The events included the inauguration of Ayodhya Dham Junction, Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, and the flagging off of 6 Vande Bharat and 2 Amrit Bharat trains.

"The strength of Modi's guarantee lies in the fact that Modi does what he promises. Today, the country has faith in Modi's guarantee because he puts in all his efforts to fulfill the guarantees he gives. This city of Ayodhya is also a witness to this," he stated.

Expressing eagerness for the upcoming consecration at the Ram Temple, PM Modi proclaimed himself a devotee of every particle and person in India.

PM Modi reached Ayodhya on a one-day visit, where he inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of 46 projects worth Rs 15700 crore. Along with inaugurating Ayodhya Dham Junction and Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, PM Modi also flagged off 6 Vande Bharat and 2 Amrit Bharat trains.

Our heritage inspires us. Shows us the right path. Present-day India is progressing by seamlessly blending the old and the new. There was a time when Ramlala resided in a tent in Ayodhya. Today, not only has Ram Lalla found a permanent abode, but also four crore impoverished citizens of the country have been provided with homes," PM Modi added.

The Prime Minister further said that while India is beautifying its pilgrimages, India is also immersed in digital technology

Babri Masjid Slogan Scribbled On Campus, JNU Orders Repainting Of Walls

A day after a slogan demanding Babri Masjid reconstruction surfaced on a wall of Jawaharlal Nehru University's School of Languages, the university on Friday ordered the repainting of all walls on the campus to remove any slogan or graffiti.

In a meeting with a committee tasked with probing repeated incidents of controversial sloganeering and defacement of walls, the administration asked officials to ramp up security arrangements in all schools of the university.

"We have asked the committee members to visit all schools and submit a report in the next one week on requirements for CCTV cameras in each school after discussions with the respective deans," a senior official told PTI.

The JNU administration has ordered to repaint all walls on the campus to remove any kind of slogan or graffiti, the official said, adding CCTV cameras will be installed in identified areas.

According to university students, the administration on Thursday evening white washed the walls on which the slogan was scribbled. They, however, claimed that in the process sketches of freedom fighters and that of two prime ministers were also wiped off.

The slogan demanding that Babri Masjid be rebuilt appeared on a wall on the first floor of the School of Language building with the "NSUI" written below. Photos of the graffiti soon surfaced on social media, sparking a controversy.

The student outfit distanced themselves from the slogan and demanded an investigation by the administration.

"NSUI-JNU firmly condemns this malicious, disruptive act of defacement and maligning our organisation's name. We are absolutely clear that defacing an organization's wall sketches is not a way to give any socio-political message. We also demand the university administration conduct an impartial investigation into the matter," the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) said in a statement.

The university administration initially denied photos of the graffiti circulating on social media were from the university, but later said it was not aware if it was painted on the campus.

Rajasthan Cabinet Expansion Tomorrow, 3 MPs-Turned-MLAs Likely To Be Included

Amid questions over the delay, the expansion of the Rajasthan cabinet will take place on Saturday, with the BJP seeking to strike a balance between new and experienced faces as well as caste equations. Sources have told NDTV that between 22 and 25 MLAs are expected to take oath as ministers and three MPs-turned-MLAs, who have resigned from the Lok Sabha, are likely to find a place in the cabinet.

The BJP had sprung a surprise in the state when it picked first-time MLA Bhajan Lal Sharma as the chief minister and Diya Kumari and Prem Chand Bairwa as his deputies.

Three key contenders for a place in Mr Sharma's cabinet are Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore from the Jhotwara assembly constituency, Kirodi Lal Meena from the Sawai Madhopur seat and Baba Balak Nath from the Tijara constituency. At least two of these three former MPs were seen as frontrunners for the chief minister's post and had resigned from the Lok Sabha after the election results were declared. Baba Balak Nath is popularly called the 'Yogi of Rajasthan'.

Among the other frontrunners are Mahant Pratap Puri, who had defeated a sitting Congress minister in Pokaran in western Rajasthan, and former minister and five-time MLA Anita Bhadel.

Some of the other probables are: Jhabar Singh Kharra, Jogeshwar Garg, Sumit Godara, Deepti Kiran Maheshwari, Pabba Ram Bishnoi, Bhera Ram Siyol, Nauksham Chaudhary, Jitendra Gothwal, Jawahar Singh Bedam, Udayalal Bhadana, Shrichand Kriplani, Hansraj Patel, Jethanand Vyas, Phool Singh Meena, Ajay Singh Kilak, Sidhi Kumari, Pushpendra Singh Ranawat, Kailash Verma, Sanjay Sharma, Shailesh Singh, Shatrughan Gautam, Manju Baghmar, Heeralal Nagar, Pratap Singh Singhvi and Madan Dilawar.

OBC Faces?

Bhajan Lal Sharma is a Brahmin while Diya Kumari is a Rajput and Prem Chand Bairwa is a scheduled caste leader. To balance caste equations, the cabinet is expected to see faces from the Other Backward Classes (OBCs), which make up 35-40% of the state's population.

Mr Sharma, who had taken oath on December 15, was in Delhi last week and had met the BJP brass, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and party president JP Nadda. Probable names for the cabinet were said to have been discussed.

In last-month's elections, the results of which were declared on December 3, the BJP had won 115 of the state's 200 seats. The Congress, under Ashok Gehlot, which was hoping that its welfare schemes would help it buck the state's revolving-door trend, was reduced to 69 seats. The party has questioned the BJP over the delay in the cabinet expansion.

Governor Kalraj Mishra will administer the oath of office to the ministers at the Raj Bhavan in Jaipur at 3:15 pm. The state can have a maximum of 30 ministers, including the chief minister.

UP Siblings Who Left Home After Being Scolded Meet Mother After 13 Years

Two siblings aged 22 and 19 years who left home 13 years ago after being scolded by their mother have been reunited with her with the help of a child rights activist.

The siblings -- Rakhi and her brother Babloo -- left home in Bilasganj locality of Agra at the age of nine and six years and spent time at children's homes in Noida and Lucknow.

They first reunited with each other through social media in 2018 and then started searching for their mother.

Rakhi now works at a mall in Gurugram, while her brother Babloo is employed with a company in Bengaluru. Babloo said that a rail engine placed outside Agra Cantt station made him recall that he is from Agra.

"We both left home when our mother scolded us. After that, we asked a rickshaw driver to drop us at the residence of 'nani' (maternal grandmother) in the city. But he dropped us at a station in Agra. Then we reached Meerut railway station where we were caught by a member of Childline who sent us to the children's homes in Lucknow and Noida," Babloo told PTI over phone.

"During my stay in a children's home in Lucknow, I got training for mobile repairing. I was released from the home as I turned 18 and sent to a company in Chennai dealing in mobile repairing work," he added.

"From there I moved to Bengaluru and began working at a private company. I kept searching for my sister and mother," Babloo said, adding that he found his sister in 2018 through social media and then they began searching for mother Neetu Kumari.

Naresh Paras, the child rights activist in Agra who helped the sister-brother duo find their mother, said, "I got requests from them last week. After that, I began searching for their family."

"When Rakhi and Babloo left home, they were caught at Meerut station. At that time, it seems they forgot their exact address and mentioned their locality Bilasganj as Bilaspur. For me, it was difficult to search the exact address of the children," Paras said.

