safeguards they also pose a downside risk to age-old established structures, and hence a new set of regulations and legislations are required.

"There is a very risky side, which is affecting our society, democracy, and many of the social structures that were meticulously built over decades and centuries. Many of the institutions that were meant to protect society and make sure that we all live in a harmonious way are under attack," he said.

The minister said despite existing in the industrial world for three decades, AI as a generative AI, that can be used by a normal user, is a new thing.

AI to create things which were normally associated with human creativity, was a totally new phenomenon, and this created a new challenge, he said.

"We must come out with some consensus on the way forward by which society can proceed. We, in India, believe that we must have a fine balance of innovation and regulation.

"We must have a very consultative process through which we come out with the final policy. We must make sure that every stakeholder's voice is heard, understood, and properly well-analysed," he said.

With the advent of social media, he said "connectivity became ubiquitous, everybody had a mobile phone, and everybody started having good data connectivity".

"One of the ministers responsible for this subject in Europe told me that the institutions that were built over 400 years ago are getting destroyed by social media," Mr Vaishnaw said.

The minister said a significant reduction was witnessed in the price of computing, connectivity, and sensors. But it made the internet highly accessible to everybody, he said.

The internet in a sense, exploded. It became very easy for anybody to post anything, then it started creating social tensions, Vaishnaw said.

He said the old structure was a safe harbor structure, where to promote innovation in the internet, liability was never kept up on the internet service provider.

In the new structure, he said, there are millions of people posting millions of things on the internet. "The question is, whose liability should it be? That's the fundamental question." Vaishnaw further said societies across the world, including the most liberal, market-oriented, socialist, as well as the most state-controlled countries, are debating the issue.

"Everywhere the same question is being asked: what should be the new regulatory regime for social media platforms, and who should take the liability? Where should the accountability be? Who should be responsible for what is published on the social media platform? "We have to find a solution, we have to come up with a proper balance. And we have to make sure that our social structures our society, and the way we want to move forward are properly protected," he said.

Trinamool vs BJP Over Anti-Terror Agency NIA Attacked By Mob In Bengal

Senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee on Tuesday accused the BJP of "murdering" democracy ahead of the "festival of democracy", and predicted that the saffron camp would face complete decimation in the state in the Lok Sabha polls.

Mr Banerjee's remark drew sharp reactions from the BJP, which claimed that the TMC was tense as it felt that ground was slipping from under its feet.

"The BJP is wary about the outcome of the Lok Sabha results in Bengal and India. That is why they are desperate to murder democracy, and that too during the biggest festival of democracy - the Lok Sabha polls," Mr Banerjee told reporters here.

He alleged that there is a collusion between the BJP and central agencies, such as the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED), to harass the opposition parties.

"The BJP knows it can't win on its own after 10 years of anti-incumbency and misrule. So they have engaged their trusted allies, the ED, CBI, and NIA, I-T (income tax department), to harass and arrest leaders of the opposition camp. We have no problem if these agencies take action against the real culprits, but we are against witch-hunting," he said.

A team of the NIA was allegedly attacked by a mob on April 6 when it went to arrest two main suspects in the 2022 blast in Purba Medinipur district, sparking a political slugfest with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accusing the investigators of assaulting villagers there.

Reacting to Abhishek's remarks, BJP state spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya dubbed the allegations as baseless.

"The BJP is confident of its victory and achieving the target of 35 seats. It is the TMC that has sensed defeat and its political ground is slipping beneath its feet. That is why they are making such baseless allegations," he said.

In 2019, the TMC had won 22 Lok Sabha seats, whereas the BJP had put up its best performance by bagging 18, while the Congress won just two.

Rajnath Singh Draws From Bollywood To Take A Swipe At Congress

Taking dig at Congress over its "relationship with corruption", Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recalled a bollywood song "Aaja Sham Hone Aayee...tu chal mai aayee" and said whenever the Congress forms government, corruption follows itself in a similar manner.

The Union Minister mocked the Congress by recalling the songs from bollywood movies Ek Duuje Ke Liye (1981) and Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), he said that the name of the movie Ek Dujhe Ke Liye is similar to Congress relationship with corruption.

Further, he mentioned a song from Maine Pyar Kiya movie "Aaja Sham Hone Aayee...tu chal mai aayee", is like when Congress forms government corruption follows.

Mr Singh pushed for 'One Nation One Election' at the election rally in Bikaner and Jhunjunu in Rajasthan.

Mr Singh stressed on Sunday that there must be 'one nation and one election' to save time and resources for the nation, adding he said that the Congress party will only oppose it.

