Fraud Cases In Supreme Court Tend To Increase As Polls Near: Chief Justice

The number of "fraud cases" in the Supreme Court tends to increase as elections draw closer and the court becomes a site for political engagement, Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud said on Thursday.

Speaking at the Constitution Day function organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) in the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Chandrachud said we all exist together and the Indian Constitution tells us that "we either survive or we perish together".

"But above all, I think it is important that on a day where we celebrate the Constitution, we learn to discharge our duties to the cause of justice. Our duty to the cause of justice ranks much higher than the success or failure in individual cases," he said.

"Just yesterday, I had to deal with a fraud case. The Supreme Court deals with fraud cases every day. Some courts have more than their share of fraud cases and there are some times as elections come, the number of fraud cases tends to increase in the court and we as judges realise it," the CJI said.

Constitution Day is celebrated across the country on November 26 every year.

Chief Justice Chandrachud said after elections get over, things settle down and "as the polls come closer and closer, the court becomes a site for political engagement. That is a truth of our society. I am not looking at it with any value judgement".

Chief Justice Chandrachud, who also addressed the gathering in Hindi for a few minutes, said freedom and the Constitution have an unbreakable relationship.

Speaking about the legal profession, the CJI said it is a profession of diversity, including diversity in terms of gender. He said be it the judges or lawyers, all have come from different parts of the country in search of a better livelihood.

"But in the process of giving each one of us a better livelihood, we are also engaged in providing a better existence to our fellow citizens. That is the big power which all of you command as lawyers," he said.

Referring to the attire of judges and lawyers, the CJI said it reminds us that the "similarity of our attire is a symbol of the common existence which we share". It was for the members of the Bar to make the legal profession broad-based and inclusive, Chief Justice Chandrachud said while highlighting the need to encourage young lawyers.

"And remember, ultimately, it is if you support the institution of justice, which is to ensure that you support the independence of your own judiciary, that the judiciary can truly be able to discharge its duties," he said.

"If you are not giving to the judiciary its own sense of due, how will you expect them to discharge their own obligations towards society. Because your judges come from you and they return to you. They are not distinct from you," he said.

He said members of the Bar are also here for the betterment of the profession, to serve the cause of justice and to ensure that the other side of the profession, the judges, who are duty bound to act in aid of justice, continue to do so.

"You have to not merely protect your judges, but you have to hold them to account as well," he said.

Sharing a story, Chief Justice Chandrachud said sometime back, one of his colleagues had an attack of dengue and there was a need for blood transfusion.

"But we drew on the credit of the blood which was given by our employees during the last blood donation camp…my colleague came back to normalcy very quickly by the blood transfusion," he said, adding this was again a reminder that all of us are bound together in this cycle of existence.

"None of us in that sense is different from the other. None of us stands alone," Chief Justice Chandrachud said.

"One Rocket Makes All This Go Away": Gazans Demand Complete Ceasefire

Returning home to find their neighbourhood wrecked by bombs, residents of Abu Ta'imah on the outskirts of Gaza's Khan Younis said the Palestinian territory needed a permanent ceasefire, not just an extension of the truce between Israel and Hamas.

Local people fled the area on the eastern edge of the city at the start of the war and did not return until the truce, which was in its sixth day on Wednesday.

"We were shocked to see this destruction. We were shocked to see our homes, our streets, our lands, our yards and everything demolished," said Gihad Nabil, who was recently married and had been living in Abu Ta'imah with his wife.

Standing on a roof with a view of ruined buildings and mounds of rubble as far as the eye could see, he said the area had been home to about 5,000 or 6,000 people before the war. He asked where they would go.

"My house is completely destroyed. My brother's home, my uncle's my neighbour's, all of them destroyed. We don't need this truce, we need a complete ceasefire," he said, likening what he was seeing to an earthquake zone.

As Nabil and another man sat on the roof, talking and smoking a shisha pipe, a group of children down below sat around a small fire built on a pile of rubble and warmed up bread, which they shared.

Three of the children climbed onto the carcass of a car whose pockmarked blue metalwork looked like crumpled paper and posed for a Reuters camera, framed by twisted cables and jagged chunks of concrete.

Hamas, the Islamist group that runs Gaza, triggered the war on Oct. 7 when they rampaged through southern Israel, killing 1,200 people including babies and children and taking 240 hostages of all ages, according to Israel's tally.

Israel vowed to destroy Hamas and launched an assault on Gaza that has killed more than 15,000 people, four in 10 of them children, according to health officials there.

Gone In A Moment

The war has displaced 80% of Gazans from their homes, according to U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who on Wednesday described the situation as an epic humanitarian catastrophe.

Abdelrahman Abu Ta'imah, a member of the clan that gave the area its name, searched through his bombed-out apartment, pulling clothes and a pink mattress from the debris.

"I have been struggling and working for 30 years in this country," he said, adding that even before the war life was hard because of the blockade imposed on Gaza by Israel and Egypt since 2007, when Hamas took control of the enclave.

"Money doesn't come easy, then all of a sudden, all the work and effort of 30 years disappeared in a moment. One rocket makes all this goes away. Why is that?" he asked.

From the start of its attack, Israel told Palestinians living in northern Gaza to move to the southern part of the strip, which includes Khan Younis and its environs.

However, Israeli forces have also pounded the south, though less intensively than the north. Israel says it targets Hamas infrastructure, and accuses Hamas of putting civilians in harm's way by using them as human shields.

Diplomatic efforts were underway on Wednesday to prolong the truce, which has allowed more aid trucks to enter Gaza and some Israeli and foreign hostages to be released, as well as some Palestinian detainees to be freed from Israeli prisons.

But Abu Ta'imah said a short truce was not enough and he longed for a permanent solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"Ever since we were born, we've been enduring wars and destruction. Every time we rebuild, there comes a fiercer war than the one before," he said.

"Jubilant Scenes": How Global Media Reacted To Uttarkashi Tunnel Rescue Ops

As rescuers in India on Tuesday successfully pulled out all 41 construction workers trapped in a collapsed mountain tunnel in Uttarakhand after 17 days, the global media hailed the rescue operation and provided live coverage of the dramatic development.