The activist said that he also sought help from the Agra police.

"I got information that a missing complaint was lodged on June 16, 2010 by the mother of two children at Jagdishpura police station. I got the address and tried to contact the mother, but she had shifted to another locality," he added.

Paras said finally, he managed to locate the place where Neetu was living.

"I informed Neetu about her two children, she was too happy and excited to meet both the children. While Rakhi reached Agra from Gurugram and met her mother, Babloo joined them through a video call from Bengaluru," Paras added.

After speaking to his mother, Babloo said, "It was a very emotional moment for me to speak to my mother and sister. I am thankful to Naresh Paras."

Patient Sexually Assaulted After Surgery At Private Hospital In Gurugram

A woman has accused a staff member of a private hospital of sexually assaulting her during her treatment, police said.

According to the complaint filed by the 34-year-old woman, she fell ill on December 18 and reached the hospital with her husband around 11:00 pm. After examining her, the doctor admitted her and a minor surgery was done. She said she was feeling good after the surgery.

"Permanent Husband": Case Against RSS Leader For Triple Talaq Remarks

A case has been filed against an RSS leader in Karnataka for his alleged remark that while Muslim men are unhappy with the BJP government at the Centre for passing a bill declaring triple talaq illegal, Muslim women are happy because they now have a "permanent husband".

In a speech during an event in Karnataka's Srirangapatna on Sunday, RSS Leader Prabhakar Bhat Kalladka had said, "Until recently, the practice of divorce through triple talaq was legal, but it has been done away with since the Modi government came to power. Muslim men must be very unhappy about this."

"But the Muslim women must be very happy with this move as they used to have a new husband every day because they used to say talaq, talaq, talaq and leave. They couldn't say they have a life-long husband. It's the Modi government that has given you a permanent husband," Mr Kalladka said.

The event, called the Sankeerna Yatra, was organised by a right-wing outfit, the Hindu Jagrana Vedike.

After the statement went viral on social media, a social worker, Nazia Nazeer, filed a complaint at the Srirangapatna police station. A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against Mr Kalladka under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those pertaining to promoting enmity between groups, outraging religious feelings and insulting the modesty of a woman.

The practice of divorce through triple talaq had been deemed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 2017 and the Parliament passed a law declaring it illegal in 2019.

Toddlers, Teens Among 13 Unescorted Children On Plane Grounded In France

Thirteen unaccompanied minors are among the more than 300 Indian passengers of a Nicaragua-bound plane held in France over suspected human trafficking, authorities told AFP on Saturday.

The Airbus A340 has been held at Vatry airport, 150 kilometres (95 miles) east of Paris, since arriving from Dubai on Thursday following an anonymous tip-off that it was carrying potential victims of human trafficking.

The civilian protection unit of the Marne department said the plane was carrying 13 unaccompanied minors as well as accompanied minors, with their ages ranging from 21 months to 17 years.

The 303 passengers of the flight operated by Romanian company Legend Airlines were still in the airport's entrance hall on Saturday morning, an AFP reporter saw.

Two passengers were in custody on Friday as part of the investigation.

Liliana Bakayoko, a lawyer for the airline, said all crew members had been questioned and allowed to leave.

Jailed Imran Khan's Nomination Papers Submitted For Upcoming Pak Election

Disqualified and jailed former prime minister Imran Khan on Friday had his nomination papers submitted at Mianwali, his home constituency in Punjab province, for the February 8 general elections.

Imran Khan, the 71-year-old founder of the Tehreek-e-Insaf was convicted in what is known as the Toshakhana corruption case on August 5 this year, a charge that also disqualified him from contesting any elections for five years.

Imran Khan filed a plea in the Islamabad High Court, which turned it down, prompting his party to move the Supreme Court.

The cricketer-turned-politician did get a bail from the Supreme court but he remains in jail on account of his arrest in two other cases.

On Friday, the last day of filing nominations, PTI leader Umar Bodla appeared on behalf of the former prime minister and submitted Imran Khan's nomination papers for the National Assembly's NA-89 constituency, according to Geo News.

According to the revised poll schedule announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the prospective candidates could submit their nomination papers by Sunday.

The scrutiny of nomination papers will be held from December 24 to 30.

"Khan's legal team says that the district court, which sent Khan to jail and had him disqualified, gave a baseless judgment," Geo News added.

Earlier in the day, in a relief to Imran Khan, Pakistan's Supreme Court approved his and close aide Shah Mahmood Qureshi's bail in the cipher case related to the alleged leakage of state secrets.

The case is based on the allegation that a diplomatic document sent by the Pakistan embassy in March last year was mishandled by Imran Khan and Qureshi, 67, and they violated the secrecy laws of the country.

Meanwhile, a detailed statement by the PTI on its official handle on platform X expressed gratitude and satisfaction on behalf of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf in connection with the bails in the cipher case and said, "With the approval of the guarantees of Founder Chairman Imran Khan and Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the false and fake political case like cipher based on malice, and enmity has died." "The only purpose of this fabricated and baseless case was to get the founder chairman Imran Khan to compromise on the principles and withdraw from the movement for the supremacy of the constitution and law in the country," it said.

"The ongoing illegal crackdown against Tehreek-e-Insaf candidates across the country before the elections and the shameful attempts to exclude Tehreek-e-Insaf from the elections through state coercion confirm the validity of the position of Imran Khan, founder chairman of Cipher," it said.

The statement also demanded that Imran Khan and Qureshi be released immediately and "prevented from being arrested in any false case." Apart from this official statement, the PTI X handle has been tweeting all day multiple videos showing how their candidates have been deprived of filing nomination papers.

In a separate hearing earlier in the day of a petition filed by Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, the Supreme Court also instructed the ECP to address the concerns of the jailed former prime minister's party about the lack of a level playing field in the upcoming February 8 general elections.

The court summoned Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan and the ECP officials and after hearing the arguments, asked the PTI to submit its complaint to the top polls body on Friday. It also directed the attorney general to facilitate the two sides to address the issue.

Former Maharashtra Minister, 5 Others Jailed For In Bank Scam

A magistrate's court here on Friday sentenced Congress MLA and former Maharashtra minister Sunil Kedar and five others to five years' rigourous imprisonment for misappropriation of funds at the Nagpur District Central Cooperative Bank (NDCCB).

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate J V Pekhle-Purkar pronounced judgement in the case which dates back to 2002. The six were also fined Rs 10 lakh each.

Apart from Sunil Kedar, the accused include the general manager and directors of NDCCB and a director of Home Trade Private Limited, an investment firm. Three persons were acquitted.

Among other provisions, Sunil Kedar was held guilty under Indian Penal Code section 409 (criminal breach of trust by a public servant).

As per the prosecution, the NDCCB lost Rs 125 crore in government securities in 2002 as rules were violated while investing funds through Home Trade Private Limited. Sunil Kedar was then chairman of the bank.

In her judgement, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Pekhle-Purkar said Sunil Kedar and one other accused were entrusted with the entire stake of the bank, adding that the fund in question was hard earned money of the people and members of the bank, most of whom are poor farmers from here.

The court pointed out that the objective and purpose of the cooperative sector is to enhance the status of the economically marginalised sections of the society.