"There must be One Nation, One Election. Centre had formed a committee under the leadership of former President Ram Nath Kovind. The committee has submitted its reports to the President. I believe the people of the nation will support us," the senior BJP leader said.

He was addressing a public rally for senior minister and BJP candidate Arjun Ram Meghwal from Bikaner and Jhunjunu candidate ShubhKaran Choudhary.

"Four months ago, I came to Rajasthan for an election campaign, and again, I am here for the election campaign. One Nation One Election will save time, money, and resources," he said.

He added that the committee headed by former president Ram Nath Kovind has submitted their report. One Nation One Election will ensure election from Gram Sabha to General election to be held simultaneously.

In his speech, he praised Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma's government crackdown on criminals and improved law and order situation in the state.

"Ever since Bhajan Lal Sharma's government came to power in Rajasthan, the law and order situation has improved a lot. A large number of criminals have been sent to jail. I congratulate Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma for improving the law and order situation in Rajasthan," he said.

He said that PM Modi always thinks of the country's progress and BJP never does religion based politics.

"We consider the public as Janardan, whereas the Congress people consider their own family as Janardan. This is the difference in thinking. That is why the country is moving ahead under the leadership of Modiji," he said.

"Whenever the Congress government has been in power, some scam or the other has definitely taken place. Even their ministers had to go to jail. Whereas there is not a single stain of corruption on his government," he added.

Bureaucrat Sheds Light On "Real Situation" Of Placements In IITs. See Post

A lot of students aspire to join prestigious institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) with the hope of securing good placements. However, the ground reality of employment opportunities at such institutions often remains veiled. Recently, Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer Gaurav Garg took to X (formerly Twitter) to share four significant points about placements in IITs. "More often than not, we hear about students at #IITs getting #salary in Crores. What is the real situation of placement at #IIT?" Mr Garg wrote.

In his post, the IFS officer highlighted the wide spectrum of salary packages received by fresh graduates from IITs, ranging from Rs 6 lakh to Rs 35 lakh. Notably, graduates from Computer Science (CSE) and Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) tend to command higher packages.

Mr Garg also pointed out that a significant portion of high-paying job offers, often in the crore range, primarily come from companies based in the US, Singapore and other foreign countries. These offers, predominantly in coding domains, come from tech giants like Google, Facebook and X.

Then, Mr Gard said, "The salary packages include the ESOPs (Employee Stock Ownership Plans), leave encashment, staggered payments in 4-5 years etc. Sometimes, the in-hand salary is only 40-50% of #CTC (Cost to Company) quoted".

In the end, he added, "Average salary package offered (except computer science) is 10-12 Lacs per annum with core branches like mechanical, civil engineering getting placed on the lower side".

IIT Bombay Clarifies Placement Status Amid 36% Unplaced Students Report

In response to reports showing that 36% of graduates at IIT Bombay are yet to secure jobs this placement season, the institute has released data from an exit survey conducted among graduating students in the academic year 2022-23.

According to the survey result shared by the institute, only 6.1% of graduates are looking for jobs, while the majority of students, accounting for 57.1%, secured jobs through IIT Bombay's placement process. Additionally, 12.2% of students opted to pursue higher degrees, while 8.3% chose careers in public service.

Furthermore, a breakdown of employment preferences among students reveals that 10.9% secured jobs outside of IIT Bombay, with 1.6% venturing into startup ventures. A small percentage, 4.3%, remain undecided about their career paths.

The institute has released these statistics to address concerns and clarify job prospects for its students amidst the ongoing economic challenges.

According to a report in the Hindustan Times, approximately 712 out of the 2,000 registered students are still without job offers this session. "It was a struggle to invite companies to the campus compared to last year due to the global economic meltdown," said an officer from IIT Bombay's placement cell, as quoted by HT.

"The majority of companies faced challenges in accepting the salary packages predetermined by the institute, requiring several rounds of negotiation before they agreed to participate," the officer added.

The officer noted that, for the first time, students registered in the Computer Science and Engineering branch, typically highly sought-after, did not achieve full placement among those enrolled. The placement process at IIT Bombay is currently in progress and will continue until May 2024.

This year witnessed a rise in the percentage of students without placements, with 35.8% remaining unplaced, marking a 2.8 percentage point increase compared to the previous session. In 2023, the HT report states that out of the 2,209 students registered at IIT Bombay, 1,485 had secured jobs, leaving 32.8% unplaced.