"Outside the tunnel, there have been celebrations at the news of the first man coming out of the tunnel," the BBC reported while providing regular updates on the rescue operation.

It uploaded on its website a photograph that showed Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami and Union Minister VK Singh meeting the first worker rescued from the tunnel.

"Video footage from the scene showed Pushkar Singh Dhami, chief minister of Uttarakhand state meeting the workers, who appeared to be in good health, as they were removed from the tunnel amid jubilant scenes," CNN reported.

The first workers were removed following a series of agonizing setbacks, during which rescue efforts were halted when the heavy machinery used to drill through the debris broke down, forcing workers to partially dig by hand and adopt other riskier methods to bring them to safety, it said.

The evacuation of the men to safety began more than six hours after rescuers broke through to end an ordeal that began on November 12 when the tunnel caved in, Qatar-based news channel Al-Jazeera reported.

It said the ambulances with their lights flashing lined up at the mouth of the tunnel to transport the workers to a hospital about 30km away.

"The labourers are being pulled out through a passageway made of welded pipes that rescuers had previously pushed through dirt and rocks," it said.

British daily 'The Guardian' reported that the dramatic scenes of the first men emerging on stretchers from the entrance of the Silkyara-Barkot tunnel came after over 400 hours, during which the major rescue operation hit multiple obstacles, delays and false promises of imminent rescue.

"Human labour triumphed over machinery as the specialists managed to manually drill through the final 12 metres of rubble to reach the men. An 'escape passage' pipe was inserted, enabling the rescuers – carrying wheeled stretchers and oxygen cylinders – to enter and finally reach those inside," the paper said in its detailed report.

Military engineers and miners drill 'rat hole' through debris to complete a painstaking extraction mission, said London-based daily 'The Telegraph' in its lead story.

A portion of the tunnel collapsed on November 12, blocking the exit for the workers who were inside.

Food, medicines and other essentials were sent to them through a six-inch pipe pushed through the rubble of the collapsed portion. PTI ZH AKJ ZH ZH

Arab States, EU Agree Two-State Solution Answer To Israel-Hamas War

Arab states and the European Union agreed at a meeting in Spain on Monday that a two-state solution was the answer to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, with EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell saying the Palestinian Authority should rule Gaza.

Borrell said all EU members attending the meeting of Mediterranean nations in Barcelona and almost all attendees overall had agreed on the need for a two-state solution.

The Palestinian Authority must hold elections and improve its functioning but is the only "viable solution" to the future leadership of Gaza, currently run by Hamas Islamists, to avoid a "power vacuum", he said.

A current four-day truce is the first halt in fighting in the seven weeks since Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking about 240 hostages back into Gaza, according to Israeli tallies.

In response to that attack, Israel bombarded the enclave and mounted a ground offensive in the north. Some 14,800 Palestinians have been killed, Gaza health authorities say, and hundreds of thousands displaced.

Hamas said it wanted to extend the truce. An Israeli official told Reuters the onus was on Hamas to produce a new list of 10 hostages it could free on Tuesday in exchange for that becoming an additional truce day.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said the Palestinian people should decide who rules them, and that any talk of administration of Gaza after the conflict should focus on the West Bank and Gaza as one entity.

A two-state solution envisages a state for the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip alongside Israel.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki said the Palestinian Authority, which lost control of the Gaza Strip in a 2007 power struggle with Hamas, had no need to return to Gaza, adding: "We have been there all the time, we have 60,000 public workers there."

The three were speaking at the conclusion of a short meeting of the Forum for the Union of the Mediterranean in Barcelona, a 43-member grouping of European, North African and Middle Eastern countries.

Israel did not attend the summit. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan spoke as a representative of a group of ministers from the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

Borrell said he hoped the truce that began on Friday would last "a few more days".

Palestinian Foreign Minister al-Maliki said Qatar, Egypt, the United States, and the European Union were working to extend the truce, warning if it was not extended, the death count would double because Gaza's population was now concentrated in the south of the strip.

"We have an opportunity today that will end tonight, to extend the ceasefire... I count on the support of my colleagues... for us to all leave here with a loud and strong voice that can be heard in all parts of the world: no to the war, yes to the ceasefire," he said.

Jordan's Safadi added, however: "Some among us are still refusing to call for a ceasefire... We demand it be implemented immediately."

Hamas Delays Second Hostage Release, Israel Gives Midnight Deadline

The armed wing of Hamas said it had decided to delay Saturday's scheduled second round of hostage releases until Israel committed to allowing aid trucks to enter northern Gaza.

Hamas' al-Qassam Brigades said the hostage releases would be delayed if Israel did not adhere to the agreed terms for the release of Palestinian prisoners.

Israeli media on Saturday quoted an unnamed security source as saying that unless hostages are released by midnight, the military will resume its offensive in Gaza, after Hamas said it was delaying the swap deal.

The comment was carried by Channel 13 news, N12 News, Ynet news website and others.

Earlier, an Israeli military spokesperson had told France's BFM television station that, barring last-minute changes, 13 Israeli hostages were expected to be freed.

He said 39 Palestinian prisoners would be released in return.

Under the truce deal between Israel and Hamas, mediated by Qatar, a total of 50 hostages are to be exchanged for 150 Palestinian prisoners, some of them convicted on weapon charges and violent offences, over four days.

In the first exchange on Friday, 13 Israeli women and children - out of around 240 hostages captured by Hamas fighters on a killing spree in southern Israel on Oct. 7 - were released. Twenty-four jailed Palestinian women and 15 teenagers were released from Israeli jails.

Saturday's setback came just hours after Egypt, which controls the Rafah border crossing into southern Gaza through which vital aid supplies have resumed, said it had received "positive signals" from all parties over a possible extension of that deal.

Diaa Rashwan, the head of Egypt's State Information Service (SIS), said in a statement that Cairo was holding extensive talks with all parties to reach an agreement which would mean "the release of more detainees in Gaza and Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails."

Israel has said the ceasefire could be extended if Hamas continues to release hostages at a rate of at least 10 per day. A Palestinian source has said up to 100 hostages could go free.