The court said Sunil Kedar, who was chairman at the time, and then general manager Ashok Choudhary were entrusted to invest the funds in the manner prescribed by the law but they committed breach of trust.

Such criminal breach of trust is a serious offence, the judge said in her order.

The loss of such a huge amount of money is sufficient enough to bring down the financial position of the bank, which in turn would affect thousands of members and staff of the entity, the court said.

People holding high posts are vested with more responsibilities to ensure not even a single rupee of a member is wasted in any manner, the court order said.

"Therefore, the breach of trust by such responsible persons invites this court to deal with such persons with steel hands. In view of the seriousness of the offences, no leniency can be shown to the accused persons," the court asserted.

Those sentenced in the case under sections 409 and 120B of the Indian Penal Code and section 248 of the Code of Criminal Procedure are Sunil Kedar, general manager Ashok Choudhary, Ketan Seth, Amit Verma, Subodh Bhandari and Nandkishore Trivedi.

"January 22, 2024 As Important As August 15": Ram Temple Trust Chief

Ahead of the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple's consecration ceremony next month, General Secretary of the Sri Ram Janambhoomi Trust, Champat Rai, today compared the day of January 22 next year with India's Independence Day - August 15.

"January 22, 2024, is as important as August 15, 1947. It is equally important as getting Kargil back, and as much as the detention of a lakh soldiers was important in 1971," Champat Rai said.

There is a feeling of satisfaction among the people of Ayodhya over the construction of the temple which has become an 'instrument to unite India', he said.

"There is a feeling of satisfaction. The people of Ayodhya, small princely states of the neighbourhood, priests, teachers and all the saints from all over India after 1983, started getting associated with it. The subject which was limited only to Ayodhya has become the subject of the respect of the entire country," he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attend the installation of the idol of Ram Lalla at the temple on January 22. Preparations are underway in full swing for the event, which will draw dignitaries and people from all walks of life.

Apart from political and religious leaders, actors, including Amitabh Bachchan, have been invited to the 'Pran Pratishtha' ceremony of the temple.

The Sri Ram Janmabhoomi Tirath Kshetra Trust has decided to enthrone Ram Lalla at the sanctum-sanctorum of the temple at noon on January 22. The trust has also invited 4,000 saints to the ceremony.

Vedic rituals at the consecration ceremony will begin on January 16, a week before the main event.

A priest from Varanasi, Lakshmi Kant Dixit, will perform the rituals of the consecration ceremony on January 22. From January 14 to January 22, Ayodhya will celebrate Amrit Mahautsav.

A 1,008 Hundi Mahayagya will also be organised, in which thousands of devotees will be fed. Several tent cities are being set up in Ayodhya to accommodate thousands of devotees, who are expected to arrive in the temple town for the ceremony.

According to the Sri Ram Janambhoomi Trust, arrangements will be made for 10,000-15,000 people.

Local authorities are gearing up for an anticipated surge in visitors around the ceremony and are in the process of implementing enhanced security measures and making logistical arrangements to ensure a smooth experience for all.

A resident said the labourers had been sent by the builder to cordon off access to the tower after Sunday's collapse, but some residents sent them away saying any such barricading must be monitored by the administration.

After the row, the builder proceeded with a temporary barricading of the entire Phase I, including Tower D, with ropes.

Manoj Singh, a resident of the society, favoured the barricading saying it will only protect people from going near the unsafe tower.

J N Yadav, Chintels India Vice President, said the barricading had been ordered by the district administration, but one or two people objected.

He said one of the people who objected was a retired woman officer, who chased away the labourers, despite other residents wanting the barricading of the unsafe part.

Six floors of Tower D of Chintels Paradiso society had collapsed partially on February 10, 2022, leading to the death of two women residents. Since then, the building site has been a matter of dispute between the builder and residents.

In November, four balconies of the same unsafe tower collapsed. Three more collapsed on Sunday night.

Month-Old Child, Woman Killed After Fire At Lucknow Hospital

Two patients, including a child and a woman, died after a fire broke out in an operation theatre of the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) here on Monday, police said.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, who also heads the health portfolio, said a detailed probe would be conducted into the incident and strict action would be taken against the offenders.

The blaze was reported in one of the operation theatres at the state-run hospital around 12.40 pm. A spark in a monitor led to the fire, which first spread to the workstation and then to the entire operation theatre, a statement issued by SGPGIMS said.

All the patients in the operation wing were rushed to the post-operative ICU. The firefighting system was immediately activated and the fire was brought under control, the hospital added.

A female patient who was undergoing endo-surgery in the operation theatre could not be saved, the statement said.

Besides, a child, about one-month-old, who was undergoing heart surgery at the time of the incident was brought out to the ICU because of smoke and resuscitated but he could not be saved, it added.

A senior official of SGPGIMS said the woman died as she inhaled smoke and suffered burn injuries.

The child was taken out but died due to his weak heart condition, the official added.

Deputy Inspector General (Fire) Jugal Kishore Tiwari said the information about the fire was received at 12.58 pm and fire tenders arrived at the hospital within five minutes and doused the blaze, however most of the section of the floor was already burnt.

Visitors at the hospital said the operation procedure for three patients was underway when the fire broke out, Jugal Kishore Tiwari said.

It appears that the incident occurred due to a short circuit, he added.

Expressing grief over the incident, Brajesh Pathak said, "The incident that happened at PGI is very unfortunate. A high-level investigation has been ordered. What caused the fire and how it broke out, a complete point-wise investigation will be conducted," Brajesh Pathak said.

"Principal Secretary Parthasarathy Sen Sharma has been asked to immediately go to the spot and strict action will be taken against whoever is found guilty in the incident," he added.

What Minister Said On Remains Of Hindu Temples Found From Historical Times

Evidence or remains of Hindu temples and caves have been found from early historical times in the country, the government said on Monday.

Union Culture Minister G Kishan Reddy said this in a written response to a query in the Lok Sabha.

He was asked if temples of Hindu civilisation existed or temples of Hindu gods and goddesses were built in all the caves or domes that exist in the country and were "later destroyed by the Mughal rulers and the Britishers" and, if so, whether the government proposes to take positive steps to preserve "the Hindu religious cultural heritage under the ASI" that are in a "dilapidated condition and restore it to its pristine form".

Mr Reddy said in his response, "Evidence/remains of Hindu temples and caves have been found from early historical times. The government of India maintains ancient monuments and archaeological sites and remains of national importance, including temples, caves, and domes."

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) undertakes conservation, preservation, and maintenance of ancient monuments and archaeological sites and remains of national importance according to need, priority, and resources while following norms and the policy of conservation. It is a continuous phenomenon, he said.

The ASI receives representations from various quarters regarding the maintenance and upkeep of certain monuments from time to time. These representations are examined and the works were taken up according to the need, priority and availability of resources, the minister added.

Not Old, Still Have Power To "Straighten Some People Out": Sharad Pawar

Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar on Sunday said he had not grown old and still had the power to "straighten some people out".

Speaking at a bullock-cart race in Charkoli in Pune's Haveli tehsil, he said, "I have a complaint against you. All of you in your speeches keep stressing I am 83 years old, I am 84 years old. What have you seen? I have not become old. I have the power to straighten some people out. Don't you worry."

