Here Are Some New Year Resolutions For 2023

New Year would mean starting afresh. You wake up on the first day of the year with a lot of enthusiasm. Well, do you also believe in New Year's resolutions? What does that mean?  People set some personal goals at the beginning of the year, and try to accomplish them. So, if you are planning on embracing some good habits and setting new goals, take a look at the list below. The pointers can help you decide on a resolution that you can follow in the new year.

Here are some New Year resolutions that you can make:

1)Exercise more

When the aim is to lead a healthy lifestyle, you automatically think of including a proper workout regime in your routine. This is also important because regular workout improves your mood and reduces stress that often tends to build up considering the workload and hectic lifestyle. The thought of exercising more in the coming year can be a great way to start afresh. You can set a proper timetable for yourself according to which, you will dedicate most of your time exercising.

2) Healthy eating habits

Now, this is another way to keep yourself in good health. So, make sure that you consume a balanced diet and savour other food items that are high in nutrition. The task can be easier if you avoid junk and processed foods and refrain from haphazard eating patterns (including midnight munching).

3) Time management

Now, this can be the toughest one. You may have a lot of pending assignments, or incomplete tasks from the previous year. So, now, it's time to realise that the cycle should not repeat. Focus more on yourself and your personal and professional growth. Set goals every week and try to accomplish every task on time.

4) Save money

Adverse situations and challenging times, including the pandemic, taught us the importance of savings. Life is unpredictable and you have to be prepared financially to face every situation that pops up. Managing your finances is a task and you should know how to do it properly. Start saving money if you haven't already. Reduce unnecessary expenses and start investing in things that are more important.

5) Quit a bad habit

You can make a resolution and promise yourself that you will not indulge in any of the aforementioned habits. Try to stay healthy and make yourself understand how these habits may affect your health. Not just drinking or smoking, you can also quit other habits that restrict you to become a better individual.

So, have you made a resolution for yourself already?

Ukraine Will Fight Russia Until Victory: Zelensky In New Year Address

Ukraine will fight the Russian invasion until victorious, President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his New Year address Saturday, paying tribute to all those taking part in the war effort. "We fight and will continue to fight. For the sake of the main word: 'victory'," he said, as his country saw the old year out.

Hours after Ukraine suffered another wave of Russian missile attacks, Zelensky remained defiant in an emotional speech in which he heaped praise on all those people involved in the war in Ukraine.

"I want to say to all of you: Ukrainians, you are incredible! See what we have done and what we are doing!

"How our soldiers have been smashing this 'second army of the world' since the first days.

"How our people stopped their equipment and infantry columns...

"There are no small matters in a great war," Zelensky added.

"There are no unnecessary ones. Each of us is a fighter. Each of us is a front. Each of us is the basis of the defense.

"We fight as one team -- the whole country, all our regions. I admire you all. I want to thank every invincible region of Ukraine."

The latest wave of Russian missile strikes on Ukraine included several hits in Kyiv.

AFP journalists heard at least 11 loud blasts in the early afternoon, and the city's mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least one person had been killed as a result of the attacks.

City officials said several others had been wounded.

Shimla's Hotels See Lowest Tourist Occupancy In 40 Years On New Year's Eve

The state capital was abuzz with activity as thousands of tourists made a beeline to Shimla to welcome the New Year but the occupancy in hotels was about 80 per cent, the lowest in the past four decades.

Snowfall in Manali, craze to see Atal Tunnel, the new gateway to Lahaul and Spiti, has increased the footfall to the Kullu district that registered over 90 per cent occupancy, office bearers of the hotel industry said.

Whereas no entry to tourist vehicles without a booking in Shimla city and apprehensions after last year's bomb hoax at New Year has hit the footfall in Shimla, they said.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu had a stroll on the Mall Road on New Year's eve on Saturday evening.

He interacted with the local residents and the tourists and wished them a happy and prosperous year ahead.

A large number of tourists were seen roaming on the Mall Road and the Ridge to celebrate New Year and police have been deployed in strength to ensure that no untoward incident takes place.

The hoteliers claim that even in Covid years of 2020 and 2021, the restrictions were lifted by the year end and Shimla witnessed 95-100 per cent occupancy.

The Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) has organised events to mark Christmas and New Year in prime properties in Shimla, Manali, Chail, Dharamshala and other places and private hotels are also hosting events to welcome tourists on New Year.

As New Year falls on a weekend this time, we were expecting a huge rush but so far the occupancy is about 80 per cent which is the lowest in the past 37-38 years, vice president of Shimla Hotel and Restaurant Association Prince Kukreja said.

He said that snowfall at Manali and the craze for Atal Tunnel has turned tourists towards Manali. Besides this, the new Covid variant could also be a reason behind low footfall here, he said.

There is a huge rush of vehicles on roads and traffic jams are a common sight but this rush has not converted into occupancy and it seems that illegal tourism units are having a field day, Kukreja said.

However, president Tourism Industry Stakeholders Association M K Seth said that a large number of online bookings have been cancelled as the district administration decided not to allow tourist vehicles without hotel booking into the city and the occupancy in Shimla city is about 80 per cent, the lowest in the past four decades.

The orders of the district administration to not allow tourist vehicles without hotel bookings in Shimla city resulted in low footfall of visitors as they planned to go to destinations with lesser restrictions and more convenience, he said.

A huge chunk of tourists from the neighbouring states come without booking, Seth said.

The district administration, in a release, had informed that tourists with confirmed hotel bookings would be allowed in the city while tourist vehicles without confirmed bookings would be parked at Tutikandi parking.

Shuttle service (HRTC bus service) would be available to the city's Old Bus Stand, Central Telegraph Office. Tourist buses and heavy vehicles would not be allowed in the city. In case of heavy rush vehicles would be diverted through Tutikandi-Malyana road, officials said.

In case of heavy vehicular traffic, vehicles would be staggered from Shoghi. The idea is to provide safe and trouble-free stay for tourists and avoid traffic jams in the city, they added.

An additional police force has been deployed and the city has been divided into six sectors, Deputy Commissioner Shimla Aditya Negi said, adding that the responsibility of overseeing each sector has been assigned to the magistrate and nodal police officers have also been deployed in each sector to ensure traffic management and maintain law and order.

President Manali Hoteliers Association Mukesh Thakur said the occupancy is over 90 per cent here as Atal Tunnel (Rohtang) has increased the tourist footfall in the twin districts of Lahaul and Spiti and Kullu besides snowfall in Manali is a major attraction.

Gondola at Solang, Igloo stays in Hamta, winter sports activities in and around Manali, skiing and snowboarding courses offered by Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports Manali too are the major tourist attractions, he said.

However, he said the huge rush of vehicles is not converted into room occupancy as a large number of people from outside the state have taken properties on lease and are running accommodations as tourism units without registration.

These illegal properties are offering rooms at heavy discounts, Thakur added.

As many as 1.39 crore tourists visited Himachal till November 30 this year compared to 56.37 lakhs last year, as per data procured from the tourism department which was hoping to touch the pre-Covid tourist inflow figures by the year end as December is the peak tourist season.

The tourism and allied industry suffered immense losses during the Covid pandemic and tourist inflow dropped by 81 per cent in 2020 compared to 2019. The tourist arrival in Himachal Pradesh was 1.72 crore in 2019, which crashed to 32.13 lahks in 2020 and marginally recovered to 56.37 lahks in 2021.

With a surge in Covid cases around the globe, the state health had issued an advisory to observe Covid appropriate behaviour to keep a check on the increase in Covid cases in the near future.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has directed tourism and other departments to follow the slogan of 'Atithi Devo Bhava', facilitate the tourists and make adequate arrangements and proper traffic plans in all districts for the smooth flow of traffic.

He has also allowed eateries at tourist places to be opened round the clock.

Home Quarantine Mandatory In Karnataka For Flyers From High-Risk Countries

The Karnataka government on Saturday issued revised guidelines against COVID infections among people coming from high-risk countries. The guidelines say that 7 days of home quarantine is mandatory for those coming from high-risk countries from the time of their arrival. The government has made negative COVID status a must for passengers coming from those nations.