Israel and Hamas have said hostilities would resume as soon as the truce ends, although U.S. President Joe Biden said on Friday there was a real chance of extending the truce.

Delhi Air Quality 'Severe' Again As Temperature Dips, Relief Likely Next Week

Air quality in Delhi turned 'severe' again on Friday with a dip in temperatures and slow wind speed at night allowing accumulation of pollutants.

The city's air quality index (AQI) that stood at 401 at 8 am had worsened to 415 by 4 pm.

A scientist at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted a brief relief due to a likely improvement in meteorological conditions under the influence of a western disturbance expected to affect northwest India starting November 27.

Delhi has been witnessing a gradual increase in AQI levels after a marginal improvement on Sunday.

The 24-hour average AQI, recorded at 4 pm every day, was 390 on Thursday, 394 on Wednesday, 365 on Tuesday, 348 on Monday and 301 on Sunday.

The rise in the AQI levels comes after the Centre on Saturday removed stringent curbs, including a ban on construction work related to linear projects and the entry of polluting trucks in Delhi, following a drop in pollution levels due to a favourable wind speed and direction.

Neighbouring Ghaziabad (401), Gurugram (335), Greater Noida (365), Noida (367) and Faridabad (415) also recorded 'very poor' to 'severe' air quality.

An AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor' , 301 and 400 'very poor', 401 and 450 'severe' and above 450 'severe-plus'.

According to the air quality early warning system developed by the Pune-based Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, pollution levels are likely to oscillate in the 'very poor' to 'severe' categories in the next few days.

Data from a joint project by the Delhi government and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, revealed that vehicular emissions accounted for about 38 per cent of the capital's air pollution on Thursday.

Secondary inorganic aerosols -- particles such as sulfate and nitrate that are formed in the atmosphere due to the interaction of gases and particulate pollutants from sources like power plants, refineries and vehicles -- are the second major contributor to Delhi's foul air, accounting for 25 to 35 per cent of the air pollution in the city over the last few days.

Biomass burning, including post-harvest paddy straw burning in neighbouring states, contributed 21 per cent to the capital's air pollution the previous day.

Trapped Workers' Rescue May Take "Few Hours Or Till Tomorrow": Official

National Disaster Management Authority on Thursday said there could be a "success" in bringing out 41 workers trapped inside the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarakhand in the next few hours or by Friday.

Briefing media about the ongoing rescue operations, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) member Lt Gen (retd) Syed Ata Hasnain, also added that it would not be fair to speculate on the timeline for rescue operations as it is just like fighting a war.

He also said that rescue work had stopped and is likely to start again shortly.

The NDMA member also said that the horizontal drilling to rescue workers may face 3-4 more hurdles.

He further said that 41 ambulances, one each for trapped workers, are in place at the tunnel site, and also facilities are in place to airlift workers in serious condition.

The men have been trapped for 11 days after a portion of the under-construction tunnel on the Uttarakhand Char Dham route collapsed, cutting off its exit.

Rescue operations to evacuate the workers resumed on Thursday morning after an overnight hurdle delayed the drilling by several hours.

Amway Faces Legal Action In Rs 4,050 Crore Alleged Money Laundering Case

The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) has filed a prosecution complaint under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002 against Amway India Enterprise Pvt. Ltd. (Amway). The complaint has been filed in the Court of the Hon'ble Metropolitan Sessions Judge cum Special Court (PMLA) in Hyderabad, which took cognizance of the matter on the same day.

The ED's investigation stems from various FIRs registered by the Telangana Police against Amway and its Directors under different sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The allegations suggest that Amway engaged in promoting an illegal 'Money Circulation Scheme' under the guise of selling goods, deceiving the public by promising high commissions and incentives through simple enrolment of new members.

According to the ED's findings, Amway has been operating a Pyramid scheme masquerading as direct selling. Instead of focusing on the direct sale of goods to end consumers, Amway introduced a multi-level marketing scheme with numerous intermediaries in the form of distributors.

The scheme's survival relies heavily on enrolling new members, with commissions and incentives increasing for those higher up in the hierarchy.

The ED contends that Amway's activities constitute a Multi-Level Marketing Scheme and Money Circulation Scheme, leading to the generation of proceeds of crime amounting to Rs 4050.21 Crore through the scheduled offence of cheating.

Furthermore, the investigation uncovered that over Rs 2,859 crore collected from members was allegedly siphoned off and transferred to the bank accounts of overseas investors, disguised as dividends, royalties, and other expenses.

As part of the enforcement measures, the ED has attached movable and immovable properties valued at Rs 757.77 Crore in connection with this case.

The investigation is ongoing, and the ED continues to delve into the complex financial dealings.

Amway's Response

In response to the ED's prosecution, Amway India issued a statement through its spokesperson, addressing the investigation that dates back to 2011.

Amway India Spokesperson said, "The Prosecution Complaint currently filed by the Enforcement Directorate pertains to the investigation dating back to 2011 and since then we have been cooperating with the department and have shared all the information as sought from time to time. Since Amway began its operations in India 25 years ago, it has been committed to legal and regulatory compliance and has diligently maintained a culture of compliance and integrity to the present day. We want to reiterate our continued confidence in the Indian legal and judicial system following the due process of law as we pursue our legal rights. Amway is proud of its rich history in India and will vigorously defend itself, as well as the over 2,500 employees and over 5.5 lakh independent distributors who are critical to its mission of helping people live healthier, better lives."

The company asserted its cooperation with the department, sharing all required information throughout the process. The spokesperson reiterated Amway's commitment to legal and regulatory compliance, emphasizing a culture of integrity and compliance since its establishment in India 25 years ago.

Amway expressed confidence in the Indian legal and judicial system, pledging to follow due process and defend itself vigorously.

Despite the legal challenges, Amway remains proud of its history in India and stands firm in its mission to support over 2,500 employees and more than 5.5 lakh independent distributors, aiming to contribute to healthier and better lives for people across the country, it said.

The company said it affirms its dedication to pursuing legal rights while navigating through the legal proceedings.