The Sharad Pawar-led NCP split on July 2 this year after Ajit Pawar and eight MLAs joined the Eknath Shinde government. Soon after Ajit Pawar had said his uncle was old and must make way for the next generation to take over the reins of the party.

The race was organized to mark the former Union agriculture minister's birthday, which was on December 12.

Sharad Pawar said the sport gives farmers satisfaction and confidence.

He said those in power have no affection for farmers and gave examples of decisions like export on ban on some produce, including onions.

Instead of helping farmers, the government creates hurdles, he alleged.

While police refused to identify the attackers it is suspected that they may be linked to the terrorist group NSCN-KYA. The police have launched a search for the attacker.

In 2009, Matey was elected as a Congress MLA from the 56th Khonsa West Assembly Constituency. During his tenure, he held the position of Parliamentary Secretary, overseeing the Departments of Women and Social Welfare, Social Justice and Tribal Affairs.

Mukhtar Ansari Gets Over 5-Year Jail Term For Death Threat To Coal Trader

A special court here on Friday sentenced gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari to five-and-a-half year's imprisonment for death threat to a coal trader in 1997.

Along with the imprisonment, the MP-MLA court of Ujjawal Upadhyay also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on Ansari after convicting him for threatening to kill Mahaveer Prasad Ranguta, the victim's counsel Vidhan Chandra Yadav said.

Mukhtar Ansari had threatened to blast Ranguta, a Varanasi resident, and his house in January, 1997, Mr Yadav said.

The court completed the hearing in the case on December 5 but reserved its judgment. The bench convicted Ansari and announced the quantum of punishment on Friday, he added.

Mukhtar Ansari attended the court proceedings via video conferencing from Banda jail, Mr Yadav said.

Mukhtar Ansari, who is an accused in several cases, is lodged in Banda jail since 2021 after being brought from a Punjab Jail.

According to information provided by UP police headquarters, Mukhtar has 65 cases, including that of murder, extortion, and criminal conspiracy lodged against him at several police stations across the state. He has been convicted in seven of these cases.

Mukhtar Ansari was a five-time MLA from the Mau assembly constituency. The gangster-turned-politician did not contest the 2022 assembly elections and his seat was won by his son Abbas Ansari from the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP).

Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh government assured the Supreme Court on Friday it will strengthen the security of Mukhtar Ansari inside the Banda jail, if needed, so no harm is done to him.

A bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and Sanjay Karol was hearing a plea by Mukhtar Ansari's son Umar Ansari seeking a direction to transfer his father to any prison outside Uttar Pradesh.

Kerala Court Acquits Man Accused Of Raping, Killing 6-Year-Old 2 Years Ago

A court in Kerala on Thursday acquitted a man accused of raping and killing a six-year-old girl, who was his neighbour, at Churukkulam estate in this high range district two years ago.

The Fast Track Special Court acquitted the accused -- Arjun -- due to lack of conclusive evidence against him, a lawyer associated with the case said.

After the accused was acquitted, the angry family members were seen on TV channels hurling abuses at him and also expressing their dissatisfaction with the verdict.

The visuals also showed the police quickly removing him from the court complex apprehending an attack from the victim's family The defence lawyer alleged that the accused was framed in the case by the police by fabricating evidence against him.

After the verdict, the defence lawyer told media that "we have demanded a re-investigation of the case to find out the actual culprit".

The state police in a statement said it would be filing an appeal against the court's verdict.

Meanwhile, the Congress-led UDF opposition said the police and the prosecution failed to ensure the conviction of the accused.

Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the state assembly V D Satheesan said the verdict has shocked the conscience of the state.

Mr Satheesan contended that the failure of the police and the prosecution in the case was clear as day and therefore, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan should respond to this.

The court verdict in the case indicates that the government was not serious about child safety issues, he said and added that merely going in appeal was not a solution.

Mr Satheesan further said that the rape and murder of the child was confirmed in the post-mortem and the accused had confessed to the crime.

He also said that it was "mysterious" that the police ignored the request of the girl's family to book the accused under relevant provisions of the SC/ST Act.

Therefore, there needs to be an investigation as to whether there was any external interference which led to police and prosecution failing to establish the guilt of the accused, the LoP contended.

Mr Satheesan also alleged that the public suspects that the accused's DYFI connection may be the reason for destruction of evidence in the case.

The girl was found hanging inside her house on June 30, 2021, when her parents went out for work in a nearby plantation.

Police had initially registered a case of unnatural death but the autopsy report confirmed that the child was raped before she was hanged.

It seems like he had raped her many times in the past. However, on June 30, the child fell unconscious during his rape attempt and thinking that she was dead, he hanged her, police said.

Japanese Man Who Transformed Into A Dog Meets A Real One, What Happens Next

A Japanese man named Toco, went viral on social media as he transformed himself into a canine after shelling out more than $14,000 (Rs 12 lakh) for a custom-made collie costume. Now, a video of Toco meeting a real dog has gained popularity on the internet. In the clip, the real dog is seen barking after looking at Toco. A few seconds later, Toco is seen bending and coming towards the dog, seeming to extend a hand of friendship. However, the dog is not amused and continues to bark. The dog then takes a few steps back, barks while looking at Toco and removes itself from the scene.

"Dog's reaction to seeing a realistic dog costume," reads the caption of the video.

Recently, Toco posted a series of images on Instagram that show him unsuccessfully taking on the Crufts-style agility course. His latest adventure shows the man dressed in Collie costume trying to leap over a set of hurdles in a garden. The photos show him failing at jumps and bumping into a hurdle pole. He wrote in the caption of the post, "When you become a dog, you want to try agility, don't you?" The reactions from Instagram users were mixed. While some of them appreciated Toto for trying his best, others slammed him.

Meanwhile, in August this year, the Japanese man stated that people are "misinformed" that he wants to live like a dog, as per a report in the New York Post. Discussing the costume, Toco stated that he wears the costume "maybe once a week, mostly at home". He said, "My desire to be an animal is like a desire to transform...a desire to be something that I am not." It is to be noted that the creators took 40 days to make the unusual garment but it has helped the man realise his dream of "becoming an animal."

The man has chronicled his entire journey on his YouTube channel. Although he has not revealed his identity yet in public, however, he admitted he always "had a vague dream of becoming an animal" ever since he was a child.

On his decision to become a collie, Toco had previously said, "I made it a collie because it looks real when I put it on my taste and costume. My favourite is quadrupedal animals, especially cute ones. Among them, I thought that a big animal close to me would be good, considering that it would be a realistic model, so I decided to make it a dog. Long-haired dogs can mislead the human figure. I met such a condition and made Collie, my favourite breed of dog."

Palestinian Economy Severely Impacted By Israel-Hamas War: World Bank

The Israel-Hamas war in Gaza is having a severe impact on the Palestinian economy, according to the World Bank, which now estimates sharp economic contraction this year and next.

The conflict, sparked by Hamas' cross-border attacks on October 7 that killed 1,200 people, according to Israeli figures, and saw around 240 hostages taken back to Gaza, is now dragging on into its third month.