The government decided to enhance surveillance and containment effort within the State by tracking and quarantining the primary and secondary contacts of the COVID-positive persons.

“The international travelers from high-risk countries - China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand - need to be home quarantined for 7 days from the date of their arrival. Once tested positive, the infected people are to be treated and managed as per the State COVID protocol,” said a circular from Health Department meant for the international passengers.

Further, it said the RT-PCR certificate of each passenger should be verified for negative COVID status before allowing them to leave the airport.

Airport authorities should provide necessary assistance in this regard, the Health Department said.

It said the district health officer of Bengaluru Urban district, Bengaluru Rural and Kolar have to depute 5 health information officers (HIO) each from their district to Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru from January 1 on a rotation basis until further orders.

The HIOs would carry out the exercise round the clock for which the district health officers have to make necessary travel arrangements for the deputed staff.

“On arrival if any of the international passengers from China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand countries are found symptomatic, they shall be immediately isolated and transferred to the designated medical facility for clinical management,” the guideline said.

It said the samples should be collected and submitted for RT-PCR testing and for genome sequencing if tested positive in RT-PCR.

Other asymptomatic passengers should leave the airport and self-monitor their health for symptoms and comply with COVID-appropriate behaviour (CAB) like wearing of face masks, social distancing, practise respiratory and hand hygiene, and strictly remain under home quarantine for the next seven days, the guideline added.

“If the passengers develop symptoms like fever, cough, cold, body ache, headache, loss of taste and smell, diarrhoea and breathing difficulty, they shall immediately self-isolate and report to the local surveillance health team for testing,” the Health Department said.

“If tested positive, they shall be shifted to the designated medical facility (government or private) for isolation. Positive samples shall be sent for genome sequencing,” it added.

If the genome sequencing report shows anyone positive for the BF.7 variant or a new sub-variant, then another sample should be taken for RT-PCR and the person should follow CAB strictly till the results are known, the department said.

“If children below 12 years of age who are exempted from both pre-departure and post-arrival testing develop symptoms on arrival or during the period of self-monitoring and home quarantine for next seven days, they shall follow the same protocol as above for adults except that a parent or guardian in good health shall accompany them and be the care-giver to the child during the period of isolation and treatment as applicable,” the guidelines read.

The department said the 10 per cent of the international passengers from the high-risk countries should be monitored through call centre on a daily basis for symptoms and for further action.

The Health Department issued circular for the people of Karnataka in view of rising cases in certain parts of the world.

The measures have been taken in view of the new Variant of Concern (VoC)- XBB and BF-7 spreading rapidly in few countries of the globe and a few cases are reported in India and the State of Karnataka too, it said.

In its circular, the government said the primary contacts and secondary contacts (PC/SC) should be quarantined within 24 hours of identification at their designated places or home.

According to the Health Department, currently about 30 to 40 cases are being reported daily in Karnataka and the test positivity rate (TPR) has been around 0.5 per cent to 0.7 per cent for the past five months.

Covid Deaths Hit 9,000 Per Day In China, Finds UK-Based Firm: Report

Deaths attributed to Covid in China have increased to 9,000 people per day, according to a data firm, reported news.com.au, an Australia-based publication.

The news.com.au report also says, "British-based research firm Airfinity has doubled the number of people it estimates are dying from Covid in China as the number of infections soar. It comes after Beijing lifted draconian zero-Covid health measures in November that had been in place for years."

Protests erupted across China due to the harsh lockdowns after 10 people died in an apartment fire. There were allegations that firefighters were stopped from coming inside the apartment block due to the quarantine orders.

The country reversed its Covid policy due to widespread protests in its nine cities.

"Airfinity said its model was based on data from China's regional provinces before changes to reporting infections were implemented, combined with case growth rates from other former zero-Covid countries when they lifted restrictions," the report said.

The total number of deaths in China linked to Covid in December may hit 100,000, with at least 18.6 million cases. By mid-January, there could be as many as 3.7 million COVID cases in a day. By January 23, a total of 584,000 deaths are expected in China.

According to news.com.au, "Beijing has been accused of withholding health information so it's hard to accurately assess the numbers. However, China's National Health Commission (NHC) last week confirmed that the country's current outbreak is the largest the world has ever seen."