"Red Diary" Contains Ashok Gehlot's "Kacha Chitta": Amit Shah

In the run-up to the November 25 assembly elections, Union Home Minister Amit Shah hit out at Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, saying that the 'Laal Diary' contains Ashok Gehlot's ''Kacha Chitta', pointing to the rough draft of all calculations about the alleged scams that took place in the state under his watch.

"'Laal Diary' has Ashok Gehlot's 'Kacha Chitta'. It has all calculations of corruption worth thousands of crores," Amit Shah said while campaigning in Rajasthan's Bijainagar on Friday.

The Red Diary has become one of the most talked-about political accusations ever since sacked Rajasthan Minister Rajendra Gudha claimed that it contained information about financial transactions involving the Chief Minister.

Taking a jibe at the incumbent Chief Minister, Amit Shah advised some youths present at the public meeting not to wear 'red' clothes to Ashok Gehlot's campaign.

"Some youths have come here wearing red shirts and jerseys. It is okay that you have come to my public meeting. But don't go to Gehlot's meeting. Just like the bulls run seeing red, Gehlot will also...Do you know why? What is in the 'Laal Diary'?" Amit Shah asked.

The Union Home Minister said that Ashok Gehlot has indulged in so much corruption in these five years that the total proceeds of those scams, amount to more than those done by all the state governments in Rajasthan since independence.

"Gehlot has indulged in so much corruption in these five years that it amounts to more than those done by all the governments in Rajasthan since Independence," Amit Shah said.

Listing out the scams done by the Gehlot government, he said, "Whether it is in the Mining department, for giving mining pattas, Udaisagar Jheel, Pratapgarh Limestone mining...Even from their secretariats, in the offices of the secretaries, Rs 2 crore and some kilogrammes of gold were found in their cupboards."

Continuing his attack against the Gehlot government, Amit Shah said, "For five years, you've seen the Congress government. In these five years, if Congress has done anything big, it is corruption."

Appealing to people to vote for the "double engine" government in the state, Amit Shah said, "When you cast your vote for the Rajasthan Vidhan Sabha elections, do not think that you are voting to elect an MLA or BJP. But your vote is for Rajasthan and the country to prosper, to bring about a double-engine government in Rajasthan under the leadership of Narendra Modi."

Rajasthan is set to undergo assembly polls on November 25 and the counting of votes will be done on December 3. The BJP won 163 seats in the 2013 Legislative Assembly elections and formed the government in Rajasthan.

In the 2018 assembly elections, the Congress won 99 seats, while the BJP won 73 seats in the 200-member House. Ashok Gehlot eventually took the oath as Chief Minister with the support of BSP MLAs and Independents.

"Not Trying To Decouple From China But...": Biden Ahead Of Talks With Xi Jinping

President Joe Biden said Tuesday that the United States was not seeking to distance itself from China but in fact wanted an improved relationship, as he prepared for a highly anticipated summit with President Xi Jinping in San Francisco.

The two leaders will meet on the sidelines of the APEC summit in California for their first encounter in a year as trade tensions, sanctions and the question of Taiwan have fueled quarrels between the world's largest economies.

"We're not trying to decouple from China. What we're trying to do is change the relationship for the better," Biden told reporters at the White House shortly before heading to San Francisco.

Asked what he hoped to achieve at the meeting, he said he wanted "to get back on a normal course of corresponding; being able to pick up the phone and talk to one another if there's a crisis; being able to make sure our military still have contact with one another."

But Biden also warned that the United States was wary of investing in China due to Beijing's business practices.

"I'm not going to continue to sustain the support for positions where if we want to invest in China, we have to turn over all our trade secrets," he said.

Positive momentum from November 2022 talks between Xi and Biden in Bali was derailed when the United States shot down an alleged Chinese spy balloon, delaying a planned visit to Beijing by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Since then, a flurry of high-level diplomacy, including Blinken's eventual trip to China in June, has signaled a willingness on both sides to mend ties.

Asked about Beijing's expectations for the summit, China's foreign ministry remained vague, mentioning "in-depth communication" and "major issues concerning world peace."

China has also made clear that it will not budge on issues it considers red lines, such as Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own territory awaiting reunification, and its military expansion in the South China Sea.

But Washington and Beijing have recently made some progress on trade and economic relations, and climate change talks.

"If in fact the Chinese people, who are in trouble right now economically, if the average homeowner, if the average citizen in China, was able to have a decent paying job -- that benefits them, and benefits all of us," Biden said Tuesday.

Xi will have dinner with top US business leaders on his trip, and is expected to push for a relaxation of US trade curbs in his talks with Biden.

Delhi Health Minister Addresses Concerns At GTB Hospital Amid Sanitation Allegations

Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj on Wednesday visited a city government-run hospital in east Delhi, hours after Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal directed him to take corrective action following a social media post that alleged insanitary conditions in its toilets.

After visiting GTB Hospital, Bharadwaj said in a post on X that "instructions were issued to the health secretary" to take appropriate action against the culprits.

Earlier in the day, Kejriwal shared a post on X in response to one made late on Tuesday by a user, alleging insanitary conditions in the hospital's toilets.

"Delhi's sick hospital toilets are overflowing, full of filth; this is how the hospitals of Delhi are. The picture is of the largest GTB hospital across Yamuna, where patients, attendants, and staff have to pass by a toilet with a cloth over their mouths. The cleanliness system in the hospital is zero," the user alleged in the post, along with a photograph.

Responding to the post, Kejriwal directed Bharadwaj to visit the hospital and take "corrective steps" to improve amenities at the facility.

"I have directed the health minister to visit the hospital today along with senior officials and take corrective steps," he wrote.

Later in the evening, Bharadwaj said on X, "On the instructions of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the cleanliness system has been improved at GTB Hospital. Instructions were issued to the health secretary to take appropriate action against culprits so that patients do not have to face such problems in the future."