The human toll of Israel's fierce response has been extreme: More than 18,400 people in Gaza have been killed, the majority of them women and children, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

The UN estimates 1.9 million of Gaza's 2.4 million people have been displaced by the war, half of them children, as Israel's overwhelming aerial bombardment in the days after October 7 was subsequently accompanied by a ground invasion aimed at destroying Hamas.

Beyond the immediate human cost, the Israel-Hamas conflict has also "severely impacted the Palestinian economy," the World Bank announced in a statement published Tuesday.

Gaza's contribution to the overall Palestinian economy, which includes the West Bank, had already shrunk from around 36 percent in 2005 to just 17 percent last year, according to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics.

Israel's fierce response to the Hamas attacks on October 7, along with the shuttering of its borders to Palestinian workers from both Gaza and the West Bank, is likely to severely impact the Palestinian economy, according to the Bank.

Despite Gaza's small economic contribution, the World Bank now expects the overall Palestinian economy to contract by 3.7 percent this year, down sharply from its pre-war forecast of a 3.2 percent increase.

Next year, the situation is expected to be even worse.

Whereas the World Bank previously anticipated growth of 3.0 percent in 2024, it now expects an overall contraction of 6.0 percent -- on the assumption that the severity of the conflict decreases next year.

If the war drags on, the economic impact could deteriorate further.

In response to the conflict, the World Bank has announced some financial support aimed at meeting the immediate needs of the population in Gaza.

On Tuesday, the development lender announced an additional $20 million in funds for medical care, humanitarian needs, and financing for food vouchers and parcels in the besieged Palestinian territory, on top of the $15 million already delivered.

The package, some of which still requires board approval, would provide "emergency relief for the affected people of Gaza," the World Bank said.

"Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir Is Ours": Amit Shah Reiterates in Parliament

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday reaffirmed inside Parliament that Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) is part of India and that no one can snatch the region from us.

The Union Home Minister was replying to debate in the Rajya Sabha on the two bills-- The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2023 and The Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill 2023-- which were passed by the Lok Sabha on December 7.

He said that the Delimitation Commission, set up by the Centre for the delimitation of assemblies and parliamentary constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir, has reserved 24 seats for PoK as it is ours.

"The delimitation commission has taken many other decisions. I just want to tell the past and present situation before the House. Earlier there were only 37 seats in Jammu (division), now the new Delimitation Commission has increased the number of seats from 37 to 43 in the Jammu region. Work has been done to make 47 seats instead of 46 in Kashmir (division). In this way, Jammu and Kashmir together have 90 seats against 83 seats earlier. And 24 seats of PoK have been kept reserved because we still believe that...(and) today I want to say again that PoK belongs to India, it is ours and that no one can take it from us," Mr Shah said.

The Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023, was introduced in Lok Sabha on July 26, 2023. It amends the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation Act of 2004.

The Act provides for reservation in jobs and admission in professional institutions to members of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and other socially and educationally backward classes.

The other seeks to insert new sections 15A and 15B in the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 to nominate not more than two members, one of whom shall be a woman, from the community of "Kashmiri Migrants" and one member from "Displaced Persons from Pakistan occupied Jammu and Kashmir", to the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly.

The two bills on the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation are aimed at providing "rights to those who faced injustice" and were deprived of their rights in the Union Territory.

Mr Shah said that everyone has supported all the elements of the two bills unanimously.

Stating that the term 'weak and deprived class' is a very hurtful name for any citizen, he said, "It has been decided to add the name 'Other Backward Class' in place of these terms, which are constitutional terms."

The second bill is to give respect to everyone including Kashmiri Pandits displaced in Jammu and Kashmir over the years, Shah said.

"Terrorism (in J-K) started in the 80s, and reached its peak in 1989, many Kashmiri Hindus, especially Kashmiri Pandits and many Sikh brothers left the valley and scattered across the country. They went to Jammu, went to Bengaluru, went to Gujarat, went to Delhi, went to Faridabad...they scattered so much that in their own country they became displaced and refugees. (This bill) is to honour those people," he said.

During his address, the Union Home Minister said a total of 46,631 families and 1,97,967 people, who were displaced registered themselves with the government after the Centre's efforts.

He said that the ones displaced including Kashmiri Pandits who are left from registering themselves can approach the government.

"Today, through this House, I want to tell the Kashmiri Pandits and other displaced persons scattered across the country that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government is committed to providing you justice. You write to me, write to the Kashmir government. Your registration will be done without any hassle. You will become a voter, you will be able to contest elections and you can also become a minister in Jammu and Kashmir. You have full rights," he said.

Russia Calls For Global Mission To Assess Gaza's Humanitarian Situation

Russia on Sunday called for an international monitoring mission to go to Gaza to assess the humanitarian situation, and said it was unacceptable for Israel to use Hamas' Oct. 7 attack as justification for punishing the Palestinian people.

Israel invaded Gaza in retaliation for Hamas attack that Israel says killed 1,200 people. Israel's assault on Gaza has killed at least 17,000 people, Gaza health authorities say.

The United States on Friday vetoed a proposed U.N. Security Council demand for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the war between Israel and Palestinian group Hamas.

"We strongly condemned the terrorist attack against Israel on Oct. 7," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Al Jazeera in an interview aired on Sunday at the Doha Forum conference.

"At the same time, we do not believe it is acceptable to use this event for the collective punishment of the millions of Palestinian people with indiscriminate shelling."

Mr Lavrov said that for there to be "humanitarian pauses" in Gaza "some kind of monitoring on the ground" was needed.

"We addressed the [UN] Secretary General [Antonio Guterres] suggesting that he use his authority to consider some kind of monitoring - but so far to no avail," Mr Lavrov said.

President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly accused the United States and the West of ignoring the need for an independent Palestinian state within 1967 borders. Putin on Sunday spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about Gaza.

"This happened not in a vacuum," Mr Lavrov said, pointing to decades of blockade and unfulfilled promises about a Palestinian state.

The UN's Guterres has previously said that the Hamas attack did not happen in a vacuum. Israel said Guterres had justified the Hamas attacks with such words. Guterres rejected the Israeli accusations.

UKRAINE

Asked in the Al Jazeera interview if Russia was being hypocritical with its criticism about that fate of the Palestinians while Russia fights a war in Ukraine, Mr Lavrov said neither he nor Russia were hypocritical.

Mr Lavrov said that the West was trying to exhaust Russia in Ukraine by supplying weapons and that if peace talks were to take place then Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy would have to annul his own presidential decree.

"It is up to the Ukrainians to recognise how deep they are in the hole where the Americans put them," Mr Lavrov said when asked if the war was at a stalemate.

When asked by Al Jazeera what the chances were of diplomacy to bring about a ceasefire or peace in Ukraine, he said: "You'll have to call Mr Zelenskiy because a year and half ago he signed a decree prohibiting any negotiations with Putin."

Mr Lavrov said that a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia was almost reached in Istanbul in March and April 2022 based on the idea of Ukrainian neutrality.

"This deal was aborted - it was cancelled because the Americans and the Brits decided that if Putin is ready to sign it then lets exhaust him more. That's what they are doing now. Stalemate or no stalemate - that is the fact," Mr Lavrov said.

Asked in the interview about the August plane crash which killed Wagner mercenary chief Yevgeny Prigozhin, Mr Lavrov said investigators had probed the crash.