"More than a billion Chinese could be infected with Covid by March. And more than 30 per cent of the population may have already been infected, that is up to 400 million people," according to a The Australian report.

The virus is continuing to spread rapidly in China. Workers, however, are being called to go to work unless they have extreme symptoms.

Since China relaxed its controversial zero-Covid policy last month, the second-largest economy is struggling to deal with the meteoric rise in coronavirus cases throughout the country which is putting a burden on its healthcare system.

British virologist and biologist Jonathan Latham, Executive Director of the Bioscience Resource Project, said that Beijing is not being open and transparent about case numbers or deaths and that only accurate data can lead to good decisions in China and elsewhere.

"China is not being open and transparent about case numbers or deaths. This is true for many countries though. It would be great to have truly accurate information on those points, however, since only timely and accurate data can lead to good decisions in China and elsewhere. Good data would also test the theory that newer variants such as Omicron have a lower inherent death rate," Latham told ANI.

Bankman-Fried Set To Enter Initial Not Guilty Plea In FTX Fraud: Report

Sam Bankman-Fried is expected on Tuesday to enter an initial plea of not guilty to criminal charges that he cheated investors and looted billions of dollars at his now-bankrupt FTX cryptocurrency exchange, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Bankman-Fried is accused of illegally using FTX customer deposits to support his Alameda Research hedge fund, buy real estate and make millions of dollars in political contributions.

He is scheduled to appear at 2 p.m. EST (1900 GMT) on Tuesday before U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan in Manhattan to enter a plea.

A lawyer for Bankman-Fried did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Bankman-Fried has been free on $250 million bond following his extradition last month from the Bahamas, where he lived and where the exchange was based.

Since his release, Bankman-Fried has been subject to electronic monitoring and required to live with his parents, both professors at Stanford Law School in California.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate has been charged with two counts of wire fraud and six conspiracy counts, including to launder money and commit campaign finance violations. He could face up to 115 years in prison if convicted.

Bankman-Fried has admitted to making mistakes running FTX but said he did not believe he was criminally liable.

France Latest Nation To Impose Covid Tests On Travellers From China

France on Friday joined a growing list of nations imposing Covid tests on travellers from China, after Beijing dropped foreign travel curbs despite surging cases -- and amid questions about its data reporting.

Spain, South Korea and Israel also said they would require proof of a negative test for travelers leaving China, and UK media reported that Britain would soon join them.

Despite its hospitals and morgues being overwhelmed -- and international concern over the low official figures on infections and deaths there -- China insisted Friday that it had been transparent in sharing its Covid-19 data.

On Wednesday, a senior US health official said Beijing had provided only limited data to global databases about variants circulating in China, and its testing and reporting on new cases had diminished.

On Thursday, World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged China to be more forthcoming, saying it was "understandable" that some countries had introduced restrictions in response to its Covid-19 surge.

But on Friday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin insisted: "Since the outbreak of the epidemic, China has been sharing relevant information and data with the international community, including WHO, in an open and transparent manner.

"We shared the sequence of the new coronavirus at the first instance, thus making important contributions to the development of relevant vaccines (and) drugs in other countries."

A national disease control body in China said there were about 5,500 new local cases and one death Friday but, with the end of mass testing and the narrowing of criteria for what counts as a Covid fatality, those numbers are no longer believed to reflect reality.

France, Spain, South Korea and Israel have joined Italy, Japan, India, Malaysia, Taiwan and the United States in requiring negative Covid tests for all travellers from mainland China, in a bid to avoid importing new virus variants.

Switzerland however said it would keep its borders open for arrivals from China.

- Different European approaches -

In Beijing, Wang argued that health experts in several countries had decided there was no need to impose entry restrictions on travelers from China.

The European Union's infectious disease agency (ECDC) said Thursday such restrictions were not warranted for the moment, due to the high levels of immunity in the EU and European Economic Area.

Germany seemed to take that on board Friday, saying it did not currently see the need to impose routine tests on arrivals from China.