Bill Gates Predicts Everyone Will Have AI Personal Assistant In 5 Years, Reality To "Change Completely"

Bill Gates, a co-founder of Microsoft, made a bold forecast about artificial intelligence and stated that everyone will soon have a robot "agent" working for them, as per a report in Fortune. "In the near future, anyone who's online will be able to have a personal assistant powered by artificial intelligence that's far beyond today's technology," the billionaire said. He added that "software is still pretty dumb" even in this age and time. However, he predicts that the world would "change completely" in the next five years.

He added, "Agents are smarter. They're proactive- capable of making suggestions before you ask for them."

The tech mogul said that everyone will have a personal assistant that can do almost anything, pointing out that the technology can even arrange whole trips for its users. "When asked, it will recommend things to do based on your interests and propensity for adventure, and it will book reservations at the types of restaurants you would enjoy," Mr Gates said. He added, "If you want this kind of deeply personalized planning today, you need to pay a travel agent and spend time telling them what you want."

These remarks come as the world is witnessing advancement in AI technology, with the emergence of new platforms like OpenAI's ChatGPT, Microsoft's Bing, Google Bard and Elon Musk's Grok. Mr Gates went on to say that AI tools will "do even more" than productivity tools. "If you have an idea for a business, an agent will help you write up a business plan, create a presentation for it, and even generate images of what your product might look like," he stated.

"Companies will be able to make agents available for their employees to consult directly and be part of every meeting so they can answer questions," he continued.

He said that no single company will dominate the agent business. He did point out that most AI agents in the future will probably be available at a price. Mr Gates said, "(But) if the number of companies that have started working on AI just this year is any indication, there will be an exceptional amount of competition, which will make agents very inexpensive. Today, agents are embedded in other software like word processors and spreadsheets, but eventually they'll operate on their own. Whether you work in an office or not, your agent will be able to help you in the same way that personal assistants support executives today."

The co-founder of Microsoft claimed the technology will be utilised for a variety of purposes to simplify life, performing more intricate activities than those which are performed by voice assistants today. He asserted that they will be able to help with  "virtually any activity and any area of life."

"If your friend just had surgery, your agent will offer to send flowers and be able to order them for you. If you tell it you'd like to catch up with your old college roommate, it will work with their agent to find a time to get together, and just before you arrive, it will remind you that their oldest child just started college at the local university," he said.

PM Modi To Visit Birsa Munda's Village In Jharkhand, Launch Schemes For Tribals

Four days ahead of the Madhya Pradesh assembly polls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday reached out to tribals and announced he will go to the native village of their icon Birsa Munda on his birth anniversary and launch a welfare scheme for the community as he blasted the Congress was ignoring adivasis for 60 years.

Campaigning for the BJP for the November 17 polls, Prime Minister Modi assured the people of Madhya Pradesh that all promises made by the ruling party will be fulfilled if it retains power and advised them to be wary of the Congress, saying the opposition outfit can even promise to build a "castle of gold" to wins elections.

"After two days, Bhawan Birsa Munda's birth anniversary will fall (on November 15). We celebrate it as 'Janjatiya Gaurav Divas' (Tribal Pride Day). Tribesmen have played a big role in freedom struggle," he said, addressing an election meeting in Barwani district which has a sizeable number of adivasis.

The Congress never cared for tribals, while the BJP stands for their respect and social justice, said Prime Minister Modi.

"I am going to the village of Bhagwan Birsa Munda in Jharkhand on November 15 where I will launch a welfare scheme for tribals. I am going to bow down there," the Prime Minister stated.

Madhya Pradesh has the highest tribal population among all states. It has 47 assembly seats, out of the total 230, reserved for candidates from scheduled tribes. In the last assembly elections in MP, the BJP did not fare well in tribal reserved seats.

Official sources said in New Delhi the Prime Minister will launch a Rs 24,000 crore scheme aimed at holistic development of Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) on the occasion of 'Janjatiya Gaurav Divas' in Jharkhand.

The scheme -- PVTG Development Mission -- will be a huge step towards the empowerment of tribals, they said, adding this will be a first-of-its-kind initiative.

At the Barwani rally, Prime Minister Modi accused the Congress of ignoring tribals while in power.

"In 60 years after Independence, the Congress neither worked for tribal development nor accorded them respect," he maintained.

Modi reminded the gathering that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government, headed by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, had set up a separate ministry for tribal development.

"When a BJP government was formed at the Centre, our tribal brothers got their due respect, and a separate ministry for tribal welfare was created," he said.

He maintained the indigenous people in Madhya Pradesh have benefited from the "double-engine" government (BJP in power in the state and also at the Centre).

Asking voters not be get carried away with the "false" promises of the opposition party, the Prime Minister said, "Wherever the Congress comes to power, crime rate reaches its peak, riots become commonplace and atrocities against sisters and daughters increase." The BJP's star campaigner said states governed by the Congress have flourished after the party has been removed from power.

"Wherever the Congress comes to power even prosperous states get ruined. After getting power, the Congress indulges in loot. The people of MP have to be vigilant," he maintained.

Mentioning the 2022 killing of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor in Udaipur, Prime Minister Modi said, "Could we even imagine that in India we would ever hear a slogan like 'sar tan se juda' (a reference to beheading)? But this has happened in the land of braves - Rajasthan - under misrule of the Congress." Kanhaiya Lal, 48, was killed with a cleaver inside his shop on June 28, 2022. The assailants claimed they hacked Lal to death to avenge an alleged insult to Islam.

Rajasthan is going to the polls later this month.

He pointed out that the Grand Old Party had promised the sun and the moon to farmers, women, youths and state government employees of Himachal Pradesh, but they all were deceived after it won elections last year in the hill state.

Karnataka, where the Congress came to power in May this year, also went down the same path, Modi and added development has come to a standstill in the southern state.

"If the Congress can do this to a prosperous state like Karnataka what will they do to Madhya Pradesh?", the Prime Minister said, cautioning the people of the BJP-ruled state against the opposition party Modi said the Congress can even promise to build a "castle of gold" to the people of Madhya Pradesh to win elections anyhow.

"The Congress had pushed MP into a "dark well". The BJP has pulled it out The Congress only aims to fill its empty coffers after coming to power," he stated.

"They will promise to give a palace of gold and then say they will extract gold from potatoes and then build it," he remarked, taking a jibe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's 2017 comment of making "gold from potatoes".