"As regards the soldiers from Wagner group... quite a number of them went to Belarus and started to serve there," Mr Lavrov said "Others joined the regular structures of the Russian army - and they continue to serve."

"BJP Aims For 400 Seats, Congress For Rs 400 Crore Corruption": Anurag Thakur

Referring to the seizure of huge amounts of cash in Income Tax raids at premises linked to a Congress MP, Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Sunday said that the BJP aims for 400 seats, while Congress indulges in Rs 400 crore corruption.

"The support BJP has got from people is because of PM Modi's public welfare policies. The country has progressed in all spheres. Congress leaders are involved in corruption of more than Rs 400 crore, while we are thinking of winning 400 seats," said Mr Thakur.

Pointing towards Congress' Rs 200 cr corruption scam, BJP leader Anurag Thakur said that this is the reason by the party always opposed the demonetisation and spoke against the ED and CBI.

"Since the beginning, the Congress party has always been involved in corruption and scams", Mr Thakur said.

Questioning the Congress party's silence on the recent Income tax raid and exposure of Congress party's mega-money scandal, Mr Thakur said "It has been four days now, yet Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi haven't said a word on it".

Notably, more than Rs 200 crore of unaccounted cash was recovered from an Odisha-based liquor distillery group which was linked to Congress MP Dhiraj Sahu.

To oppose Congress party's mega-money scandal, all 14 units of the Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party have declared to hold a dharna in the national capital to seek the statement of Congress leadership on the Rs 200 crore cash scam.

Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva said that there is widespread resentment amongst the people after witnessing the cash scam of Congress MP Dheeraj Sahu.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah took a jibe at the INDIA alliance for remaining silent on the issue. He said that there is a fear in the minds of the parties who are part of the bloc as their "secrets will be revealed".

"I understand Congress is silent as corruption is in their nature but JDU, RJD, DMK, and SP all are sitting silently...Now I understand why a campaign was run against PM Modi that agencies are being misused. It was run because there was a fear in their mind that all the secrets of their corruption would be revealed," Home Minister Amit Shah told ANI.

Income Tax sleuths have, so far, recovered more than Rs 200 crore cash from several locations in Odisha and Jharkhand during their raids against Boudh Distilleries Private Limited (BDPL) and more entities linked to Congress MP Dhiraj Sahu.

The family of Hadiya, whose conversion to Islam and subsequent marriage to a man named Shafin Jahan resulted in a controversy, has moved the Kerala High Court saying that they were unable to trace her for the past one month.

Her father, Asokan K M, has moved the High Court saying he apprehends that his daughter has been taken into illegal custody by certain people including her husband, who are allegedly part of the banned Popular Front of India.

The plea may come up for hearing on Tuesday, a lawyer in connection with the matter said.

Asokan told the high court that for the past one month, Hadiya was untraceable to him and his wife.

He claimed that whenever they called their daughter, either she was not receiving any calls or on many occasions, the mobile phone was switched off.

Asokan also claimed that they went to her recently opened homoeo clinic at Malappuram but it was found closed and the neighbours didn't have any idea about the same.

"Any kind of harm can be caused to the detenu by the persons behind the 4th and the 6th respondents who are the active members of the PFI, the banned organisation. Now the detenu is under the control of this gang and unless she is produced before the Hon'ble court and sent along with the petitioner, her life would be in danger," the petition said.

The fourth respondent in the petition is A S Sainaba, the former office-bearer of National Women's Front, the women's wing of banned PFI and the sixth respondent is Hadiya's husband, Jahan.

Asokan also claimed before the court that Hadiya has told the family that she got separated from her husband.

Meanwhile, a few days ago, Hadiya spoke to a regional television channel in which she claimed that she got separated from her husband Jahan.

She also said that she got married again to another person and it was her personal matter.

"The Sangh Parivar is using my father as a tool. He is playing according to their tunes," she was seen saying in the interview to the TV channel.

She claimed that she was in regular touch with her parents and despite that her parents were causing trouble.

Hadiya, had converted to Islam during her medical studies in Coimbatore and married Jahan in 2016 when she was 25 years old.

Soon, Asokan had filed a writ petition in the High Court saying the conversion was forced and Jahan had links to extremist organisations like PFI. He had also argued that she would be trafficked to Syria to join the Islamic State.

The High Court had then annulled the marriage, calling it a 'sham'.

However, Jahan later approached the Supreme Court and in 2018, the top court had set aside the High Court order.

Israel Says It Hit 450 Targets In Gaza In 24 Hours As War Rages, US Alarmed

Israel sharply stepped up strikes on the Gaza Strip, pounding the length of the Palestinian enclave and killing hundreds in a new, expanded phase of the war that Washington said veered from Israeli promises to do more to protect civilians.

The Israeli military said on Friday it had struck more than 450 targets in Gaza from land, sea, and air over the past 24 hours - the most since a truce collapsed last week and about double the daily figures typically reported since then.

With most Gazans now displaced and unable to access any aid, hospitals overrun and food running out, the main U.N. agency there said society was "on the verge of a full-blown collapse" and its ability to protect people there was "reducing fast".

Residents and the Israeli military both reported intensified fighting in both northern areas, where Israel had previously said its troops had largely completed their tasks last month, and in the south where they mounted a new assault this week.

Gaza's health ministry reported 350 people killed on Thursday, bringing the death death from Israel's two-month campaign in Gaza to 17,487, with thousands more missing and presumed buried under rubble. More strikes were reported on Friday morning in Khan Younis in the south, the Nusseirat camp in the center and Gaza City in the north.

Israel's military said 94 Israeli soldiers had been killed fighting in Gaza since its ground invasion of the enclave began.

An Israeli commander, Brig. Gen. Dan Goldfuss, said in a video message recorded in Khan Younis that his forces were fighting house to house and "shaft to shaft", a reference to tunnel shafts. As he spoke, gunshots rang out in the background.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in Washington on Thursday that it was imperative that Israel took steps to protect Gaza's civilian population.

"And there does remain a gap between...the intent to protect civilians and the actual results that we're seeing on the ground," he told a press conference.

'Fear, Hunger and Cold'

Israel started its campaign to destroy the Hamas group that rules Gaza after Hamas fighters attacked Israeli towns on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 people and seizing more than 240 hostages, according to Israeli tallies.

Since then, the vast majority of Gaza's 2.3 million people have been driven from their homes - many forced to flee three or four times - with only the belongings they can carry.

With the fighting now extended across both halves of the Gaza Strip at the same time, residents say it has become almost impossible to find refuge.

Israel says it is providing detail about which areas are safe and how to reach them, and blames Hamas for harm that befalls civilians by operating among them, which Hamas denies.

Hamas reported the most intense clashes with Israeli forces were taking place in the north in Gaza City's Shejaia district, as well as in the south in Khan Younis, where Israelis reached the heart of the enclave's second-biggest city on Wednesday.

The Israeli military's Arabic-language spokesman posted to social media that troops were operating "forcefully against Hamas and terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip, especially in the Khan Younis area and the northern Strip".

He said all residents must leave the Jabaliya and Zeitoun areas in the north, as well as Shejaia and the old city in Gaza City. In the south, residents seeking shelter should head along the coast, with the main north-south route through the spine of the enclave now "a battlefield", he said.