But Health Minister Karl Lauterbach did argue for a coordinated EU-wide system to monitor variants across European airports.

"We need a European solution," he said.

A coordinated approach would make it easier to detect new variants of the coronavirus quickly and take appropriate measures, he added.

And while routine tests were "not yet necessary" for arrivals from China, that could change given that data from China could not be reliably obtained.

Justifying the restrictions Spain had decided to impose, Health Minister Carolina Darias said: "A major concern lies in the possibility of new variants appearing in China that have not been controlled.

"Given the health situation in that country, we know the importance of acting with coordination, but also the importance of acting quickly," she added.

- Rival estimates -

Jiao Yahui, from China's National Health Commission (NHC), insisted on Thursday Beijing had always published data "on Covid-19 deaths and severe cases in the spirit of openness and transparency".

The NHC said last week it would no longer release an official daily Covid death toll.

But health risk analysis firm Airfinity said it currently estimates 9,000 daily deaths and 1.8 million infections per day in China, and it expects 1.7 million fatalities across the country by the end of April 2023.

The Britain-based research firm said its model was based on data from China's regional provinces before changes to reporting infections were implemented, combined with case growth rates from other former zero-Covid countries when they lifted restrictions.

China said this month it would end mandatory quarantine for people arriving in the country and that it had abandoned strict measures to contain the virus.

The world's most populous country will downgrade its management of Covid-19 from January 8, treating it as a Class B infection rather than a more serious Class A.

States Directed To Form Units In Police Stations For Motor Accident Claims

The Supreme Court has directed the states to constitute a special unit in police stations within three months to investigate and facilitate motor accident claim cases.

Issuing a slew of directions, the top court said on receiving intimation about a road accident by a motor vehicle at a public place, the SHO concerned shall take steps as per Section 159 of the Motor Vehicle Amendment Act under which an Accident Information Report is to be filed to the Claims Tribunal within three months by the police.

"In our view, the head of the Home Department of the State and the Director General of Police in all States/Union Territories shall ensure the compliance of the Rules by constituting a special unit in the police stations or at least at town level to investigate and facilitate the motor accident claim cases. The said action must be ensured within a period of three months," a bench of Justices S A Nazeer and J K Maheshwari said.

The top court said after registering the FIR, the Investigating Officer (IO) shall act as specified in the Motor Vehicles Amendment Rules, 2022, and submit the First Accident Report within 48 hours to the Claims Tribunal.

"The registering officer is duty bound to verify the registration of the vehicle, driving licence, the fitness of vehicle, permits, and other ancillary issues and submit the report in coordination to the police officer before the Claims Tribunal.

"The flow chart and all other documents, as specified in the rules, shall either be in the vernacular language or in the English language, as the case may be, and shall be supplied as per Rules," the bench said in a recent order.

Observing that the role of the IO is very important, it said the officer shall inform the victim or the legal representative, driver, owner, insurance companies, and other stakeholders with respect to the action taken while following the Motor Vehicles Amendment Rules.

"In case the claimant or legal representative of the victim has filed a separate claim petition in the territorial jurisdiction of different High Courts, the first claim petition filed by the claimant/legal representative(s) shall be maintained and the subsequent claim petition shall stand transferred to the Claims Tribunal where the first claim petition was filed and (is) pending.

"It is made clear here that the claimant are not required to apply before this Court seeking transfer of other claim petition though filed in the territorial jurisdiction of different High Courts," the bench said.

The Supreme Court also directed the state authorities to take appropriate steps to develop a joint web portal/platform to coordinate with and facilitate the stakeholders for carrying out the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Amendment Act and the Rules in coordination with any technical agency and be notified to the public. The top court's order came on a plea challenging an order passed by the Allahabad High Court which dismissed the appeal filed against the award passed by the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT).

The MACT had allowed the claim petition and awarded a compensation of Rs 31,90,000 in favour of legal representatives of a 24-year-old man who died in a road accident. The victim's car was hit by a bus on the bypass road near Sanhwali village in Uttar Pradesh when he was returning home from the factory. The victim sustained severe injuries and died on the way to the hospital.