People can see in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan (both ruled by the Congress), how piles of notes earned through illegal means were coming out every day, Prime Minister Modi stated.

The Prime Minister said abuses hurled at him will be crushed by people's love for him.

"Money was stashed under beds. You love Modi, they (Congress) abuse me. Let them abuse, your love will crush their abuses," he said, apparently referring to ED's claim that a forensic analysis and a statement made by a 'cash courier' have led to allegations that Mahadev betting app promoters have paid Rs 508 crore to Chhattisgarh Chief Minister and Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel.

Baghel has denied the claim.

The Prime Minister said the November 17 elections in Madhya Pradesh are not just a fight between the BJP and the Congress.

"These elections are about deciding the bright future of Madhya Pradesh," he asserted.

The Prime Minister said no one trusts the words and promises of the Congress because of its track record in office.

"The Congress ruled from Panchayat to Parliament for 60 years, but it neither thought of welfare of tribals nor gave respect to them," he said.

The Prime Minister assured the people of Madhya Pradesh that all promises made by his party BJP to them will be fulfilled after the party retains power in the state.

"All promises made to you will be fulfilled. This is my guarantee," Prime Minister Modi asserted.

He said the Centre's free ration scheme, which was started during the coronavirus pandemic and covers 80 crore poor people, will be extended for five years.

The scheme, Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, is ending next month.

Madhya Pradesh will have a single phase polling for its 230 seats and results will be announced on December 3.

Lion Sleeps It Off After Stroll Through Italian Town

A lion that escaped from an Italian circus has been taking well-deserved naps to recover from a Saturday night out in the seaside town of Ladispoli that sparked panic before authorities managed to recapture him.

The adult lion, named "Kimba", escaped from the "Rony Roller" circus on Saturday afternoon and was on the loose for around seven hours before it was sedated with an aesthetic dart. Footage and pictures, some taken by locals, went viral and showed the lion roaming around the town streets, skirting houses and fences, and standing in front of a carabinieri police car.

Local authorities are investigating how the lion managed to get out of its metal enclosure. "What happened is very strange...All we can say is that a lion does not have the ability to open a latch and break a lock," Rony Vassallo, the animal supervisor and trainer at the circus told Reuters.

In a Facebook post on Monday, local mayor Alessandro Grando wrote that he would ask council experts to check if there were legal grounds to revoke the permits for the "Rony Roller" circus. The travelling circus was scheduled to stay in Ladipsoli between November 9-19.

Some locals expressed solidarity with Kimba. "I am sorry because it is in prison. It should be in its environment, the savannah," said Ladispoli resident Giuseppe Altavilla.

Israel Says Its Under $8 Billion Debt Since War With Hamas Began In October

Israel has raised about 30 billion shekels ($7.8 billion) in debt since the start of the war with Hamas militants, the Finance Ministry said on Monday.

Slightly more than half of that - 16 billion shekels - was dollar-denominated debt raised in issuances in international markets, it said.

The ministry on Monday raised another 3.7 billion shekels in the local market in its weekly bond auction.

"The financing capabilities of the State of Israel allow the government to fully and optimally finance all its needs," the ministry's accountant-general division said.

The war that began on Oct. 7 when Hamas gunmen rampaged through Israeli towns has sharply boosted Israel's expenses to fund the military as well as to compensate businesses near the border and families of victims and hostages taken by Hamas. At the same time, tax income has slowed.

As a result, Israel recorded a budget deficit of 22.9 billion shekels in October, a leap from 4.6 billion in September and pushing up the deficit over the prior 12 months to 2.6%.

The ministry said it would continue to operate "in all channels in order to finance the government's activities, including all the needs arising from the ... war and the economic and civil aid to the home front."

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to "open the taps" to help those impacted by the war, which economists believe will sharply push up the deficit and debt to GDP ratio through 2024.

But Bank of Israel Governor Amir Yaron has said the government needs to balance "supporting the economy and maintaining a sound fiscal position."

Credit rating agencies have already warned they could cut Israel's ratings if debt metrics deteriorate.

The accountant general denied an Israeli media report that the state would apply for a loan from the Bank of Israel for the first time since 1986.

Delhi Residents Celebrate Diwali With Crackers Despite Supreme Court Ban

The ban on firecrackers was violated in several areas of Delhi as people celebrated Diwali on Sunday.

People burst firecrackers in Shahpur Jat and Hauz Khas area. Several people were seen gathering at the park of the locality for bursting crackers.

The intensity of bursting firecrackers increased after 4 pm, but it was comparatively lesser than the last year.

Not many people were seen venturing out of their houses in and around the locality, except a few.

Speaking to PTI, environmentalist Bhavreen Kandhari said that bursting of firecrackers was reported at her residential area Defence Colony too.

She said that complaints were also registered at the Defence Colony police station, but no change was noticed.

"The Supreme Court's firm stance on firecrackers got blown in the smoke of the firecrackers. Despite warnings and a complete ban...implementing authorities have failed yet again. Wondering what stance will the Supreme Court take now? ...We are allowing our children to choke in the name of celebration," she said.

Till 7.30 pm, the intensity of bursting firecrackers was less in Greater Kailash and Chittaranjan Park area. It is expected that people will burst firecrackers after performing puja, people in the locality said.

In the Chhatarpur locality of south Delhi, sounds of firecrackers being burst could be heard from 6 pm onwards.

Many shopkeepers in the area were seen flouting the ban and selling small firecrackers to children.

Firecrackers were also burst by some people in south Delhi's East of Kailash area.

From 6:30 pm onwards, intermittent noise of firecrackers going off in the distance could be heard from households. While some went off with low intensity, a few other firecrackers produced booming sounds.

Meanwhile, very few firecrackers were burst in the Lalita Park area of Laxmi Nagar till 7:30 pm. Locals said the intensity may go up later in the night.

The effect was moderate in several other areas of east Delhi.

However, the firecrackers being burst this year was reportedly negligible when compared to the last year, according to residents in these localities.