A significant number of the 380 companies that participated in the placement drive were domestic, contrary to the usual trend of more international firms, it adds.

In January, reports surfaced that 85 students at IIT Bombay received job offers with annual packages worth Rs 1 crore. Later, the institute had issued a clarification stating that only 22 students had received packages worth Rs 1 crore.

"The phase-I placements (December 1-20, 2023) incorrectly reported the number of accepted ₹1 crore plus offers as 85. The correct number of accepted one crore plus offers is 22. All other data reported is confirmed to be correct. The Placement Office of IIT Bombay strongly regrets this mistake," the official statement read.

Hamas Chief Accuses Israel Of Procrastination In Truce Talks

Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh accused Israel on Wednesday of procrastinating in stalled talks to secure a ceasefire in the Gaza war and a hostage release deal.

Recent negotiations have made little progress and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the Palestinian Hamas group has hardened its position.

"The Zionist occupation continues to procrastinate stubbornly, and does not respond to our fair demands for an end to the war and aggression," Haniyeh said in a recorded speech shown at a Hezbollah meeting.

Netanyahu's office said on Tuesday that Israel's negotiating team had returned from another round of discussions in Cairo.

"In the framework of the talks, under useful Egyptian mediation, the mediators formulated an updated proposal for Hamas," the premier's office said.

However, senior Hamas official Bassem Naim said on Tuesday that the group had not been sent any new proposals.

"The movement has not received any proposals from the mediators or the occupation (Israel) regarding a ceasefire and a prisoner exchange deal", he said.

In his speech shown on Wednesday ahead of comments from Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, the Qatar-based Haniyeh reiterated Hamas's conditions for peace.

These include a permanent ceasefire, a full Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, the return of displaced Gazans, unhindered entry of aid, full reconstruction of the war-ravaged territory, and "a respectable prisoner exchange deal."

Haniyeh also denounced what he said was "direct American participation" in the war in Gaza by supplying weapons and ammunition to the Israeli military.

Ex-MLA Debaraj Mohanty Resigns From BJP After Being Denied Party Ticket

Debraj Mohanty, former MLA from Aska in Odisha's Ganjam district, resigned from the BJP after being denied ticket to contest the assembly election.

On Tuesday, the BJP announced 112 candidates, including 12 in Ganjam district out of 13 assembly seats.

Debraj Mohanty, a BJD legislator from Aska in 2000, 2009 and 2014, sent his resignation to party state president Manmohan Samal.

Ahead of the 2019 election, he had resigned from the BJD after being denied a ticket and joined the saffron party. He unsuccessfully contested in the last election.

"Since I joined the BJP, I have been actively involved in all party activities in Aska. But the party did not give me a ticket," said the 71-year-old Debraj Mohanty.

In place of Debraj Mohanty, BJP has fielded Saroj Padhi, also a former MLA. Padhi was elected to the assembly in 2004 as an Independent.

"I will consult my supporters to decide on the future course of action," Debraj Mohanty said.

He has also not ruled out returning to BJD if given a ticket.

The BJD and Congress are yet to declare their candidates for Aska.

S Jaishankar On " Very Clear Instructions From PM" Over Russia-Ukraine War

Heaping praise on the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that India was able to keep a firm stand during the Russia-Ukraine conflict because there were "clear instructions" from the top leadership.

He said that PM Modi had given clear instructions to keep the interest of Indian consumers in priority despite external pressure against purchasing Russian oil.

"The biggest change that has taken place is that the same ministries and bureaucrats are now judged on the basis of their performance. So, it's about leadership and motivation," S Jaishankar said during an interaction in Rajkot, Gujarat.

Recalling the time of conflict, he said PM Modi had asked to put all the efforts in evacuating the Indian students.

"When we sensed that tensions were increasing in Ukraine, we asked the Indian students to evacuate...once the war started, I got very clear instructions that do whatever you want to at whatever cost, put the whole ministry in action, but bring all the Indian students back. That's what happens when you get clear instructions," he said.

He said that India kept the interest of its consumers on priority while purchasing Russian oil, despite external pressure.

"As people know, there was a lot of pressure on us not to buy oil from Ukraine. If we had not purchased oil from Russia, we would had to purchase from Gulf nations. It would have increased the oil prices. What you are getting at Rs 100 would have cost Rs 125," S Jaishankar said.

"I was asked how was I able to keep such a clear position despite so much pressure. I was able to because I had very clear instructions from the Prime Minister. I was told that to keep the interest of Indian consumers a priority," he added.