WHO Says Concern Over China Covid Surge "Understandable"

Restrictions some countries have introduced in response to China's Covid-19 surge are "understandable", given the lack of information from Beijing, the head of the World Health Organization said Thursday.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged China to be more forthcoming on the pandemic situation in the country.

His comments came after the United States joined several nations in imposing Covid tests on travellers from China after Beijing dropped foreign travel curbs despite a surge in cases.

The EU's health agency said however that such measures weren't warranted for the moment in the bloc.

"In order to make a comprehensive risk assessment of the Covid-19 situation on the ground in China, WHO needs more detailed information," Tedros said on Twitter.

"In the absence of comprehensive information from China, it is understandable that countries around the world are acting in ways that they believe may protect their populations.

"We remain concerned about the evolving situation and we continue encouraging China to track the Covid-19 virus and vaccinate the highest risk people.

"We continue to offer our support for clinical care and protecting its health system."

Hospitals across China have been overwhelmed by an explosion of infections following Beijing's decision to lift strict rules that had largely kept the virus at bay but tanked the economy and sparked widespread protests.

China said this week it would end mandatory quarantine on arrival, prompting many Chinese to make plans to travel abroad.

On December 21, Tedros told journalists the WHO was concerned about increasing reports of severe disease in China.

He called for detailed data on disease severity, hospital admissions and intensive care requirements.

China's National Health Commission said last week it would no longer release an official daily Covid death toll.

Congress Leader Invites Smriti Irani To Join Bharat Jodo Yatra

Congress leader and former Uttar Pradesh MLC Deepak Singh on Thursday said he has written to BJP MP from Amethi Smriti Irani, inviting her to join the Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Yatra in the state.

Mr Singh said he handed over the invitation to Irani's secretary Naresh Sharma at her camp office in Gauriganj on Wednesday.

The former Member of Legislative Council (MLC) said he was directed by the senior leaders of his party to invite everyone to join the Bharat Jodo Yatra. "I thought that Amethi MP Smriti Zubin Irani should be given an invitation letter before anybody else," he said.

Asked about the invite, district president of the BJP Durgesh Tripathi said there was no question of the Amethi MP or any other worker of the party joining the yatra.

"The BJP always works on the concept of a united India. India has never been broken, so where did this talk of uniting it come from," he asked.

Irani defeated former Congress president Rahul Gandhi from Amethi in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

The yatra will enter Uttar Pradesh via Ghaziabad on January 3.

Uzbekistan Blames India-Made Syrup For Deaths, Centre Responds: 10 Facts

  1. The health ministry of Uzbekistan, in a statement, said that the children who died had consumed cough syrup Doc-1 Max - manufactured by Noida-based Marion Biotech. Laboratory tests found "the presence of ethylene glycol", a toxic substance. Doc-1 Max syrups have been withdrawn from all pharmacies,  Uzbekistan said.
  2. The Uzbek authorities have started legal action against some people, "including the local representative of the company there… we are extending necessary consular assistance to those individuals," said foreign ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi. Uzbekistan, he said, has not formally contacted the Indian government about the deaths.
  3. The syrup was apparently given to children at home without a doctor's prescription, on the advice of pharmacists, with doses that exceeded the standard dose for children. It was found that the children, before being hospitalised, took this syrup at home for 2-7 days, in doses of 2.5 to 5 ml three to four times a day, the ministry said. The deaths apparently took place over a period of two months.
  4. A joint inquiry is being conducted by the teams of Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO - north zone) and Uttar Pradesh Drugs Controlling and Licensing Authority. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said further action would be taken on basis of the inspection.
  5. Sources also said manufacturing company Marion Biotech has been asked to submit an undertaking that the cough syrup was not supplied in any part of India. Samples of other drugs it manufactures will be picked up for random testing.
  6. Marion Biotech said samples of the cough syrup have been collected from its manufacturing unit and that they are now waiting for the test report. "Our drugs are not at fault, we are waiting for the testing to be completed," said Hasan Harris, Legal Representative of Marion Biotech.
  7. Earlier this year, deaths of 70 children in Gambia were linked to cough syrups manufactured by Haryana-based Maiden Pharmaceuticals, following which, its unit was shut by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation for violation of manufacturing standards.
  8. After the World Health Organisation (WHO) had issued a statement over the deaths in Gambia, Drugs Controller General, VG Somani, earlier this month had said that tests on samples of Maiden's products at government laboratories had "been found to be complying with specifications" and no toxic substance was detected in them.
  9. "The onus in such a case lies with the importing country and the manufacturing company. When drugs are produced for exports, the standards of the country it is being exported to are followed," Rajesh Agarwal, the former director of National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority told NDTV.
  10. The issue has spiralled into a political controversy. "Modi Sarkar must stop boasting about India being a pharmacy to the world & take strictest action," Congress's Jairam Ramesh tweeted. "The death of children in Gambia had nothing to do with the consumption of cough syrup made in India. That has been clarified by the Gambian authorities and DCGI, both," shot back the BJP's Amit Malviya.