The Supreme Court on November 7 had said that it order banning firecrackers containing barium binds every state and is not just limited to the Delhi-NCR region, which is reeling under severe air pollution

This Bridge From Assam Is "Looking Like A Wow", Himanta Sarma Agrees

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is the latest entrant to the "just looking like a wow" parade. Mr Sarma today used the viral caption while sharing breathtaking photos of the Kolia Bhomora Setu in Assam's Tezpur.

"So beautiful, So Elegant, Just Looking Like a WOW!" Mr Sarma wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Sharing another photo of the bridge, Mr Sarma said, "The mighty Himalayas visible on a winter morning from Kolia Bhomora Setu, Tezpur. Low AQI & a pollution-free environment enable this crystal clear view, captured by Gautam Deka, of the magnificent mountain range located near the Arunachal-Tibet border."

Kolia Bhomora Setu was built in 1987 over the Brahmaputra and connects Tezpur in Sonitpur district on the northern bank with Kaliabor in Nagaon District on the south bank of the river.

The bridge has been named after the Assamese General, Kalia Bhomora Phukan.

Just 3 kilometres long, the bridge plays a key role in connecting the seven Northeastern states to the rest of the country.

To highlight the beauty of the bridge, Mr Sarma used the 'Just like a wow' trend which has taken the internet by storm. This trend is omnipresent and is gaining traction not only among celebrities and athletes but also among politicians.

It started with a video of a woman named Jasmeen Kaur enthusiastically selling salwar suits on Instagram. In the video, Kaur repeatedly uses the phrase "just looking like a wow" to describe the clothes, and her infectious energy and excitement quickly made the video go viral.

Hamas Hiding Weapons, Explosives In Kindergarten: Israel In New Video

Israel claimed that their troops, which are conducting operations in the Gaza Strip, have discovered weapons, ammunition and explosive devices inside a kindergarten. The Israeli Defence Forces claimed that the school was being used by Hamas to store weapons.

Sharing a video on X (formerly Twitter), Israel Army wrote, "IDF troops found weapons, ammunition and explosive devices inside a Gazan kindergarten while operating in northern Gaza. Explosives. Inside a kindergarten."

The IDF added troops have seized many weapons and intelligence detailing "significant" Hamas battle plans from residential areas in North Gaza. Soldiers also uncovered tunnel shafts, including one adjacent to a kindergarten which the IDF said led to an "extensive underground route."

Israel has rejected rising international calls for a ceasefire in Gaza saying that it won't stop military operations in the besieged strip till Hamas is destroyed. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also dismissed the idea of the Palestinian authority returning to govern Gaza after the war ends.

Israel said rockets were still being fired from Gaza into southern Israel, where it has said about 1,200 people were killed and more than 200 taken hostage by Hamas last month.

Palestinian officials said on Friday that 11,078 Gaza residents had been killed in air and artillery strikes since Oct. 7, around 40% of them children.

Watch: New Yorkers Lift Illegally Parked Car To Give Way To Bus, Internet Calls Them "Heroes"

In an inspiring display of working together for the community, a group of New Yorkers got together to lift an illegally parked car and move it to the side in order to give way to a bus. A video posted on Instagram by Reddit showed the group of pedestrians joining hands to accomplish the seemingly impossible task.

"Every day heroes for sure," the caption of the post read. "New Yorkers lift illegally parked car, so Metro bus can turn," read the text on the clip.

Watch the video below:

In the video, a few people are seen standing around a car. Moments later, they are seen lifting the vehicle and moving it out of the way so the bus can operate freely.

The clip was shared on Instagram a few days back and since it has accumulated more than 167,000 likes and nearly 3 million views. Internet users were quick to praise the bystanders for ensuring the bus could resume its service promptly.

"Wow! Nice to see something positive from the Big Apple! Great job men!" wrote one user. "Together. We can move mountains!" commented another.

"See, that's community. We mind our business when it matters, but some things are just unacceptable. You don't block traffic," expressed a third. "Used to drive buses in NYC, I've hit a few illegally parked cars in my day. Best part is cops ticket the illegally parked car and their insurance company has to pay for the damages to the bus," added another.

A person also explained how irresponsible parking can cause much inconvenience for everyone. "As a disabled rider dependent on public transportation, I daily see how stupid people who park, or "wait" in their cars. They not only inconvenience, obstruct, actually endanger, riders, drivers, bystanders, buses, other cars and drivers, and sometimes train. Simply to indulge self centered desire for saving a few seconds, or a few steps. Penalties should be more severe. Vehicles more quickly impounded," they wrote.

Hezbollah Says Using Burkan Missiles For "First Time" In Fight Against Israel

Hezbollah's chief said Saturday that the group was using new weapons in attacks against Israel, as exchanges of fire on Lebanon's southern border intensify while Israel battles Hamas militants in Gaza.

Over the past week, the Iran-backed group has "bolstered" its action "on the Lebanese front in terms of the number of operations, targets and the type of weapons", Hassan Nasrallah said in his second televised address since the Hamas-Israel war began.

The Shiite Muslim movement has used "Burkan missiles", for the first time, he said, adding that they could carry "a payload of 300-500 kilogrammes" (660-1,100 pounds).

The group has been using attack drones "for the first time in the history of the resistance" in Lebanon, he said, and has been flying "reconnaissance drones" deep into Israel daily, "some reaching Haifa, Acre and Safed" in the country's north.

Since Hamas's October 7 attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip, Lebanon's southern border has seen intensifying tit-for-tat exchanges, mainly between Israel and Hezbollah, an ally of the Palestinian group, stoking fears of a broader conflagration.

Israeli fire has killed at least 68 Hezbollah fighters since last month, according to an AFP tally, as well as at least 11 civilians in Lebanon and 12 other combatants.

Six soldiers and two civilians have been killed in northern Israel.

Hezbollah fighters "are putting themselves on the front line to launch rockets" at Israeli targets, Nasrallah said, adding that Israeli drones were constantly flying over southern Lebanon.

Noting attacks on Israel and on US troops in the Middle East by other Iran-backed groups including from Iraq and Yemen, Nasrallah told Washington: "If you Americans want to stop these operations... you must stop the war on Gaza."