Recalling another serious issue during the conflict, the EAM said how the officials went to Ukraine to evacuate the students.

"During the war in Ukraine, firing was so intense in an area, that the stranded students said that they wouldn't leave their hostels unless someone from our side came there. I called my officers and two of them were sent to evacuate the students. Both of them were very brave, but I can say everyone in the room was ready to go. This is the change today," S Jaishankar further said.

"National Security Is Our Topmost Priority", Says Sonam Wangchuk

Statehood and constitutional protection under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution will not impact defence and national security-related projects in Ladakh, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk said on Tuesday. Sonam Wangchuk said this during an online meeting with climate groups and civil society organisations, convened to review preparations for the planned march to Changthang (in the east of Leh along the border with China) on April 7.

He recently went on a 21-day fast, surviving only on salt and water, to demand that Ladakh be given statehood and included under the Sixth Schedule, which will help protect the ecologically fragile region from "greedy" industries.

When a participant asked if the campaign to demand Ladakh's inclusion in the Sixth Schedule will impact defence and national security-related projects in border areas, Sonam Wangchuk said, "National security is our topmost priority. It's paramount. We are seeking protection from mindless exploitation by industries." In an online press conference last week, Sonam Wangchuk had said: "While industries exploit the riches of the Himalayas, the local people bear the brunt of disasters. The government uses taxpayers' money for rehabilitation efforts. So, those who reap the benefits are not held accountable." "Bureaucrats from places like Chandigarh or Lucknow may not fully understand its fragility. The best of all could make mistakes and the worst of all would sell it off to industries," he had said.

Post the repeal of Article 370, Ladakh became a separate Union Territory "without legislature". The Buddhist-dominated Leh district had long demanded UT status because it felt neglected by the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir government.

However, with the administration of the region now completely in the hands of bureaucrats, many in Ladakh demand that the UT be included in the Sixth Schedule, which provides for the formation of Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) with legislative, judicial, and administrative autonomy within a state.

These councils administer areas under their jurisdiction, making laws on specific matters with the governor's assent. They can establish village councils or courts for dispute resolution and can manage facilities and services within their areas, including education and healthcare. They also have the authority to impose taxes and regulate certain activities.

Ladakh's only MP, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal of the BJP, had previously demanded that the region be included in the Sixth Schedule to safeguard land, employment, and cultural identity of the local population.

Union Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda had in 2019 promised to do "whatever is required from a constitutional perspective to protect them".

In September 2019, the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) wrote to Home Minister Amit Shah and Munda, recommending that Ladakh be declared a tribal area under the Sixth Schedule.

Not only has the government failed to deliver on its promise, but it is also not providing a reason for not doing so, Sonam Wangchuk said.

"After four years of avoiding our demands, in a meeting on March 4, they clearly said no," he said, adding that the people of Ladakh would now hold them accountable for the promises they made during the last general elections. On the lines of Mahatma Gandhi's Dandi March, Sonam Wangchuk has planned the 'border march' on April 7 to show "destruction in the name of development".

Israel Approves Bill To Allow Al Jazeera Broadcast Ban Amid Hamas War

The Israeli parliament passed a bill Monday giving top ministers the authority to bar from Israel the broadcasts of news channel Al Jazeera -- a step Premier Benjamin Netanyahu is poised to take.

This law, which passed by 70 votes to 10, carries the authority to ban the broadcast of content from foreign channels but also allows the closing of their offices in Israel.

Netanyahu has vowed to take "immediate action" to shut down Al Jazeera in Israel once the law passes.

Israel had claimed in January that an Al Jazeera staff journalist and a freelancer killed in an air strike in Gaza were "terror operatives".

The following month it said another journalist for the channel, wounded in a separate strike, was a "deputy company commander" with Hamas.

Israeli troops have been fighting against Hamas in Gaza since October.

Al Jazeera has fiercely denied the accusations and accused Israel of systematically targeting Al Jazeera employees in the Gaza Strip.

The bill permitting officials to stop foreign media deemed to harm national security had already passed its first parliamentary hurdle last month.

Netanyahu's Likud party said he asked "to make sure that the law to close Al Jazeera will be approved this evening" in Israel's parliament, the Knesset.

Al Jazeera's bureau chief in the Palestinian territory, Wael al-Dahdouh, was also wounded, in an Israeli strike in December that killed the network's cameraman.

The war between Israel and Hamas began with the militant group's October 7 attack that resulted in about 1,160 deaths in Israel, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

Israel's retaliatory campaign has killed at least 32,845 people, mostly women and children, according to the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza.