"India's Roads Will Be Better Than Those In US": Nitin Gadkari

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday said roads in India would be better than those in the United States of America by the end of 2024 under the Narendra Modi government.

He was speaking after inaugurating the first phase of a bridge on Zuari river, which is expected to improve connectivity between the North and South districts of Goa.

Asserting that road infrastructure was being created at a rapid pace in the country now, he said, "We have decided that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, before the end of the year 2024, India's road infrastructure will be better than that of America."

The commissioning of the Manohar International Airport in Mopa earlier this month will pave the way for Goa to become the number one state in the country, he added.

Mr Gadkari also said his plans to start a water taxi system in Goa failed due to non-cooperation of the state's Captain of Ports office.

"The strength of Goa is in its ports and the plan was to connect ports with the airport by water taxi. Such a project would have saved Goa from pollution. The state, like water and air pollution, must also take care to curb sound pollution," he said.

Elaborating on his plans to reduce sound pollution, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways said he was contemplating the possibility of replacing the "blaring" sound of vehicle horns with soothing music.

Speaking about the new Zuari bridge, Mr Gadkari said it would have a revolving restaurant and viewers gallery on a tower.

"The state government had issued tenders for the project twice but could not get any response from bidders. I will help the state government on how to go ahead with this project," Mr Gadkari said.

Among those who were present for the bridge inauguration were Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Union Minister Shripad Naik.

Mr Gadkari also inaugurated the approach roads to the bridge from Bambolim to Verna villages.

As per the state government, this will be India's widest cable-stayed bridge when completed.

The bridge is part of a Rs 2,530 crore project covering a distance of 13.2 kilometres between Bambolim and Verna villages.

Constructor Dilip Buildcon Limited has said the entire the entire eight-lane project will be completed by April, 2023.

Russia To Achieve Ukraine Goals Thanks To "Patience": Foreign Minister

Russia's foreign minister said Wednesday he was convinced that Moscow would achieve its goals in Ukraine thanks to its "patience" and "perseverance".

"I am convinced that thanks to our perseverance, patience and determination, we will defend the noble goals that are vital for our people and our country," Russia's top diplomat Sergei Lavrov said in an interview broadcast on national television Wednesday.

He reiterated Moscow's stance that for talks to resume Kyiv should recognise the annexation by Russia of four Ukrainian regions.

"Our absolute priority is four new Russian regions," Lavrov said. "They should become free from the threat of Nazification that they have faced for many years."

Russia does not currently control the regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia in full, and Lavrov confirmed that was Moscow's ultimate goal.

Lavrov said that while Moscow wanted the conflict to be over, Russia would take its time to achieve its goals on the battlefield.

"We are in no hurry," he said.

"We would like to end this war as soon as possible, which the West was preparing and, as a result, unleashed against us through Ukraine," he added.

"We are a patient people. We will protect our compatriots, citizens and lands that have been Russian for centuries."

Rajasthan Minister Blames BJP For Teacher Recruitment Exam Paper Leak

Rajasthan Minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas on Wednesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of colluding with paper leak mafias and said that it was the state government's efforts behind the arrests made in connection to the Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) paper leak case.

"BJP is in cahoots with the paper-leak mafias. It was the Rajasthan government who arrested those who leaked the RPSC teachers' recruitment exam paper," the minister said while speaking to the media on the occasion of the 138th Foundation day of Congress.