Reuters journalists in the southern Gaza Strip have seen dead and wounded overrunning the main Nasser hospital in Khan Younis, where there was no room on the floor on Friday for arriving patients sprawled across blood smeared tiles.

"We are staying in an area that is, according to maps, a safe area," said Mohamed al-Amouri, adjusting an oxygen mask for his school-aged son who lay on a hospital bed in soccer shorts with his legs bandaged and his body lacerated.

"Children were on the streets playing, living life normally... we went out after the hit, hearing screams, to find youth, children, women and men in body parts - among them martyrs and injured."

In Rafah, further south hard against the border with Egypt, Thaer Kadeeh is living with his family in a makeshift tent from sheets of thin plastic.

"We don't sleep. Fear, hunger and cold, the three combined and no one is looking out for us," he told Reuters. "You try to make the feeling of hunger go away for like an hour, but then the child asks again for food."

Residents reached by telephone elsewhere in Gaza described similar scenes of desperation. With the fighting now in all directions, there was no place left to flee, said Yamen, sheltering at a school in central Gaza with his family.

"Inside the school is like outside it: the same feeling of fear of near death, the same suffering of starvation," he said. "Every day we say we somehow survived. But for how long?"

Thomas White, Gaza head of UNRWA, the U.N. aid agency for Palestinians, wrote on X: "Civil order is breaking down in Gaza - the streets feel wild, particularly after dark - some aid convoys are being looted and UN vehicles stoned. Society is on the brink of full-blown collapse."

Ramy Abdu, head of the Geneva-based Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor, posted pictures showing severe damage to the vast medieval Great Omari Mosque, the most important landmark in Gaza's Old City, apparently hit for the first time. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military.

A Hamas official accused Israeli forces of a "heinous crime against innocent civilians" after images of Palestinian men stripped to their underwear in Gaza circulated on social media. The International Committee of the Red Cross said it was concerned by the images and all detainees must be treated with humanity and dignity.

The Israeli government responded that the images showed military-age men in areas that were Hamas strongholds.

Tamil Nadu Cyclone: Centre Releases Rs 450 Crore For Disaster Response

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed the Union Home Ministry to release Rs 450 crore, the second instalment to Tamil Nadu for cyclone relief, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said here on Thursday.

Following an aerial survey and a hi-level meeting with Chief Minister M K Stalin at the Secretariat, Singh said the first instalment of Rs 450 crore had been released earlier to the state.

The release of two instalments to Tamil Nadu is the Centre's share in the State Disaster Response Fund.

"PM Modi is distressed by the loss of lives in TN due to rains, flood," he said.

After the meeting with Singh, Stalin said a team from the Centre would soon visit the state to assess damage due to the cyclone.

He termed as 'unseen before,' the rains here and nearby areas and outlined the state's relief initiatives on war-footing. In view of the government's preventive measures, loss of lives and damage has been avoided to a large extent.

The CM said relief work would continue to go on in full swing to bring normalcy in all the affected areas. Chennai city has started returning to normalcy.

The Union Minister said the problem of urban floods has become repetitive in Chennai in recent years and the Government of India has approved a Central funding of Rs 500 crore for urban flood management activities.

The Centre has approved the first urban flood mitigation project of Rs 561.29 crore for "Integrated Urban Flood Management activities for Chennai Basin Project," under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund, which includes the Central assistance of Rs 500 crore.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in a post on 'X' said the mitigation project will help make Chennai flood-resilient.

"This is the first in a series of urban flood mitigation efforts and will help develop a broader framework for urban flood management." Singh told reporters that all the Central agencies including NDRF, are doing their best as regards mitigation work in Tamil Nadu.

"I have been directed by PM Modi to monitor the situation; PM has spoken to CM Stalin." The prime minister has assured the chief minister of all possible help from the Central government, he added.

Earlier, Singh undertook an aerial survey of flood hit northern Tamil Nadu and held discussions with Stalin over the extent of damage due to the cyclone Michaung.

After he surveyed Chennai and nearby areas hit by torrential rains and flood, the Union Minister called on Stalin at the Secretariat here and he was briefed on the cyclone, the damage caused and the relief needed from the Centre.

The CM submitted a memorandum (Impact of Cyclone Michaung, Interim Report) to Singh seeking interim relief, the government said.

"The Union Minister (Rajnath Singh) has assured expeditious release of funds by the Centre," Stalin said.

Union Minister of State, L Murugan and Central government officials were present during Singh's meeting with Stalin at the Secretariat.

Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thenarasu and Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena accompanied the Defence Minister during the aerial survey.

Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengelpet and Tiruvallur in northern Tamil Nadu were hit by the cyclone and heavy inundation.

The state government has already sought an interim Central relief of Rs 5,060 crore.

Under the influence of the severe cyclonic storm 'Michaung,' Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengelpet districts received a total of 109.41 cm rainfall (December 3 and 4). Poonamalle (in Tiruvallur district, a Chennai suburb) received 32 cm and Perungudi (Chennai) received 29 cm. PTI VGN SA VGN KH

Google Unveils AI Model 'Gemini' Billed As Better-Than-ChatGPT

Google on Wednesday infused its Bard chatbot with a new-generation artificial intelligence model called Gemini, which it touts as being able to reason better than ChatGPT and other rivals.

The search engine juggernaut is aiming to take the generative AI lead from ChatGPT-maker OpenAI as that company deals with the aftermath of a boardroom coup that saw chief executive Sam Altman fired and then rehired within a matter of days.

Google has for years discreetly developed AI powers but was caught off guard when OpenAI late last year released ChatGPT and teamed up with Microsoft to make its capabilities available to users worldwide.

"This is incredible momentum, and yet, we're only beginning to scratch the surface of what's possible," Google chief executive Sundar Pichai said in a release.

"This new era of models represents one of the biggest science and engineering efforts we've undertaken as a company."

It is the first AI model to outperform human experts in certain benchmarks involving problem solving, math, physics, history, law, medicine and ethics, Google DeepMind vice president of product Eli Collins said during a briefing.

A demonstration showed Gemini recognizing what it was shown, from a person acting out a "Matrix" movie scene to someone drawing a duck and then holding up a rubber duck.

Gemini commented on what it was shown, making comparisons, drawing conclusions, and offering suggestions.

Performance of an "Ultra" version of Gemini "far exceeds" that of other state-of-the-art models in 30 benchmark tests measuring capabilities such as image understanding or mathematical reasoning, according to Collins.

A "Pro" version of Gemini built into Bard is designed to handle a wide range of tasks. A "Nano" version is tailored for smartphones, coming first to Google's top-of-the-line Pixel 8 handset.

Google raced out its own Bard chatbot earlier this year, continually updating the chatbot based on people's feedback, according to Bard vice president Sissie Hsiao.

"All of that rapid innovation is bringing us to what we see as a truly transformative moment," Hsiao said during the briefing.

"With Gemini, Bard is getting its biggest upgrade yet."

AI collaborator

Bard will use Gemini for more advanced reasoning, planning, and understanding capabilities, a demonstration showed.

It will be available in English in more than 170 countries and territories, with more languages added soon, according to Hsiao.

Gemini-infused Bard will be expanded to be "multi-modal," meaning it will be able to work with auditory and visual input as well as text prompts, executives said.