He said "several" Hezbollah members were killed in Syria on Friday, where the group has long been deployed on the side of President Bashar al-Assad in his country's civil war.

Hezbollah said Friday that Israeli fire killed seven of its fighters, without specifying where or when they died.

Israel's military said it struck an organisation in Syria that was behind a drone crash into a school in southern Israel a day earlier.

Israeli officials say Hamas militants killed about 1,200 people and took some 240 hostages in the October 7 attacks that triggered the war.

Israel's subsequent aerial and ground offensive has killed more than 11,000 people in Gaza, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-run Palestinian territory.

Ethics Panel Report On Mahua Moitra Submitted To Speaker's Office: Sources

Lok Sabha's Ethics Committee Chairman Vinod Kumar Sonkar has submitted the report of the panel on the 'cash-for-query' allegation against TMC MP Mahua Moitra to the office of Speaker Om Birla, sources said on Friday.

The Committee, at a meeting on Thursday, had adopted by majority the report that recommended Moitra's expulsion from the House for accepting "illegal gratifications" from businessman Darshan Hiranandani to raise questions in Parliament at his behest.

The committee recommended Ms Moitra's expulsion from the Lok Sabha for "unethical conduct" and "contempt of the House''.

Six of the 10 members present at the Committee meeting on Thursday voted in support of the 479-page report while four opposition members recorded their disapproval.

According to sources, Mr Birla is in Kota and is likely to return to the national capital after Diwali (November 12), following which he is expected to take action on the report.

India To Be Added To UK Safe States List: What It Means

The UK government has tabled plans to add India to an expanded list of safe states, which would speed up the process of returning Indians who travel from the country illegally and rule out their chance of seeking asylum in Britain.

Draft legislation laid in the House of Commons on Wednesday includes India and Georgia as the countries to be added to the list. The UK Home Office said the move is aimed at strengthening the country's immigration system and help prevent abuse by people making unfounded protection claims.

“We must stop people making dangerous and illegal journeys to the UK from fundamentally safe countries,” said UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman.

“Expanding this list will allow us to more swiftly remove people with no right to be here and sends a clear message that if you come here illegally, you cannot stay. We remain committed to delivering the measures in our Illegal Migration Act, which will play a part in the fight against illegal migration,” she said.

The move is in line with measures to meet British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's pledge to “stop the boats” of migrants landing on the country's shores illegally after making precarious journeys across the English Channel. The Home Office said that Indian and Georgian small boat arrivals have increased over the last year, despite individuals from these countries not being at obvious risk of persecution.

"Deeming these countries safe will mean that if an individual arrives illegally from either one, we will not admit their claim to the UK asylum system,” the Home Office said.

Other countries deemed safe by the UK include Albania and Switzerland, as well as the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) states. A country can only be added to the UK's safe states list – known legislatively as Section 80AA – if the Home Secretary is satisfied that there is, in general, no serious risk of persecution of its nationals, and; removal of nationals to that country cannot go against the UK's obligations under the Human Rights Convention.

"The Home Office has rigorously assessed India and Georgia and determined that both meet these criteria,” the Home Office noted.

The proposal will now undergo parliamentary scrutiny in the usual way via debates in both Houses of Parliament before it comes into force. The latest measures fall within the Illegal Migration Act 2023, which aims to "stop the boats" by changing the law so that people who come to the UK illegally can be detained and then swiftly returned to a safe third country or their home country. Further measures, including the legal duty to remove, will be rolled out in the coming months.

The Home Office said the government remains determined to stop the boats and deter people from making dangerous journeys to the UK. The Illegal Migration Act is described as an important part of the government's effort to break the cycle, end exploitation by gangs and prevent further loss of life.

"This issue is being tackled on all fronts, including working upstream with international partners, clamping down on the criminal gangs with stepped-up enforcement, and working with the French to prevent more crossings,” the Home Office said.

The draft legislation adding India and Georgia to the Section 80AA list will be made pursuant to the UK's Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002, after the ability to do so was put in place through the Illegal Migration Act 2023.

"Extremely Unfortunate": Sikh body On Strain In India-Canada Ties

Amid a diplomatic row between India and Canada, the general house of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee Wednesday passed a resolution urging the two countries to remove bitterness in their relations.

The SGPC's general house also passed resolutions over issues including the release of Sikh prisoners, the Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) canal and the simplification of SGPC's voter registration process.

The resolution on the India-Canada row said due to the situation between the two countries, Sikhs and Punjabis are facing hate propaganda for no reason. This is extremely unfortunate, towards which the two governments should give serious consideration, it said.

The ties between India and Canada came under severe strain following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations of "potential" involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June on Canadian soil. India has rejected the allegations as "absurd" and "motivated".

The SGPC resolutions also demanded ending "discrimination" against the Punjabi language and taking care of Sikh heritage in Pakistan.

The general house of the SGPC assembled here to elect its president and other office bearers, including the general secretary, senior vice president and junior vice president.

In a resolution demanding the release of Sikh prisoners, it was said that this "discrimination" was a violation of human rights. The Sikh prisoners are not being released even after completion of their sentences, it said.

Through this resolution, it was demanded from the Centre and concerned state (Delhi and Karnataka) governments to stop discrimination against the Sikhs and release the Sikh prisoners immediately.

The SGPC has been seeking the release of Sikh prisoners including Balwant Singh Rajoana, a convict in former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh's assassination case and Devinderpal Singh Bhullar, a 1993 Delhi bomb blast convict.

Through another resolution, a commitment was expressed to protect Punjab rivers and oppose the SYL canal. It was said that the SGPC will play a leading role in every struggle for water of Punjab.

In the resolution passed regarding the alleged discrimination against the Punjabi language, it has been said that in Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, the people of Punjabi origin are allegedly forced to submit applications in the government offices for their work in Hindi and English languages, which should stop immediately.

In another resolution, the government of Pakistan was requested for the maintenance and preservation of Sikh heritage and historical Gurdwara Sahibs there.

It was said that many places were neglected after the Partition in 1947, to which the government and the Evacuee Trust Property Board should pay special attention.