Rajasthan Police have arrested 55 people including a government school headmaster in connection to the paper leak of the Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) teachers' recruitment examination.

The arrested women were sent to police remand for two days while the men were sent for five days after they were produced before the magistrate on Sunday.

According to the police, the 'mastermind' of the case has been identified as Suresh Vishnoi, a government school headmaster posted at a government school in Jalore district.

The Gehlot government was cornered by the opposition parties on the paper leak issue for the last few days as the Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC) cancelled the 2nd-grade teacher competitive examination 2022 for General Knowledge after the leak of paper and rescheduled it for January 29.

BJP MP Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore also took a swipe at the state government saying, the state is not fulfilling its responsibilities.

"In the last four years, 16 times exam papers have been leaked. Our demand for a CBI inquiry was ignored. Permission is not being given to CBI as the government knows that big names will be revealed. It's unfortunate that the Rajasthan government is not fulfilling its responsibilities," he said on Monday.

Union Jal Shakti Minister and Jodhpur BJP MP Gajendra Singh Shekhawat had on Sunday demanded a Central Bureau Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the scam.

Tunisha Sharma Death: Actor's Mother, Uncle, Driver To Record Statements

The Waliv Police of Maharashtra on Wednesday summoned Tunisha Sharma's mother Vanita Sharma, her uncle Pawan Sharma and her driver to record their statements in connection with the alleged suicide of the popular television actor.

Waliv Police said the accused, Tunisha's boyfriend and co-star Sheezan Khan, was not cooperating with the investigators.

The police said it was a serious and a high-profile case which requires a thorough investigation. But, Sheezan was neither giving proper answers to questions during interrogation nor cooperating in the ongoing probe, the investigators alleged.

The police said they have seized three mobile phones, including two iPhones, over the course of its ongoing probe in the case.

The police further informed that they had retrieved Sheezan's chats with Tunisha, her mother and his mother from his phone that they had seized earlier.

Police said they also found Sheezan's chats with a 'secret girlfriend'. They claimed Sheezan talked with his 'secret girlfriend' for two hours on the day of Tunisha's death.

Tunisha's mother has earlier accused Sheezan of having relationships with several girls. The police had said it would grill him on the claim of Tunisha's mother, sources said.

During its probe, the police also took Sheezan to the sets of 'Ali Baba: Dastaan-E-Kabul' where Tunisha was found dead under mysterious circumstances.

Watch: Railways Ministry Shares A Glimpse Of Revamped Train Coaches Adorned With Art

The Ministry of Railways on Tuesday shared a video showing a new set of revamped train coaches. The 'coach facelift' initiative has been undertaken by the Sealdah Division of the Eastern Railway in order to revamp the otherwise-dull train coaches and make them more vibrant. The video shows a coach of a local train operating in West Bengal, facelifted with colourful art and bright LED lights. The walls of the coach can be seen adorned with murals and paintings, portraying India's diverse culture.

Sharing the video, Indian Railways wrote, ''Uplifting your Travel Experience! A coach facelift initiative has been undertaken by the Sealdah Division of @EasternRailway, where coaches are being adorned with art. Catch a glimpse of a train that runs on the Sealdah-Bangaon section.''

Watch the video here:

Many users flocked to the comment section to appreciate the unique initiative and praised Indian Railways. One user wrote, ''Great initiative to showcase and save the rich Indian and especially regional culture in the form of art.I think trains on all local routes could be decorated like this and in other similar designs !!!'' Another said, ''Great initiative by team.''

However, not everyone was impressed with the art. Many found it unappealing and said that the Railways should focus more on improving its service and pay heed to problems faced by commuters.

A third user reacted to the video and wrote, ''Gaudy Awful Claustrophobic... Graffiti Artists do better JobsDo some Good Maintenance n Improve Services n Coach Quality instead.''

A fourth commented, ''Please!! Employ good and professional artists for this. Else leave it as is. This is not a facelift. Its a spoiler!!'' A fifth added, ''Painting uplifts the travel experience? A waste of money in my books.''