"With Gemini we are one step closer to our vision of bringing you the best AI collaborator in the world," Hsiao said.

Gemini ramps up the quality of Bard's performance, whether in writing poetry or computer code to shopping queries or research projects, according to Hsiao.

The "Ultra" version of Gemini designed to handle highly complex tasks will be released early next year, Google said.

"I'm in awe of what it's capable of," Collins said of Gemini.

"This is the start of a new era for us at Google as we continue to rapidly innovate and advance the model's capabilities."

Google in September integrated Gmail, YouTube and other tools into its Bard chatbot as tech giants seek to persuade users that generative AI is useful and not dangerous or just a fad.

Those capabilities closely match offerings from Microsoft that infuse its Office 365 apps with AI powers, though those come at an extra cost to customers and are not available through the chatbot on its search engine Bing.

The staying power of generative AI chatbots, once the initial excitement has faded, is yet to be confirmed.

Moreover, integration of the OpenAI-based chatbot into Microsoft's search engine earlier this year failed to make an impact on Google's overwhelming dominance of search.

Governments and tech companies however insist that generative AI is technology's next big chapter and have ramped up spending on new products, research, and infrastructure.

High Court Refuses To Renew Passport Of Man Accused In Murder Case

The Karnataka High Court has upheld the Passport Authority's rejection of a man's application for the renewal of his passport for 10 years as he is facing a trial in a murder case.

The High Court has, however, said that he can approach the related court seeking the issuance of a short-validity passport as per law.

Santhosh Beejadi Srinivasa, 43, from Tumakuru, holds a Schengen area visa (for 27 European countries) but was unable to travel since his passport had just six months' validity left.

His passport will expire on April 10, 2024 and he has sought the renewal of the passport for the next 10 years.

However, his application was declined on account of the pending criminal case.

He then approached the High Court and Justice M Nagaprasanna gave the judgement on December 4 on his petition.

Referring to the criminal case, the court said, "The applicant is under a cloud. If an applicant of the kind in the case at hand, wants to walk over the clouds, the cloud over such applicant must walk away."

The question before the court was, "Whether the pendency of a criminal case would bar the issuance or renewal/re-issuance of a passport to a citizen of this nation?" To answer this question, the court referred to the Passports Act, 1967 and several provisions under it.

The High Court also specifically referred to the Government of India's Ministry of External Affairs notification of August 25, 1993, "GSR 570(E)" which deals with this kind of situation.

"It permits the issuance of a short validity passport, pursuant to the orders that would be passed by the concerned court according to the specified period and if no period is specified, the passport would be issued for a period of one year."

"Therefore, it is for the applicant against whom a criminal case is pending, in any court of law in the country, to approach the concerned court before which the proceeding is pending, and seek permission to travel; "If such permission is granted, it will have to be in tune with the conditions in GSR 570," the court said.

Santhosh Beejadi's mother died under unnatural circumstances and subsequently, he, his wife and his father were arrayed as accused in the case and charged with murder.

The court said that it was a case where he could even be given capital punishment and therefore cannot be given a passport for 10 years.

"Therefore, it is a case where the petitioner is one of the accused in an offence which can even result in capital punishment. The trial is in progress. The petitioner is not absolved of the crime, by any competent court of law even to this date," the HC said.

Santosh Beejadi's counsel had argued that he had been allowed to travel with the permission of the jurisdictional court earlier even while the trial was pending.

The High Couty, however, said, "It is an altogether different circumstance." The court said that the denial of re-issuance of the passport was in consonance with Section 6 of the Passport Act.

Sub-clause (f) of the Section says that "where proceedings in respect of an offence alleged to have been committed by the applicant are pending before a criminal court in India, the passport authority is empowered to deny the issue of travel document," the court said.

Rejecting the contention that other benches of the High Court had earlier ruled that the pendency of criminal cases should not come in the way of re-issuance or renewal of a passport, the court said that it "would be applicable only to the issuance of a fresh passport and not for renewal or re-issuance".

Court Relief For Akhilesh Yadav Over Alleged Model Code Violation Case

The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday stayed criminal proceedings initiated by a local court against Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav for alleged violation of the model code of conduct and Covid norms during the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls in 2022.

The proceedings were initiated by a Gautam Budh Nagar district court on a case registered against him, RLD chief Jayant Chaudhary and others at the Dadri police station.

Hearing an application filed by Mr Yadav, Justice Raj Beer Singh also directed the state government's counsel to file a reply and fixed January 21 as the next of hearing in the case.

In the present petition, only Mr Yadav has challenged the charge-sheet in the case and the criminal proceedings.

Police had registered the case under Indian Penal Code sections 188 (any deliberate disobedience of an order duly promulgated by a public servant), 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection), 270 (act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) and provisions of the Epidemic Diseases Act.

The charge-sheet in the case was subsequently filed against them on October 12, 2022. Appearing on behalf of the applicant, his counsel Imran Ullah contended that in such type of cases relating to violation of guidelines, a complaint can only be filed by the person whose order has been violated. In this case, this was not done and directly an FIR was lodged by police, he claimed.

The act which Mr Yadav had allegedly done has not been appended anywhere in the case diary, Mr Ullah said.

Further, Mr Yadav was not suffering from Covid, "then how was he likely to spread the infection, as has been alleged in the FIR", he said. Lastly, he contended that all the witnesses in this case were police personnel whose statement are same, and hence, cannot be relied upon. After hearing the counsels of both parties, the court stayed the local court's proceedings against Mr Yadav.

Byju's In Process To Raise Rs 700 Crore To Fund Operations: Report

Edtech major Byju's is in process to raise Rs 600-700 crore to fund the company's operations till March by when it expects to realise money through the sale of Epic and partial stake sale in other subsidiaries, according to sources aware of the development.

Byju's founder Byju Raveendran has recently raised money by mortgaging home and real estate assets owned by family members for paying salaries, sources said.

"There is about Rs 50 crore gap per month in operational expenses where a large component is salary. Promoters have pledged shares, home, and some other real estate assets of family members to bridge the gap," a source said.

"Promoters are also in the process of raising debt of Rs 600-700 crore to help operations till March. By March, the situation will ease with the sale of Epic and partial stake sale in some other subsidiaries," a source said.

Another source said Byju's has called an Annual General Meeting (AGM) on December 20 where the assets that have been pledged by the promoters will be brought to the notice of the company's board.

"The company is also in the process to submit a repayment schedule to the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) for Rs 160 crore sponsorship dues. Besides the sale of Epic, which is in advanced stages, existing investors are also expected to infuse funds into the company," the source said.

According to the AGM notice sent to shareholders, the company will also seek shareholders' approval for standalone and consolidated financial results for FY22.

An email query sent to Byju's elicited no reply.

Last month, Manipal Education and Medical Group Chairman Ranjan Pai acquired a Rs 1,400 crore debt raised by edtech major Byju's from Davidson Kempner.

The settlement includes a penal amount claimed by Kempner against debt investment of USD 100 million, or about Rs 800 crore.

Ranjan Pai is also in discussions to buy additional stakes in AESL shortly. Ranjan Pai's proprietary fund, Aarin Capital, was the first institutional investor in Byju's in 2013.
